Hi All,

Just came back from Tesla in Chadstone. The Model Y has a $3000+. price drop. Just started today at lunch time.
Went for a test driver and when I came back, the sales guy said he just received an email confirming a price drop on the Model Y.
Being a true OZBARGAIN guy, I bought one. Took all of 5 mins to order. 2 - 4 month deliver time.
If anyone thinking of getting one, now is a good time before they have massive back orders I guess.

State Driveaway price
VIC $74666
NSW $71757
ACT $71337
NT $73570
QLD $72856

Arent teslas built with duct tape and some hot glue ?

    • +2

      Apparently you fail at reading.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Good timing I booked in a test drive for this Saturday!

  • -5

Many better options out there that don't fall apart after you buy them.

  • -3

Just bought 1, looking forward to the recall!

    • +1

Nah mate. Apparently everything that's made in china is a pos, except for the Tesla's. Where they reign supreme.

      • +2

Yeah, the Chinese don't have a clue about mass production or manufacturing, and all those major brands we buy from are such idiots for using Chinese production lines as well.

I'm just glad you weren't fooled by it all.

    • +1

Almost all Teslas recalls that you are reading about in news are just software updates that do not require a visit to service, you just hit a button "install update" in the app.

  • -2

Good deal if you can stack with the FBT exception https://www.ato.gov.au/General/Fringe-benefits-tax-(FBT)/FBT-exemptions-and-concessions/Electric-cars-exemption/

Tesla is the worlds safest car, the worlds fastest car and worlds cheapest car per km ( 0 if you have solar). Unfortunately, not run by the world's best company nor CEO :)

    • World's fastest car? Since when?
Lucid Sapphire and Bugatti chiron begs to differ.

Any ev car is the cheapest with solar. Technically the kona ev would be cheaper as its more efficient than any Tesla.

      • +1

For the 0-100km/h legal australia grand-prix, Tesla wins. In most cases I am at the city speed limit before I have crossed the street from one side to the other.

Kona would be a good car, give the Y,3 and Kona a test drive. EVs are the way of the future.

        • Fun fact, the Sapphire is faster than the plaid.

      • +1

It’s the fastest car you and your mates can ever come close to even driving.

        • My mate has a 9 sec R33, so nah. Rolling, dig or track it's not remotely as fast.

  • +20

The uninformed anti EV and anti Tesla brigade commentary is hilariously dumb.

    • +1

Bingo. Exactly like Apple posts. Oh my crap Chinese phone has a gazillion core CPU and terabyte of ram for $50

    • +5

We should thank them for investing in the future so we can get cheaper models later… Also means their used cars will be available on the second hand market for non rich people. It's the circle of the car market.

    • lmao literally what on earth are you talking about?

    • +1

thinking they are helping the environment

not just thinking is it? for example down here in sa weve had like a week straight on 100% renewable energy and most days we are in the high 80-90s for renewable vs total energy generation

thinking that everyone driving used non luxury vehicles are damaging the environment

i dont know if its alright for you to assume every tesla or even most tesla drivers think like that, obvious not denying there will be special individuals that like to 'look down on peasants' but that applies to luxury non-ev car owners as well and is certainly not exclusive to tesla owners.

and INB4 no i dont own a tesla or will think about getting a tesla or any other ev and no i dont like elon neither

  • -5

Silly buy. You could get a spanking Prado for $70K.

    • +1

Hmmm, my mate told me it cost over $200 to fill his Prado. With a Tesla it is zero if you have solar and probably $17 if you use off peak.

      • -2

Yeah, but he gets to drive a Prado around. Petrol/diesel is part of the deal.

        • +1

I get to drive a Tesla around, its powerful, safe and cheap to run and mine is FWD, though not offroad FWD. Everyday is awesome. The car is awesome, try one.

That being said Telsa the engineered product is great, the actual Tesla customer experience needs work.

          • @sockpuppy: They're a good deal for virtue signaling city slickers who think they're helping the eNvIrOnMeNt. Us rural and country folk have little interest in them, for good reasons.

          • +1

            @sockpuppy:

mine is FWD, though not offroad FWD.

            I assume you mean AWD?

        • +3

What’s so special about driving a Prado around?

          • -1

            @turkz1: Decades of engineering refinement

    • -1

That's nice. You should post it on Ozbargain.

  • +1

    Bargain!

    Thhhaaaaannnkkkksssss

Rather a Kia EV6, won't have to worry about it getting keyed.

