"Hall effect joystick" means it's using magnetic sensors, rather than a potentiometer, to measure deflection.

In theory, that means no joystick drift.

    • Good thing?

      • +11

Yes. Joystick drift is when the controller misreads the analogue joystick, so it thinks you're pushing left (or up or wherever) when you're not.

Nintendo had a bunch of it with the Switch, but most controllers can suffer from it.

        • +2

When did joystick drift become a thing? Wasn't till I got a switch and a PS4 did I experience it. Before those consoles I've never heard of it.

          • @pufffdragon: Because manufacturers had to balance the quality of the parts versus the cost to produce it, especially with mass-production. With later consoles - such as the PS5 and Switch - they decided it was best (supply and demand-wise) to go for the latter.

          • @pufffdragon: Most controllers have been pretty crap quality in the last decade, and were declining prior to that. Even the n64 analogue sticks often needed replacing, and the PC joysticks I used in the 90s wore out, people would pull them apart and service them.
More evidence of declining quality is the loss of micro-switches on basically all controllers these days, replaced with the cheapest possible rubber domes. Buttons now remind me of TV remotes.

As far as joystick drift specifically, the effect of cheap or worn out joysticks could be reduced if these controllers allowed us to do proper calibrations including fine grained deadzones.

            • +1

              @ssfps:

proper calibrations including fine grained deadzones

              Exactly right.

I know on the GameCube, the console OS automatically calibrated the analogue sticks on start up and therefore drift did not happen unless the stick was so far gone that the deadzone became close to 100%. Why Nintendo doesn't do this with the Switch? Doesn't make money when the console fixes your controllers for you.

              • @skid: Yeah, the lack of this support really looks like a kind of planned failure / "controllers-as-a-service". At the very least, they are happy for them to fail, even if not actively avoiding this software feature.

          • @pufffdragon: Never saw drift on the Atari 2600 controller!

    • What's joystick drift? Never heard

      • +42

It's when your joystick thinks it's in Japan and racing down a mountain whilst Euro dance music is blasting in the background.

        • +1

Hahaha. The joystick goes Tokyo drift.

      • +1

Basically, the materials wear down and dust gets inside and it causes the sensors to detect movement when none is being inputted. This can cause characters to walk to their deaths and impact aim. Hall effect joysticks are immune from what I've seen.

    • joystick drift. the worst kind of drifting

  • +10

Very tempted, but I barely use my Pro 2 to justify this purchase.

    • +2

      Same. Lol

I ordered mine last week, wasn't as cheap as this but it arrived quite quickly. Good controller, buttons and joystick feel is nice, but I was slightly thrown off by the analog triggers since the switch doesn't normally use them. Overall quite comfortable and responsive. Shapewise I prefer this controller to the official pro controller, feels better in the hand. The customisability with the software is surprisingly good, been meaning to test this controller on my PC.

The 'lift controller from dock and shake to wake up the switch' feature is quite different but it works. My girlfriend quite likes the controller as well so looks like I'll be using these codes to get another one.

This or Xbox controller for PC gaming? Currently using an xbox360 wireless controller - worth upgrading?

    • If you don't plan on using it for the switch then get the 2.4G version which lacks bluetooth but is also 20USD cheaper

      • +2

The 2.4G version doesn't use hall effect sticks though, so can be more likely to experience joycon drift.

        • +3

Yeah I'd pay a bit more for the dock, better sticks and option of using it on the switch later.

          • +2

@Merlict: Definitely, and there could always be the potential for using it for next gen Nintendo since these are firmware upgradeable as well.

The dock is quite nice as well. The USB port that holds the 2.4ghz receiver is functional as well. If you plug the dock into your PC, you don't need to plug the dongle into a separate port, it works from the dock

            • @DangerNoodle: That's actually really good to know! Will definitely consider this if my Pro 2 has any issues in the future.

    • Personally, nothing has topped the Xbox 360 controller for me. I'd be keen to try this.

      • +1

Depends what you play. Xbox X|S controller has one of the best dpads around, whereas the xbox360 controller was one of the worst. I have 2 xbox 360 controllers and used many others, and all the dpads were utterly atrocious. Missed clicks, mushy with no feedback/clickyness, imprecise mechanism to move in a particular cardinal direction, forget diagonals.
If you don't need a dpad for anything, yeah the xbox360 controllers were pretty great considering how cheap they were. I believe their near ubiquity made XInput the standard it is today.

    • +1

The buttons being labelled wrong for PC is really annoying. I have both and ended up buying an Xbox controller just for PC because it bothered me a lot

      • You can just move the buttons around, if you open it up.

Iā€™m getting $104.18 delivered ā€” please update the OP with clearer instructions on how to stack coupons to achieve the price in the title.

    • +2

I'm getting 89.50AU with the code, spend and save and the coin discount. You'll need some coins from their free games.

    • The 5 per 30 discount only works with the Aliexpress app. You open Cashrewards in your phone browser and open the Aliexpress through there, then apply the coupon (an alternate coupon that gives a bit of a smaller discount is 11SPROMOS6). I got around $91 AUD plus cashback.

  • +1

I would like to purchase one but I'm afraid as this is their first batch for this controller and they could have problems I want Amazon to sell it.

    • +1

Good call. I recall seeing a YT reviewer with a sticky shoulder button.

    • It is available through Amazon US. I was going to buy it through there but it was around $150AU at the time compared to this price of $89.50 shipped. It's shipped directly from 8bitdo so you shouldn't have issues with warranty. I'm waiting on my second controller now, first one was great, much better than the switch pro controller for me.

      • Sending it all the way back to China is definitely more of a hassle than sending back to Amazon Australia. I will just patiently wait , it will eventually be available in Amazon AUS

  • +1

Tempting, very tempting. I've had the pro plus and am using the pro2 now. Both are fantastic controllers and this looks to have great build quality too. I'll wait it out for now.

    • +1

Is that a reason to neg?

    • +1

      You snooze, you lose.

  • +1

    Does it work with Xbox?

    • +2

      Nope, Switch and PC

    • No, and it's unlikely 8bitdo (or any other third party) will make a wireless Xbox controller. Microsoft forbids it unfortunately, refuses to license it.

  • +1

Have the Pro2 and love it. Got one, thanks op

  • gonna wait until pro apex player start using it and see their feedback

  • +2

You should still be able to use 11SPROMOS6 instead of 11SUPERPROMOS7.

    • Thanks this coupon still works

  • 8bitdo QA is quite nice

  • Black or white looks better?

  • Are the A/B/X/Y buttons on the ultimate better than those on the pro 2?
