Bendigo Bank Ready Credit Card

Seems they just released a new credit card to compete with the likes of Latitude 28 Degrees and the Bankwest Zero Platinum, but with lower credit limit requirements and a few more perks.

  • Bendigo Bank support joint credit card holders (one of the few banks that do this)
    https://www.finder.com.au/joint-account-credit-cards

  • 0% Interest for 18 months (then 19.99% P.A with 55 days interest free) Update 8 March 2023: Now 55 days interest free

  • 0% International Fee
  • $0 Yearly Fee
  • $0 Additional Card Holder Fee
  • 90 Days Travel Insurance
  • Extended Warranty on purchases
  • Purchase Protection on purchases
  • $3000 minimum credit limit

Might be good for people looking to go on overseas holidays over the xmas/ new year period and beyond.
Or for those wanting a credit card under a joint name with a partner.

Bendigo Bank is also considered an 'ethical bank' with no investments in fossil fuel's according to Market Force:

      • if you spend more than $20k in a year on ANZ you don't pay the annual fee

        • -1

Much better of churning 5x rewards cards for thousands of dollars than putting $20k on this card for less than $100

    • -1

Rental Vehicle Excess insurance is like $10/day. ($0 excess fee)

$250 or bring it down to $0?

  • Does anyone know what the 28degrees card covers for travel insurance? I just booked a trip to bali this week for january next year. However, it looks like the travel insurance coverage has changed, which I'm pretty annoyed about. Totally regret not knowing about this Bendigo bank card sooner.

    From The 28degrees website:
"There are some criteria that needs to be met to activate the coverage. You'll need to:

Be a Latitude 28° Global Platinum Mastercard customer aged between 18 and 75 years old.
Spend at least $1,000 or more on flights directly with an airline or via a travel agent in a single transaction between 13 December 2021 and 31 July 2022 using your Latitude 28° Global Platinum Mastercard."

    • Bendigo Bank only released the card today.

      • Ah, in that case … if only I waited to book a week later haha!

  • Does anyone know whether the additional cardholder also get the same benefits as the account holder on travel insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty on this card or other similar credit cards?

    • Bendigo Bank allow you to open joint credit card applications.
If it's legally under 2 people's names, then it should cover it.

If it's only under 1 person's name, and you only got an additional card it may not?

Best use online chat on their website and ask.

  • Looks like the ANZ Platinum card policy almost always has higher limits for each section in the international travel insurance policy, usually 25-80% higher for each line item. That coupled with the $250 required spend vs $500 for Bendigo, Australian rental vehicle insurance, and excess-free claims for purchase and extended warranty protection makes it worth the $87/year (after the first year, which is free).

    • You would have to be using it a lot to make it worth $87 when this is free.

For example my last international trip free credit card insurance wasn't suitable anyway.

      • I've never claimed with Allianz but their policies are pretty similar to paid travel insurance, and a friend did have to claim and it was fine. A week's travel insurance for a couple is hundreds of dollars, so if you're doing at least a few weeks of international travel a year you're probably easily ahead, even after adjusting for a potentially lower acceptance rate of claims.

Big thumbs down to posters who are commenting "but what about (aspect of card)" and expecting OP to trawl the T&Cs on their behalf

    • +2

Agreed and OP's been such a good sport about it.

To be fair though, OP really doesn't have to reply lol

  • -5

Call it what it really is; a "debt card".

Credit card deals are like casino games. It might look like you can beat the system, but the house always wins…

The best credit card in my experience is the one you don't apply for, and this is coming from someone who thought they could play the system 20 years ago and failed spectacularly…

    • Well some of the protections for free can save you thousands and gives you peace of mind, but ultimately you're right.

It's better to be so rich that losing things is a drop in the bucket.

Why are there no Visa card, it seems they are all mastercards. I have found that in certain counties they don't accept mastercard altogether and Visa only.

    • I have found that in certain counties they don't accept mastercard altogether and Visa only.

      Where is this?

      • Central Asia like Tajikistan.

    • I had a Visa card for many yearsbut my Bank substituted it with a Master Card a few years ago. I think Visa has more fees attached than Mastercard.

