AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Processor $499 + Shipping ($0 MEL C&C) @ PC Case Gear

2130

One of the best gaming CPUs around, sensible choice for those already on AM4 platform. Even with shipping it makes sense. I believe this is the cheapest it has been but correct me if I'm wrong. Hope this helps someone 😉

Cheap price but pc case gear is a shell of what it use to be.

Takes so long to get orders even when you choose express

    • +1

I've had the opposite experience for the last 3 orders, what have you bought recently?

    • Have they become worse with general customer service too?

      • Is that even possible?

      • +2

Contacted them recently by phone, no issues, however emailed them a couple of times with no answer hence opting for a call instead, i dont know how they were before but not replying to emails is a pretty bad image for a store.

    • +7

They gave me a tiny pack of gummy bears when I ordered 2 x ryzen 5 5600s. I'd say they're still alright.

      • +1

Not really what you want to judge a store on lol.

They used to be really good with emails and prices, they'd have lots of competitions on their social media (I won one once).

I've only ever had to RMA one thing and that was too long ago to comment. But based on what I've seen they're good, just not as good.

    • +1

Order on the 7th Nov 1130PM, got tracking info on the 9th Nov 5PM. Receive my goods on the 11th Nov via StarTrack with a pack of gummy bears which was devoured by my sugar deprived kids in seconds. Pretty good service imho.

    • +1

Agree, also they don't answer emails and their phone number is hidden, and then they don't answer when calling (recent experience this week).

  • +1

    Done. Just bought one.

  • +5

This should be going down in price to around $450 sooner or later.

    • +5

Try $399… the 13600K walks all over this for value.

      • +2

For gaming they're pretty close, this can be used with a cheap B550 board though. Best value for people with older Ryzen CPUs

        • +8

The 5600 has been as cheap as $175, if you are already on a budget what reason would you have to upgrade to the 3D for an extra $325?

          • +2

@Jazza2400: It’s still a ridiculous asking price for a gaming focussed cpu. Even the 7600 is sub $500 now adays. 🤷‍♂️

      • +7

For new build, sure, but if you already have an AM4 mobo with a 3000 series or earlier, this is a great budget upgrade

        • -2

Yes, but they're not in a position to hold that over people to this extent given the price of DDR5 and 12th gen motherboards.

          • +10

@jasswolf: That's a weird take. These are 2 different scenarios. Ppl who already have an am4 board and are looking to keep it running for a few more years vs ppl who are doing a complete upgrade and buying a new mobo and CPU.

            They're not comparable.

I don't think AMD is 'holding' anything over anyone. It's actually amazing they'd release such a strong gaming cpu for an EOL chipset. It should be applauded imo. Especially with intel changing chipsets every 2 yrs and blowing power and effiency completely out the window.

            • -7

@Sxio: It's not a weird take: new systems are most of the market, hence why they have to market it as a 'drop-in' upgrade, and why they had to update older boards after previously holding back said upgrade.

The whole reason for the release is run-off for Milan-X.

              • +3

@jasswolf: And here's me upgrading my cpu keeping my am4 board. Like everyone else in the market for this CPU. But believe what you want because of your understanding of 'the market'

                  • +3

@jasswolf: Wtf are you on about? Stymies opportunities in the used market? A bigger picture than AM4 users??? How is offering a great cpu for an older platform a bad thing?

The more perfectly good mobos we can keep going and keep out of landfill and e-waste centers the better.

You obviously have your own very specific perspective on this but it makes no sense to me.

                    • +1

@Sxio: It's not a bad thing, and less e-waste is great, it's just not this huge lure at this price.

It serves only existing AM4 users who have games or applications that see benefit so unless the price continues to drop, that's an increasingly narrow group given we're 3 months away from the 7800X3D.

Even for most AM4 users, cache stacking is not worth a $150 premium over the 5700X, nor does it hold value against a 14-core competitor that also has a cache bump.

                      • +3

@jasswolf: Well it was for me. I get to enjoy upgrading my computer without having to do a complete build. I get to enjoy running benchmarks and seeing games get an extra 10 fps. And I get more years out of a good system that has served me well.

