  • my hesitation was bladed grass trimmer vs the line trimmer with 2x18v. at $99, I'll give this one a go and use the guards carefully 😅

  • +4

This might be fit for purpose if you live in a new build on 400m2 or less, with minimal lawn to edge, and not a lot to blow.

But I suspect that the reason that this set is priced at $100 is because it's not very good….. And not because it's a great deal.

    • +2

      literally my exact situation 😁

I bought this a year ago when we moved. We have synthetic grass laid but the nature strip still needed to be done. I do it every few weeks and this cutter is still going strong. Does a solid job. Battery gets about 25 mins and I have a second one to swap over

      • Good lord. The entire nature strip with the cutter? I had this kit in 2018 and sold off the trimmer cause it was so tedious to do the lawn while keeping the grass length the same.

The blower i still have, very good for the size/weight, and reliable.

        • Don't let it get long.

I don't care for how the nature strip looks. I just keep it short and ensure that the grass doesn't encroach onto the footpath and this does a good job at that. I just do it for fine avoidance.

          • @Cyphar: Fine avoidance..? Who is getting fined for nature strip grass?

            • @jrowls: My suburb. Most councils require they be mowed but few enforce it. I am unlucky to live in the few that do

              • @Cyphar: Jeeeeez that’s pretty bleak. I hope for your sake that it’s a rich council that is active on all fronts, not just lawn maintenance surveillance lmao

      • I got the trimmer skin only a few months back for Mrs. C to use for of the light weight. I’ve used it a couple of times and it does surprisingly well if you keep the head at a constant angle; I find it works best when almost totally flat and not tilted. I agree it’s no good in heavy growth but for some light grass and de-heading capeweed it’s perfect. Get a spare pack of blades while you’re there.

  • I use this blower and works well for a smaller area. I imagine blowing leaves on a larger area will be difficult. Bad reviews for the line trimmer. I have the 36v beast and it works nicely

    • Which 36v? I have the 18 and 36, and find it's barely better at blowing. Terrible for picking up leaves, even in a giant dry stack.
      https://ozito.com.au/products/brushless-blower-vacuum/

Edit: Nevermind, you were talking about the 36v trimmer.

      • I use the 36v vacuum in your link once a week. No issues. Works great at picking up leaves. Maybe yours has an issue

Edit. Sorry. I have this one https://ozito.com.au/products/pxc-2-x-18v-3-in-1-blower-vacu…

        • I've never used one before so I kinda just figured they were crap, one of the few power tools that isn't ready to go electric yet.

Maybe I should return it. I raked a bunch of leaves into a pile, they were pretty dry and crinkly. It just kept getting blocked in the head.

  • I actually like this trimmer well enough for a small yard but I wouldn't recommend this kit.
The blower is garbage and you probably want a 4Ah battery.

    • The blower is garbage

Interesting. I had both Ryobi and Ozito (both 18V) and sold the Ryobi because they performed basically the same. Maybe it's garbage when compared to the 36V one.

I paid $29 for this kit years ago. My Dad still uses the blower, whip/Snip went in the BIN after the initial pack of blades ran out, which was 1 use.

PS: It is only worth the $29

    • the battery and charger is worth more than $29! did yours come with that?

were you using the trimmer as instructed or did you just use it like your regular whipper snipper, you are suppose use the metal guide so the blades don't hit hard surfaces, theres also a spool you can 3d print to convert it to a regular snipper

how is this only worth $29 if the blower is still going strong after years of use

      • pretty sure he just got the skin of the trimmer for $29. it's been posted in here before. blower skin was $59 I think. I highly doubt it would have been the whole kit, including battery, for $29… but i guess anything is possible 🤷🏾‍♂️

        • +1

I got the trimmer kit with battery and charger for 29 a couple years ago, one of my best ozbargain finds.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/575305

I've since picked up the brushless hammer drill, brushless driver kit, circular saw, corner sander, angle grinder, heat gun, inflator and a 4ah battery all discounted

No major complaints with any of them thus far, all for the price of like 2 skins from a competing brand, but only seen light usage however.