    • +1

      ING still gives a Visa

      • Thanks for that, certainly need a visa for overseas travel, I'll get one with ING.

What's the maximum limit? Can I get $1M limit and put the mortgage on it? 18 months should be about enough time for interest rates to cool down a bit… :)

    • Cash advances not included. It has to be spending, unless you are using a CC to buy a house.

Hope people watched A Current Affair tonight. Bendigo are dogs. Can't block scam transactions but they'll sure as hell block an existing Bendigo customer from opening an Up account. What's worrying is now they have in writing on national TV that it isn't "Bendigo's job to monitor transactions"

  • Couldn't see an option for the joint account?

At what point of the sign up process do you provide the second person's information?

    • +1

Seems joint accounts can't be opened online.
      https://www.finder.com.au/joint-account-credit-cards
"All joint account applications must be opened in a branch."

      • Well that sucks

        • Yes, agree, kills off any idea I had of getting one of these cards.

          • @Wolfy: Why? Additional cardholder suits almost all people.

            • @Vvat: Credit rating and reporting.

Any good for use while you're travelling?

I hate that 28 Degrees sends authorisation messages via SMS to my Aussie #

    • But what makes you feel this would be any different?

      Your options are:

      • Ensuring you travel overseas with an Aussie SIM that supports roaming
      • Changing your phone number with the financial institution to whatever your local number is when travelling (not all financial institutions support this)
      • Leaving your AU number with a mate in Aus and troubling them for the authorisation codes
      • App-based verification, if available
      • Accept that you won't be able to get the authorisation messages
      • App based would be ideal but none seem to offer it for travel cards except debit card providers like Wise.

  • seems like a good option if you don't already have a free bankwest platinum, citibank sig/premier, or amex qantas card.
This Bendigo card is 10-15 years late to market, but still light years ahead of the big banks so Bendigo may have an opportunity to grab plenty of market share if they can cut through.

    • None of those have an interest free period like 18 months do they? So the other aspects may make those a good option but not interest free period?

  • Can you do balance transfers with this card and get the 18 months interest free?

    • That's the whole point

      • Balance transfer is different from 0% on purchases.

  • What is the minimum salary to apply? Full/part time/casual?

    Thank you for sharing this.
We are embarking on a 3 month trip to Europe next year and we need to get a travel credit card with no international fees.
We were going to apply for a latitude card.
    So a question or 2 please…
We’ve paid for most of our trip but there will be $500 still to pay on other stuff like train bookings etc, so that would be acceptable, if it was the minimum spend do you think ?

Biggest question is though, I’m a bit skeptical of free CC travel insurance, has anyone claimed successfully from one, especially with the underwriter being Alliance ( which this one is )?
    Thanks in advance.

    • Not very ethical for an "ethical" bank then…

  • Hi All - i have 28 Degree card from latitude .will it be good idea to get this card and close the 28 degree .
Can someone list pro an cons of these two - compare them side by side and select the winner here ? thank you !!!

    • I might reduce my 28D credit limit to bare $ minimum as a backup, and use BEN Ready as primary travel card.
No issue keeping 28D as there's no annual fee, and depending on your credit standing it wouldn't matter match to your credit score.

  • Any idea what maximum credit limit might apply?

    • Depends more on servicing than an actual limit.

    • +1

      I got $30k approved

      • I commented above. Can you shed any light please?

  • +4

    +1 for OP’s CTRL + F skills haha

  • Given that Citi (now National Australia Bank) has a longstanding Ready Credit product, I wonder whether we'll see a dispute about the name.

  • I might reduce my 28 Degrees credit limit to $1k as a backup, and use BEN Ready as primary travel card.

    • Could just use an UP debit as backup

      • I try to avoid using Debit Card whenever possible. (and I already have ING and UBank DCs)

  • Thanks for this OP! Just applied for this great deal - hopefully card will arrive in time before travelling overseas just before Christmas!

  • Applied because the offer seems good.. But it's been a nightmare dealing with the lending officer.
They kept asking for more documents even though I already satisfied the criteria, and now apparently my application has been withdrawn because I couldn't provide further document straight away..

