Pardon my ignorance (new to the xbox scene) but how cheap is this in the context of other xbox live subscription bargains? Sorry I've just seen so many that I haven't kept up.

Amazon had 12 months for $36 a few months ago (you needed to put in a fake US address) but apart from that this is the best price. It costs $80 in some Aussie gaming stores (I doubt they sell too many though!)
Went for the plunge and actually bought the key. Collected it immediately after I finished the checkout through the AutoKey process (if you input your mobile number), and now I'm very happy.

No, this is for a single xbox live account.
It can be used towards extending Family Gold subscription indirectly when the member with the Gold subscription is added to the Family Gold membership.

Assuming all your family 4 members/gamertags are already on Family Gold subscription, just remove one of them (let's say gamertag A) from Family Gold subscription. Then redeem the single Gold subscription on the gamertag A.
You can only add back the gamertag A to the Family Gold subscription after 7 days - this is the waiting period before a family member can be added back after removal from Family Gold subscription.
Microsoft will then compute the remaining time to be converted. From my own experience, 12 months Gold subscription becomes 6 months of Family Gold subscription. So it is worthwhile extending Family Gold with individual Gold subscription.
Just be aware that Family Gold can only be extended up to 3 years maximum from initial activation.
I'm not sure if they still require it, but I stopped using these guys a while ago when they started requiring you to send them a scan of some form of id when you paid with a debit/credit card.
Although I will add that they did have good support when I bought from them. I unknowingly purchased a PSN card for another region, and received a full refund without any issue.

I've been paying $1 a month for Gold since the start of the yeah using the $2 for 2 months dashboard offers. Not sure if this works for everyone though.
