Free Global Wi-Fi for 28 Degrees Platinum Mastercard Holders @ Boingo (1 Million+ Hotspots Worldwide)

1040

Last reposted nearly three years ago, another nice benefit for 28° card holders alongside the Flight Delay Pass.

Boingo Wi-Fi for Mastercard® Cardholders provides you with access to more than 1 million premium Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide.

Get connected on the go at airports, hotels, coffee shops and more.

Wi-Fi FAQ page on the 28° site. Search for hotspots here. It looks like regular Boingo subscription costs $14.99USD/mo.

Note the registration site gives a blank splash page for five seconds before showing the eligibility form. As noted by several commenters on the Flight Delay Pass post, if you have trouble signing up with your card number you may have better luck registering with your account number (shown on your statement) instead, as I did.

I just got back from a two week trip in Japan and didn't have much luck getting the Boingo app to work, but YMMV. I did manage to get free inflight Wi-Fi with Singapore Airlines on my Japan to SG flight leg where I had an option to sign into my Boingo account on the inflight Wi-Fi portal. Unfortunately the SG to AU leg was running a different inflight system so there was no Boingo option.

You must walk home naked dragging the stone of shame….

    • +5

You get to hold back the electric car, or rig every Oscar night.

    • Only thing you might get is better exchange rates and no annual service fee :)

    Review said this is useless

    • +7

Yeah that was pretty much my experience while on land. But I did manage to score free inflight Wi-Fi and it's free to sign up, so why not?

I used it also for free inflight wifi in the US. Seven weeks in the US and could not use anywhere else though.

        • Is there a list of airlines it works with?

          • -1

@recession1: Well it looks like their partnership with American Airlines ended during COVID, so now I see no benefit to using Boingo.

    • +1

i got the boingo inflight wifi working once and it was okay. couldn't really use it for meetings but I could stay on emails and chats. was a life saver on that trip.
doesn't say so anywhere but it only works on one device at a time.
it's free, so a really good benefit even if a bit flaky.

During our UK trip in 2019 the hotels we stayed at offered free Internet, but for one device only at 2Mbps. They were using the Boingo platform which allowed me to use the free 28 Degrees Boingo access to access the premium Internet package at these hotels. Haven't used it apart from those four or five hotels though.

    • Yes, never had any luck and stuff all actual locations when was looking at using it.

  • +9

never actually been to a place anywhere that this worked… just my experience

  • I used Boingo on flight before COVID. If I remember correctly it was Etihad.

  • +2

I used this in Hong Kong and it was fine. Saying that, there was so much free wifi around that I don't know if you would need something like this - as long as you are running a VPN.

    • Bit off topic but were you there recently? If so, you enjoy travelling there? Any difference pre and post covid?

      • yes they had to think about not breaching the national security law lol

      • +2

we were there pre covid, right at the start of the anti government riots.
It's a fantastic place to visit, do NOT go in summer/wet season or you will spend all your money on drinks and antiperspirant and personal fans.

We also did a day trip over the mainland China (into Shenzhen). The people there are even more friendly and helpful, yes I know they want our money but since I'm there to spend it doesn't faze me. Really with I'd overnight'ed in Shenzhen, two days would have been better.

Macau is a short ferry trip away, great day trip - pay for first class on the fast ferry, so worth it and not too expensive. Don't buy tickets of anyone that is not working an official booth, touts are everywhere trying to sell you tickets and they sometimes aren't all they are promised.

Hong Kong Disney is great for kids and Disney fans, but if you don't do rides then you might find it a bit boring.

Oh, you don't need any special visa to get into Hong Kong or Macau, that gets taken care of when you enter Hong Kong. If you want to do mainland China you need to have a visa. Plan ahead and get one before you leave, or if you catch the train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen there is an immigration office that will process your visa in a few hours.

  • I used this in-flight long haul on Singapore Air and Swiss Air last month to Europe. Probably saved me over $60 which was nice.

Not available on Finnair or Qantas. I think it did work on Lufthansa but I could be wrong.

  • Don't depend on this if you are going to Bali, even at the airport I could only get connected once, and at a very specific spot.