    • But you'll need a key for EV6, for Tesla- you dont

  • The timing is rather strange.
Atto3 is not competing with Model Y. And the Atto4 will be mostly targeting Model 3. Then NIO or Yangwang model is nowhere to be seen in the Aussie market. Or they just want to solidify the market share before it happens?

    • +6

$TSLA stock price down 70% over a year might explain things.

    • +4

production increasing with demand weaning, they are reducing the cost to increase demand.

      • +1

Yea, I heard the Tesla market share in China is falling fast. And youtube had just promoted me that BYD U8 vid, holy…what a car… if what they are showing in the vid is true, or even just half true, it will crash the Tesla SUV to the ground, no wonder Tesla is doing so bad last year.

But I doubt such a new car will be imported into Australia anytime soon.

So, as a true Ozbargainer, I will HOLT, for now.

        • +5

errrr that U8 is gonna cost $200k AUD

          • @Creamsoda: 200k? Seriously?!….Noway it can be sold with that pricing, not even with all those new techs.110K-150K max IMO.

            • +3

@RooBun: Chinese media already mentioned the pricing will be around 1mil RMB…. this BYD is directly competing against the Mercedes G class.

    • +2

There's a BYD Sea Lion SUV that will compete with Model Y, probably Atto5?

  • +2

Buying a car associated with Elon Musk as a brand… MAY not be a good investment.

On the second hand market these have dropped by like 20k

    • +3

This is actually a series problem for Tesla. Brand perception has seriously tanked after this whole Twitter stupidity

Buys Twitter revokes the ban on people pedalling conspiracy theories including a guy who's speech resulted in attack on Capitol Hill and which resulted in deaths and injuries.

Bans anyone who disagrees with him, including a guy who reports movement of his jet and the journalists who shared the post.

          Free speech my ass!

                • +4

@[Deactivated]: Are you acknowledging being a far-right fascist scum?

                  • -1

@dealhunter52: Far right, yes. Any other adjectives are up to you.

                      • @dealhunter52: Idiot? Please don't insult idiots, he's worked very hard to find the bottom of the cess pit. He has all the rw inanities (woke, virtue signalling….) at his fingertips, doesn't need to consult his Inane Cliches For RW Dummies manual any more. On another deal he seriously and obliviously compared his rw extremist "ilk" with the (left wing) Swedish government, and swallowed his Telegram feed about Sweden's covid management "success story". Not sure which was funnier - his credulousness or his blind ignorance. Both come with rwnj territory. As his mate said on another deal "single digit [sic] IQ". Classic DK candidates.

                        • @Igaf: Agree…critical thinking part is missing in these RW nutters and arguing with one of these kind is futile, considering their main source of information is conspiracy podcasts and social media.

                          • @dealhunter52: We live in hope that one day science will discover a genetic mutation which predisposes some people to being patsies, or part of the brain which supresses gullibility.

        • Well, I'm just saying the free market has spoken. Like I said, these are super cheap second hand. I won't buy one because I don't want to be invested in Elon, and I am sure others are selling them for the same reason. If you disagree, maybe you should take advantage and invest in one? A well-read free thinking non-zombie such as yourself should easily have the spare cash lying around.

        • hi,

a bit off topic an sry for the stalk,
but how did your BAFANG build go? I'm looking to do a conversion of my commuter to cycle to work more this year. I'm drawn to the 1000W model, since I'm quite heavy ~100kg. How's the 750W working for you?

          • @ripprind: Fantastic, it's a great engine. 750W is about as powerful as I'd go, these motors have a terrific amount of torque so lots of stress on the bike. On the flat mine sits at 44km/h on full throttle and first gear. The bike weights 22kg and I'm 84kg, so it's moving some weight. Check out the middle picture. That's something they don't tell you about. You have to strap it to the bike, their method is insufficient to keep the engine from bucking when accelerating. You'll figure it out. Good luck with it, it's a fun project. https://imgur.com/a/RU3Ru9D

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Thanks for the photos! neat build!

Can you give me an indication on the range and your battery size? my work can be up to ~25km away. And can't always charge at work.

