    Here for the 8gb comment

      nah, its a Mac ;)

      • +8

I’ve heard that M2 Ultra Pro Max Ultimate it will be so advanced and courageous that can use 4GB as only stupid CPUs would need more for basic stuff.

        • +4

I heard they're going back to 640kb for the M3.

Memory is fast, things get smaller when they travel fast, or through the reality distortion field.

          • +2

@ihfree: HODL. Can’t wait. Best $2999.99 to be spent next year for the entry level Macbook.

            • +1

              @ALBastru: I'm saving my $2999.99 for 512GB DDR7 CL1 to run 1 Chrome tab on Windows 12.

              • +3

                @ihfree: Yes, that will compliment nicely the new Intel Core i13 15346g7 with 23 threads, 8 P cores, 6 Q cores, 5 E cores.

                • -1

@ALBastru: Apple M4 Chip comes with no SSD, connect to ios online to use ios18. But wait! Users need to own an iPhone, iWatch and apple TV inorder to be allowed access to iOs.

                  • +1

@shegeloaf: I hope I can use an iCloud subscription in order to save those fancy 5k videos uploaded via NBN LightningFast tier: 123 Mbps Down/ 1.23Mbps Up for just $109.99 for the first 3 months after a $79.99 discount so I can then watch them on my superb iPad with Gel Peninsula and Retina XRT Ultra with A.I. ambient contrast powered by next gen Siri iAtomic.

When its really ‘bout the 256gb SSD

    • +3

stayed for the price match at Officeworks afterthought.

    • +1

Here for the 4 gb of unified memory is all you need for web browsing comment.

  • +4

anywhere that has the 16gb/512gb model?

    • +1

Sadly not. You have to buy from Apple. Hard pass on the 8GB model. Only good enough for very light work, but not with lots of browser tabs open or any serious work. It’s disappointing that Apple pairs a decent CPU with a mere 8GB of RAM.

        • +1

          Interesting read, cheers.

        • -1

Great Read. All companies are trying to manipulate buyers to spend more and what gives them more profit.

When we realise this then we can see why prices and features are limited on certain models. In the past we would buy a base model mac then swap out the ssd or ram to suit us, but even apple have blocked that.

They have even blocked our ability to repair the mac by using a chip on all their components.

      • +2

I run multiple browsers with many tabs and spreadsheets opens. No issue yet on my 2022 MacBook 8gb. Everything just opens instantly.

        • +1

Your SSD may be wearing out unnecessarily.

          • @BuyNow Think Later: Unlikely to be an issue within the machine's lifetime. If it was a more memory intensive workload, there would be ground for concern.

      • +1

for most laptops id agree but i think the base model for the air is perfect for light use, including 100 tabs open. check the reviews and comparisons out, you'd be happily surprised

      • I concur bought an 8gb m1 mac mini and it's pretty much useless for our excel spreadsheets or any video editing.

Only capable of light browsing work and photoshop

    • +3

Cheapest for 16/512gb is probably aoc edu store at $2370, but at that point you might as well spring for a base mbp 14 for $200 or so more

      • i thought about that but i feel the form factor of the air is too hard to beat

        • +1

But 120hz screen, with high peak brightness, extra screen real estate, better CPU performance are too good of a deal.

  • +1

    Price match at OW?

  • +2

Gift card from Shopback would provide 2.5% cashback. Extra savings around $37.95.

  • +16

    FYI all:

"…the base Air’s 256GB of storage is stored on a single NAND chip instead of two … and sure enough, the storage is a lot slower than the prior M1 Air or M2 models with 512GB. Unless you’re able to get the base model M2 Air on sale for a sizable discount, I’d stay away from it."

    https://www.theverge.com/laptop-review/23207440/apple-macboo…

    • +8

99% of people using the base model air aren't going to notice the minor difference

      • +4

Agree, which then makes Air M1 a compelling proposition still.

    • +3

Most people won't notice any real world difference.

    • Isn't this a sizeable discount? And Verge usually an Apple critic?

    • +7

Always found this to be an odd argument on a device like the MacBook Air. From memory, it was a drop from 2200r/2800w to 1400r/1500w.
Most people using these devices will be downloading from a network/internet which isn't going to come close to those speeds. If you're pulling very large files off an external drive (100GB+) sure there will be a difference of a few minutes - but if you only have 256GB of storage how often are you transferring 100GB+ files to and from it?

  • Any macbook pro 14" deals?

  • +1

If only there was a 16gb for a good price.

  • +1

    Confirmed OW pricebeat, $1442.48.

  • Just pricebeat at OW $1442
    Thanks OP!

  • Waiting for Ipad deal 🥲

  • Officeworks is such a PITA to price beat. Customer Service Centre is closed. Have to go in store, and no guarantee they will beat.

