Aruba Instant On AP11D Desktop/Wallmount Access Point $159 + Shipping @ PC LAN

70

I've been looking around for a decent mesh networking solution and was suggested to check out Aruba Instant On due to the simplicity of setup & management, plus they generally work with almost any other router and don't need a 'main router' to control the access points. I found these desktop/wall-mountable APs which will suit my setup perfectly. Shipping for two of them to TAS is only $15.95. Watch out for a 1.5% surcharge on CC or PayPal, but nil if you pay by bank transfer.

The ceiling mounted version is $185 at PC LAN, but is cheaper elsewhere. However, the desktop version does have extra Ethernet ports on the back that allows you to plug other devices in with a cable, which is quite handy in some situations.

Note that these access points will require either power-over-Ethernet or an external 12v DC power source. That means you need a switch capable of sending 48v power along the cable or a PoE injector that works like an inline power source. Alternatively, you'll need to use an external 12v power adapter - an extra $41 expense. (Don't get ripped off thinking you need to also buy the JW114A power cord for another $11, they're just a standard IEC mains power cable which tend to accumulate if you've ever bought computer gear in the past.)

This is WiFi5 unit(so fairly old tech).
If you are OK looking at eBay/marketplace, I snagged an Aruba IAP305 for $25, which has been rock solid. Might be worth exploring than buying this for ~159.

99% of home users will never saturate WiFi 5 anyway. There's literally no point for the average user to spend a lot more on 6.

      • Exactly. That was the reason I said look around for better deals (some places are phasing out WiFi5 and those gears are offloaded very cheaply).
For me, paying ~160 for this is not good value.

For that price your could get 2 of the TP-Link Omada wall mountable access points:

  • don't need a 'main router' to control the access point

Be careful with this. The reason most of them need main controller is to do proper 'roaming', which turned out to be complicated mess.

Just FYI, this unit does not seems to have 802.11k & v.

  • Last time I looked, these EAP235 didn’t support mesh which the OP mentioned as desirable. Roaming is also a disaster with most Omada models unless you’re always running an Omada controller so you need an extra device or something to run Docker at least.

These can run OpenWRT if Aruba cloud managed software is not to taste.