So yes. It was a good lure for me and I'm really glad they developed this product.

AND it only cost me $250 after selling my 5600x for $250 which I'm totally satisfied with. That's the cheapest upgrade I've ever done.

No offence but you seem to think like an engineer. You don't seem to understand psychology at all. Ppl don't just upgrade for x amount of performance increase. They do it for fun as well. Because it feels good to get more out of existing equipment. Cos you get a new shiny to play with. For those ppl it doesn't matter if it's 'worth it'. The pursuit is half the fun. And that's also why this is a good product that I hope is selling really well for them.

                        • -2

                          @Sxio:

No offence but you seem to think like an engineer. You don't seem to understand psychology at all.

I think like an economist, so believe me when I say I'm tapped into both. Information asymmetry is an issue here. It's a great product, but they need to make it more affordable, which they probably have done if people stop buying for a few weeks.

I'm all for being an enthusiast, and an early adopter, just do it on the right terms. If all you do is CPU/GPU upgrades and don't refine the other elements of your audio/visual and peripheral experience, you're really not much different from most consumers, arguably less discerning.

                      • @jasswolf: Wouldn't AM4 users currently be like 90% of AMD owners?

                        • @Scrobo: Desktop AM4? No, not even close. From the desktop AMD crowd though? Unclear, and even then you're talking about a crowd of people who largely never drift beyond getting a 6-core CPU, because most of them still don't game on the platform, let alone at the enthusiast/competitive level.

                      • @jasswolf: It's the best upgrade you can get for an AM4 system, and it gets you competitive results to the top of the market, in gaming, without needing to also blow hundreds more dollars on new RAM and a new motherboard.

I can't buy 64GB of DDR5 and a new AM5 motherboard and a new processor for $500, let alone one that will actually beat just dropping this into my system. Even if I go Intel and keep my DDR4, I can't get a better processor and motherboard combo at that price.

It might not be a great lure for you, but it's the best upgrade available for gaming for AM4 owners, without spending a serious amount more.

                        • @[Deactivated]: As of right now, you're paying a $220 premium compared to the 5700X, where you'll only see a relative improvement in some games. Between that - and the Ryzen 7000X3D series set to be announced at CES and launch in the same month - I'm struggling to see the value proposition for most people on AM4, who are not running a GPU fast enough to require the extra overhead.

You're in a slightly more practical basket given your RAM requirements, but you remain amongst a group that is full of people who are not examing their use case appropriately compared to available options.

                          • @jasswolf:

As of right now, you're paying a $220 premium compared to the 5700X, where you'll only see a relative improvement in some games.

Sure, but there is an improvement, a marked one in some games and less so in others. The 5800x3d remains the best gaming chip I'm going to be able to put in that machine without a more complete system upgrade. Does it give 40% better performance than the 5700x for the 40% price increase? No. But it might eke out the useful life of the machine for 40% longer if it remains vaguely competitive for longer than the 5700X, which is likely.

the Ryzen 7000X3D series set to be announced at CES

Yep, but they will require a new motherboard, new RAM and the processor, for a machine that's currently on AM4 we're likely talking about well over $1k even for 32GB, unless there's a precipitous drop in DDR5 and x670 board prices.

I'm struggling to see the value proposition for most people on AM4

Unless theres a faster intel+board combo or a faster AM5+RAM+board combo at under $500 all-in, I'm not sure I can see the objection.

                            Maybe I'm missing something.

        • +1

5800X3D that is $500 on sale is a budget upgrade?

          • -3

@Robbo89: Compared to a new mobo and cpu, or new mobo, cpu and ram?

I think so. Don't forget to minus what you get for selling your old cpu also.

It's also a pretty high tier item, we're not talking about celerons here.

If you know of a cheaper upgrade I'd love to hear it?

            • @Sxio: A 5600 is a cheaper upgrade. Going straight to a 5800X3D isn't remotely a budget upgrade and also doesn't make sense unless you're running a 3090 or better.

    • -4

where all the simps saying $549 was the bottom limit at now… won't someone think of AMD's profits!

  • +1

Do these run as hot as the 5800x?