              • @ripprind: I've got the 17.5Ah battery. Range is a tricky thing to quantify. Depends on the terrain and how hard you push the engine. On flat ground at full throttle (level 5) and not using pedal assist you'll get about 25km @ 40km/h. If you pedal and use engine assist level 3 or 4 you'll get about 60km @ 25-30km/h. These batteries shouldn't be run down low or they don't last very long. Consider 30% capacity left as empty, so buy big.

i’m considering a tesla but not because of musk ….it’s because they invested early into all electric so have a head start while others are catching up and still trying to find their market ….. i don’t care who the ceo is …. i’d love an electric merc but don’t who the ceo is merc, bmw, or hyundai ….. don’t think, people buy iphones because of who the ceo is ….. it’s not like buying a gucci or versace t-shirt ….car is a bigger investment …..

  • -6

    Sockpuppet. Get real.

    • -2

Best car ever. Try one. That real as it gets.

        Play chicken w/ a tesla.
        Tell me how it went.

        • +1

It would alert you with chimes and red flashes and try to get you out of the way of a madperson. It is also the world's safest car.

          • +1

@sockpuppy: "chimes and red flashes" will not save your life.
            "safest car". lol

            • +1

@vasil: getting out of the way of mad people will, it will swerve to avoid a collision, though I haven't put that feature to a real-life test. That being said I haven't seen that many crazies in late model prado's. Extra loud Aussie V8 utes with driven by unstable guys ( high on meth or exogenous testosterone ) are the ones to avoid.

            • +5

@vasil: Do some reading before calling people out. https://www.drive.com.au/news/2022-tesla-model-y-ancap-safet…

"ANCAP says the Tesla's Adult Occupant Protection score is the highest awarded under the latest 2020-2022 safety criteria – and the Safety Assist result is an all-time record, irrespective of test criteria."

                  • @Jon Voights Car: Don't need Google to learn or source "Drive.com.au" for information.

        • -7

          No deal.

  • -1

Can you buy with 7% off prepaid Coles Mastercards?

  • +2

Seems the induction wheels for the standard range model is $500 cheaper too. It was $2900 when I bought mine and are now offered for $2400.

  • How does this compared to polestar ?

    • +2

3.6 kW difference, not great, not terrible

    • I sat and had a look at a polestar, it would be the Y or 3 over the polestar for me. Polestar was a bit "me too" , small frunk. Didnt take the polestar for a drive however, mayby worth doing both.

    • +1

Took polestar 2 for a test drive. It was smaller inside and noisier.

Love the irrational haters that grab a story like this or a fire and take that as an overwhelming reason against an EV.

For 99% of owners that use case has never occurred, nor is it going to get worse and only better moving forward.

Certainly not saying Tesla’s are magical vehicles nor a perfect replacement in every aspect of ICE vehicle but there are many reasons they’re attractive.

      • That's why I am wishing NIO and its battery swap can come to Aus…but it is just a wish

  • +3

Got a text from Tesla stating the discount is automatically applied to my order from August which I’m still waiting delivery. Happy surprise

  • Tesla dropping $3000 and the car I get delivered at the end of the month has increased by $1500 since ordering last year. My inner OzBarginer weeps.

  • How much is the replacement cost of the batteries?

    • Between 15-20k

    • +3

Plenty of owners out there have driven 500,000km+ and battery degradation has dropped by just 10%. In most cases, you'll never need a battery replacement.

      • +5

Care to define "Plenty" 500K seems like a lot of KM for any car given most cars only drive 10-20K a year?

        • Hangout in Tesla FB groups, people post their stats every now and then. Most never service their car except air filter and tyre rotation/change :)

          • +1

@noshopping: Sure maybe "Plenty" of drivers who hang out in Tesla FB groups, but I doubt if thats's "plenty" of owners period!. Ie a little exaggeration plus there could be "plenty" who arent on FB

This is not criticising Teslas or their advantage's, just that exaggerations are just that. "Some" maybe a better word to use.

          • -2

@noshopping: 'Hangout in Tesla FB group'

            Errr… No thanks

            @noshopping: Brakes don't need servicing?

    • +1

How much is the fuel savings over the expected life of the battery? Hint it’s more.

  • +1

did enhanced autopilot and fsd cop a price increase? $5K/$10K is now $5.1K/$10.1K?

    • Probably not relevant to this post to be fair, since you would never buy either of them during the ordering process when they can be ordered OTA after delivery and save on any tax/duty.

    • +1

As someone who check that box and paid for it, regrets, would recommend anyone keep their hard earned $$$ in their pocket.

      • +1

Thanks, care to share why you regretted it from one ozbargainer to the next? Was hoping there is at least free lane assist in the Tesla Y like in most modern cars.
