I take it you don't read or do any research for your intense uni work?

This looks like a solid deal to me. Would have liked Thunderbolt but at this price I won't complain

    • What’s more, it has an array of ports including USB-C for data, power, video, and audio transfers.

      Is this not Thunderbolt?

      • +3

no, unless explicitly stated it's not

thunderbolt is great for docking and enterprise sort of scenarios. most office docks will be thunderbolt

USB4 has the ability to incorporate thunderbolt but it's an optional feature

        • Isnt Thunderbolt only available on intels - pre USB4

since this is a AMD machine - it wont have it

But USB-C will still allow for power/video/sound as stated in description - just won't have the benefit of thunderbolts speed (80Gb/s?????????????)

          • -2

@soulzsium: since the latest generation AMD have had the ability to add thunderbolt to their laptops. Its not commonly taken up/used and I believe there's only 2 or so models that feature it and its on the very high end of devices

Thunderbolt is fundamentally different to USBC in that it has direct PCIexpress connections to your CPU.

This allows not only the faster transfer rate but ability to connect devices such as external GPUs or drives that will then natively use pciexpress, rather than a "conversion" in the middle

Its not a usual feature most users would look for but the ability to add an eGPU gives any laptop extended longevity, being able to upgrade the GPU as required down the line.

Thunderbolt docks and compatible displays also support daisy chaining natively

@peter05: It's old news but AMD has confirmed that the latest Ryzen 6000 mobile CPUs won't have Thunderbolt 4 support. As this is a Ryzen 5000 mobile CPU, it definitely won't have it either.

Do the Ryzen 6000 mobile CPUs support Thunderbolt 4?

AMD has confirmed that the new Ryzen 6000 series mobile CPUs support USB 4, but not Thunderbolt 4. Thunderbolt 4 availability is still limited to Intel-powered notebooks.

You're probably confusing USB4 with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 4 remains exclusive to Intel & Apple mobile CPUs.

Both USB4 and TB4 have a 40Gbps data transfer speed, DisplayPort support and PCIe lanes.

              • @brosk1s: I'm not

                USB4 incorporates Thunderbolt 3

Thunderbolt 4 is not required in USB4

The statement you have quoted does not change that AMD laptops will support Thunderbolt 3, as a subset of USB4 functionality.

Regardless it is possible for laptop manufacturers to add thunderbolt support to AMD via extra hardware. I suspect it is more related to the onerous certification process and costs + licensing rather than the hardware costs

                • -1

@peter05: Yes - USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 share the same implementation

The only difference is that USB4 doesn't need to incorporate all the features to be called USB4 - whereas thunderbolt will always have all features.

BUT coming back to the initial comment - this laptop doesn't have the latest silicon from AMD, so no Thunderbolt
but will it allow for external displays, power charging, etc - Lenovo says Yes

                  • @soulzsium: The only comment in contention was the question whether or not the listed features constituted calling it thunderbolt, which we all agree do not and therefore this laptop does not have thunderbolt

You proceeded to state that thunderbolt is only available for Intels which is untrue. Manufacturers have had the option to add thunderbolt 3 to their amd machines but chose not to. There are motherboards that have this headline feature.

I further jumped into the nuances of why thunderbolt <> usb with additional speed and then more misleading information was shared regarding absence of thunderbolt (4) but the version never entered the discussion.

There are many potential laptop customers poised for the first AMD laptop featuring thunderbolt because it will bridge one of the last annoying choices between the two platforms. You will then be able to have great battery life, performance AND thunderbolt

You'll also need to elaborate on how USB4 shares implementation of Thunderbolt 4, as USB4 is primarily implementing Thunderbolt 3 feature sets. The biggest upgrade for USB4 is the PCIe tunneling.

Thunderbolt 4 IMHO is a slight upgrade and the headline upgrades would be the extended cable length supporting maximum speeds, from 50cm to 200cm (both at 40gbps) with passive cables and Thunderbolt 3 can support a single 5K monitor or 4K, while Thunderbolt 4 can support up to a single 8K display or dual 4K monitors (not enough to "upgrade" to the new version for typical customers)

      • 5th gen Ryzen doesn't have thunderbolt.

  • +3

I know it's apples to oranges but damn this looks tempting to grab instead of spending 3x for a 14" Macbook Pro. Both have 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD

    • -7

To me it’s more, is macOS worth 3x more then the Windows OS, and to me that’s a yes.

      • How dare you say such a decadent thing on OzB!

        • +1

Yep, that’s a lot of downvotes there for having a personal opinion on what is generally viewed as a far superior operating system, but I do wonder if any of those people that have downvoted have actually used macOS - I’m gonna say no.

    • +1

The reviews of this area terrible. Plastic body, bad screen, loud, hot and mediocre battery life.

