  • My hikvision recorder doesn’t work and needs to be replaced. Would the hikvision cameras work with this?

    • It would probably work to some extent, but wouldn't be able to use all the features.

You can definitely buy the Reolink NVR alone (without the 4 x included cameras in this deal) for substantially less. Or a Hikvision one, for that matter.

      • Yeah probably best. I’ve looked online but not so many online dealers

    • Reviews I have seen for this NVR seem to indicate that it will not work or may be difficult to get running with non Reolink cameras.
I would suggest you perhaps find another NVR.

      • Found Reolink's official line on the matter:

It is not recommended to use a third-party camera on Reolink NVR since there may be compatibility problems, and it is difficult for us to troubleshoot on the third-party camera. We recommend you to use Reolink Cameras on Reolink NVR.

After considering compatibility issues, if you still want to use 3rd party cameras with Reolink NVRs, you could choose cameras that support ONVIF and RTSP protocols.

  • Can anyone tell me how this compares to a Hikvision Dark Fighter or ColorVu?

    • +3

If you're after cameras with an emphasis on low-light performance, Reolink is not the brand for you. Every comparison I've seen says that they are better than cameras three times the price in daytime performance, but are no better than average at night.

    • I have this model but cameras without the AI cameras (car/person detection).

In the daytime the picture is fantastic, really clear and able to get licence plate numbers. However night time viewing of moving objects is blurred and has a ghosting effect.

  • +2

The cameras in description are 820D but in actual link are 800 D.

    • +1

The cameras are 820D. The NVR system is RLK8-800D4

      • +1

RLK8-820D4-A is the code for the NVR with 4 x RLC-820 cameras. This looks like the older 800 cameras. Spec sheet PDF attached says it's the D800.

        800 are only 20fps. 820 and 822 (3x zoom) are 25.

        • Can confirm from today's delivery that these are the D800 cameras

          • @xor: Thanks for the update. I am still waiting for mine. Contacted Reolink - it was a typo, they revised the item model # in Amazon.
However, their Amazon store still linking the RLK8-820D4-A to this one https://www.amazon.com.au/stores/page/851C0F9B-1E1A-4960-9A9…
Not sure whether to keep it or return it. The only difference is in the mainstream frame rate.

            • @enayet: what is the difference and is it worth the extra cost?

              • @pinkybrain: The RLK8-820D4 cameras are a relatively newer model compared to RLK8-800D4. The major differences between the two models are mainstream frame rate and pet detection. Depending on your need and wait time for a new deal to appear - you could select the current model. But, if time is not a factor, from the price point of view, the RLK8-820D4 model occasionally comes to the same price as the current.

  • Hi friends, I am looking for 4 or 6 camera system for my house. Can anyone suggest a good camera system out of wired or wireless option? I am interested in eufy S330 4 camera system and buy additional 1 add-on camera if needed. Its going on special at goodguys but then I read that if I am spending around 2k on wirless system then probably I should go for wired system because its more reliable and it will also cost material+sparky installation (arond $850-$1000), total around $2k to $2.5k.

So for wired one, which system model should I go out of Reolink, Hikvision, Dahua, UnV? there are so many options and its very confusing to choose one. Thanks in advance for your help!

This Reolink is a great system & this is pretty much the cheapest it gets. I own this exact system & it’s excellent.

I’ve had zero faults with it, though the mobile app is a little average to navigate at first. I cannot fault the system as a whole. It’s also worth noting that Reolink systems work fully offline too, IE no internet required - not all are like that annoyingly.

The NVR that comes with this can expand up to 8 wired camera units. Depending on the cameras you need, they can range from $60 to $500, but I believe these 820A’s are ~$100 each? Reolink a website puts them at $82 today.

Wireless cameras are okay, but you have to be able to power them - battery (yuck) or solar. And from
What I’ve read (I don’t own any) they usually output lower quality or lower frame rate due to wireless.

Watch some YouTube reviews on camera systems - ‘The Hookup’ is a great resource here:
      https://youtube.com/@TheHookUp
      There’s obviously others too.

They have some great videos comparing Reolink to other brands, and depending on your requirements, Reolink usually comes out on top.

Now stop watching YouTube and go buy this setup, you won’t be disappointed.

      • Thank you my friend for this insight. Really appreciate it!

        • @toyapple9 no worries, if you have any further questions, tag me here & ask away :)

          • @theSav: @theSav did you install the cameras as a wired connection? Is it easy to do? I have a tiled roof. I assume I would have the recording box in the study as an example and then have to run individual ethernet cable to each camera.

            • +2

@rodpolky: These cameras require a wired connection. They don't have any wireless capability.

A single ethernet cable is required from the NVR to each camera. I believe 4 x 18m ethernet cables are included in the package, with terminated RJ45 plugs at both ends so you can just plug them in. The ethernet cable carries both data for the video signals, and power to the cameras from the NVR.

