how is the ram worth $200

    • +11

There is also CPU upgrade as well from a 6 core to an 8 core 5700u.

      • do note both chips are zen 2 compared to the 5800U (zen3) RTX 3050 Ti model on Amazon which is $1.5k+ though

  • +2

This laptop is gold (in colour). Yucky

  • Bit disappointing the old Swifts were 400 grams lighter

    • +5

1.4kg is still just not a heavy laptop. For me at least (so just personal preference) I'd prefer a larger battery, thicker/stronger hinges and body frame, larger/better speakers, more fuses/vrms/etc, overall just a more 'solid' design. Oh I guess at a reasonable cost too. They could go full titanium - so light and strong - but that wouldn't be sub $1k.

      • Hilarious comment!

This is more or less what my wife said when she married me

      • that fujitsu lifebook is no titanium nor flimsy , it's solidly premium yet lighter than this, but loses out on specs - cpu / gpu

    • The i5 Swift without the dgpu is 200g lighter and much cheaper, if it helps.

  • For a school laptop with some fortnite and roblox on the side?

    • +1

      For sure.

    • All 3 at once on this laptop, it's quite powerful lol

  • +3

got one of these last time for BL and its a good little unit, light, pretty speedy, decent at gaming, for the price its a good deal

  • +2

Had a really bad experience with Acer. Never going back again but the price is tempting!

  • this seems pretty solid if you want both light gaming and portability

  • I wish the ram is upgradable. The 5500u is sufficient, and very affordable. But 8gb ram is barely just enough to do light work, even excel sheet + YouTube tutorial video is enough to max the 8gb ram.

  • +3

Got one on the last sale, worth it. Very light laptop but very powerful

  • Clearly designed for work and game given the compact size, good screen, and fingerprint reader. Probably only downside is the graphic card is a bit outdated - You definitely want a rtx 3050 minimum these days.

    • There is a 3050ti version on Amazon but it's almost $1500 and not local stock.

When the HP Victus 16” 3060 goes for $1100 it’s a no from me

        • +5

But that is an apples and oranges comparison.

The Victus is 15" and weighs 2.4kg. This is an Asus G14 competitor in terms of form factor.

@shellshocked: Well there are some similarities:
            - both are laptops
            - both have dedicated graphics card for gaming
            - both have 300nits 100%srgb screens

            • @MuddyClear: Well if you are trying to focus on that let's look at where the Victus reduces BOM cost in order to accommodate the the Ryzen 5800h and NVIDIA 3060.

              Build materials
              Victus - primarily plastic
              Swift X - primarily metal

              Screen

Based on the review the Acer actually has a brighter screen. Good for it's intended use as a portable laptop.

"The maximum brightness (412 nits) is excellent and higher than that of all its competitors"

              Ports

              Victus supports a maximum 5Gbps.

              Swift X supports a maximum 10Gbps

        • When was this?

        • +1

not sure if serious? You're comparing a 16" laptop with a 14" thats has a smaller shell

Guess theres no difference between a 85" and a 70" tv if we have it your way

People like the smaller form factor and are fine paying more. More work is required to squeeze the components etc.

          • @lltravel: One thing to note is the wattage on these are obviously limited compared to the gaming laptops. I've been eyeing the acer swift x 5800u + rtx 3050 ti for a while sad that it's only available from amazon US at a super bad price, I wish more laptops were like the swift x, for a bit more I'd love a thin and light 14 in with a touchscreen and Ryzen U series chip but with dGPU

Bought this during the Black Friday sale to replace a 5 year old XPS13. So far so good. I appreciate the full size HDMI which the XPS13 didn't have, and seems to cope fine with some moderate photoshop work. Only things that irk me are the relatively chunky power brick, and the fact that the backlight for the keyboard switches back on by default every time you boot up or wake from sleep.

    • +1

Replace the charger with a 65w or 100w type-c, works fine

Quite cheap on Amazon, I got a Zyron Tech 156w charger for $79.99 which works well

  • Is the ram upgradeable?

    • No, it's soldered

  • Can this charge via USB-C port?

    • Refer to the review:

"The laptop comes with two USB type-A ports. Additionally, there is one USB type-C port with both DisplayPort via USB-C and Power Delivery (supports charging the laptop via this port). Combined wiith the HDMI port, the Swift offers two video outputs in total. There is no integrated card reader."

    • Yes, also works fine with charging via docks

  • I bought this one in BF deal and got 10% back in HN voucher (valid in 2 months) so effectively it's 880$. Two things I don't like about it are Acer windows is full of c**p/bloatwares and the trackpad is bit cheap.

    • +3

Download windows 10 installation media and wipe it, you don't need an external USB or anything it goes over the top of itself. You can upgrade back to 11 if you wish after but wouldn't recommend personally

Did this immediately when I got it home

  • Can anyone comment on build quality

    • Metal exterior, feels nice. Keyboard isn't the best I've had but does the job. Mine's in my backpack daily and no issues, does fine thrown around in there with other items

    • Just one down side - the fan intake is above the keyboard, which means there's poor airflow if it's closed.

I often use my laptop closed with a dock so it's quite annoying

  • Sold out in Victoria, tried to buy - awesome deal!