    • They will beat it…I’ve never had issues with Amazon.

However I did have issues the other day where they refused to price match with Umart for some AirPods. Apparently since there’s no Umart in Wagga they did not honour it.

      • +2

Issue is by the time I get to office works, there is a risk Amazon's price changes, they sell out or Office Works reduce their price to prevent people from using price beat. Happened to me many times before, ending in a wasted trip.

        • drive/walk/run faster then. Spend less time on the 🎹

  • +9

Spec'd at 8/256GB, I still think the M1 Air is a better choice for most people.

Also, for those championing '16GB or die' in every laptop thread: while I agree that 16GB should be the minimum offered in 2022 (even in the student/consumer market), a lot can be done on Apple silicon and Mac OS (or even Linux) with 8GB of RAM and a fast SSD. I suspect that in >= 90% of use cases, people couldnt tell the difference.

    YMMV.

    • +1

Mac OS X compresses RAM, pretty good for excessive browser tabs. With sufficiently parallel CPUs to handle the compression overhead an 8gb ram system can behave like a 16gb ram system used to.

      • +2

Mac OS implemented memory compression before Windows did, but Windows has implemented that feature many years ago now (think it was windows 8).

An 8GB RAM system acting like a 16GB system due to compression… not a chance. Memory compression also has a performance impact, but still heaps better then swapping.

    • Your percentages can be wrong.

  • +10

Just priced matched at OW too and used coles mastercards to purchase for another 7.48% off!

    • +1

      Legend

  • Works with iPhone and iPad; Space Grey

Ok, that will suffice for the price

  • -5

    Bad Apple bad!

For this price people are expecting the OCed M2 chip with 32GB of DDR6 RAM, 144hz screen and 3TB of M2 SSD storage…..

This is utterly unacceptable and a failure on Apple’s part to satisfy the mob!

    • +6

      Not funny.

      • -1

        It's pretty funny and truthy.

There are way too many Ozbargainers who fail to understand these machines and think a computer's only purpose is games.

"I can buy a gaming laptop that weighs 5kg, has a 15" screen, plastic construction, 1 hour battery life, a 1% sRGB, 640x480 res, mono sound, and, a combined TDP that makes ETH mining look OK for less."

    • +4

      Cringe

  • OOS

  • +1

Just price matched with JB and Officeworks but preferred OW for extra 5% off, cam down to $1442. Only Space Grey, they won’t allow other color.

    • Is that with catch of the day?

  • No longer showing this price at Amazon, but Officeworks happily price beat Catch.

    • Did you price match in store? The phone centre is not opening at weekends?

      • In store

    • How did you get OW to price beat Catch? I just tried calling up and they couldn't find the model number on Catch so denied the price beat.

  • Here OW won’t match Catch because of no item model no. Very stupid reason.

    • +1

Same thing with bunnings. A lot of their tool multi-packs from dewalt, bosch, aeg, stanley, have a independant serial number/item model. Bunnings have them custon made so they don't have to price match and beat. Not all packs are like that however, but a lot are.
Sometimes they'll have 2×batteries instead of 1 or whatever….. just gotta look at the model numbers

  • Catch of the day is out of stock!

  • I came to Officeworks, and the stock at Apple Amazon is gone. What the… and they don’t price beat or match any more

  • Ahh just missed this. Is there a way to still get this deal with OW price match?

    • +2

they wouldn’t do it for me. I guess next time I’ll just buy straight from other retailers when they have good deal. Wouldn’t bother wasting my time and petrol driving to Officeworks to support their business but then for them to deny me, and me losing out the deal. Arggggh.

  • -1

Just sold on marketplace for 1600 after price matching at Officeworks this morning. Not bad.

  • Thanks OP! Unfotunately sold out so cant PM officeworks but managed to do it with JB hifi… sucks with the timing difference in WA

  • Damn. OW price beat for this is insane value on a recently released Apple Product.

Out of curiosity, does OW price beat Apple Education Store if you’re eligible?

    • No, you are not a student at OW :/

  • Anyone manage to price match at JB or Officeworks once the deal had already expired at Amazon/catch?

  • Curious …..know they check website before price match so say it's missed

  • +1

can't believe this. i just boguht my 8gb/256gb air last week via AOC store.
i'm gutted with the fact some here have price matched OW and then used Coles mastercard GC for that extra savings.

  • +1

It’s crazy how and iphone cost more than this

    • +3

And S22 Ultra also costs more. Go figure.

  • +1

Picked up a Silver off FB market place for $1100, base model, lady bought it from amazon then realised was too small GB on setting it up, don't think she realised she could of returned it, bought another 1TB one, was out of the 30 day return by time she sold it to me anyway.
Brand new condition and still available for apple care, scored.

  • Any thoughts as to whether this deal might reoccur in the near future?