If you need a cable route that is longer than 18m, you can just buy standard ethernet cables from Amazon or Bunnings.

The wiring route itself is the hardest part - depending on where you want to install the NVR and cameras. The NVR would normally be located in a central location next to your router, where it can be plugged in with a short ethernet cable (supplied). Generally, the cameras can just be fixed to walls or eaves and just screw into place. It only takes 5-10 minutes per camera.

Feeding cables through wall cavities can be difficult, and is best avoided unless you have the tools and experience. As an alternative, it's relatively easy to pop a small hole in the ceiling (interior) or eaves (exterior) and use plastic ducting to run cables outside of the wall if you're okay with the way it looks.

              • @klaw81: This is the way

                • @theSav: It appears that the cameras included with the above link are RLK8-800D4-A instead of RLK8-820D4-A.
Not sure whether to keep it or return. Do you any opinion about the RLK8-800D4-A camera?
                  Thanks

                  • +1

                    @enayet: @enayet I believe the 800:
                    - Is an older camera (doesn’t appear under the ‘current’ products section of Reolinks website.
                    - A turret, not a dime camera
                    - From what I can tell, seems to come in two varieties - one with and one without person/vehicle detection.
I don’t own any 800 cameras, so I’m unfamiliar with them.

                    The 820A:
                    - Current hardware
                    - Has Person/Vehicle Detection
                    - Dome

The listing SHOWS the dome camera, but yes, the part # lists the old turret…. I’d contact the seller. This deal will hang around for a while & if you do happen to miss it, it’ll come back around April at the latest I reckon (as it did last year for me!)

                    • @theSav: I received my unit, I can confirm the cameras are 800. I tested, and they don't have person and vehicle detection, only motion detection. quite disappointed. will return it.

                      • @Albert10: Thanks for the update. I will also return. However, in the specification it is written 'Person detection/vehicle detection/motion detection' but no pet detection.

                      • +1

                        @Albert10: @Albert10 @enayet
Oh noo… That’s a huge bummer. Seems like the seller used the wrong image & lots of us (me included) didn’t read thoroughly enough..

I’m sorry that happened to you…

The kit with the 820A goes on special every now and then too - check on AliExpress too. You’ll pick one up for the same price :)

                    • @theSav: Thanks. I downloaded the original specification of the camera from the Reolink website https://reolink.com/au/product/rlk8-820d4-a/#specifications. It indicates the camera has 'Person detection/vehicle detection/motion detection' but as @Albert10 mentioned it is not working.

                      • @enayet: Have you tried to update the firmware on the NVR and camera?

                        • @Saiya: I have not yet received the item.

                      • +1

@enayet: Yes, I double-checked on their website as well, it clearly says it does have person and vehicle detection, quite confusing. I just can't get it working. I bought an extra camera of 811A, I can get that working easily, it shows a person icon if there's a person, otherwise, it will show a motion icon only. but with 800d, it only displays the motion icon regardless. I contacted the support, but they haven't got back to me yet, I will return it if they don't have person and vehicle detections. will keep your guys posted.

                        • +1

@Albert10: just let you guys know, I got it working. not sure what happened, might be because I was testing inside the house, and the images were too close for 800d or something. I put the camera outside, and it works, detecting person and vehicle pretty well, but not as sensitive as 811a though. So I decided to keep them now.

                          • @Albert10: Great to hear. Mine is not yet delivered. It is missing then only pet detection (Beta).

              • @klaw81: Thanks for that. Yes the cable run is not a fun job I have done this for x 2 TV's already I should have done the camera's then. Oh well a good job for the Christmas holidays coming up.

      • Hi, do you get any jerky motion on your reolink camera's when looking at live view?

        • +1

Not from the cameras no. They’re wired directly to the NVR via Ethernet, so interference is virtually eliminated.

Any jank I’ve seen has been due to low wifi signal on the iPhone I’m watching on - which is not the fault of the Reolink & is very infrequent.

      • Thank you

      • +1

100% on the offline functionality still works!

  • Similar pricing to AE deals but the convenience of Amazon. Nice.

  • Overall, is eufy the better brand (ignoring the sync issue)?

    • Eufy had a breach before where randomly you would log in the app and see someone elses cameras, they stuck their head in the sand with that and have almost been silent on the whole thing, ive got the door alarm stuff setup but not the cameras

Reolink has free cloud connection for 1 device, not sure of Eufy.

  • @toyapple9
ive reviewed alot and reolink is no. 1 for me.
based on, ease of use / setup
    customer support
    quality of cameras
    price / value

wired / wireless is different use cases
    wired = 24/7 recording
wireless = recording by motion only

most systems have their faults such as wireless generally takes a few moments to kick in for any action, whereas wired is usually faster

DM me for more info i just installed myself 4 wired cameras and 2 wireless (all reolink) can tell you about it in more detail

    • In the reolink app can you filter through person/motion only and watch the footage like on google nest cameras?

