So expensive, I don't understand why Samsung haven't launched the SmartTag in Australia.

    • +16

I don't understand why Samsung haven't launched the SmartTag in Australia.

I suspect it's due to the mandatory standards for Button and coin batteries we have in Australia.

      • I've seen a lot of stock be returned, relabelled or written off because of this.

        • +1

I had to sticky tape my car fob because my 1 year old at the time could smash it open by dropping it 30cm, 2 button batteries inside.

    • I'm guessing this won't pair with everyone's new Galaxy 4 Smartwatch?

  • +5

FWIW, the extras only work for the high end flagship Samsung models (UWB tracking for AR viewing of where it is). Basically need a Samsung phone with UWB.

For normal tracking, the normal Smarttag has the same functionality.

    • And the normal tracking worked great in my suitcase during my last holidays.

      • Lufthansa banned trackable tags in luggage, and then backtracked, a couple of months ago.

        • air NZ also was talking about something similar. what i don't get is how they were planning on enforcing their ban. people carry all sort of things in their luggage that contain similar batteries

    • +1

Even the normal ones are hard to get hold of, though.

    • I'm stupid. Can you link to the "normal" smart tag please?

  • +1

Don't think these are waterproof - wouldn't think they would work well attached to a dog?

    • +3

Have it for my golden retriever, its been about 6 months and so far so good

      • -1

Clearly your dog just hasn't worked out how to disable or destroy it yet.

I had a remote citronella collar for my dog. She managed to work out how to kill it. Admittedly she had a greater incentive.

    • +2

Quick Google search shows an IP53 rating, so minor water drips and sprays shouldn't do much harm, but I wouldn't leave them in heavy rain or puddles.

      • +1

        or poodles

    • +2

Mine went through the washing machine and had no water inside when i opened it.

      • +8

That's quite normal, washing machines usually empty themselves before you can open them again

    • +3

These are smart tag covers only, not the smart tage itself.

      • Assume that was known. They seem cool, not sure if it's just my experience but the smart tag plus covers all appear to be out of stock anyway?

      • +1

        Was for the comment above

  • +12

The battery life on these plus versions is terrible.

I purchased one in July and am about to go into my 3rd battery. I have the tag attached to my car keys and have not yet used the find function. I occasionally use the button as a back up garage remote. So actual usage is low.

I would recommend the standard version over this where I'm getting 6+ months on the battery.

I have 2 of the original and 1 plus. Attached to car keys and have used the standard in luggage when travelling.

    • +3

Just don't change the battery just because it says it's low.

Mine lasted another 3 months after the "Battery Low" indicator came on

      • +17

Great, but then you risk it becoming useless. One day you'll need to find your keys and it just won't work.

    • how did you get the button to operate your roller door?

      • +6

The tag connects to the Smartthings App. For my garage door i use the Meross opener which is compatible with ST. So i have it set for a long press to open, quick press to close. The Meross units are regularly on sale on Amazon.

        • +2

No way, I just got mine installed yesterday.
Didnt even think of doing this, just had it integrated into my Home Assistant.

          Thanks!

        • +1

I had to disable it as I keep accidentally pressing the smarttag causing my garage to open when I'm not home…

          • +2

@R3XNebular: That's why i had to use the long press for the open and short for close. Had the occasional accidental press when in my pocket after sitting down.

The good thing is the unit beeps, so if it's not expected you can check the door status in the app to confirm its still closed, or close it if accidently opened.

            • @Monoclonal26: Another method is to use the SmartThings app to display the garage door on Android Auto to manually trigger it with the car. But I can understand how it makes sense to have the function with the keys. Rather a suggestion for those who don't take keys out of their pockets for the car i.e. key less entry.

        • Alexa requires a PIN to open the garage w/ the Meross… closing doesn't.

          • @raybies: Same with Google when using voice. However not when using the app itself which is what the Smartthings links to. So no pin required when using the tag button.

    • +4

I bought two of these plus ones. One of them I had an issue with the battery going low fast. Since the firmware update a couple of weeks ago it has been fine.

    • +1

    • I purchased 4 of the plus version in August and I had to change the batteries on all of them within a week or two, however the reason for this was the tags were manufactured over 12 months prior - so the battery's were already pretty old.

I put new batteries in all of them and after checking them all just now they're all showing a little over 3/4 of battery remaining.

    • The none-plus version last much longer.

  • A lot of people say to just buy the non plus version as has better battery life and you dont need the extra tracking features anyway.

    • +1

for non-plus version it will be same as "tile"

  • Have the non plus version and they work flawlessly. Must have if you have a Samsung phone and want tracking.

