  • This is better than MG deals

    • MG dont even list the servicing costs for their cars on their website anymore for some odd reason.

    • +1

Coming from an MG owner, yes this is better value.
The MG4 is still the best daily drive I have ever owned and worth every cent.

    • MG have a 10 year warranry.
Also, it pays to negotiate some times: last year I managed to get the first two services included on my MG4, so no service cost until year 6.

From memory, MG servicing was something like $260 at 24 months, $960 at 48 months, rinse and repeat - so more expensive than Geely eventually.

      • +1

Why did MG remove the servicing costs for each model from their website? Infuriating.

      • managed to get the first two services included on my MG4, so no service cost until year 6.

Is that written up in a contract?

      I think it's a better car too…

@Gdsamp: Government subsidy on EVs is ending soon..

          • @Gdsamp: Ahh this isn't reddit…

      • +3

Wuling has a little noddy EV that is well under $10k in China. If it meets local crash standards it could easily be sold for less than $20k here.

        • -1

Government wouldn't allow it here that cheap as it would kill all other brands including petrol cars.

          • +8

@bcYield: There are no Aussie brands anymore so why would the government care

            • +2

@conork: Many dealers will lose the jobs. But I will never say no to a $20k EV :)

              • +6

@bcYield: Bad luck, we're a free market economy, no one cares about car dealers anyway.

                • @JIMB0: Dealers are like retailers. Gov's been helping local sellers for a very long time despite not having many local manufacturers. Without the limitations, cheap china things would have been flooded Australia. Will Amazon and Temu take over JB and OW soon? Why pay for the middleman JB and OW.

                  • +1

@bcYield: We already have direct to consumer from the likes of AliExpress, Amazon and Temu. The clock is ticking, eventually the middlemen will be forced to stop leaching and actually do something productive for society.

@Anubizz: I think he means Nissan, Mitsubishi, Renault, Jeep, Peugeot and that indian car company.

            • +1

@stevea: Those traditional brands might not exist.

But at least you will be able to turn them on, unlike some of the Chinese ones that will become paperweights when the servers get turned off and the traditional 7 years of spare parts goes bye bye with their non-existent head offices.

Even BYD, which seems to be the anointed one, has less than 100 employees locally.

          • @Anubizz:

Honda says it is here to stay in Australia with non-negotiable prices, despite falling short of its sales projections

Any Honda EVs? I used to be Honda's fan.

      • There's tax on that interest and the deposit rates would drop soon. So a $100 lost in the interest in the best case scenario. And the current servicing price would go up in 5 years. It's a good deal for those who're planning to keep the car for long.

  • What does $2000 bonus trade in mean?

Any bomb of a car can be traded in for $2000?

    • Based on the T&C I doubt any bomb. But they are not very specific:

The trade-in vehicle must be meet the appraisal criteria set by the authorised Geely Dealer. The final trade-in value will be determined by the Dealer following an appraisal, and the $2,000 bonus will be in addition to the appraised trade-in value.
The Authorised Geely Dealer is under no obligation to make an offer for, or accept, any trade-in vehicle and may decline a trade-in at its discretion without providing a reason. Customers should contact their local authorised Geely dealer for specific trade-in criteria.

      • +7

In other words, they will offer you 2k less for your trade in, then give you a 2k bonus. It's all smoke and mirrors. Do your own research and know what you car is worth, or else get ripped off.

        • I don’t think trade in value is the same as market value for your car as they have to resell to make a profit

    • Also does trade ins actually work with novated lease?

      • You get the value of the trade back when you drop it off.

      • They typically send you the trade in value as cash.

    • +1

We went to a Geely dealership and was told our car is too old for the offer.

Whilst our car is old, 2006 with 130k on the clock I’m surprised they said no. Oh well

      • Thanks for your comment @cloudy. I have been thinking about taking my 1998 KIA in to see what they would offer but given your experience I don't like my chances even though it's only 70K on the clock. :-(

  • +4

I test drove this the other week. I loved it, especially the massage seats.

It does play this ice cream truck sound that plays when you’re under 40kms though which was a bit annoying.

