  • Is this worth extra $400 investment compared to the bes870?

Picking one up tomorrow but tempted to get the dual boiler. Seems to be highly rated..

You will also need a separate grinder.
Dual boiler is a great pickup at this price.

      Edit: yes

    • Do they price match in store with their commercials?

I have commercial account but also have $90 storecash expiring in a week so would prefer to buy from tgg retail store.

Think I'll get bes920 rather than regretting it down the line.

      • Yes they should, price matched it for me

      • Yes, I've done so multiple times over the last few weeks. I priced matched a dishwasher in-store with commercial price mid Nov. Got the store cash and price matched the dual boiler for $905 + discounted gift cards. Yesterday I priced matched a new vacuum with their commercial price which was apparently below their cost price and used store cash from the dual boiler.

I'm sorry I spent 320 on my BES500 when they were on sale April 2020, now I have all of the accessories (a few hundred dollars worth) and now I'm reaching to the limit of the machine. If I had have bought the dual boiler first I would have had this issue

    • yes

Generally yes, but it may not be what you want.

The Dual Boiler requires pre-heat, only takes a few minute but still not as instantaneous as the Barista series.

It also requires a separate grinder, which means additional expenses. But a good quality grinder produces more consistent grounds than any build in grinders. However, two appliances takes up more counter space and require 2 power points or multi plug.

Another point of consideration is that the Dual Boiler uses 58mm portafiler, so if you already have accessories in other sizes, will need to re-buy them again.

So, depending on how far you want to go, the Barista series may be all you need.

    • It's only an investment if it'll generate a financial return.

Sorry, just a pet hate - American sales folk started using "investment" instead of "cost" even when it makes no sense, just because it sounds more smart; and we've started doing it too.

      • It will generate a financial return since I won't be needing to buy a coffee from a coffee shop anymore :)

But I get what you mean totally

      • not sure about that one chief.. thought investment can suggest non-financial returns as well?
        see oxford languages:

a thing that is worth buying because it may be profitable or useful in the future: "freezers really are a good investment for the elderly"
or, applied here, a thing that is worth the "additional" buying because it may be "more" profitable or useful in future.

      • It helps to actually know the various appropiate definitions of words before being a pedantic asshat about their usage.

        https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/americ…

3: [countable] a thing that is worth buying because it will be useful or helpful
A microwave is a good investment

        • They're basing that on the current usage of the word (i.e. it being used as OP has) rather than its original meaning.

As another example, the OED includes the word "literally" in its "not actually literally" sense.

          Do try to keep up.

          • @jong: The general usage of the word "vest" has been around since ~ the year 1000 A.D, literally the middle ages, and the initial usage in English was not financial.

The extended definition of "invest" to include generalised future benefit or advantage became common parlance in the 1800's, but was used to confer powers/rights and other advantage from the late middle ages (~1400ish). The financial meaning of the word only came across from Italian in ~1600.

Then with regards to investing in potential non-financial value or advantage as a specific concept, well : https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/invest-word-hi…
            | The extended meaning “to make use of for future benefits or advantages” (as in “to invest time or energy in something”) came into use in the mid-1800s.

So you were generally wrong starting around 1500 years ago, and, specifically, categorically, definitively wrong as of the last 220 odd years.

Do try to keep up. But hey, how fun is learning new things.

Anyway, Q.E.D, and you can both shutup now.

I have the 870. I think it’s great. The extra $400 would be a super diminishing return for me, plus the cost of a grinder.

Personal opinion—and one without judgement!—but the 870 felt like a huge splurge to me and I’m actually really surprised to see Ozbargainers so keen to spend $900+ on a coffee machine.

      • I landed at the same conclusion, picked up the 878 Breville barista pro for $760 2 weeks ago, paid with 15% discount gift cards, got the Breville redemption bonus and $50 store cash. (Net cost = $596)
By the the time I could get a 920 and a grinder it would be well over double the cost, and take up more bench.
        Very happy with my 878

        • I picked up a used Super Jolly for $150, bargains for grinders are out there. HUGE difference from the smart grinder pro, they are barely $150 worth

          • @Paudius: That's a good outcome, the ones that were recommended when I was looking were mostly 500-700 and the hassle of buying from Europe etc and I just couldn't be bothered with the research and effort, just wanted something easy even if knowing it's not the best or there is fit for purpose

            • @cook99: Took a fair bit of research, but if you realise a Mazzer Kony is the basic workings of a Niche, you can get pretty good espresso for 1/10th or 1/8th the price of those new smaller factor home grinders. They are just a bit bigger and probably worked in a cafe, are VERY easily serviced though and go forever

        • +1

Yeah I looked at some recommended grinders and ended up with kingrinder k6 (hand grinder but better bang for your buck)

This paired with DBD and gift cards (-15%), I ended up spending around $900ish so not too bad :)

$900 is small change when comes to dual boiler coffee machines. Once you price up typical E61 Italian or German built machines you are looking at $3k upwards. If you find instant coffee tastes good or you buy supermarket beans with best before dates go with the Barista express or Bambino (anything with a 54mm pressurised portafilter) If however you have been "ruined" buy nice coffee by the BDB and set aside another $300-$700 for a decent grinder. You won't regret it!