    • -1

hotter actually, but less power draw

      • +9

That's not how the laws of thermodynamics work.

        • Maybe you should look at the thermodynamics of insulation. Adding vcache on top of the die makes the core run hotter. The 5800x3d is binned and underclocked compared to the 5800x, this attempts to offset the inability to cool it as effectively.

          • -2

@goig986: Insulation is completely irrelevant to power consumption.

You are conflating temperature with wattage, incorrectly.

            • @[Deactivated]: Correct Insulation has nothing to do with power consumption, where did I say that? This CPU has a high core temperature due to the insulating and heat generating vcache die between the cores and the cooling solution. Even though the net power consumption is lower the core temperature is higher than that of a 5800x. What don't you understand?

    • +6

Shouldn't worry about how "hot" it runs as long as you don't disable anything wild it will stay within the limits AMD considers safe. More important for your consideration is how much watts of energy it's putting out that you need to cool . That gets a little tricky to determine when they change how they are calculating their tdp or tbp.

      • +4

I have the CPU set up so it is in constant contact with my forehead while gaming. Please advise if this CPU runs too hot.

        • +2

What's the thermal conductivity of your forehead and surface area of your head?

          • +6

@Noppy: Basically an aio, the human body comes with the liquid and pump already included!

      • I don't really understand this advice, maybe there is some nuance i'm not getting.

Shouldn't worry about how "hot" it runs

important … how much watts of energy it's putting out

These two things are basically the same.

        • +1

Think of it this way a laptop could can run at 90c and probably uses 55w. Compared to a 4090 running at 90c pulling 600w. Both are 90c which some people think is hot but are going to need different cooling solutions. *I have no idea how much power a laptop cpu uses its a guestimate.

        • Actually if you learn basic physics there is a difference between temperature, heat and wattage.

High wattage are good when you need to turn electricity in heat quickly. So a 300-450W TDP GPU, or even CPU recently, running at a temperature over 90c will heat up your room much more quickly than a 15-105W TDP equivalent running at 90c. The temperature maybe 90c but they are not consuming as much power and generating heat as quickly as something that is higher wattage.

For example the Apple M1 Max temperature can reach a 100 degrees Celsius without thermal throttling, but it's package power is only around 34W.

          • +4

@shellshocked: Wattage and heat are correlated, the other variable is how quickly that heat is dissipated.

You originally said it doesn't matter how "hot" it runs. You're obviously trying to express some point about effective cooling but not elucidating your ideas, and whatever point youre making doesn't appear to address the OP's question.

Actually if you learn basic physics

            This is peak dunning-kruger

  • good price, thinking about cancelling my ebay order at 559

  • +1

    This or intell i5 13600k ?

    • +2

13600K if you also need it for productivity purposes.

If only gaming, whatever is cheaper for you really.

      • +5

Thats what i thought.. its my first ever build. Will be 50/50 gaming / video editing. Think i will lock in 13600k.

        • +1

Definitely the right choice then. Good luck with the first build, mate.

      • +1

13600K or KF? Even if I always intend to use it with a GPU, is it worth getting the K variant?

        • +3

KF if you have maybe an old graphics card just for troubleshooting purposes. May be unlucky and your main graphics card shits itself and you got nothing to push out the display.

Really up to you. No performance difference otherwise.

    • +6

New build, you're better off going with DDR5 13600K.
If you're upgrading or bringing over old ram, 5800X3D is good.

Considering you do 50/50 gaming/work, then 13700K isn't a bad choice if you can get a decent deal.

      • +1

Thanks for the advice.. im new to a lot of this. Trying my best to build for around 2k so the ddr5 is just a bit out of reach. So many little updgrades i add and price just starts to blow out. Hoping this weekend i can get some good savings.

      • Isn't one of the benefits of going 13600K is that you don't have to shell out for DDR5 though?

        • Yeah mate.. was replying to afar85 comment where he said to go the 13600k with ddr5. I plan to do the 13600k with ddr4 to save a few bucks.

          • +1

@Piper83: yep I was replying to afar85 as well

        • +1

A bit of a double edged sword leaving a bit of performance on the table.
But you'd be right having that option though.