    • +3

You can unplug the speaker very easily and they have promised an over the air update. (I'll wait to see how frequently they make updates before putting my hard money down)

      • The update has been already rolled out in China about 3 months ago. It makes the ice cream truck sound quieter but doesn't mute it entirely. They didn't add an option for another sound.

Updates would be always lagging behind and have less features than in China based on Geely's track record.

They also seem to enable Android ADB mode for 3rd party app installation and customisation only in China. For export models (not just E5/EX5) it's disabled.

How was the suspension and ride quality?

      • +1

steering is reasonably precise but ride is very soft. i don't mind it for a family suv but some people hate it

  • -6

I am thinking about going with a used high mileage Kluger rather than this. I can do the oil changes and most of the services myself and save so much money in the long run. What do you guys think?

    • +10

Yes, savings $200 on oil changes a year
+ Paying ten times that for a heavy thirsty vehicle.

      Source: had a Kluger.

      • What about the Kluger Hybrid? Otlr the Camry Hybrid in terms for fuel? I drove around 74k km last year

        • +7

Assuming an average Australian fuel consumption of 7.5 km per litre and a price of $2 per litre (conservative for potential future price), the cost would be approximately $19,760.

          For BEV, assuming ~16 kWh / 100 km * 75,000 km = 12,000 kWh. 12,000 kWh * 35 cents/kWh = $4,200.

So you save over $15k a year. More if you can get away with charging overnight. Less if you need to do fast charging (recommend a different BEV with a higher charge speed if you do)

The car will pay for itself in 2.5 years of fuel savings.

          • @Shon: Since I am driving 340km daily, the Geely range may not be enough. Any other 500km plus LFP you recommend?

          • @Shon:

Australian fuel consumption of 7.5 km per litre

            I drive a VAG car 25 km/per litre (100km/4 litre)

          • +1

            @Shon:

fuel consumption of 7.5 km per litre

A Kluger hybrid will use less than half that, around 17 km to the litre and petrol is closer to $1.7. This gives a figure of $7,400.

Given you're out by almost a factor of 3, I can only assume your electricity figures are fudged the other way.

            • @JIMB0: Yeah I messed up. It meant to work out 7.5l per 100km, which would be ~$11k in petrol.

Even with this saving I'd only recommend a BEV in this situation if the driver has a fixed commute with DC chargers at both ends.

It was a mistake not a fudge. If you play with any online calculator you will see that BEVs are generally cheaper to run.

            • @JIMB0: I was gonna say the same thing, 35c per kWh is about 50% more expensive than what I pay. That's crazy high if your VIC. I know some states are more, but that's definitely on the high side.

              • @cloudy: Agree. I only charge overnight at home @8c per kWH or during day time 3 hours for free on the EV plan. I also have solar panels. Its pretty cheap to run if you have access to home charging + solar.

              • @cloudy: My rate in Brissy is 26c, so yeah 35c is definitely on the higher end.

    • +1

The electric car pays for itself in saved fuel costs over the lifetime of the vehicle. The question is whether these car can last 20 years.

      Are they LFP batteries?

      • +3

Yes i think they are LFP, but the main thing is that there will be far superior batt technologies coming in the next couple of years and this will be obsolete

        • E Waste product….

          • +4

@Gdsamp: Nah, ex-car batteries get snapped up straight away for stationary storage. Even when new tech comes out, people will still use these as cheap domestic batteries. They won't be e-waste for a very very long time.

            • @andyfc: Either way it’s a non-issue no one ever thought about how to recycle a car, so why focus on it now. That’s why we have junk yards.

              • @playaz91: Agree, half the VAG cars don't make it to 150k km before they're an economic write off, don't hear these weirdos banging on about that either.

        • Realistically next gen solid state batteries will be mainstream by mid to late 2026. By then there will be another next gen improvement around corner. If you need a car now that can save you fuel and maintenance costs then give it a go. Question is which one will last 20 years other than a Tesla. At this stage Byd seems like the one. Unfortunately atto 3 looks wacky and the newer atto 2 has not been announced if coming to Australia

        • Do they die of embarrassment when new battery tech comes out?

