Flight Delay Pass with 28 Degrees Mastercard - Free Food and Lounge for Flight Delays over 2 Hours (Pre-Registration Required)

3240

Been over 2 years since the last post of this.

With more and more people traveling I hope it helps those unaware and/or forgotten about the feature, just in case you get caught up in delays.

From the last post it seems like there was an issue with registering if you still have the blue card.

Steps:

  1. Register your flight - Just register your card and flight details for you and up to four additional guests online, at least six hours before your scheduled departure.

  2. Receive your pass - We'll track your flight, and if it's delayed by 2 hours or more, we'll email and SMS your pass(es) to you automatically - too easy! The minimum two-hour delay can be announced in one go, or cumulative from a series of shorter delays

  3. Sit back and relax - Show your one-time-use code to participating airport partners and treat yourself, on us.

For information on which Lounges you can visit and further details about those lounges, visit LoungeKey™ Finder website

  • Is a cancellation considered to be a delay?

    • +11

Flights that are cancelled or rescheduled to the next day (24 hours after the flight's scheduled departure time) will not be deemed as delayed and will be handled by the airline directly via their own compensation process.

  • +3

Airline tickets need to be purchased on the 28 degrees card to qualify?

    • +16

      Nope, this is the criteria

You will be eligible for the lounge pass when the following conditions have been met:

      • You have registered the flight at least six hours prior to your scheduled departure
      • You must register each of your travel companions (maximum four per cardholders) individually for a lounge pass
      • A delay of two hours or more is announced for your flight. The minimum two-hour delay can be announced in one go, or cumulative from a series of shorter delays
      • Access to a lounge or lounge alternative, which is part of the LoungeKey™ network is available at your airport terminal when the delay occurs.

  • Looks legit, just registered

  • Worked for me. Thanks OP

    Check out Sydney Airport.
The lounge finder mostly finds cafes - not lounges.
Seems to be limit on how much you can spend.
Still - as they say - "better than nothing" i.e what Jetstar will offer if you're delayed.

    • +6

      if you're delayed.

      Lol @ 'if'

      • +2

If you are flying Jetstar you will need this so you can hang out at a coffe or pizza bar at Sydney Airport.

    • Do we know what the monetary value of it is for a cafe?

      • I can't see it anywhere.
        $15 coffee?

        • From memory Quiskhots charged $7 for a single slice of banana bread like you'd get in a supermarket.

I loathe these airport cafes that get away with not displaying prices.

      • +2

$36 and you can search the LoungeKey partners at https://airport.mastercard.com/en/

        1. Cardholders can use their lounge visit entitlement to receive AUD$36 off the bill. Each AUD$36 deduction represents a single lounge visit within the Cardholder’s existing lounge visit allocation for which the Cardholder will, where applicable, be charged. E.g. if a Cardholder registers 1 Guest they will receive AUD$72 off their bill which will be charged as 1 Cardholder visit + 1 Guest visit on their account. Only 1 card per visit per Cardholder will be accepted and at point of registration.

        2. The AUD$36 is valid for the purchase of any meal and/or drinks. To be eligible, Cardholders must present a valid Card and Boarding Pass with confirmed same-day travel before placing an order.

        3. AUD$36 is non-transferable & cannot be exchanged for cash substitute or refund if the final bill is lower than AUD$36 per person.

        4. Cardholder is responsible for the balance if total final bill exceeds AUD$36 per person. Any remaining balance cannot be used towards gratuity.

        • Oddly specific, thanks!

          • @RedSky: See the comments under Priority Pass now offers $36 of food, drink at Sydney Airport. Fortunately the amount has not decreased despite weakening of the exchange rate.

(Note LoungeKey and Priority Pass are both part of Collinson Group.)

            • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Unrelated to the deal, but that article is no longer completely true if the priority pass membership is offered via AMEX. They recently took away "Non-Lounge Experiences" from members which include $36 off for food.

  • How would you even fit a lounge on the plane?

    • +1

Lounges are easy, my Gulfstream even has a bed

      • +3

Good to see some peeps from r/AusFinance here

I should note is that, the lounge must have a "Pay for Entry" criteria to enter, hence the benefit. As they are partnered with LoungeKey which basically offers access to Pay to Use Lounges at a fee.

For example, if you are flying Qantas out of Terminal 1 out of Melbourne, the only 2 lounges are Qantas operated and they don't allow for passengers to pay to enter leaving you without a lounge.

With Vigin Australia out of Terminal 3, they do allow passengers to pay to enter however they are not partnered with LoungeKey, so you wont be able to use any lounge at Terminal 3 if your flight is delayed by 2 hours or more.

