    Any bargains?

  • How much is shipping though?

    • +1

Free over $20… but in the past the free shipping has been a bit flakey so it's well worth spending the couple of dollars on "Australia Expedited Air" shipping, it's relatively cheap IMO…

      • Thanks

        Free over $20

Actually, free over 20USD, currently equivalent to about 31AUD.

Although Fasttech will show you estimated prices in several currencies including AUD, they will charge your credit card or PayPal in USD.

If you have a good credit card (like 28 Degrees or Bankwest Zero Platinum), set PayPal to charge your credit card in the seller's currency. Otherwise PayPal will charge you about 4% extra to do the conversion to AUD.

Other credit cards will probably hit you with a conversion fee and an "overseas transaction fee".

  • Literally couldn't find any items that would actually ship to Australia.

    Wanted torches - no.

    Battery bank - no.

    Pocket knives - no.

    Head torch - no.

Ok well that's the only things I've ever bought from fasttech so that's a dead site for me.

    • I just tried to buy headlamps and was successful. I got all the way to the PayPal screen before I cancelled.

You appear to have fallen foul of two Fasttech policies.

It appear they won't ship pocket knives, because too many of them got taken by Australian Customs, and they had to refund. You can still order multitools though, even ones with a blade.

They absolutely won't ship any batteries containing lithium to Australia. Although I was able to put a headlamp containing a non-removable li-ion battery into my order, not sure if that would have actually shipped.

The good news is that there are now some options for buying non-lithium batteries, previously there were none. I have bought NiMh batteries from them a long time ago, before the restrictions came in, but I can't see any NiMh batteries worth buying today.

  • Ouch, be mindful how bad the Paypal exchange rate is at the moment:
    PayPal's conversion rate: 1 AUD = 0.613144 USD

    • I recommend you get a good credit card to avoid that.

Paypal always charges about 4% worse than the mastercard/visa exchange rate. So you can avoid the 4% markup if you set Paypal to bill your credit/debit card in the purchasing currency.

BUT, most cards will then hit you with a "currency exchange fee" and probably an "overseas purchase fee". Cards from some banks, despite being mastercard or visa cards, will also give you a horrible exchange rate.

The consensus here on OzBargain is that 28 Degrees Mastercard and Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard are the best options. They have no annual fee, don't hike the exchange rate, and they don't charge the fees mentioned above. There are a few other cards with the same benefits, compare them all here:
