Stumbled across this on the Microsoft store on eBay and believe its quite a good deal! The Microsoft online store has them selling for $2118 and JB Hi Fi has an inferior model on sale for only $50 less. For only $50 more than the JB deal below, if you have eBay Plus, you get a 15 inch screen vs 13.5 inch, a bump from R5 to R7 processor and storage increase from 256GB to 512GB.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I buy another surface product. Their quality control is garbage.

It seems to be more of a "how long until the product shits the bed" not if.

SP3 screen died outside of warranty. SP4 battery died and needed replacement. Laptop3 screen died in month 13, had to bust Microsoft's chops to get them to cover it under ACCC warranty. Do with what you will with this information.

Forgot to add, dad's also had 2 surface devices die as well, both within 1-2 years.

my team in previous company all of them use sp, I didn't hear anything wrong.

      • -3

        Probably using it very lightly.

        • +5

heavily, we use it as production tool, 8 hours a day for programming.

          • @paddywide: I've had the SP4 for few years and it still works great except when the screen start shacking uncontrollably, would have claimed it under warranty if the Mrs hadn't taken it to China.

Also bought the Surface Laptop 4 from the last deal for $900 and use it for work everyday, 8-9 hours a day and works like a charm. (bought the Ryzen 5,16GB, 256GB)

I think the above is not that much of a deal in comparison, I would say HODL till Xmas as it will drop a bit more.

@itsmoe: Funnily enough, I was in the shower and remember LTT's video about sleep mode updates and that got me thinking that it certainly could have been that battery drain that was affecting those units. It's too late to diagnose now, but that would mean the flaws aren't the units but Windows itself.

              • @phatty: Yeh it's windows but I haven't noticed that issue with my Unit so far. Maybe they fixed it with the newest windows update a couple of days ago.

              • @phatty: I was watching LTT"s video and it all clicked together for me.

I've had battery problems on the Surface Book 2, Surface Pro 4 and Surface 3. They are normally docked overnight, and the battery was probably killed by a combination of sleep mode updates and bad battery management firmware.

                • @Caring: fwiw, it's not limited to surfaces, but entire mobile platforms that didn't have S3 implemented in their firmware that is running windows.

it's totally MS's windows division that stuff this up badly. there used to be regedit/cmd/gui options to address that S0 battery drain issue… but avoiding surfaces doesn't mean you would've picked a laptop that is immune to the issue. if it's running windows, chances are, it has that s0 issue.

Your experience is your experience obviously, but for me, hands down best laptop I've ever used.

Wife has a first gen surface laptop - flawless this whole time. Been using a surface pro 7+ at work for the last year, also been flawless

In fairness to Microsoft, the Surface Pro 4 was released in 2015. There have been 7 years since then for them to improve things, which is a long time in the tech world.

I have a Surface Pro 6 and have never had an issue, aside from wishing it has a USB C port…

tldr; you and family got a total of 5 Surface products all failed, it's really hard to believe how you would've gone buying the 2nd or the 3rd after your first (SP3 here according to you) had died outside warranty. I had SP Pro 1st Gen, and Pro X, never had any problem apart from devices getting slower day by day.

Not bad if you missed the black friday deal for $1448

  • I’ve got a surface laptop 4 for work…and the wifi on this thing is the worst I’ve ever seen…
I have multiple UniFi 6 points and my MacBook and other devices have no issues, yet the surface takes forever to connect after sleep and drops connection too

  • do not like touch and feel of black version, prefer platinum ones - they feel more premium

I got the latest intel (Laptop 5 i7) version of it recently and am pretty happy with everything. The only thing was that I expected more from the battery life (getting around 7hrs of backup vs the expected 17)

This deal seems pretty good, particularly when you consider the Microsoft's 60-day return policy!

    • +1

Rule of thumb is to half the battery life claimed by manufacturers to get a real world value.

Except Apple. Those glorious macbook airs legit give 16 hours of usage.

    • Is the 60 day return no questions asked (as long as its returned in 1 piece)? Might take advantage of that…

      • that was my experience - no questions asked. Refunded promptly as well.

Might be best to double check with their support jus to be on the safe side

    • i7s sucks battery unfortunately.
when it comes to battery life, the best ones i've seen are the laptop 4's ryzens.. outside of that, it's pretty mediocre.

it's very different compared to the thinkpad times where you can carry a spare battery or 2 as a backup.

Err.. is the processor a Ryzen 4xxx? That is 2 gens old at this stage. I was hopign atleast 5xxx

  • Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice soft carry case for these? I bought the 13 inch a month ago and am trying to keep it in great condition.

    • +1

Lenovo often has sales for their Thinkbook soft sleeve carry case for like $15. I think they still might have the deal active atm.

      Decent good quality case.

    • i used to use the macbook ones as they are similiar size, but doesn't fit snug.. so i can put other stuff in it as well.

but i mostly use an incase backpack for my surfaces (w/o the above mentioned case), as i normally have to carry 2 of them plus a full sized keyboard.

    • Incase Woolenex. Feels wonderful!

    • Thanks for the suggestions!

      • This is the one I have. It's perfectly cromulent.

I suspect the Surface Laptop 4 are now going on clearance. The smaller model isn’t even listed on the MS store.

I spoke with MS store chat and they wouldn’t confirm if the Surface Laptop 4 would return and hinted some sales for the Surface Laptop 5 in the coming weeks to keep an eye on.

    • iirc, the laptop 5 is worse off in some ways compared to the ryzen laptop 4s.. so i suppose they are trying to quickly push out the old stock.
