Good price for a good unit.

Wow, what a great price. I just paid 279 for one of these 3 weeks ago

  • Does anyone know what is the idle power consumption? Powered on but with minimal traffic.
What does the PoE switch say about the power draw?

    • +2

      U6-Pro 6.01W
      U6-Lite 4.35W
      UAP-AC-Pro 4.2W
      UAP-nanoHD 5.1W

      • Thank you, exactly the info I need!
I am still running an AC access point which draws 3.7W. Time to do some maths!

        • Do you work out the running cost of all your devices?

          (genuinely interested)

          • @Master Bates: I assume they're trying to calculate if this will fit into their POE switch's power budget more than very carefully monitor the power consumption of all devices in a house. But I may be wrong…

          • +1

@Master Bates: Only for the computer / networking equipment. It's an occupational hazard from working within the energy industry. I want to minimize the idle energy consumption - both for financial and environmental reasons (in no particular order). Not that I can't afford the energy cost but being an OzBargainer definitely want to avoid unnecessary costs unless a functional requirement justifies it. I don't have any rackmounted equipment because I don't have dedicated space and have very low tolerance for noisy fans.

My setup consolidates into one Lenovo Tiny box with about 13W idle which hosts a virtualized router, recording two cameras, pihole, home assistant, active directory server, media server, etc. It's a big single-point-of-failure but it's a conscious decision to reduce energy consumption and forces me to learn to back up data properly. Additionally there's a PoE switch that consumes about 10W supplying one wireless access point and two cameras during the day. At night there's another extra 5W when the cameras' infrared lighting comes on.

My wireless access point requirement is low as most of my fixed devices have ethernet connections. The 802.11ac WAP (3.7W) has been more than sufficient. So moving to U6-Pro (6W) consumes more energy but yields very little additional gain for my use case. The only thing I can make use of Wifi6 is WPA3.

      My switch is reporting
      8w 153mA 52.9v class4

    • My Switch says my U6-Pro is currently drawing 6.03W (note that my switch is a US-8-60W so it only has 802.3af PoE ports and not the 802.3at port "technically" required by the newer U6 AP's - however I've not had any issues with it)

I also have a U6-LR running off another US-8-60W switch and it's port stats show the U6-LR is drawing 6.53W

      • Wow, that's really useful info. I also only have a 802.3af PoE switch so I did have to think about the cost of upgrading the switch too.

        Very tempted… Resisting……

        • +1

OK for completeness I also have a UAP-AC-LR (perhaps similar to your existing AC) connected which the switch port says is using 3.17W (it's connected to the same switch which has the U6-LR connected to it) - that US-8-60W has 3 devices connected to it drawing PoE (the last is a USW-Flex-Mini drawing 1.98W)

          • @Remorhaz: Thank you. These are very useful real-life data points that usually takes a lot of time to google around the web forums.

          • @Remorhaz: It's amazing you've got all the varieties of Ubiquiti WAPs under the sun. Is this for a show room or a tech enthusiast doing thorough product differentiation reviews? Or something else? (genuinely curious)

            • +1

@CoronavirusVaccine: No just home use (large 2 storey house so wanted multiple AP's to cover it) - I started with just the UAP-AC-LR at one end of the house and a FlexHD at the other end, but my wife was getting poor reception in her office so I bought a U6-LR and put it in there when it came out and there was a good deal on it. I since replaced the FlexHD with the U6-Pro (again when it was released and a good deal came out)

Does this come with a PoE+ injector?

    • I don't think any of the newer U6 AP's come with PoE injectors anymore - note as I posted above I havn't had any issues running a U6-Pro or U6-LR off an older 802.3af PoE port - for a while I was running the U6-LR off an older PoE injector (which I got with my UAP-AC-LR I think) as well with no issues

Damn… still a few more days until I get my $80 ebay voucher for the plus sign up.

  • can this work standalone?

    • doesn't the Unifi line require the Unifi controller to configure? AFAIK there's no standalone config. I've never had a Unifi product though, so best to wait for others to respond.

    • +2

Yes it can work standalone with the APP for setup.

    • Sure can, you'll need the Unifi explorer either on your PC or mobile device. You will need a router though :)

    • yes, install the software on your computer to manage it - only need to run it for setup and making changes

  • Did Shallothead just up the pre-discount price by $10?