You could always change Terminals however it just adds more risk if needing to head back to the original Terminal and with the potential of long security lines, or if the flight is suddenly ready for boarding while you are sipping Champagne at a lounge across the other side of the airport.

    Happy travels.

    • For example, if you are flying Qantas out of Terminal 1 out of Melbourne, the only 2 lounges are Qantas operated and they don't allow for passengers to pay to enter leaving you without a lounge.<

Thanks for calling this out. So not really free then if you are still paying to access the lounge?

Anybody else successfully claim this in the past and does the pass actually get to you before departure? I'm trying to think of the benefit should you have to pay to use the lounge and then for you to only have access to it after your re-scheduled departure time. I'm haven't travelled enough to consider them so happy to be corrected.

      • +2

Not quite. There are lounges that you will get for free if your right is delayed.

However at Melbourne, the only easily accessible lounge is the Rex Lounge at Terminal 4.
The other lounges are located at Terminal 2, which needs a ticket and a passport. If you do get stuck in Terminal 2, I highly recommend the House. Fantastic lounge.

If you do get stuck in Terminal 1 or 3. You will need to change Terminals to use the lounge, otherwise you are stuck with no lounge.

This service is available since last 4-5 yrs , I have registered couple of times for my travel , I got the pass only once. Other time I tried calling couple of people about the delay but they never came back . So it's a hit and miss but better to register your flight anyway just takes few minutes

  • +4

A must card for Jetstar flights

    • +6

Nah Jetstar specialises in cancelling flights

      • stay in the bali lounge overnight with everyone lol

      • That’s right, our flight from MEL to Gold Coast was cancelled last night. 2 mins after they announced which gate to board

    • Yep. We're going to Bali in October and although Jetstar fly PER-DPS, they were my last choice. We're going Malindo (don't know how good they are but they also have luggage included in the ticket price, it's not an extra) as their departure times both ways are good.

Jetstar were also the most expensive and their flight times are the most inconvenient.

  • If you are overseas and have no sms access or wifi what do you do? Not all airports offer free wifi.

    • who travels without getting a local sim card when you get there these days? It's so cheap

      • Not in Japan in 2018/19. For travelling as couple it was much cheaper to get a pocket wifi and share it, than a local SIM. Good thing this service also sends via email, which is by far the better way.

    • You could attempt to use one of those free temporary email websites that can open emails through a browser. (Note that it'd also need to be able to open the attached PDF.)

Have that as the registered email address, then when you're overseas you could try to persuade the lounge staff or some other person with an internet connection to open the Delay Pass email.

Otherwise if you can't receive email or SMS then you're out of luck.

    • -1

Why would you travel overseas without SMS ? Make sure international roaming is enabled on your plan before you leave.

If you need data and the only option is to pay for airport WiFi then you can simply pay for airport WiFi.

      • Didn’t lots of providers remove roaming during COVID and haven’t reinstated it?

        • Yeah - but if you're travelling, don't choose those plans.
If you've got services that need SMS codes to log in for example, you won't be able to access them without roaming…

          • @Nom: Although Boost state they don't offer roaming I was able to receive SMS whilst in New Zealand (even when not on wifi). I was also able to make phone calls to Australia whilst connected via WiFi Calling.

  • +2

While it sounds beneficial, most lounge are very full these days. Many refuse paid entries and credit card, priority pass holders, only accept business class ticket customers.

has anyone been knocked back from qantas lounge using a pass from cc?

    • +1

It needs to be a lounge that's part of LoungeKey. It probably won't be a QF lounge unless it's a smaller airport.

Entry is via an invitation email/sms which is sent to you from LoungeKey automatically when the flight is delayed. This relies on the airline providing accurate data which is not always the case. You will need to present the invitation email/sms to the nominated lounge.

  • I had a delayed flight in Singapore and got to use the lounge. Sure it was nothing 5 star, but I enjoyed it anyway.

  • Trouble is not all airlines will accurately update departure times with the DB that LoungeKey uses. I had a number of domestic flights in India which were delayed significantly, I was not issued any lounge passes despite the lengthy delays.

  • +1

i've had this ever since it was first available many years ago. i used to fly overseas atleast yearly before covid, and back/forth btw syd/mel every couple of weeks. out of all that time up until now i've never had a delayed flight that met the criteria. i've had numerous delays but they've all been less than 2h or the flight was just cancelled. so now i don't even bother with it.

