$165 at JB hifi, and it may not even be a "special" there.

Why isn't this getting more positive votes?

    • A week or two ago there was a Buffalo 3tb usb3 going for $150. Maybe that's why. But for those who missed out (like me), is this a good drive and a good price? I'd prefer a standing one like the buffalo was, but I missed the buffalo and I need a new external.

      Just gave it one :P

OK OK I forgot to vote. my bad!

      Not sure if I want a 2nd hand hd…

    • This is not an exceptional price if you've been watching the 3tb usb3 drives…

  • Anyone know which drive is inside these?

    • +3

      ST3000DM001 which is a 7200rpm drive

      • Is taking the hard drive out straight forward ?

        • +1

Use a hammer, as the enclosure is pretty useless.
Just check the youtube for instruction. However, once you take it out it will be broken at the latch.

        • +1

I found it really straightforward. Just use a card to pry open the edges. I would not suggest using a hammer … just to be safe.

With Seagate drives - does taking the drive out of the case break warranty? Thanks

    • +1

      yes it does

If you want a drive to rip out, this WD 3tb USB2.0 at JB Hi Fi may be comparable. $165 inc. free shipping or in store pickup. I don't know anything about the drive inside or what the quality is like.

And its USB 2.0 which compared to USB 3.0 is like watching grass grow.

You have not read his post properly :(

        • -1

Ok. I misunderstood what he wanted. I thought he wanted to replace the drive NOT actually take the drive out and use it. Regarding USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 external drives, there is a substantial difference in speed. I have the same drive with both USB 2.0 and 3.0 and the USB 3.0 is about 2 - 3 times faster.

      • No its not, HDD access restricts the transfer speeds across USB, there is a difference but its not night and day. Go try USB 1, then try USB 2 then you'll see a big difference.

    • +1

but maybe inside are the same (between usb2 and usb3 version). just the enclosure are different
if you will take it out then go for usb2.

wd better than seagate. this ST3000DM001 has clicking sound issue. just google it. and because it comes from external enclosure, you cannot update the firmware.

for ppl with NAS, just get wd internal 3tb $185, then use wdidletool, change the delay time.
      warranty is 3years.

remember, taking drive out void the warranty straight away.

  • Damn I paid $179 at officeworks last month. Then again I guess we could wait forever.

  • Bought one!

  • Deal seems to still be active!

  • comes up as $159 for me?

      plus delivery

Guys, just a word of warning. I bought one of these drives from Amazon when they were doing the deal for $120 earlier this year and I regret the purchase. Just do a search on google and you will see that the seagate expansions suffer from a "click of death" problem. I'm not saying all of them will have it but mine certainly did and when I RMA'd it and got a replacement, the same problem occured!.

Seagate has publicly announced on their forums that the "click of death" has been fixed from drives manufactured later than 2010 but this is an outright lie because if you do a bit of searching, many people are having problems with newer drives such as myself.

3TB is a lot of data to lose if the drive ever fails. Buyer beware.

thats exactly what i said on my post.
futhermore, the updated firmware to (supposedly) fix the issue, CAN NOT be applied to this external type of drives.
youtube this and you can also hear what the sound is. quite scary…

    • I think ill give it a miss after hearing this problem.

    • I completely agree with keyman.

I bought a 2TB Seagate Expansion and the bloody thing clicks like an old 10Gb drive I have from 20 years ago :(.

    • I have no issues with my seagate go flex 3tb its quiet as anything

    • +2

if you don't have more then two copies of a file, you didn't want to keep it.

  • That is the reason why i have bought 2 so that I can mirror it.