        • I'd like to counter this, you can buy supermarket beans (aldi are roasted locally and you can see roast dates on them) and get a decent grinder, this can yield pretty damn good results. The flavour profile and crema are just fine on these beans, just don't expect them to be the same as micro roasters

          • @Paudius: Yes you can get some beans with roast dates on in at Coles. Sensory Lab & Derby St were the ones that had them when I looked and they were roasted 3-4 weeks prior. The overwhelming majority of beans had best before dates on or were pre-ground so far from ideal. Maybe the Aldi beans are better? I will have to get some in to try.

            • @Solrak: If you stare at the side of their bags of coffee they have a best before date and another set of numbers which signify their roast date.
I've seen everything from a month old to a week old

            • @Solrak: Sensory Lab at Coles is around $50 per kg.
You have a lot of options for this price.

    • Yes

    • -3

It is not investment - you are buying commodity kitchen appliance with depreciating value!

It depends on what your priority is for making coffee at home.
Also understand that the difference is more than $400 due to needing to purchase a grinder as well as the DB.
The dual boiler is engineered for stable temperature (PID boilers, preheater on the group) and pressure of water for repeatable coffee extraction, while simultaneously delivering quality steam for texturing milk.
The BES870 carries many compromises for price and packaging to include a basic integrated grinder.
The water heating is via a single thermoblock, which is not as stable as a boiler, and tries to mitigate this with PID control like the DB (adjusts heating the water while measuring the output temp to adjust) but not the full approach used by the DB. This means the brew temp may not be as consistent as the DB.
A built in grinder is not ideal, as you will are encouraged to use it rather than a better one, or it is wasting space once you upgrade the grinder.
Additionally, the beans can heat up with the machine, and grinds may build up around the internals(Breville seem to separate the grind zone from the brewing components a little better than others)

        Thanks for the explanation!
        Really helpful

I ended up picking up the bes920 and have ordered kingrinder k6 to go with the BDB.

Down the line I can upgrade the grinder if required but at least I won't be feeling "stuck" with the integrated grinder.

With $90 store cash and gift card for -15%, I got it for around $700 so not too bad.

        • Thats a great buy for $700.
I use a kingrinder also sometimes (K4) and find their products to be well made and the grind I get makes great espresso.
Best of luck on your coffee adventure!

          • @repeat: Whats your main grinder if you dont mind me asking?
Planning to play around with k6 for at least a year and maybe next bf or boxing day ill get a good grinder to upgrade

            • @Spectre7: I have been using a DF64 for the last year with the DLC burr set, added a 3d printed dosing cup holder.
It cost around $400 USD at the time on alibaba thanks to promo and coupon.
              Working great.

    • unfortunately it won't amount to merely $400 more like $~600-800 as you'll need a separate grinder. and if you're thinking the Breville Smart grinder pro, i've read it's actually same as the ones built into the Barista line and it gets job done but not the best. i haven't tasted the difference myself as i went straight into the deep end with a eureka, but a good quality grinder makes apparently all the difference.

      • Yeah Breville smart grinder pro is apparently "decent" but for the price, a hand grind is much better value.
Ended up with this coffee machine + kingrinder k6 after some research late last night lol

        • I bid you good luck man!
I too went for a 1ZPresso J Max back then but quickly got sick of hand grinding. The staff at my local coffee supply store even warned me but alas. It is a cautionary tale that some of us must go through 😂. May yours sustain you at least a year

          • +1

            @KeplersLaws: You called it btw…
Got tired of hand grinding so ended up getting eureka mignon lol
Should've just gone this way from the start…

            • @Spectre7: ah well. it be what it be

i now keep my hand grinder at work and got an aeropress for currently still sub-par quality coffees on in-office days. not all is lost

              • @KeplersLaws: Have you considered the Picopresso for the office with your 1Zpresso?

  • -6

This machine is like PS5 😂

    • -1

Why would they neg you good sir?
Say, do have a ps5 at any store?

  • It's been this price on GGC for a while. Good deal though.

  • What's the price of the barista pro on this store? $899 is retail

    • +1

It's still listed as 899 on the GGC

    • +1

      Also $899

  • How could somebody access this price without the commercial membership?

    • +1

      Can't

    • Open a new super account with sun super. Will get you access at $0 cost to you. You will get a lot of emails fr sunsuper prompting you to put money in your account

  • +3

Bing Lee ebay now has this for $900 with ebay plus ($999 - $99).

  • Anyone seen these in the matt black (black sesame I believe) colour? Most places just have silver. ㅠㅠ

    • Black Sesame is the shiny one. Black Truffle is the matt one, but only available with the Smart Grinder Pro as a set.