  • +5

Been waiting for a 500 and under deal. Pulled the trigger. Click and Collect.

    • Are they back to doing C&C?

      • +3

I just checked as I couldn't quite believe it myself, but thank goodness, they have finally brought back click and collect!

        • +1

Yep, long long long overdue. I was shocked to see it

  • +1

is this a sale price, or new standard price

Answered my own question by opening my eyes

    • +6

It's a sale price, this is going to sell out its the lowest ever posted for this chip.

  • $15 shipping to metro Melbourne

  • Eh if this was Amazon i'd buy

    • im hoping amazon list it for this price too. their customer service is just too good.

    • Amazon doesn’t participate free game “uncharted “. Not sure here though.

  • +4

    Cmon 5700x!

    • I doubt the $270 plus post deal from two weeks ago will be beaten but hopefully Im wrong.

  • currently have a setup with a 3070x and 2070 super, any advice on whether to snag this now or wait for black friday/cyber monday gpu sales?

    • I reckon if you're in the market for a 5800x3d then go for it.

    • +1

Exact same setup here, been throwing up this vs the 5900x (for rendering and multi tasking, might be better in long term for next 2-3 years and still performs well in games) and also upgrading to 6900/6950XT depending on prices.

I'd say, If you're purely in it for gaming, pull the trigger on this now, it'll sell out quick and I'm surprised it ended up dropping to $500 given how well it's sold. Even if you dont upgrade GPU straight away, you're setting up for when you do and you'll still see slight improvements now. The 1% low improvements are great for some games.

Outside gaming, the 5700x or 5900x are better options depending on your use case.

  • +1

I hear these also have significantly better 1% lows. Does that just benefit the same CPU limited games, or does that particular factor benefit games in general that aren't necessarily CPU focused?

    • +1

Both, by reports. A lot of lower tier cpu people reported that perceived microstuttering vanishes.

  • +1

Whats a decent board to go with a 13600K?

    • Ive decided on msi pro z790 mate

      • Is it better to get the wifi version since it has ddr5 support?

  • This may included free game “uncharted “

  • this or i7-13700?

    • +2

It's not really a fair comparison. If you already have an am4 platform that can take this CPU, then this is a no brainier for $500.

If on the other hand you are looking at a new platform entirely (am5 or 13th gen), then this CPU shouldn't be in the equation and you'd be better off with zen4 or 13th gen.

  • +8

PCCG removing the shipping tax by reinstating click and collect is their biggest deal this year

    Suspended since March 2020

And for those placing C&C orders, note

Store pick up orders can only be held for 24hrs

    • fantastic news!!

    • +1

Since they stopped C&C I have shopped elsewhere. I might put them back on my look at list. However, since I just upgraded its going to be a while before I open my wallet.

    • Not having CC is limiting your customers reach. There's Scorptec, CPL and Budget PC in the vicinity which I used when I was too poor to pay for postage.

  • +2

Yeah considering it is pretty much the Top gaming CPU for the X570 chipset. It is a great price. Two things will happen in the future. The price will drip to $299.99 or the CPU will go out of stock and they wont make anymore.

    • This is it for the AM4 X3D product line, AMD is clearing stock so they can put the 7600x3d and 7800x3d in production. Shame that I bought my 10 days ago, I didn't think the price would drop this quickly.

      • Same thing happened with me last year so i waited this time for the right opportunity

  • +2

Is it worth it to move from 5900X?

    • +3

      I'm in same situation.
      I don't think it's worth it.
Better off saving for the next big upgrade.
      Maybe Zen5 or 14th gen

      • +1

5900X is worth keeping for sure. I think 5600 and below might be more worthwhile (certainly the older AM4s would be good too).

        • +7

          Honestly, even 5600 is fine.
Unless you are really into specific games (like sim racing) that really make good use of the extra cache, the difference between 5600 and 5800x3D wouldn't justify the upgrade for me.
Keep in mind the differences will be less than it looks in most reviews if you are running 1440p or higher and especially if you are not running best available GPU, i.e 4090 or 3090Ti.

    • In same boat but doubt it is
