I don't understand why people praise these air fryers so much. The capacity is crazy small :/ I got a kogan 5l one years ago for like $50 or something, is fantastic.
Not to mention, an air fryer is a pretty basic device (heating element, fan etc), so not like you're getting huge benefits over a cheap one.

    • +4

Yeah, but that Kogan label doesn't come off easily.

    • -5

Its the same like Dyson stick vacs vs Dreame. People just go with the known brands when they have excess to spend.

      • +6

Quite often (not always) known brands provide a better service and you can get spare parts after a few years and for older models. I had great free services and free parts from Dyson.

        • Quite often (always) you can buy 2 to 3 items for the price of one when buying cheaper - well reviwed items. So there is that!

          • +3

@John Doh: I was talking about service and spare parts so your appliance will last longer and you don't have to throw a cheap one in the bin and replace it every few years. Buying 3 items instead of one is more waste and effort.

            • +2

@Marty-69: That is if you know how to repair. Most people dont and the repair cost in Australia is prohibitive.

      • +3

Kogan has terrible customer service. I bought extra care for my kogan fan for extra 2 years but they didn't cover broken hinge and walked me in circles until i stopped bothering. Would never buy kogan again

        • +3

From what I read, kmart airfryers have one of the best reviews on choice and productreviews.com.au. You should always select cheaper products based on user-reviews.

          https://www.productreview.com.au/c/air-fryers

          • +1

@John Doh: The users of kmart air fryers have not come in contact with phillips.

            • +1

@shegeloaf: You didnt get it. Choice reviewers reviewed them and they almost have the same score. Productreview.com shows reliability score and performance score where they both are at the same level.

If you still want to buy philips knowing that you are getting the best, then nothing wrong with it. Would I spend that much on philips? Probably not as cheaper one does the same job and I dont need them that often.

Recently i got a 1200$ FP washing machine and regretted how bad it was designed. More money not necessarily mean better products.

        • My brother also got the same kogan airfryer as me… had an issue and they sent him a replacement… shrugs

        • +1

Extra care isn't even run by kogan…

Tho the extra care company are slow and useless

      • Dreame isn’t cheap lol

        • Compared to Dyson it is!

    • +3

Phillips one is a lot nicer than the cheaper ones. But the mid range ones (like ninja or cheaper Phillips etc) aren't much better than the cheaper ones.
My Target one would need to cool down before you let it run twice, it was very annoying
The Phillips one gets hot extremely quick, don't need to pre heat, the tray slides in and out nicely, it's much easier to clean, and the space is much larger and better laid out. E.g. can fit a whole chicken for a roast

    • I have a larger Kogan one I bought for around 100 or something on sale. Yes it's a nice large one with digital controls and all that. Then a couple of years later my mum wanted a air fryer so I bought a Phillips lower model for around $120 or something. I tried them side by side for a few different items.

The phillips always cooked faster, more consistently (the internal temperature of the Meats cooked were better and thoroughly cooked). The downside is mine is a dial control so nowhere near the same level of control as my Kogan for timing and temp and frustrating to use.

I do think these 300$ Phillips air fryers seem way too pricey for the pros but having proper digital controls would be something I wish my Phillips had.

  • Whats the difference between this one and the HD9650/93

    • +6

This one can auto cook frozen chips, fish, drumsticks and whole chickens. It will adjust the temperature and time remaining using sensors. It wasn’t worth the extra $100 to me, I bought the 9650/93 instead.

To get much more accurate sensing, I priced matched the Meater Plus at JB using the $10 coupon and bought a $140 Ultimate Teens gift card which brought it to a little over $125.

      🤌😘

      • Probably a dumb question, can you put that thing inside the air fryer, or do you need to open the air fryer half way to measure the temperature.

        • The meater can go in the air fryer. It’s intended to be in the meat the whole time while it cooks.

          • +1

@braddsey: Oh wow, am surprised the battery inside does not explode!

            • @John Doh: I would assume the battery is in the tip - the part that goes into the meat. the temperature here shouldn't get so high (unless you're cooking skills aren't up to scratch!). I've cooked roasts in my weber Q, don't remove the probe. greatest meat cooking device i've come across - highly recommend it!

              https://support.meater.com/faqs/max-temp-meater#:~:text=The%….

              • @braddsey: Yup, makes purrfect sense! Will grab one sometime.