      • yes, it saves like 30 seconds (customisable) per trigger event

    • can i please dm you i need some help as to what to get! thanks

      • for sure, happy to help
ive recently wired up a reolink 4 channel kit in my tiled house.
as a beginner i can help you to avoid drilling 4 holes in your eaves to find the right spot haha… 🤣

I've had this system for over a year now and have no complaints. The cameras present great clarity in both day and night situations although can overexpose in some situations. The alerting is good and is accurate in detecting people and vehicles - I can't say I've received many false alerts. For the money, I don't think I've come across a better system. Here's an example of a car pulling into my driveway at night. https://streamable.com/2dfvm1

  • Can anyone school me on what cable to run for these? Will any Cat5 cable work or are there special types for POE cameras?

    • Just ethernet, same as any other network device. I ran CAT6A because that’s what I had on me. But CAT5E will be fine.

      • Does it come with the cables? Or are we supposed to get the cables on our own?

        • It comes with cables but from what I've read, they are of poor quality (likely CCA). I didn't bother using them myself as I was able to get a few rolls of CAT6a cheap enough to avoid any future issues.

        • Ive used the supplied cables with no issues, am installing a super long cable this weekend and bought just the cat5e 30m from Amazon

  • could someone please explain the difference in camera with this one:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08ML9P6HJ/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0…

    many thanks.

    • +2

My understanding is they are the same camera's (both use 1/2.49" CMOS sensor, H.265, H:87' V:44', Audio recording..etc)

The only real difference is mounting style… one is a Bullet camera and the other is a Dome. (I believe they use B & D in the model numbers to distinguish bullet and dome)

    • +1

      @Albert10
Those are the older model B800 cameras As listed on the Reolink spec page:
      https://m.reolink.com/au/product/rlk8-800b4/#specifications

They DO NOT include person/vehicle detection & I’m sure some other features too.
Don’t buy these for the same price, they’re inferior.

If you want the bullet style cameras instead of the RLK-820A dome cameras, go with the RLK-810A or the RLK-811A cameras. I believe the 810A is the equivalent of the 820A but in a bullet style. The 811A has zoom I think? And the 812A has spotlights (I think?). There’s also equivalent higher 82xA series dome cameras & kits too.

For what it’s worth, I picked the 820A domes over the 811A bullets because they’re slightly smaller, and read a bunch of people on reddit saying that the bullet style cameras attract spiders etc much more often cos they have the small lip over the front of the lens where spiders build webs & needed cleaning MUCH more often.

Here’s the 810A kit via Reolink direct:
      rlk8-810b4-a
      https://m.reolink.com/au/product/rlk8-810b4-a/
I can’t find this kit on Amazon, but Reolink has it on sale for 20% off ($110 more than the 820A kit, so not sure why you’d bother tbh), you might have luck on AliExpress too. That’s where I bought mine from.

      • Hi thesave, I am thinking of buying RLK8-811B4-A kit through Reolink (its not available on amazon) because it has 5X Optical Zoom,Color Night Vision, spotlight & siren and two way talk. Is it a good buy? and is it better than RLK8-810B4-A or RLK8-820D4-A kit? and I need 5 or 6 cameras so probably will have to buy additional cameras as well

        • The quality of the 811 is the same as the other 800-series cameras - they’re all 4K cameras with varying features. And yes, you can add up to 8 total wired cameras with this NVR. You can also buy a 16-port NVR if required.

Look at some YouTube reviews of the RLK-811A before you buy to make sure it works the way you expect.
          This is a good start:
          https://youtu.be/L5raQOOxV_Y

Colour might vision is provided by a spotlight on the camera (so don’t upset your neighbours at 3am with false positives), the speaker isn’t great on it either, but I’m not sure any current models from any manufacturer have stellar speakers either..

Im also pretty sure there’s a gotcha with the zoom? But I can’t remember what it is - again watch & read some reviews.

      • thanks for the insight, very helpful!

  • I guess I can plug extra RLC-811A cameras into this kit? fairly sure I can, but just to confirm. Thanks!

    • +1

Yep, the NVR has 8 PoE ports and the kit includes 4 cameras, so you should have 4 ports free for additional cameras.

The RLC-811A cameras appear to have the same PoE requirements and should be a straight plug and play install.

  • I was wondering, self-installation(PoE systems w/ 4 IP cams) is Legal or illegal in Western Australia. Don't have a Sparky or Security camera install Lic. Many thanks in advance. Cheers.

    • poe installations don't involve any electric work, so I would assume it's OK.

      • Thank you for your advice. Cheers.

  • Anyone got the system yet? Mine still says
