    Cool-looking mattress

  • Hey OP / anyone, any opinions on this (Fibaro) vs Shelly? I've only just started looking into options to make all my lights smart to add to my Home Assistant setup. Obviously very different price points & protocols but keen to hear about any good / bad experiences & other criteria you considered (e.g., reliability, responsiveness, etc).

Firstly, both will achieve the exact same thing - making existing light switches smart while retaining manual control at the wall.

      Pros for Shelly:

Great value and for the price these devices are packed with features. No hub required. Much easier to set up and work with Google home, Alexa, Home Assistant out of the box. Regular firmware updates. MQTT and rest API control as an option.

      Cons for Shelly:

Potential to create WiFi traffic if you have too many devices (but this isn't really a problem until you hit 25+ devices and easily solved by upgrading your router). Also need good wifi signal at installation point as they don't mesh like the zwave ones.

      Pros for fibaro:

The relays will build a strong mesh around your house, and you can get wireless Zwave sensors (door/window, motion, temperature, lux) to piggy back off this mesh. Independent of your WiFi network so no interference. High quality device.

One set-up, rock solid and you can set and forget. With a strong mesh, the system is lighting fast and reliable.

      Cons:

Hub is required and can be finicky to set up with pairing to the hub.

Both will provide a great experience but think about your setup and which direction you want to go in. (E.g. there are no great reliable battery powered WiFi door window sensors with long battery life. Having a Zwave mesh solves this issue as you can install Zwave door sensors which have really long battery life) and don't need to communicate all the way back to the hub (only to the nearest powered device).

Let us know if any other questions between the two!

Awesome. Thanks for the concise summary. Tough decision! I have UniFi gear through my house so leaning towards Shelly given the attractive price point :/

  • Seems like a decent deal to me, even though I'm not in need of this right now.

Up-voted for the clear and informative post.