  • +14

Not all air fryers are created equally. Once you use Philips Airfryer, you cannot go back to any other ones. The rest are garbage.

    • -7

why though? does it automatically add spices to your food or something? -_-
At the end of the day, it heats food… what feature does this have that makes "the rest garbage"?

      • +9

I'll take a punt and assume you're not trolling, hexedhavoc. You asked "does it automatically add spices to your food or something", it doesn't; however, this particular model does have Smart Sensing technology, making it the only Airfryer that automatically adjusts time and temperature during cooking for perfectly cooked dishes.

*As an aside, I bought my previous Philips XL airfryer after someone posted on here about it in 2016, and it was still going strong. I just sold it on marketplace for $120 to accommodate the upgrade to this one.

        • Does that sensor actually work, it sounds an awful lot like a gimmick to me.

Edit: looking at the info its just cooking presets, you select chips and it sets the temp/time to suit chips, not sensing anything. So what makes this better than the other cheaper xxl model then?

          • -2

@Postal Dude: Yea its totally a gimmick, to sucker people in.
Not to mention, how hard is it to google how long to put something in for and at what temp… set it and you're done. I've had my $50 air fryer for years and never had any issues or things not cooked properly.

      • Phillips are just better.

    • What about the oven style like this? https://www.target.com.au/p/breville-28l-air-fryer-oven-lov6…

      Larger capacity and more presets.

      • I'd imagine cleaning the interior would be a lot more hassle as you can't just throw the whole assembly into the sink like you can for the "traditional" style of airfryer? Would be interested to hear first-hand experiences though.

I mean, sure, it has what looks like a drip tray to capture most of the fat/oil, but I there'd be a fair bit of splatter to the walls and door surely.

        • I found it a lot easier to clean as its dishwasher safe.

      • +3

I switched from a phillips airfryer xxl to cuisinart express oven airfryer (https://www.myer.com.au/p/cuisinart-express-oven-air-fry-sil…) and loving it so much more. It's easier to clean, larger capacity and a lot more functions.

        • Interesting.

I've got in small Cuisinart steam oven and love the quality. The airfryer you link to is on special at $381. Very tempting

          • @jebdra: It’s $339 at a few other places if you Google it. I’ve also got their steam oven (never used the steam though). Wondering if this or the Philips is worth it. I just don’t get why an air fryer isn’t just another way of saying oven? Need to YouTube it.

Also there's the non lcd screen version of the Cuisinart at Target for $249. Looks the same thing just manually controlled.

            https://www.target.com.au/p/cuisinart-the-air-fry-plus/66046…

        • Could someone that has the Cuisinart one measure from the wall behind to the front of its front feet?

On the Cuisinart site they give the dimensions as this:
          35.5 cm (L) x 40 cm (W) x 35.6 cm (H)

          Does that actually mean
          35.5 cm Deep?

Also I presume the top surface of it gets pretty hot? Too hot to put another device (that has feet) on top of it?

        • +1

Excellent recommendation, thanks - switched purchase to Cuisinart Express

          • @aibargain: glad you like it! we might have to convert more of these phillip airfryer fans :p

      • Reviews on oven style air fryers are not that good when accessing hot cooked meal.

        • I was wary switching from phillips to cuisinart so read heaps of reviews when i bought the cuisinart. It seems to be rated very highly but i guess it depends on individuals.

Its been perfect for airfrying all the frozen food from costco for a quick weeknight dinner, nuggets n layer of chips for the kids, lamb roast, grilled veg etc. I cant seem to get it to cook kale chips as good as the phillips so it'll probably be a terrible airfryer for someone who survives on kale chips.

          • +1

@littleburrito: It is easy to toss the food around during cooking? In the phillips I just shake and toss around a few times during cooking.

            • +1

@shegeloaf: Not a tosser so cant really comment lol

The cuisinart basket is only 2-3cm tall so probably not suitable for tossing? I've always used tongs to flip my food halfway thru.

          • +1

@littleburrito: Kale chips? There's just some things that shouldn't go in an air fryer sorry.

    • Efficiency and wattage. Phillips have designed the interiors to provide fantastic airflow and they are generally more powerful than the competition which means they cook faster too.

    • +1

      I'm calling BS on that.
Got a Ninja unit that is less than half the price of the Philips with the cashback and it's fantastic.
Considered the Philips unit and whilst I've used one before, (It is great) it certainly is not twice the price better than a Ninja.

