Getting $280.65 shipped. Don't know if I should hold until black friday.

  • Is it worth upgrading (or should I say downgrading?) from 3900XT?

I will lose 4 cores, but might gain in gaming performance?

I have a RTX3070 as the GPU and playing games at 1440p (reBar enabled)

Trying to make an educated decision :)

    Thanks

    • +2

You might consider reselling your 3900xt. Gamingwise it will be an improvement for sure, as very few games if any actually use 12 cores.

    • +5

You're going to be GPU limited, some games like MSFS will see benefits but gains would be very minimal otherwise.

    • +1

      https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-5700x/16.html

With a 3090 at 1440p there's about a 10% difference on average, hardly worth it imho.

      • AFAIK there's the argument of 1% and 0.1% lows being much improved.

  • +22

I think this deal is basically too good to avoid on AM4?

  • +1

is it cheaper to build you own? Or buy from bpctech's pre builts? I want 5700X with a 6700XT… everything else can be cheap as possible.

    • +1

Cheaper to buy your own if you're willing to wait. Buying prebuilt is better if you need the desktop very soon.

If you want cheaper peripherals I would recommend buying parts yourself. OzB has good deals for cases/monitors every now and then. Motherboards are harder to find a good deal for but you can shop around and do your own research.

    • +5

I wouldn't think that if i were you, I'd rather have a 5600 with a 6600 XT if it meant it'll keep my whole pc safe and much less likely to fail.

Things you shouldn't cheap out on:

PSU - Crucial (not the brand) to get a decent quality one that wont fail quickly or take out other components if it fails.
Storage - While some may recommend that u can cheap out on storage, I personally recommend not to as some brands or even most budget options will start slowing down once ur near full which defeats the purpose of SSD being fast.

Things you can cheap out on:

Monitor - has nothing to do with your components thus not affecting them at all even if it fails.
Ram - As long as you get the recommended speed and latency then thats enough.
Motherboards - Only if u don't see urself upgrading in the next couple of years or at least anything this gen.

      Tryna remember somethings else haha

      • +1

        +1 regarding the PSU.

I've had friends with cheap/faulty PSUs that have looked other components.

      • +1

Definitely PSU. For Storage though I'd rather have a higher storage decent brand than a lower storage 'prestigious' brand.
For example this deal was 2x240GB for ~$38 whereas this is 250GB for $52.

In fact for storage, I highly rate Crucial MX500. It's not really "cheaping out" but price is very affordable compared to other brands. Last deal $85 for 1TB

  • Can also be used on a B550 mobo with a bios update for those interested who have a B550 wanting to upgrade an older cpu

    • +1

      Even b350 now

      • +1

That's unreal!! Gotta give it to AMD promising a 5year platform and actually delivered. Not everyone can afford a 100% new rig…. mobo, cpu, gpu, psu, ram, etc…. by allowing older mobo setups to upgrade and put new life into a rig simply by using a new cpu is fantastic. Especially over the past few years with the economy, GFC, affordability of ready-available parts (which were hard to find) due to shortages and greedy bastards, people on a budget can still get a few more years out of their rig by changing 1× component =awesome. At these prices and AM5 not being a big jump in stats over AM4, you'd be crazy not to upgrade

        • Well they were kicking and screaming till they eventually supported it on 400/300 series mobos, took almost a year.

    • This I have wondered if you need to update a bios to make a cpu compatible you would need to have installed an already compatible cpu update the bios and then insert the intended cpu?

      • It all depends on what motherboard you have. I have a asus rog B550-A which needed to be flashed to support the 5700X. I didn't need anything installed… no ram, gpu, hdd's, nothing. Inserted the USB and pressed a button on the mobo and it was done. Some of the older boards i am not familiar with, whether they have that flash feature or not. I do know that SOME need stuff installed to boot. You would have to look into your motherbpard features on their website to see.

  • Is it worth going from a 5600x to a 5700x or am i better off waiting for a good 5800x3d deal?

    • +8

      Waiting

    • +2

5800x3d or get the newer stuff

    • +1

      Wait if you are gaming?

    • +2

There's barely much in terms of gaming performance between those two. I'd wait for the 5800x3d in black friday as that's probably gonna be the best time to buy.

      • +2

5800x3d is similar to intel 13600 in terms of performance

      • +1

The best time to buy a 5800x3d will be when AMD's 7000 series x3d chips come out next year.