Other banks kept offering me Platinum cards because I have excellent credit rating so can't believe the hoops they want me to jump through to get $3k limit card

    • Can I ask what further documents they needed? They've only asked for my payslips so far and application still in progress.

      • I gave 2 payslips + bank statement. They asked for income statement from ATO too. Annoying because I added the bank statement by mistake and their platform don't allow you to remove attached files. They're asking for more documents even though the payslips should have been enough

  • +1

Applied and approved already. $30k limit. Apple Pay can use straight away whilst physical cards are mailed.

    • Did you have to upload any docs, or just approved instantly?

      • provisonally approved straight away just had to upload two most recent payslips

        • Cheers. How long did it take for them to reply after you uploaded?

  • I'm interested in getting this card for a trip coming up in January. Just wondering, would applying for this card have an effect on credit card churning? Do other companies have a look at credit card application histories? I currently only have a Westpac Altitude Rewards Platinum Card, but I'm looking at getting the Citibank Premier Credit Card soon as well.

Thanks for the help in advance!

  • I applied on Sunday, got asked for payslips as soon as I submitted the application. They still haven't made a decision, no contact from the bank at all. Anyone else in the same boat?

    • +1

Just dropping by to say Hello Sir 🤗

      • Thanks mate
        Hello back at you!

    • +2

Not sure if this helps but for me:
Applied on Last Thursday (with payslips) (01/12)
Received Email asking for additional docs on Monday (05/12)
Sent through bank statement on Tuesday (06/12)
Approved a few hours later on the same Tuesday (06/12)
      Card posted out today (07/12)

      Processing times not too bad.

      • Thanks for the info. What did they want a bank statement to prove, do you know?

My pay comes in and gets moved around to different accounts at different banks, so there's not much to see.

That's a lot longer than the "usually within a couple of days" they quote on the website.

        • +1

          Honestly, I'm not sure!

I gave them 3 months worth of payslips and they still wanted the bank statement for proof of income.

          • @AzuAzu: Does your payslip look any kind of official ?

Mine are literally just text on a page, I could have just typed it myself.

            • @Nom: My payslips look kinda like an A4 receipt.
Probably just a generic template from payroll software with the company logo added.

    • Same. Sent several payslips and I haven't heard anything. Wasn't expecting a quick turnaround to be fair but yea would be nice to get some communication and timeframe. Thinking of just getting another card since I want something with Travel Insurance soon.

      • Still haven't heard anything. What to expect for "free" I guess. Waste of time.

    • Applied on 01/12
Got asked for additional docs today 07/12 through email with responses within the day
Expecting to hear something back tomorrow.

      • +1

Approved today and card being sent out. So about a week to get the approval.

  • does Bendigo have a loyalty point program?

  • +2

Applied 4/12, got an email on Friday 9/12 asking for:

-Three months bank account statement/ transaction history showing payroll credits; or
-PAYG Payment Summary / Income Statement 'Tax ready'; for 2021-2022- available from mygov or
    -Current employment contract

    I sent Income tax statements

I applied for a car loan a while ago but never ended up accepting the finance, so they just wanted to know if I went ahead with it or not.
They also asked if I had a Zip Pay account and if I did, to send them a recent statement. I sent them one showing $1k credit limit and $0 owing (I only ever use it for eBay promos etc, and pay it off in full).

They said it would be all finalised by COB that day.
Nothing happened, but I got a call this morning and it has now been approved. Got the welcome email and temp password by SMS.

I went looking for a way to add a secondary cardholder, and annoyingly we have to BOTH go to a branch so they can ID us and arrange it.
The welcome email says something about being able to set up mobile payments, but it doesn't look like I can do that until I get the physical card.

They apologised this morning that it has taken so long to approve, they are getting a huge volume of applications (no doubt being OzBargained from this post).

    • +1

I was able to add the virtual card to my Apple Wallet and have started using the card already. Just had to click the Apple Pay link in their welcome email.

Yes, I agree that having to physically visit a branch to add the secondary card holder is annoying - and their branch isn't open on weekends either.

      • Yeah, I just noticed that was there.