      • +2

This car uses an Aegis Short blade LFP battery & rated for 3500 cycles or 1 million kms.

        • yep this is the main thing in an EV for me.. longevity and safety of battery..and on this Geely comes out on top compared to likes of Tesla etc even though it's a budget model

  • +3

Such a shame it doesn't have android auto/apple carplay..

    • +1

I guess in fairness the Tesla doesn't either, but it's definitely something to make you hesitate. Especially when it's not even something they potentially plan to add later

    • According to Geely Apple Carplay OTA update by July & Android Auto by December 2025

    • It already does have AA and CarPlay via built in CarbitLink . Due to licensing Geely can’t actually tell customers about this.

      • No, it doesn't. And you can't even control your phone via it. It's screen mirroring only - shows just the display, but doesn't pass touch screen presses. Can't listen to the radio with Carbitlink on either.

      • +3

Yes, you need a separate plug in CarbitLink adapter to activate properly without just using screen mirroring.

Or you activate the actual AA and CP app (in Beta) without an adapter or CarbitLink using these steps.

To enter secret menu. Open the phone app in the car head unit.
Type #* follow by 4 digit.
The 4 digit is first digit is ( month ) + 5, second two digit is date and forth is hour of the day. (For 10,11 and 12 oclock is 0)
Example now is 4 May 5pm. Then the code is #*
        9045
Then once enter into secret menu, scroll down until reach Function Switch. Tap on it and will show Android Auto and Apple Car Play Toggle. Enable the android auto
Exit the menu then restart the head unit. The android auto icon wont appear yet until restart.
To restart the headunit, press voice command and right ok button on steering for 10 second. Hold until the system reboot.
After reboot, now you will see android auto icon all
grey up. Hold the Icon for 3 second or more until show details of the app. Go to app permissions and enable all, like microphone, location, contact etc.
        Enable all.
Enable phone wifi. Connect bluetooh to your head unit if you have not done previously. Plug in your phone usb, then plug in USB A on to the data port.
Your phone android auto will pop up android connecting.
Head unit will ask you to pair. Click pairing it will bring you to bluetooth menu of headunit. On the phone connection, there is a third icon now a android auto icon, tap it to connect and it shall start android auto.
Note the screen will say Pre Production Hardware not for Sale. As this is still developer mode.
Disclaimer. Try this at your own risk. AA still in developer mode.

        • The problem is the car software doesn't support wired Carbitlink.

        • Did anyone else get this to work?

  • +2

Pity there's so few geely dealers around

  • Very tempted. geely owns Volvo and so must have benefited from the tech knowhow.

    • they own Polestar (racing division of Volvo) and Zeekr as well

      • Yup pretty high quality cars. Only thing is cross brand cannibalization.

    • The fact they own those companies doesn't make them benefit from each other tech. They're absolutely disconnected entities, even the head unit software based on Android is developed by absolutely different teams. The Chinese one is based on Android-based Ecarx platform, where's the Volvo one isn't and is based on Android Automotive.

      • they share the same modular platform, GEA/SEA etc

      • gotta cut costs somewhere to get a product out at half the price of the other

  • MG S5 EV looks good and is in the ballpark on price.

At least that is RWD. 10yr warranty.

FWD EVs…not sure I want to be in one in the wet with all that torque to the front wheels.

    • +1

Sadly there is no perfect suv car yet. Under thr 50 grand. The ex5 would be the perfect car if it was rwd. If you can wait thr C10 2026 will the one to own. 800 volt and LFP with RWD.

The MG S5 is the driver car with Android Auto/Apple Car Play compared to the Atto 3 and EX5.

      • C10 isnt that a leapmotor hybrid?

        • Comes in BEV and EREV. They have updated the BEV version for 2026.

    • This has a much longer range of 430km. MG is only 340km.

      • There's a version with bigger battery too, but overpriced IMHO. I reckon MG will have specials soon that bring the long rance price down.

      • 430km in LR

    • +1

Don't worry about the torque in EX5. There's not much torque until the car hits 40 km/h. They suppressed the power output at low speeds to avoid wheel spin. It basically kills the EV instant torque benefit. Can't do quick acceleration from standstill on EX5.
