With inkjet printers, the most important question is how much are those ink cartridges?

    • -4

      Google is your friend

      • +2

Pretty sure it's a rhetorical question. Can Google answer this question, how many ink cartridges do you need to buy every year because of dried inks if you only print once or less a month?

        • Exactly. HolyCr4p did you notice I said "With inkjet printers", not "this printer", so I am referring to all inkjet printers in general.

    • +2

      The other questions are:

      • Does it support ink tanks?
      • How frequently do the print heads clog up with ink?
    • It is in the ad: $149! Well over half the hardware cost!
      No a3 duplex scanning

      • What, the first third party inks I found were just $39 for a full set - https://www.inkstation.com.au/4-pack-brother-lc3317-compatibā€¦

        • +1

Very nice - now how about the LC432 which are the cartridges for this printer, for which Inkstation doesn't list an OEM version?

          https://www.inkstation.com.au/4-pack-brother-lc432xl-genuineā€¦

The 6530 model takes your cartridges and there are dodgier ones for $47, but it doesn't look like anyone has got around to putting out OEM ones for this :-/

          • +1

@terrys: Good pickup - that's the page that Inkstation says is for this printer !!!
But you're right, they are NOT the right cartridges…

      • +1

$149 is just for YCM. You'll also need black so $220 for a set.

Am sure the companies can afford to give these devices for free. Because the cartridges and other parts are cash cows for the rest of the life of device.

Recently bought a Brother laser printer. One set of 4 toner replacement is over
      Blk $80
      Yellow $120
      Cyan $120

      Magenta $120

      Total = $440

PS - The toners that come with the printer are just half life or lesser for other cheaper ones.

Recommendation: Go for Ink Tank printing only. I think EPSON gives you that option.

But you can get easily get a complete toner set for Brother or others for less than $100 delivered, 3000 page rating.
Unlike with inkjets, they don't try to stop you using compatibles.

An equivalent amount of ink for the above would cost $1000.
Without compatible cartridges available, this is expensive. Of course I assume the only reason for posting is that it does A3.

        • Now the printers are fitted to detect the original toners via a microchip. I bought some compatible toners and printer refused to detect those.

      • +1

Yes but laser toner doesn't dry up like inkjet so I've used the same set of cheap ebay toner for years and years

      • And how long do they last? The toners in my laser are years old and still printing, I had to feed my inkjet new cartridges constantly, even if I hadn't been using it.

  • +1

I own this but its probably one or two models before as its over 6years old ….. the ink tanks are large and last a long time…. ink head does unblock with a clean if there are issues - i have nothing bad to say about this and would buy again.

    • Over 6 years old isn't this July n2022 model - the cartridges that offer 3000 pages are about $240 a set, and the "normal" ones offer 500 pages each for ~ $150. When OEM ones come out those who bought this will be quite content - I've never had a bad Brother printer - but ATM it only looks like a bargain rather than a bulky 'lower range that didn't move fast enough" dump it probably is.

That said, the family look like a winner, with double-page A3 scanning in higher models, and A3 at this price is quite nice so the ink should be around for a while.

      • re: Over 6 years old isn't this July n2022 model
ahhhh yes - an expert of the internet are you

    • How did you clean yours? I tried cleaning mine by syringing windex 50% + 50% of (90% ethanol) into the tubes but didnt work.

do i syringe it in and leave it in overnight?

  • Inkjet? Legit question, why? Lower cost for color? Long time don't use one, are the print heads still on the cartridges and clogging all the time?

    • Inkjet models seem to be smaller as well - so you're paying for a smaller version.

    • Why an A3 inkjet? My guess is because people might not want to spend $1500+ on a budget A3 laser

    • +1

Because laser printers can't print photos.

      • We got Officeworks for that.. Still have some balance on a card loaded with $5 almost 2 years ago.. lol

  • Doesn't ship to WA? Anyone else getting errors?

  • Can you print a4

    • Yes its up to A3, not A3 only. You adjust the paper tray for smaller pages.

    • HP sells similar machines at half cost and they can even print larger than A3 if you can only find the paper. HP prefers imperial so a Japanese brand is preferable for metric users. HP also tends to overengineer their products eg have too many unwanted features that also can go wrong.
Bit like a Motorola phone with endless sub menus.
Brother printers tend to wake up at night to do self checks, bear in mind if used in bedrooms.

I'd be all over the inkjets if the running cost is similar to lasers. Learned the hard way around 25 years ago. Bought one of the first commercially released, or so I thought, by HP for $875. Beautiful print but soon learned if you don't use it at least once a week the inks would dry up and they weren't cheap to replace. Four cartridges at a cost of over $40 each and they don't print many.

    • Lasers are way cheaper for volume users. Just color rendition is up the creek.

    • You can't have looked very hard - there are plenty of Inkjets that have running costs of almost zero.
The none-genuine LC233 cartridges for my Brother inkjet cost $4.39 each.

      • Guess he is talking a 1995 story.. hence $40

    • You'll want an ink tank printer, and check it has compatible ink available.
