  • Cheaper on the good guys commercial

Great speaker. I also picked up this case / strap for it which makes it really easy to carry around.

    • Have you seen any that have something to protect the passive radiators on the side? I hate how they are exposed.

      • +2

Not that I've seen but they may exist. There are hard carry cases available like this one

        • +1

This looks ideal for when holidaying and need to pack in boot.
          Thanks!

I'm dissapointed that they dropped the Aux input. That aside, it's an impressive little thing for what it is.

    • JBL has embraced a single-use philosophy for the Charge 5. It's a Bluetooth speaker, full stop. There's no microphone, so it doesn't double as a speakerphone. There's also no AUX or USB input, so you can't plug in another music source.

Interestingly, JBL Charge 3 is now called JBL Charge Essential.

      • +4

One could argue that as it doubles as a power bank it is not a single use device

      • Does the JBL Charge Essential still have Aux in (did not see it listed in specs from above link)?

        • You can see it in the last product photo, but I also went through the product QA and learned that it doesn't connect with any JBL app and isn't a speaker phone.

          Charge 3 is better then.

I purchased Anker Soundcore Motion+ during last Boxing Day deal at $119.99 in Amazon and couldn't be happier with the sound quality for the price. It also has Aux input.

      • +1 to this

What's with the negs? Appreciate the feedback on your speaker, have a +1 on me.

        • probably to do with anker, which hasn't had a very good reputation lately

    • Agreed, I have the JBL Charge 3 or 4 being used as my PC Speaker and its perfect.
I was so close to upgrading to this for some better bass etc, Oh well.. Will just hold onto the old.

      • Buy a second one and use them in stereo mode. It’s another world

  • +2

Better sound profile to Booms (imho). Battery lasts 3 nights continuous play (used it in kid's room every nights)
cheaper on GG commercial as mentioned. Good build quality and water proof.
    Recommend.

  • +2

If you like bass, do yourself a favour and checkout the Anker Soundcore Motion Boom

Best bank for buck speaker going IMO.
Has been as low as $119.

Worth checking out Alan Ross's Review
    and this reddit post

That looks like it's been hit by the ugly stick.

So in summary, the review said it sounds muffled in the mids to highs but if you like bass it's good?

      • Haha yeah it does. But it absolutely cranks. Got my daughter one for Christmas and the sound quality and volume was surprising.

      • Yeah it ain't the prettiest, but will more than make up for it in sound. After all that's the main function of these things right. Once it's playing no one will give a crap what it looks like :)

The handle is actually really handy and feels very solid/robust.

      • He describes the JBL as icy, agreessive, lean, clean, powerful and punchy but lacks warmth and bass. It has crisper highs and mids at lower volumes while the SMB has a bass heavy sound and is more immersive at higher volumes most notably because it is able to continue producing deep bass at higher volumes which many other similar speakers are unable to do.

        Summary at 40% volume
        Summary at 80% volume

But I find the biggest advantage the SMB has is customisable EQ. You're not locked into whatever EQ JBL, UE or SONY think is best (for all occasions and all types of music). So if you prefer crisper highs and mids then you can have that.

Plus the SMB is stereo compared to JBLs mono.

        • Does the SMB have Aux in?

    • This Anker is also bigger than JBL by about a 1/3 in size?

    • Yep, that looks hideous compared with the JBL range.
      Not great reviews either.

      • If looks are your main reason for buying a speaker then go with the JBL. :)
90% 5 star reviews on Amazon not good enough for you?

        • I'll go with the JBL that has whopping 36,300 ratings and an average of 4.7 out of 5 compared with a miniscule 28 reviews in total for the Anker.

          • +1

@SimAus007: Agreed. The JBL has got many good reviews, the shear number of reviews being a direct reflection of JBL's massive market share. On paper though they both have similar percentages of high reviews.

However you said "Not great reviews either" of the SMB which is not true.
Perhaps the 6,825 reviews on Amazon.com might change your opinion?

If you prefer crisper highs and mids, a mono sound and lacking bass a higher volumes then go for the JBL. :)

Great speaker, but it doesn't have a fan, so no.

    • +1

but it doesn't have a fan

      What about @juns ?

      • Not me. I watched the price because my relative is interested on getting it. I had him purchase it first before posting in ozb.

        • So your relative is the fan then…

          • @jv: But what if it's supposed to be a gift?

    • +1

I'm a big fan of this speaker

    • I'm afraid to ask… but what do you mean?

  • This was $89.99 at JB HIFI before xmas

  • Worth checking out the LG XBOOMGo PL7 Portable Bluetooth Speaker - I got it for around $180 on sale a couple of years back and have to say its a really good speaker!

  • If you don't mind waiting…until April it seems. It's on backorder from JBL for various colours.

Really love my Charge 5, contemplating getting a 2nd to setup for stereo configuration. Anyone done this and is it really worth it? In the real world just because you can, how often do you go to the effort of doing it?

    • +1

I’ve done this and I can’t do without stereo mode now. It’s another world in terms of listening experience. It’s more than worth it, it’s a must do

      • Fantastic, thankyou sounds like its totally worth it!

  • How does this compare with the Tribit StromBox Pro?

  • Posted about the Charge 5 during the last highlighted deal. I think it's a fantastic speaker, but I'm not a qualifued audio-neer.

I've had it at low volume, I've had it at full volume - sounds great either way (had the Baywatch soundtrack pumping…. The Hoff never sounded better!).

Curious as to how different it would be adding a second speaker and then pauring them together.

  • any thoughts on how this compares to the larger JBL ultimate 3? seeing that for approx $150 on ebay

    • +3

All the cheap JBL speakers on eBay are fake

      • Bummer, yeah makes no sense they'd be that cheap but boggles my mind that theyre allowed on ebay if they are fakes.

    • "JBL ultimate 3"? cant find that model