  • I had Boingo years ago. Never get me connected to any wifi for free,or it’s free anyway.

  • I've used this on Lufthansa for free in-flight wifi.

I never thought I could make use of it until I jumped on a JAL flight and saw boingo as a login option. Free wifi for the entire trip instead of charge by the hour.

  • +3

I've found this to be useful up in the air but not on the ground.

Boingo will only work on planes that are equipped with Panasonic Avionics gear, so naturally they're the only ones I fly on internationally now.

Absolute lifesaver during a 19 hour flight.

Enjoy it by browsing OzBargain and scoring a deal while every other sucker is watching the crappy on-board entertainment system.

    • the only ones I fly on

Do they have a list or something about which airlines it's available on? Also how do you connect once you're onboard, just turn on wifi and then login?

      • Do they have a list or something about which airlines it's available on?

It is not only based on the airline but also certain aircraft types.

Here is a quick table, found half-way down the page, for Boingo access on Singapore Airlines (and Scoot) metal: https://milelion.com/airlines/singapore-airlines-wi-fi-guide…

Local carriers Qantas and Virgin do not have Wi-Fi on international flights at all (LOL).

Also how do you connect once you're onboard, just turn on wifi and then login?

Yes, generally how you access it is to click on the Boingo link found on the airline intranet menu under the Wi-Fi section and login using your account credentials.

        • Flying to Europe next week (via SG). REALLY hope at least one of the legs I'm on has the Panasonic system..

          • @rith: Check the link - if it's an Airbus A350 or Boeing 787 you're good to go.

            • @Reveen: B777-300ER on both outbound legs so it's luck of the draw for me! A350 on the way back, at least.

              • @rith: I was about to edit my comment above to include Boeing 777-300ER as it has some variants listed but you beat me to it. Good luck.

  • any experience on Jetstar flight?

    • +1

      hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha that's a joke right?

expecting crazy clarks of the airline industry to be partnered with anyone else

    • Works on Scoot

I just got back from a two week trip in Japan and didn't have much luck getting the Boingo app to work,

Same experience in Japan in 2018. Got it working a few times but the signal was typically weak as hell and speed pitiful, flat out trying to just load gmail.
Spent WAY too much time trying to get it to work.

  • The only one of these that was ever remotely decent was Telstra Air as they would piggy back off their customer routers.

  • I managed to activate this like 5 years ago, has already been a couple of years since I cancelled my 28degrees card at the time, but the old number worked well.

The account is still working and I have managed to get the occasional free wifi when travelling. Most hotspots in this also work with Telstra Global Wifi service.

im not very good with credit cards - can someone recommend a good card with price protection built in that folk here claim on a lot? does CBA have one?

  • -2

28degrees is old news, especially after they closed the free o/s atm thing.

    • still good for using your debit card for cash withdrawals and having 28 degrees for dumping everything on the credit card

  • Long live testra air…

  • Thanks OP. Totally forgot about this and flying out next week!!

  • When you have Boingo then you don't need to share your phone number and accept various permission or download some authentication to access free wifi. That is the advantage of Boingo as they have already verified you and it will prevent some dirty actors from accessing your phone by dropping some macros.

Just a heads up to new users, I found Boingo drained my battery very quickly so if you're using it while travelling, it's good to have a power bank or charger handy

  • Worked well on my Scoot flight (TR7) to Singapore last month.

It was completely unavailable on the flight home however, not sure if it was a technical issue or turned off since it was an overnight flight.

  • Haven't tried in inflight but pre covid I tried using on land in SE Asia and China and it barely worked 😕

  • Any idea about LATAM BOEING 787-9 JET, Jestar AIRBUS INDUSTRIE A320 JET, Virgin BOEING 737 800 JET?

  • My 28 cc is not eligible for Boingo, both cc number and acc number, any idea?

  • I notice today my 28degrees boingo account no longer works… seems they have disabled the account…. Oh well while it last … RIP

    • What a sad day.

    • hmm, I just created an account today using my 28 degrees global platinum and it seems to have worked,
my account shows plan: Mastercaard Global Unlimited
no hotspots nearby so unable to test connection…