        • +1

If someone is willing to wait that long and is not in a rush then yes.

    • +1

Absolutely not. 5800x3d for gaming, or a 5900/5950 for productivity. Those are the only on mobo upgrades that make sense for the 5600x as it's a really, really decent CPU.

    • +2

Look up the games where the cache in the 5800x3d helps. Then decide if paying 2x is worth it.

  • Does this have the bonus game

  • +4

To tell you how insane the value of this thing is, it's on par with an i7 11700 which is 8 core/ 16 threads 11th gen

  • +5

Running a 3600 and I dont even need a 5600 this but God damn this is a good price.

    • Same I have a 3600 too and no issues. But I've begun contemplating…

    • If you have good ebay feedback you can probably sell your 3600 for a decent percentage of this price
They seem to be going for around $120 (dont forget to add a 15% or so ebay fee)

      • +1

Brother has a 1600, I know where my 3600 will be going lol

    • lol same… might consider during black friday when and if it further drops for. 5700x

  • Worth upgrading to any of these from a 3600? currently have a 3070 with it.

    • +3

You wont see much of a difference in performance unless you're running 1080p 240hz or something.
But, if you upgrade the GPU you'll start being bottlenecked by that 3600, so it's fine to upgrade it in anticipation of a 4070 or something i'd say.

    • From what I can tell, CPU bottleneck is at high FPS, what monitor you running?

      • GIGABYTE M27Q @ 1440p

Find more of these, pretty extreme watching Cs go go from 400fps to 600 fps from gpu bottleneck at 1080p but other games only really get 1-10 fps improvement from a better cpu (which is weird cos the CPU is never at 100%…)

Running 3600+3080 3440x1440p @ 75hz don't think it'll affect me unless I go 144hz but then again not sure the 3080 has the power for that.

  • Including shipping the 5600 is $180 / $20 off, should I wait to for it to drop further? Is that likely?

    • +2

      No one knows.

It's down quite a lot right now, presumably because AMD/retailers have to reduce them so they dont compete with the reduced price 7000 series.
Depending on where AMD's product strategy goes from here, this black friday might be the lowest prices we'll ever see on these parts.
If they keep AM4 around to cater to the low end, the prices will keep coming down. But if they discontinue AM4 and rerelease zen 3 on AM5 to bring the low end onto that platform (which I think would be a good idea), perhaps rebadging them as 6600E/GE and 6700E or something, then the supply for these models will dry up quickly as soon as they start diverting the zen 3 chiplets into those product lines before launch.

The main question is "is it worth waiting until black friday?", and again, I have no idea.
I think If your top preference is another product, like if you're holding out for a 5900X or 5800X3D, i'd say definitely wait, but if you really wanted the 5600 or 5700X, i think if you buy now, you're at most risking missing out on a slightly better deal, like $150 or $160 but with free shipping. And if it's only a small decrease, you can just think of it as paying a premium for pseudo express shipping.
Like seriously, it's not gonna drop to $80.

      • +1

Very good insight, thank you. Decided to buy now just so its locked in.

  • 5800x3d has been steady at its current price, feels like it wont drop further

  • Oh goodness. Was going to wait for a 5900x, but that's cheap

  • Why is 5600 more expensive than the g version? Is the g version the best value of the 4 CPUs here? Has graphics and cooling it seems Tempted to buy although I've been holding out for an i5 12600k

    • 5600 has better performance than the 5600g. Not worth getting the 5600g if you have a dedicated graphics card.

    • +1

G version is less powerful as it uses smaller die because of igpu

    • +3

The 5600 is Vermeer (chiplet) and the 5600G is Cezanne (monolithic).

    • They are close only in model number, but the G versions are significant slower as they are a different architecture. It's a bit of naming trickery.

    • It seems that the x version is the best from YouTube vids. So maybe the ryzen 7 might be the best option

    • Don't underestimate the power of the 5600G. I have two systems with 5600 non-G and the 5600G and cannot see any difference in games. Also proven by Gamers Nexus that even the RTX 4090 is not limited by PCI-e3.0 vs PCI-e4.0.
      https://youtu.be/v2SuyiHs-O4

My 5600G system can run every application and many games at 1080p or 1440p low (with no dedicated graphics), depending how much you care for graphic settings. I'd recommend 32gb ram if you don't run a dedicated card given the 5600g graphics will pull 4gb from your system memory to run the graphics. Though, for heavy production workflows you'd go with at least a 5700x.

