Evapolar evaSMART Evaporative Personal Air Cooler $199 + Shipping ($0 with First) @ Kogan

85

Also available in white: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/evasmart-usb-personal-air-coole…

I bought one of these from Kogan last week for $229, they're $329 everywhere else but Kogan's taken another $30 off for their Christmas sale. I haven't got it home yet so I can't comment on performance but they seem fairly well reviewed.

If you need an AC that humidifies your room in QLD then you are insane.

before you buy, please watch Technology Connection's video on evaporative coolers

It's just blowing air past a moist pad / paper air filter and at $200 it is a horribly overpriced product — there's only RGB lighting and a nice plastic shell to make it look more technologically advanced than it really is, and ALDI actually sells a generic variant for $29.99 that will do pretty much the same thing.

    • link to the generic variant at ALDI please?

It may not be on sale anymore, but this is what it looked like. However even cheaper ones exist on eBay for as little as $15.

If you prefer not to spend any money, just get yourself some fabric (towel), dunk it in some water and then drape it over a clothing rack and position it downwind of a floor fan or an open window. You'll get roughly the same cooling performance (as long as you keep the towel moist).

        • That cooler requires you to freeze the ice pack in your freezer first and then slip it into the fan to work. It doesn't blow air onto a moist pad

In theory it works, but you'd still need to go through the trouble of freezing the ice pack a couple of hours prior before you can use it.

          • @scrimshaw: omg you are right. I've been living in lies. Ice pack is not even evaporative cooling.

I had one that looked like the eBay stuff and I used to chuck ice into the reservoir. The water feed can be a but dodgy. Any luck on replacing the wet curtain though?

Seems like a huge waste of money, be better off installing a fan near the window

  • This is only good for very close range. Maybe work ok on a working desk for 1 person.

    • Sounds like a correct name for the product then:

      Personal Air Cooler

A friend has one of these and they are laughable.. May as well just get a usb fan for $5 tbh

  • For that price buy yourself a portable AC

  • Had one of these way back when they were on kickstarter. Honestly not worth it at all IMO

  • Reminds me of the portal air conditioners in the movie Congo.

  • Lol got a mini one from Kogan for $9, wouldn’t pay more than $30. It works nicely in dry climates but it’s a slightly boosted normal fan. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/576044

  • I know there are some bad comments on these things but I have had an Evapolar for a few years now, and TBH its been really great. I've tried a lot of personal coolers and there is absolutely no comparison with this and a simple fan. It cools down a TINY space, but it does blow legitimately cold air on you while you're sitting around gaming or in bed with a book. It is overpriced though, agreed.

      correct, expensive KOGAN LANDFILL

A $20 desk fan over a bowl of water will do the same thing, $200 is not a bargain at all lol - especially when these things DO NOT WORK along the coast in Australia as they need low-humid environments to operate efficiently.

  • +4

yeah definitely return that if you can OP, $200 for something like this is basically a scam

  • These work, but not for the function they are sold for. The evaporator is just too small and the fan too slow to provide any meaningful cooling, and in a closed space the humidity is going to build up.

Where these excel is in combination with an AC. The AC pulls moisture out of the air, and this adds just enough moisture back to counteract that. For anyone with sinus problems who gets a stuffy nose in airconditioned rooms, they are a godsend. But I wouldn't get this one. If you need one quick, I saw them at bunnings for less than $20 (not listed on website). If you can wait, ebay has them for $15. Search 'portable usb cooler'

The only SMART person here is the manufacturer raking in the $$$$

  • f'n Kogan, up to his ol' tricks again.

  • Keep in mind this is just a swamp cooler. Do not expect much performance out of this.

Please keep the money in your pocket. You will get better performance with a wet towel placed in front of a fan. Better still, put the wet towel on yourself and sit in front of a fan.

  • Nice! I've been looking for an LED mould creator.

  • Ill save you all the money. Buy a box fan https://www.harveynorman.com.au/dimplex-50cm-box-fan-with-to… place it on your window sill.
If you can close the window so only the box fan has the ability for intake/exhaust. Typically I exhaust to stop intaking dust from outside. Ever since doing it this way my room has never been hot (3monitors and a pc) due to the fact it creates enough of a vacuum that all the hotter air is getting exhausted and replaced by cooler air inside the house.