@bestcake: in 2022 dollars thats probably closer to $50

            still an amazing deal

my 2022 $99 version just arrived today and did the edges in the backyard, performed well, great kit imho

          • +1

@bestcake: @bestcake i stand corrected my friend 😊 epic find 👏🏾 i feel like i missed the boat of the great Ozito deals of the past 😔

  • I borrowed this trimmer from my friend because I had neglected my garden for many months, but yeah it really doesn't handle a lot.

I believe if you had long grass, it would be fine, but when it's mixed with a lot of weeds, the blade comes off a lot. That said my experience was you can find it and put it back on, but it's just a little pain in the ass.

  • can anyone recommend a good electric line trimmer which is not too expensive. I have this ozito grass trimmer which doesnt have the power I need. I got a 3d printed adapter for it which improved things a bit but that got burnt and the whole thing doesnt work anymore lol.

I know a petrol line trimmer would have a lot more grunt but I prefer an electric one if there is one that folks have had success with…

    • Ryobi One+ 18V 25/30cm Line Trimmer - have one, works well. Best feature is it can be adjusted to edging mode.

  • Curious to know what is the usual price of this kit in store?

    • I've seen it for $119, $115, $99. but yeah, I'd like to know too.

  • +4

The grass trimmer is no good if you're cutting against a fence, bricks, etc. I had to revert to a line trimmer after a few months of frustrating constant blade replacing.

    • +2

Same, I returned mine after two uses as the bit holding the blades flew off. I changed to the Ozito 36V line trimmer:
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-36v-2-x-18v-300mm-cord…

      Much better, lots more power.

      • Has this one ever gone on sale? Been waiting to get one for a while.

        • This one is sort of on sale, there's a $350 pack where you get that, 2 batteries, and 2-3 more attachment heads that may or may not be useful for you.

Having said that, go to Bunnings, and lift this guy up and see if you like it. It has no batteries attached to it, but after 2 batteries, this thing is very uncomfortably heavy to use.

I ended up buying a $120 ryobi line trimmer at bunnings, I honestly think it's pretty well balanced in weight etc, but most importantly how easy i was for the articulation of the head, so it can go from trimming grass to edge trimming.

          • @squaredonut: I've only every seen the skin at $159. So what I meant was has it ever gone lower than that.

Regarding the weight, might be better with smaller batteries then? I've already got two 4 Ah batteries for the mower, might pick a couple of 2 Ah ones with this.

    • +1

you are suppose to use the metal guide so that it doesn't hit hard surfaces!

      • +1

But then you can’t get close enough to the fence or bricks

      • That's a fair point, but the presence of the metal guide reduces its effectiveness when dealing with grass against fences and bricks.

    • Yeah you have to make an effort to not let it run up against hard surfaces.

  • +1

I paid $119 for the set a couple of months ago.
They're great for smaller jobs not requiring my petrol tools because of their light weight.
l'll be using the line streamer hack when the pack of plastic blades is used up

    • i am in the same boat, what is the hack?

      • Cut a length of nylon streamer line, wrap the middle of it around the spindle, use a short length of metal wire to tie the looped line close to the spindle, trim the ends of the line to the circumference of the rubber guard

  • I have an older Ozito blade trimmer that has a hinge that allows you to adjust the blade angle. It's really good and effective. I can be precise enough that I don't chew through the blades. I got a second one that is like this , without the hinge and it is completely useless.

  • was never sure if it was a great deal, since I've seen the skin for the trimmer go for $29 🤦🏾‍♂️ but seems like everything is getting more expensive these days, so the way i see it, I'm getting a battery and charger, with a blower… the trimmer is the bonus 😅 but i think it'll work for me/my needs of just doing edges and using the guards to avoid hitting hard surfaces.

  • +1

Bought a year ago, trimmer is still in the box but blower is in regular use with solid performance to date. Even battery still performs well and I have a traditional sized allotment.

  • +1

    https://www.randseq.org/2021/06/update-line-adapter-for-ozit…

Use this mod to let your trimmer use a line and works better for cheap.

    • Thanks for confirming. NO WAY would I bother doing this every time the line needed changing. I won't be buying this kit.