  • +2

This is an awesome feature. I used this once on a trip to Bali. We were preparing to come back home and as we got into the taxi I got a text message with our flight delay passes. We didn’t even realise our flight was delayed until the passes arrived by text. We spent hours drinking free piss and eating free food at the airport. I didn’t mind the delay because of this.. it felt good going to an airport and getting something free for a change instead of being arse raped with the usual price of things.

Anyone know if 28 degrees accepts international applicants?

    • No its a credit card

  • +1

Same deal with Revolut cards at the premium level, I tried to use this in June when I was leaving Portugal & my flight was cancelled. After an hour I logged a ticket asking where my lounge passes were, then at 2hrs & 4hrs. After that I gave up.
My rescheduled flight boarded 6.5hrs after the original flight time, as we were boarding ding lounge passes came through.
I complained to LoungeKey who pushed back saying their systems shows my passes were issued on time, I sent them screenshots with time stamps & then they offered me 2 free lounge passes for my next flight. I still had to wait for 6.5hrs on a plastic chair in Portugal while hungover. I cancelled my Revolut card shortly after that. I don’t have any faith in the LoungeKey service

this card just keeps on giving! i've had it since 2008 - no kidding, and have price protected thousands of dollars on this and they still keep piling on new features - all for the price of $0. Sometimes I wonder how they keep going, must be a select few cardholders with massive credit card debt.

    • Yeah no doubt they have many with the 20%+ interest

    • yeah it's crazy how they can offer all these benefits and make any money

  • Any resolution for blue card holders?

I keep getting "Please check that you have entered an eligible Mastercard card number."

When I contacted 28 Degrees/Latitude they told me I'd have to speak with Mastercard.

    • +1

Get a replacement card. The new black one works

      • +3

my black card didn't work, so I tried using account number and that worked.

    • My blue card was recognised. At least as far as allowing me to go further.

    • +3

I had the same problem. On a whim, I entered the account number on my monthly statements and it worked.

      • +3

Yep this is what MasterCard told me to use when I was having the same issue, and it worked

      • Awesome, this worked for me. Cheers!

  • Isnt this for any Mastercard?

    • The offer linked is specific for 28 Degrees/Latitude.

    • Nope, though you can give it a try with other cards and report back.

Thats it, but its got beers in it. Nibbles to the side. Thats all you need.

    • +1

I'm more concerned for the person carrying the camera. Thats a lot of heavy breathing for a 20 meter walk around the lounge

    • My friend's Mum has those exact same chairs in her house.

  • So for our trip in November
    - discount for a cafe in Brisbane
    - access to a lounge in Sydney
    - access to a lounge in Honolulu…that reopens in Jan 2023

Still, better than nothing, so thanks for the heads up OP

  • Hi guys apologies for the question
Don't really see the point of making a forum post for a simple question like this
Is getting a 28 Degrees card worth it?
I've only got a commbank debit card, and I'm really conscious with spending money and paying back things like zip pay straight away before any fees occur
I've heard using a credit card can increase your credit score if you use it for everyday things and pay it off straight away?
    Thanks
    Morgan
    (Apologies again)

Combine this with a Qantas flight to increase your success rate!

  • I received a replacement card a couple years ago with different number but the flight delay offer unable to verify my new card number. So I had to use my old card number to verify….

Just tested as mentioned above thread using account number works to verify

  • Half the problem with travel at the moment is that it takes ages to get through immigration, or to get your baggage, so you miss your connecting flight.

I doubt this covers that scenario.

    • dont forget Sydney's connecting shuttle bus between domestic and international which only frequents every 15 minutes!

      • I had to wait 40 minutes last time

  • Has anyone here successfully used their LoungeKey Barcode in another airport/city?

The barcode Mastercard sends is valid for three months.
Ryan Air didn’t report the delay until after we departed, so I got my LoungeKey code when I already touched down at my destination.

    • Yep, my flight in Emriates Dubai to Ho Chi Minh was delayed by 4 hours, which they announced an hour before the flight, my partner and I got access to the lounge inc 2 kids, had breakfast and lunch and a couple of drinks. They even had an area for kids to play in. Made a 4 hour delay a delight instead of a nightmare, although arriving at 11:30pm at night with 2 young kids wasn't ideal, the lounge pass definitely softened the blow.

Just registered my upcoming flights over the New Year.

    • was working last night, but not working again this morning! anyone had any luck registering today?

      • No issues when I registered this afternoon.

  • Does anyone experience the card input field blanking out after submitting the card number? I'm using a Mac and it doesn't work on Chrome or Safari

    • I've found the website to be particular about browsers and have had to use Edge or Internet Explorer lol

    • I'm having the same issue using Chrome and Edge on Win 10.

Edit: Same for Safari on iOS. I haven't had issues previously.
