what's is 100k CommBank points roughly worth in $.

    • Just under $500 in gift cards.
With $5000k should tick over awards points balance to get the $500 gift card.

  • +1

Finally no fees but that minimum spend though wowzer.

    • It was always like that for that card, $2.5k/month minimum is kind of deal breaker for me.

      • Just personally more used to the 2-3k ones.

      • it's over 3 months, so $1670~ a month, not totally unreasonable but agree still very high

        • +3

Believe he's referring to the minimum spend to avoid the monthly fee. Which is $2500/month.

    • Once-off $30 fee if you choose Qantas points;
    • No monthly fee* ($35) if you spend at least $2,500 on your Ultimate Awards credit card in your statement period
  • +3

but its for all purchases isnt it? including your monthly bills, groceries. shouldnt be hard to h it 2.5k per month

  • So need minimum $5000 spend to achieve the bonus and then they will potentially not pay it out for a period of time which you'd presumably need to maintain the account & make the $2,500 monthly spend or start racking up $35 a month fees.

    • +1

CBA has actually been pretty fast with the cashback at least. About a week after meeting the spending req.

      • Yep agree. They say with 90days but usually it’s a week or so. At worst you wear a $35 fee. Still a good return on investment for me.

  • whats 70k Qantas FF roughly in ticket prices say travel to Dubai ? I can spend that much ( If utilities, groceries and tech) payments and purchases are included. With this inflation its easy.

    • Probably gets you most of or all the way. Europe via Dubai was around 130k per ticket which paid for roughly half the flight once considering taxes.

      • Any idea on if i can get the points converted to krisflyer?

    • +1

No idea about ticket prices but atm it's pretty much impossible to find flights through the middle east (emirates/qatar) for a year out. Also emirates taxes/fees for reward business seats have increased to 1k+ per leg now.

Though typical maths with qantas points is to try to get at least 3-4cents per point of value in terms of equivalent flight costs.

      • Agreed. Also Qatar and Qantas are not exactly seeing eye to eye at the moment so don't hold your breath on Qatar award seats returning any time soon

      • Though typical maths with qantas points is to try to get at least 3-4cents per point of value in terms of equivalent flight costs.

The problem is that you arrange your flight and you work out the 3c per point, and you're going to Europe…

…but you can find the flight to Europe with other airlines like Royal Brunei, Malaysian etc. for half the Qantas cost. Suddenly your 3c per point is only really giving 1.5c of value, because your Qantas flight was twice the price of the other guys. It's a little different now, but before Covid this was the normal scenario.

In practice, this makes it almost impossible to do anywhere near as well as you expect to.

        • Even with routes to europe you still wouldn't be losing as much as half the value wither other airlines; just did a quick search and it still costs $9-10k+ vs 318k points with non-middle eastern airlines. And then it depends on if you care about the business class hardware and amenities (eg was hoping to try out the qsuites but that's looking impossible to do through qantas now). Definitely doesn't help that qantas keeps raising the points costs when it's already not as cheap as other loyalty programs already (eg when I checked routes through virgin/canadian air a lot of them were only about 2/3 the points vs qantas ff).

  • *New card applicants only

      • +1

Assuming the low fee/rate gold cards dont count then?

        • +2

Low fee is separate from awards and they have separate 12 month cool downs

          • +1

@Ibz: Cheers might be worth a punt then.

          • +1

@Ibz: Cheers, was wondering this too

  • Be aware of these conditions below. I was almost pulling the trigger but found out that I can't get the offer because I am currently on a lower tier CBA award card.

^ Offer available on new Ultimate Awards credit cards applied for between 1 Nov 2022 and 28 Feb 2023. • So its not for people with diamond card?

      • Cba has two sets of credit cards. Low fee and awards. Diamond and ultimate fall under awards and share the same 12 month wait.

  • +1

Does BPAY count into $2500 spend?

    • +2

Yep, cleared my spend in one hit with two lots of council rates via bpay.

      • More to the BPAY Transaction, I feel like in the past you wouldn't get Award Points for BPAY transactions. Is this still the case or do you get the rewards? Thanks!

        • Yes, that is the only transactions I used on the card. Got the points.

          • @LeftHandSeat: I read in the commbank terms and conditions "Eligible purchase excludes BPAY payments". May I ask how you are able to use Bpay to earn points / count towards spending criteria for Bonus points? Do u use the Bpay feature on Commbank app or use other Bpay apps such as Beem it?