      • +3

Im sorry but a hard disagree there. Either the games you are running is bottlenecked with your gpu setup or otherwise but it’s simply not true to call 5600g comparable to 5600. The former has half the L3 cache even ignoring everything else and that alone will have a significant impact in games.

    • 5600g is a 5500 with an igpu and perform similar to a 3600 due to their limited cache, 5600 is in a higher tier of performance.

  • Thinking of building my first pc these holidays. Hoping for some good BF deals for the 3060. Is there a motherboard people generally recommend for the 5600?

    • +2

I'd say for mobo, the best bet would be to wait for black friday deals and pick your favourite out of them.
If you get fixated on one particular model to the point it makes you miss out on a good deal on an equivalent or better board it would be counter productive.
Just know that B450 boards can run ryzen 5000 in a pinch, but you lose PCIe 4.0 which is an issue for some janky gpus like the RX 6500 and perhaps future gpus.
B550 is the the best value if you want pcie 4.0.
Other than that just look out for mobo deals and ask for help again when one of those pops up.

      • Alright, thank you very much. I'll make sure to keep an eye out.

  • Does the 30 dollar off stack with the discount?

    • +1

The price already factored in the coupon code.

  • +2

Incredible prices, don't even need to wait for Black Friday

  • Jesus H

  • They get you on the mother board cost though for new builds

    • AM4 motherboards are dirt cheap and Zen 3 works in even low-end outdated motherboards.

      • They are not cheap at the moment. Similar pricing to mid pandemic supply shortages.

It's budget but still under $100. Won't have any problem with a 5600 or even 5700X (maybe skip the 5900X).

          • @Yuri Lowell: I guess i just meant the non trash variant boards are all expensive. Six months ago you could find msi b450 mortars for near that price.

  • ANY RYZEN 3K ?

  • What's the cheapest functioning computer build?

Is it time to upgrade from i5-4690 and a r9 270x?

    • +3

Cheapest functioning computer build is your current one for $0. We have that processor on some PCs at work and its fine for a PC that just functions fine.

Depends what you need it for if you need to upgrade and how much you'll need to pay

      • Thanks I'll continue to hold on.
Ozbargain FOMO tempation is always lurking.

  • For budget gaming CPU, the best choice probably 12400f and 5600. Which one? 12400f is slightly faster but also slightly more expensive. Which one? Get neither one on special. Just my 2c.

  • What a time to be alive!

    • +2

They are fine. A spin off from eBay where they run a conglomerate of sellers.

    • +2

These guys have been one of the Ozbargain go-to's for computer components for years. I've used them plenty and haven't had any trouble, that being said I've never needed to return anything before.

      • +1

Ditto. Never an issue and I use for Business purposes too.

      • +2

Well I bit the bullet and just paid for a 5700X. Hopefully can sell my 3700X for $230-250…

Thanks to you, Yuri and Freddo…

      • My order is still in a state of 'pick' and has not processed further since the 12.11.22. At what point should I be concerned?

        • +1

Australia Post just lodged processing of the delivery for me today so it looks like they were a bit slow on shipping them out.

          • +1

@DecoAus: Just got a tracking number this afternoon as well.

  • +1

literally just bought the 5700x on amazon. Is it pain-free returns no need to pay for delivery?

    • +1

      At what price?

    • Depends if it's shipped by Amazon AU or not

  • Hopefully, Black Friday can do better. Shipping is $22 to regional VIC.

  • When did B350 boards get updates to work with Ryzen 5*** cpus?
    I can't find official info.

    • about a year ago, go to MB site and check cpu compatibility

    • That's because it didn't officially. I can't think of one b350 board that does. Check manufacturer website, maybe some of the really high end ones do.

  • +2

3600x owner here. Tempting but nah

  • bought the 5600. I keep telling myself i'll need a faster chip for productivity tasks…but I won't. seems like a decent price. now need a motherboard and other parts. Come on black friday!

  • +1

    5600 oos =[

    • +1

it appeared OOS for me too but then I tried again and it let me order? Maybe they were being held while people had in their cart? worth double checking.

      • Thanks for that it went through!

  • Argh I bought the 5600 from them like yesterday morning for $195 + delivery 😥