  • +6

Was slightly cheaper two days ago as I grabbed one; Good Guys FRENZY took it to 479.20, stacked with 10% cashback ($54.45), and $100 Philips Xmas Cashback, so $324.75.

    • Possibly stackable with their StoreCash offer too? I'm not familiar with that scheme but the way I'm reading it, it looks like you can effectively get $50 store credit by adding $20.80 worth of stocking filler to the order.

Obviously the potential combo is gone for now, but waiting for Black Friday to see whether stacking a discount code, cashback and the StoreCash offer might be a worthwhile thing, assuming something similar becomes available for Black Friday.

  • -4

For that price it should come with a $300 meat pack..

  • Commbank has a Myer $20 cashback when you spend $100 offer as well. Not sure if targeted. Ends in four days according to my app.

  • +2

We have this air fryer and use it almost daily. Once you have it and use it, you will wonder how you ever did with out it.

  • Anyone know if you can stack with discounted gift cards or does that void the cashback?

    • Cashrewards terms for Myer:

You may not be eligible for Cashback:
      - If a gift card is purchased or used as payment.

      • I'm talking about the Philips cashback…. That's what the deal was for.

    • ShopBack terms for Myer:

      Don’ts
      - Purchases made on the Myer app, Purchase of Giftcards and Purchases with the use of Giftcards ( Whether Partial / Fully ) / Myer Loyalty / Promo code not listed on ShopBack

  • Mmm interesting. I also price matched Jbhi-fi and want to buy via gift card.

I think the purchase receipt should not show gift cards.

  • Great price but Black only though. The sexy White (Champagne) colour not included.

  • +1

There's a lot of people here praising this brand without actually saying why, or having used a cheap model…

My $39 5L air fryer cooks everything perfectly on top, and when overloaded the heat circulates poorly and doesn't cook underneath very well, like any air fryer.

It seems like a bigger air fryer is going to be more important than a better brand.

  • +2

I'm just requoting a post I've made on Phillips airfryer to all the people who keep commenting why it is better than the cheapie airfryer. I even paid $503 for it back then (which was considered a bargain as I got them to apply a staff discount) so at this price it is unbelievable value.

You have to have used it and not just making chips and nuggets to honestly know the difference

Hi all, I just wanted to answer all the "is it any good" and "how does this compare to the" cheapies? Ambiano, anko, etc."

I've answered this in other posts but in summary this is a ridiculously crazy price for such a fantastic unit. The price is now only $200 more than (after Cashback). This is also the xxl one as well, the biggest one. Don't bother with the hd9861. I've got it, the intelligent sensor is good but not worth it. You end up not trusting it anyway when you are doing roasts and anything more complicated

Here's what I've said in the other post along with cooking tips:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/573898

Yes it is great when washing the tray and basket in the dishwasher. The surface coating doesn't "melt" off.

I started off with an Aldi Ambiano $89 Airfryer. That was great. But totally not dishwasher safe. The plastic around the basket track start to melt after repeated use. They tell you that it is not dishwasher safe.

I'm sure there are alot of comments on this but the Philips, although expensive is much much better than the kmart(Anko) and Aldi ones. I've tried all of them.

I've upgraded to Airfryer XXL hd8601 and can tell you it is in a league of its own. That extra $400 you pay (I paid $503 after haggling with jbhifi) was worth it for me. Overall if you're doing fish, chips, nuggets, they'll all produce similar results. But if you're into cooking roast crackling pork, garlic prawns, roast chicken, xo pipis, rack off lamb, etc. You'll notice a huge difference either through time saving, cooking control or outcome quality.

    • So an EXTRA $400, on top of this price, to do what I do in a glass bowl type, which is available most of the time on Facebook Marketplace for $20-$30: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12914476/redir. Oh and I think I forgot to say over in that comment… with a glass bowl you can clearly see what's happening at a glance, no need to pull out a draw to check for overcooking/burning which drops the temperature (good for getting great pork crackling). :-)

    "Kilowatts: 2200"

Holy moly, that's one powerful unit!

  • +1

I have one, but very hard to clear after used six month.

  • Anyone know if I match the price at JB Hifi and paid by gift card will I still be eligible to claim the $100 cashback from Philips?

  • The Auspure Airfryer has the highest rating on product review by a very long margin and with a significant number of reviews. It’s a fraction of the price too.
Has anyone tried both Auspure and Philips by chance ? A comparison would be good.