            • +1

@saxaruk123: May have not been clear enough. I never use the BPAY function in any banking app. Aways use Auspost Post Billpay online, paying via PayPal where possible. Becomes an Auspost / PayPal transaction.

              • @LeftHandSeat: Thanks mate. Do u know if Bpay using Beemit will earn points/count towards spending criteria?

      • whats ya plan for dry months?

  • +1

Yeah not saying this is best churn deal I’ve seen, but if you’ve ridden all the banks around town and locked out until exclusion periods lapse, she’s a potential ride for sure. Commbank dont usually put much out worth churning.

You can redeem points for Coles gift card: $500 gift card = 104,650 points

    Things to be aware of:
    - No monthly fee ($35) if you;
    (i) spend at least $2,500 on your Ultimate Awards credit card in your statement period and
(ii) choose to receive online statements

    • It can take a number of days for purchases to clear from pending so best to reach the $2,500 goal at least a week before the end of the statement period to avoid the monthly fee. YMMV.

    • You can redeem points for cashback. Receive less than gift cards. Also takes up to 10 business days to receive the cash back.

    • Variety of gift cards are limited. Coles, Kmart, Home (with JB - note it is a physical card not digital).

    • "Bonus points will appear on your credit card statement as ‘Bonus Awards’ within 90 days of you meeting the eligibility criteria." I reached the goal in the second month and received the points in the third month. YMMV.

  • +3

FYI no monthly fee for CBA employees

  • +1

Ooof rejected said max I can get is $4k limit.

By what I disclosed I'd have like $4k/month in excess income over expenses.

Guess no more churning for a few months.

    • Guess no more churning for a few months.

      why?

      • +1

Rejections in quick succession may lead to even more rejections as they'll see you're enquiring a lot

  • +3

Churning on this just this month.

Be aware from previous ozbargain post (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12665657/redir) that you need to be => $6000 limit, otherwise turns into a standard rewards card.

  • -2

This has been active for months… Not sure if I'd call it a deal.

  • -2

Get a card with travel insurance first a known good insurance, a known card overseas with an app to control ALL aspects like goe locks, online locks atm locks etc!
before F -ing around with whatever airline!

  • +1

As a tip be careful not to mess up the application part way through. I accidentally hit the back button in my browser and the website stopped working, was unable to continue, unable to start new application as already have a partial account, and phone support can’t do anything as I can’t be identified. Only solution then is to visit a physical branch which I don’t have, and can’t apply for an account until I do.

  • +1

$5000 spend? Wtf. Where'd all the $3000 spend cards go

    • Agreed, I'm looking for $3k spend

  • Is there something obvious that i'm missing stating a minimum income figure?

  • +1

Check the 'for you' page in the commbank - I had a targeted offer for this card but with 90,000 QFF sign on points.

    • Interesting. Do you have a link or a screenshot? Thanks!

  • Minimum Credit is $6000 upto $35,000.

  • Got offered a limit of $1000. Since that would just be the regular awards card without any benefits, guess I'll cancel the application and look elsewhere.

    • Same happened to me

  • +1

Got approved for the cc. When the card came through noticed that the limit was 4.5k.
Apparently if they can't offer you the credit limit then they will just offer you the next best card.
    Be aware.

  • What's the limit with this card?

  • How long did it take for most people to hear back after lodging application? Did they always assess it, or did some receive immediate application approval?

Also did you have to upload payslips during the application or did that come later?

  • How many recent payslips do they require? Will just one suffice or do they need more than one?

    • +1

They need your last two payslips. Currently going through the application now.

  • Anyone know if you get access to a digital card while you wait for the physical card to be sent out?

    • Did you finally get approved?

      • +1

Yes, finally! They didn't even send me an SMS or email to say it was approved. I called them and they told me no need to worry it had been approved on 4/1 and would take 7-10 business days for the card to arrive. I can see the card in the App with $6,000 limit but won't let me do anything in the App until physical card is activated I think.

Consultant did mention they were trying to send the cards out via Express Post for now due to all the public holidays.

  • Typical ridiculous banks. Do the application give them everything they want, says am conditionally approved. Then get an email saying they require even more information… and half of what they are asking for was provided in the original application. So dumb.

    • Annnd now 5 days later they are saying they never received anything. Seems like which ever team does document validation is not very reliable. Bit ironic really.

      • at least you're getting some feedback. I called today to check what the holdup was with my application, only to be told I need to go to the branch as they cannot "verify me over the phone". And thats despite having an account with them for the last two years.