"If you have an Apple device you can set up Apple Pay today (even before your card arrives!) through the Bendigo Bank app".

I don't have an Apple device, so will have to wait until the physical card arrives by the look of it.

  • To whoever already applied this card, how was the application process with Bendigo Bank?

    • +1

Pretty smooth and easy from end - no complaints. Applied on 01/12 and approved on 09/12. Just waiting for the physical card now - but able to use the virtual card (Apple pay) for the time being.

  • +1

The website does not allow spaces in first names, which means your electronic identity verification will almost certainly fail.

The real kicker is when that happens, Bendigo tells you to lodge a new application in a branch - i.e. all that information you've filled in is wasted. Not a great first impression!

    • -3

who has a space in their first name?

    • Happened to me. Unsure if it means 2 separate credit checks??

  • +1

I thought it has no international transaction fee but when I received financial information table got this on fee and charges details.

International Transaction Fee – 3% of the Transaction amount (in AUD)
An International Transaction Fee of 3% of the Transaction amount (in AUD) payable for each
Transaction which is conducted in a currency other than Australian dollars (AUD) or in
Australian dollars (AUD) but with or using a merchant, payment processor, financial institution
or other entity (including an online merchant) who is outside of Australia.
Note: It may not always be apparent to you that an online merchant is located outside of
    Australia.

    Need to confirm with them.

    • I sent an email to their lending officer to check this morning, and this is their response:

"There is an error on the info being sent out currently to the ‘Bendigo Ready Credit Card’ customers. Our apology for this inconvenience.

We are currently working on to fix this documents error. There will be no change on international transaction."

      • Cheers for that otherwise I would cancel it then.

  • +1

i closed the ANZ cc a month ago - $15K limit.
Applied for this card with $5K credit and got instant rejection!
Meh, i guess I'll keep using my aging 28 degrees for my overseas trips.

  • Does the travel insurance cover both people on the card?

  • Has anyone claimed insurance due to lost luggage? How do you prove what things you have in your luggage and what it's worth?

  • Anyone who use this, please let me know the following:

    1. $0 internasional transaction fees. Is this including currency conversion fee?
Because 28 Degrees shows $0 international transaction fees and $0 currency conversion fees.

    2. If I deposit more money to this credit card and then withdraw cash overseas, do I get charged as cash advance transaction?
      Example: credit card limit $3000.
I put money/cash to the credit card say $5000.
      Go to overseas.
Withdraw cash from atm with this card say $1000 (or up to $5000).
Do I get charge this transaction as cash advance?

Please let me know especially if you try the above before.

    Thank you

    • Why bother loading it into credit when you can just use a UP debit card?

      • I think my debit card will charge overseas transaction or foreign exchange fee.

        • Just open an UP one / it’s free and no fees. It’s owned by Bendigo anyway

      1. Yes there are no international transaction costs. There are other cards that offer this too, it's not unique.

      2. Yes you will be charged cash advance - it's a credit card.
Although I'm not sure what happens when you have a positive balance on the card 🤷🏼‍♂️

      • +2

Yes you will be charged cash advance - it's a credit card.

The question was about this card specifically, not credit cards in general.

It does not automatically follow that if a cash advance is made from a credit card that a cash advance fee follows. For example, St George Bank credit cards charge no fee in the following circumstance:

For cash advances against credit funds, provided your credit card account has a zero or credit balance immediately after our debiting the cash advance to the account, the minimum fee will apply.

        Source: https://www.stgeorge.com.au/content/dam/stg/downloads/accoun…

The minimum fee was $2.50 but I have noticed that St George has quietly removed references to the minimum fee. In the absence of a stated fee there is no fee.

It has been my experience that cash advance from a St George credit card where the balance is $0 after the cash advance, does not result in a cash advance fee (of any kind).

Although I'm not sure what happens when you have a positive balance on the card

Again, what happens when there is a credit balance was central to the question. What is the point of responding if you are not going to address the specific question?

The answer is easy enough to find. Refer to page 14 under Other Card Fees here https://www.bendigobank.com.au/globalassets/documents/disclo… There is no exemption from cash advance fees for credit balances.