    • I actually did this with an earlier e15…. I wish I hadn’t. Screen on the 15 is lack lustre, the keyboard is nothing special, it’s gigantic. The kicker was the wifi card kept disconnecting randomly and it was a known issue with that model.

I ended up cracking it one day and buying the MBP. Yeah it’s 3x the price but I can almost guarantee it will last 3x as long because I was damn well close to throwing the e15 out the window when it would disconnect from wifi while I was trying to work.

But you’re right, this is a budget laptop, MBP is not. But I personally wish I went straight to the MBP.

The screen improvements alone make it worth it to me for photo editing etc.

But then there is apples annoying as hell soldering everything to the motherboard so you can’t upgrade. Lenovo definitely wins there.

  • this only has 1 year warranty?

    • Yes, but you can upgrade at Lenovo once you receive it.

What are the benefits from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/733925 this one vs this one ?
Any big benefits between them ? Which would be better for light gaming + everyday tasks ?

    • +2

Better processor and integrated graphics, double SSD

      https://versus.com/en/amd-ryzen-5-5625u-vs-intel-core-i5-113…

    • +1

This one has the Vega iGPU so much better for light gaming
The ThinkBook is the better work machine with the better build, screen, battery and much lighter

    • This 15 inch is better because it has full size keyboard with number pad

    • This is the better unit in terms of computing power and specs, but you might prefer the thinkbook form factor or an Intel CPU if you use thunderbolt.

  • 1 x USB 2.0
    1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Always On)
    1 x USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (support data transfer, Power Delivery 3.0, and DisplayPort™ 1.2)
    1 x HDMI 1.4b

I don't really like these ports in 2022, but it's probably no big deal for most people. A 50% off deal for T16 would be nice.

Thanks OP, grabbed an E14 for my mum as an early Christmas present!
Was going to purchase the E15, but she wanted a smaller laptop for portability

  • Battery life on e15?

    • +1

      4-5 hours in reality

  • +1

This deal seems to include Lenovo Premier Care which is their on-site warranty, but only for 12 months.

ThinkPad E15 BOOM !!! bought it :) thanks OP !

Thanks, grabbed L14 for an extra ram slot

  • +1

Got this a few months ago. Keyboard nowhere near as good as T series.
Only one usb c port that gets taken up by charging.
No card reader for something this thick.

  • I am always wondering if there is any laptop with 4 RAM slots, so I can install 128GB ram myself for my special use case. Any ideas?

    • dell precisions and lenovo p series (non s) laptops have 4 ram slots

  • Is this a rare deal? Lenovo Thinkpad L14 - AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 5875U 16G 512GB SSD W11DG is also at over 50% off $1,271.20

I need to get a laptop but don't need it right now and still contemplating whether I should get a Mac OS or Windows.

    • you can always install Hackintosh or Linux on this

      • You cannot install hackintosh on this - AMD iGPU = No go.

      • My plan originally was to get a Mac and install Windows through Parallel. But unfortunately that will install ARM based Windows only.

I just want to know if a deal like this is easy to come by.

  • The 15" is sold out. 127 sold. When I bought mine last night it was 45 sold.

  • Heads up for anyone who bought the L14 Ryzen 7 PRO model!!!

I received an email from ebay stating that they changed the price of my order, effectively removing the SAVLVO coupon, adding an extra $317 to my order.

Check your emails to see if this effects you too

edit: My guess is this is to do with the fact the coupon T&Cs say it cannot discount more than $1,000 from the 'pre-coupon price'. The sale already takes it beyond that, so they might be trying to bundle the sale price in with the 'coupon price'

    • There was an order change email coming to my inbox yesterday, but it didnt say anything about the coupon though. My order is still shipped. Do they cancel yours?

      • I am still trying to contact them to understand what is going on. They're saying that they don't handle the coupons, ebay does.
Currently: the price WITH the coupon is pending in my bank account, and the item has been shipped. I am waiting for a response to see if I am going to be charged the extra $317, if so I will try for a refund.

        • If you could give an update for this would be great. If it's not troublesomee for you of course. So far Ebay has not informed me yet.

          • @basicconsumer123: Will do. Still no reply yet, but aparently the laptop will be arriving at my door within the next 3 hours.
The $1,271 has been processed now, with no pending transaction of $317

            • @TheGusGus42: Same for me as well, got the laptop with the tax invoice of $1589 but paid 1271 for it

              • @basicconsumer123: Turns out, ebay does the pricing on their end, but lenovo's invoices will be full price.
Silly and confusing, but we're not going to be charged the extra $317

                • @TheGusGus42: @TheGusGus42 Thanks for the update, it wouldn't be a solid deal with that extra. Just out of curiosity, how long does the battery last for yours? Mine is only around 3.5 hours. Not sure if that's normal

                  • @basicconsumer123: I'm not sure sorry, I've only set it up with the software that I like so far, and am yet to use it properly.