  • +1

Upvoting for one less idiot noisy leaf blower out there, god help us all please

  • for a small yard, the bladed trimmer is fine. its been 2 years and i finally changed to my second blade last week, after many, many run ins with the fences while trimming. very much surpassed my expectations.
the leave blower isnt good for much more that chasing the cat around though

  • Line trimmers are domestic for the home person who doesn't want to pay money.

brush cutters are what pros use who run cords of 2.7-4mm and decimate empty lots in an hour.
They also help said home user out who buys Ryobi and ozito products because it can't do buffalo or Kikuyu runners.

Line trimmers are around $79. Brush cutters are $950-$1500

    • you know where you're posting this… right? 🤨

  • Have this kit. Would not recommend. The grass trimmer is terrible. If your grass is remotely tall, expect to go through the blades quick. Its not the fact the blade breaks, the part where the blade connects to the trimmer breaks. I have a small backyard and every cut, I will go through at least 2 blades. Last cut, my grass was a bit tall, I went through 4 blades. Its also not a powerful machine either, so expect to go over the same at least 3-5 times. This is because you'll first cut the first 1/3 of the grass, then lower the machine to cut the next 1/3, then lower again as its not powerful enough to just cut at the height you need. If you plan to do any edging/cutting at the edge of a wall/fence/concrete with this machine, don't bother with this machine, the blades will snap very quickly.

However, the blower is pretty great.

    • what size battery are you using btw?

  • +2

Not sure what people are doing with the trimmer to go though so many blades, but I have been really happy with it, I use to to trim all the edges front an back, including against brick garden beds and patio. The blades are so much easier that stuffing around with line feeders that don't work properly

    • Same, have never broken a blade, used 2 or 3 in a year or two from just wearing down

      • Same here. I only have a small patch of grass but can mow it 5 or more times before replacing a worn blade, including edging next to pavers. Compared to stuffing around with line trimmer cord this is the best. I can’t work out why its so polarising haha

  • +1

bought this last year, blade is fine but obiously would wear out, thought too much effort if grass is high so i bought an ozito mower and use the trimmer for the edges only. Blower started out fine, still works now but makes very loud noise, like the fan is shaking in there or something

  • The blower is average, fine for some light work like leaves or grass clippings in a small block but don't expect much. Perfect if you live in a courtyard apartment or a townhouse I reckon. The line trimmer I actually quite like, although it is still definitely for small jobs and the batteries really cop it on both these units, I find it much easier to trim a straight edge with their little plastic blades over the usual trimmer line, have done the same space with both and I can straight line with both but the blades make it way more simple to do along with how light it is, with a 1 or 2ah battery I can use it one handed its that light.

  • +4

The trimmer is better than you'd think. But of course not the right tool for many circumstances, such as extended trimming up against hard surfaces or sharp edges.

I bought the trimmer just for the battery in that 2020 $29 trimmer deal. I actually use it every time I mow and it is very useful. I've never had a blade break, though they will fly off if they catch something in the right way. But even that is very rare. The blades last ages too - I m still on the ones that came with the unit.

Here is a dumb video I made of trimming stuff that should not be trimmed.

    https://youtu.be/LK5G7c8vPcQ

    • Rather amusing video and shows surprisingly well what it is and isn't capable of. I got this particular a few months back and found both to be really light\easy to use and fine for the small things i want to use them for. For any serious work certainly there are a lot better options at higher prices and heavier weights. Probably the best thing about this is they are cheap and light so potentially a great present for someone older or less capable of using something heavy. I know people in their 70's who happily use these

  • For home use look into combi tools. Honda does one so does Stihl. You'll save a fair bit of coin going these as attachments are cheap but are all powered by a 25cc- 30cc+ motor so will be powerful enough to never need a gardener. I actually know a few contractors who use these in their kits. They get ok results!

Change the trimmer head to a ga speedfeed because many people hate line trimmers because the cord snaps and takes ages to replace.

  • Dear All. does this Trimmer and Blower work with 4Ah battery pack?

    • +1

Yeah sure does, considerably better in fact.

    • +1

Yes, in fact it is recommended to use a 4Ah battery with them.

  • Is the head adjustable for edging?

    • No, but the handle is infinitely adjustable and the whole thing is pretty light so you can kind of wield it sideways to edge.