    • I bought some for a relo with a samsung note 10+

Any idea why they complain it doesn't work half the time? As in it just beeps an error or something when the button is pressed, but won't make the phone ring.

Haven't had time to troubleshoot in person as yet.

      • Maybe not set up properly?
I'm really not too sure sorry.

        • No worries, thanks for your reply anyway.

I find these days some people are too scared to simply say "I don't know", which is itself a valuable response.

      • ? It's a bit unclear from your post, but they're double pressing, right? Once is something you can bind to different things, double is to make the phone ring.

        • How long does it generally take between double-press and phone ringing?

          • @andresampras: Within 5 seconds or so? Haven't really ever timed it.

  • Pretty please someone post/find a deal for the standard model in 4 packs?
Best is around AUD$130 on Amazon.
    Cheers

    • +3

      https://a.co/d/1zAbNHq

Around $75 USD posted so $112 AU.

Change your Amazon store in the App to US.

      • Thanks, I saw that one! Thanks to Jerry, once GST and exchange takes place, it's $130.

        • This is a relatively good deal then considering previous tags were on sale 30-40each?

          • @NfOrCeR: I definitely think so, probably warrants its own post!

      • Thanks, just what I needed! Was only searching on the AU store and there hasn't been many listings. Total $125 with GST, shipping and some $3 exchange rate guarantee fee, but $30ea is a reasonable price!

      • Thanks mate,
just perfect timing for upcoming trip

Quick question for those knowledgeable about tags - I'm bulding an ebike and one of my concerns is theft as they get stolen a lot.

Would this be a suitable way of tracking the bike if it "disappears"? I don't have a Sammie phone - would I need to get one to use this, or is there an online service that can be used in it's place?

    TIA for any advice.

    • +2

From my research you need a Samsung device, same as Apple with the Airtags.
I don't have either, so I went with the Tile Pros (not a great deal atm). Pretty happy with them. Useful for finding keys etc, and have one in the car just in case.
Also used them to track our luggage last month when it went to Melbourne instead of Brisbane from LA.

Note it still relies on a network of tiles connected to the tile app to locate the device, so the bike may still disappear if it's outside of this network.

    • +1

It's better than nothing. The Apple AirTags have the best network. Samsung are second… as far as I know. Someone please correct me on that if I'm wrong.

Eufy are making smart tags now, and they're apparently on Apple's Find My network. Not sure how good they are yet. They're so new, there aren't many reviews. If you don't need one now… and if you don't have a Samsung or iPhone, I'd wait and see how these Eufy ones are like.

EDIT: Just read some reviews here: https://www.amazon.com/eufy-Security-SmartTrack-Bluetooth-Re…
If you're on Android, don't bother with Eufy.

So in summary, get the SmartTag if you have a Samsung. Get the AirTag if you have an iPhone. Get a Tile if you have neither of those.

      • +2

I assumed the Apple AirTags would have the "best network" too, but in my own testing with both side-by-side, the Samsung Smart Tags (I have not tested the +) give more frequent, timely and accurate readings than the Apple AirTags. Interestingly, in the USA, where Apple has over 50% market share, and Apple would therefore have far more devices "in the wild", the Samsung Smart Tags still seem to give better results when actually tested.

If you don't want to trust my testing, others have found similar results.

The Samsung Smart Tags (regular and +) also have additional features such as the ability to "reverse find" the phone by triggering it to ring and can be set up to activate "Smart Things" sequences such as turning on/off lights, opening/closing garage doors, etc.

      • +3

No Samsung is a lot better than Apple in my own testing and several other Australian tests that have been done.

      • +4

Nope. Independent Australian reviews have tested them both and Samsung comes out on top. See

  • +1

So that I read this correctly; even though it is not available from AU store yet; it'll work with Samsung phone sold in AU, right?

    • +2

      Yep mine works fine

      • +1

Thanks; I suspect the way it track lost item is piggy-back Samsung phones around you (similar to AirTag with iPhones around it)?

        • +1

Its opt in for Samsung…. combined with the fact that they aren't released in Australia means I wouldn't be confident others can help you.

          • @samfisher5986:

Its opt in for Samsung…. combined with the fact that they aren't released in Australia means I wouldn't be confident others can help you.

Your lack of confidence is unfounded ;-)

            See below.

I can also vouch for the fact that the Samsung Smart Tags do indeed work in Australia and in my experience give more frequent, timely and accurate readings than the Apple AirTags.

            @BigLeviathan

I suspect the way it track lost item is piggy-back Samsung phones around you (similar to AirTag with iPhones around it)?