        • +1

They said my application got selected for a random security check hence additional document requirements…. maybe you are getting a similar "random" check..

          • +1

@sidoz: sounds like that random 'bomb' check at the airport that I get every time lol

            • +1

@powerhead: OK now these bumbling clowns are telling me to go into a store. I work in a related field so not completely ignorant of ID validation processes and capabilities… these guys are all over the place.

EDIT: Wow, these clowns have now flagged me and refuse to talk about anything until i go into store because i've been flagged since my netbank login does not work… when i dont even have an account yet. Seriously these muppets might just about be worse than Westpac.

  • I'm changing to this one as my primary card …

  • Can you even setup notifications on this card when a payment is made to it to pay the balance?

  • Can someone who has been though this advise what happens in the last month prior to cancelling:
    1) Are you better off spending $2500 and cancel before the statement - would the points still be credited?
    or
    2) Cancel a few days after the statements for the points to clear, would they charge you pro-rata monthly fee instead of the full $35 for the few days in the new period?

    Thanks would appreciate any help.

    • Never cancel your cards before you receive the bonus points! Most of the cards have in the terms & conditions that any points not yet transferred at the time of canceling are void. Not worth risking the points to save a $35 monthly fee.

      • Good advice, I have been waiting and still waiting… 2 statements now. Was thinking approach to close card after bonus points have been received.

  • Anyone know if it is a requirement to not own another card that earns QFF points with another bank?

    • +1

Don't think that's ever been the case, terms and conditions only ever limits having the same points category card with the same bank/institution itself within a 12 months period.

      • Many thanks

        • +1

Yeah there's been instances where I've managed to hold 2 qantas cards at the same time with different banks due to big bills coinciding, and it wasn't even an issue in terms of card approval since apparently sometimes credit files are slow to update and the bank didn't see the other card application and vice versa.

  • How quickly are ppl getting the bonus points after hitting the $5k? I hit in my first month but didn't get them in my first statement now 6 wks since opening….

    • Do you mean you only got the points for the 5k spend and not the 70k bonus? I was hoping CBA might be one of the faster ones since they paid out the cashback in the other card offer within a week of hitting the minimum spend. Worse case might just have to wait for the 2nd month statement. Not like there are heaps of other decent offers on at the moment lol.

    • I'm still yet to receive bonus points. Received 2nd statement today and surpassed minimum spend earlier this month.

    • Also didn't get the bonus points in the first month after already reaching the minimum spend. Guess it's more like ANZ time frames where you have to wait for the statement a month afterwards urghh.

      • Also for some reason about only half the points shown on the statement actually hit my qantas account for some reason.

        • Because what’s shown in the statement are not actually Qantas points. You have to halve them if I recall.

Or you only earn 0.4 Qantas points per $1 spent

          • @JHoliday: Seems like weird system then since I haven't experienced this before with other cards (this is my first time with CBA). All my previous ones have all shown the correct amount of points on the statement.

  • I got my first statement today. I already met the $5k spend requirement but no points yet

  • Got approved, took 7 business days since application and payslips upload. Commbank certainly is one of the slowest.

    • Are you with CBA before your application? Went to branch for identification yesterday after conditional approval, I hope there's no delay.

This card is perfect for my upcoming holiday overseas.

      • +1

I was yes, but they were not my main transaction/savings account.

  • How long have others waited to receive rewards points?

I met the spend prior to second statement that I got a week ago.

    Hoping points drop shortly.

    • Also wondering this, waiting….
Commbank terms say: "Bonus points will appear on your credit card statement as ‘Bonus Awards’ within 90 days of you meeting the eligibility criteria."

      • I’ve had a commbank rewards card a while ago and it look about 10days from meeting the spend.
So hopefully this one be similar and not 90days!

        • Met the spend ~4 weeks ago, still waiting for bonus points.

  • I got 2 rejections in a row (Nov and Jan), one from Citibank and one from Virgin Money (Virgin Money was because I tried to apply for Citibank back in Nov and there's a 6 months black out period apparently). I am a serial churner, do I wait for a bit before I try to apply for another card. In a dry spell atm but really want more QFF pts.

  • This card isn't bad and would almost rival Citi Premier but for the point earning cap of $10k and annual fee.

  • Is the monthly fee still charged if theres nil transactions in a given month?

  • Clicked on the Get Start button - or something similar to start the application, and it crashed. Log back in (i am an existing customer) and try again but got a message saying they are review my application and i need to wait!!
WTF, I haven't enter anything yet in the application. What a crappy system.