            Yes, this is correct.

            • @oz-dave: While the article gives me confidence, I'm not really sure I understand how.

If it was true, the only explanation would be that non smart tag Samsung users are turning the feature on for some other reason.

There simply isn't enough smart tags being sold in Australia and there is an insane amount of air tags sold.

              • +2

@samfisher5986: The issue is that you don't understand the system. It's not "opt in" as such. Samsung users just need to have activated Smart Things Find, which basically anyone who uses a smart peripheral like Samsung ear buds would have done during the pairing process.

So there will be many, many enabled devices in Australia.

                • @wombat81: Thats good to know, all I read was that it was "opt in" not why/how you opt in.

    • +3

      Yep.

This was the Australian article and accompanying video that convinced me to give the Samsung SmartTags a go.

    • Hmm. Thought they released them previously as a preorder bonus.

At anyrate, they work just fine. Bought mine online ages ago. Highly recommend. For the uwb features though you need a phone with uwb. That said you can get by pretty far with just the ringing, usually i just use this and don't bother with the ar stuff.

  • +1

and people say Apple charge high prices. this is the supposed bargain price? Coupled with lower data points (less Samsung users than android users)

  • +2

Just to confirm, it will use other Samsung devices in Australia by default, to find these tags, much like Apple Airtags do?

    • +1

Yes - the trackers continue to have their locations updated via other phones even when they are km's away from you.

    • -4

No, its opt in for Samsung so the network will be non existent as the product isn't released in Australia.

      • Is that confirmed or an assumption?

        • …so the network will be non existent as the product isn't released in Australia.

          Definitely an incorrect assumption!!!

I can vouch from experience with testing both side-by-side that the Samsung Smart Tags (I have not tested the +) give more frequent, timely and accurate readings than the Apple AirTags.

I have the Plus versions which are attached to the shoelaces of my 4 and 7yr Olds. Was useless at the Melbourne show. Crowd was massive and presumably overloaded with interference. Didn't work at all. But for normal shopping centre scenarios I believe the AR feature would be useful for tracking down lost kids.

    • We had trackers on our kids at the show too. A really useful feature is to be notified when the kids' trackers go out of range, so if you're at the show or shops and they wonder off without you realising it, you'll get a notification on your phone/watch.

    • I know the airtags have anti stalking features but does the Samsung tag? Might consider the same and attaching to their bags etc..

  • Great for travelling. Worked well at sydney airport.

    • +2

Might be the first thing in history that's worked well at Sydney airport.

      • I find their parking fees work extremely well….for them.

        • I live not far from Melbourne airport. You need to take a new mortgage out on your home to park there. So Sydney is probably a bargain. 🤣

  • These are great, I've got a couple. Very cost effective when you factor in the time saved for me, but of course it's different for different people. Battery only lasts about 6 months, but i anticipate that's more to do with how often i need to use them. In particular i love the phone finding feature, especially when it helps me find my phone on silent under a beanbag (thanks absent minded kids).

I just wish they were cheap enough for me to throw them on everything.

  • +2

I purchased two plus versions for around 30AUD each and a non plus for around 18AUD from Sri Lanka.

They worked well at the Sydney Airport. If you have a phone with UWB, the plus is worth it.

PS: If you have two phones with UWB, you can also track the other phone just like another Tag+. That was an unexpected yet neat trick for me.

  • Very new to this, but how do these vs Tile vs Apple Airtags compare?

Just looking for something simple and cheap for partner who keeps losing her keys.

Edit: found a forum post and seems airtag is the way to go https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/737741

    • Can't comment on "vs Tile", but see my earlier comment here re "vs Apple"

    • +2

Very generally, nearly as good as Airtags. Much better than Tile.

  • Is this really a deal? I got the non plus one for $30 each a while back, the plus one was like $10 more at the time. I think this is more or less regular price, if not a bit more expensive than normal

    • These are very hard to get most of the time.

  • I have 2 units. They work great. I have one on my dog and one hidden in my car.
Worked great when I couldn't find my car in a car park!
Batteries last around 4-5 months. They take CR2032 which are common and cheap

    • How effective is it on the dog?

      • +1

He's a Whippet and can run fast and hence travel long distance.
Works a treat in the event the escape artist does his thing.

  • +1

Bought one of these before a europe trip recently and it was so handy when my luggage got left in Doha.
On arrival i could show them i knew it was still in Doha, speeding up the process of filing the forms, everyone else had to wait until all the luggage had come through before forming a line.
I could then see when it arrived in country and called the local handlers to arrange delivery.

I've had it about 3 months now and a few trips and battery is still high.
