    • Yep plug it into the fixed wireless NTD.

  • Would this work well as a node for an ax86u?

  • Help! Lokking to upgrade a FritzBox 7390 - installed as part of original FTTP testing for mainland aus rollout in pilot area! - so yep 10+ years old.

With work from home (x2) struggling with dropouts and vc performance in spilt level double brick and concrete floor upper new home with kids on devices also.

Will this assist with perfomance and stability? Or is there a better option? Thanks!

  • Hi
Can this ASUS router facilitate one network for phones, PC, etc and a second isolated network for security cameras that are prevented from calling out to the Internet?
    Does "AP isolation" handle that?

I read a review of highly rated Synology RT6600ax which said "includes ability to operate multiple, different WIFI network SSIDs, with different policies including QoS and firewall rules for different use cases. These can be completely isolated from one another or linked if, say, a printer needs to be shared. Extensive firewall rules can enable one-way only traffic: for instance if a printer needs to be shared. Extensive firewall rules can enable one-way only traffic: for instance if your NAS is running surveillance software it can see a one-way feed of an IP camera, but if the camera is compromised, it can't be used to attack the network."

Wondering if this ASUS router can do all that. It sounds pretty neat!

    • Asus doesn't have a isolated VLAN for IoT clients.

  • I was looking at bridging Tenda Nova mw12 tri-band mesh (3 units, $200 at Amazon) with my Asus Ac68U for end to end wireless coverage. If Ethernet backhaul is not an option, which one would be a better option - Nova + ac68U vs 2 AX56 + ac68U? Many thanks in advance!

Try not to combine AC & AX models in same mesh. You might have more issues then you are trying to solve.

      AC = Wifi 5
      AX = Wifi 6.

Go with AX if you are upgrading.

      • +2

You should upgrade your name to axe310 :-)

        • +1

Happy to do it, if I can migrate very easily without loosing my profile lol.

          • @ace310: I’d go for it. With summer in full swing, one doesn’t want to be over-tightening their profile

  • is this mesh better than ubiquiti or tp-link deco? i'm currently choosing network setup for new home

    • I had ubiquiti ap pro and went to asus ai mesh more for simplicity. Ubiquiti is good, but its very modular and more a enterprise product, so you kinda have to be a network geek.

No experience with deco, but with what I understand its more a cloud based managed solution which I'm not a huge fan of.

    • I would say Asus is better then tp-link if you know how to work around routers. No experience with ubiquiti but as mentioned above it is more of an enterprise product which is expensive as well.

    • I found ubiquiti very easy to setup it was literally a Next > Next > Next job once you had the controller installed etc.

I ran ubiquiti AC Lites for a family member because I read it was set and forget and the AP's store all their config very nicely after configuration

It has been 100% reliable and I've never had to look at it since and I'm not expecting to ever have to whereas with Asus when I installed it a couple of years ago I'd expect to have to come out once a year or so when an AP or the configuration drops off (although that hasn't happened to me yet)

That came at the sacrifice of some top end speed since the AP's are generally not faster than the equivalent Asus or TPLink router but for now it's not necessary as the family member never intends to upgrade from 50mbit NBN

I think Asus firmware has slowly become more mature having custom firmware etc and people using it and working on the features and the uptime is now very good

I use Asus since I can resolve issues but I still wouldn't use it for a network I need to support

  • I need the RT-AX86U :(

    • Same. I only have a 250 fttp connection but I need that great range. Shame it is $300 more.

      • I have 1000 fttp awaiting installation. Pro version was released overseas not long ago. Not sure if its hitting our shores any time soon..

  • So with this router, if you have FTTN you would need a modem router?

    • You'll need a VDSL modem that goes inbetween the wall socket and the WAN port of this (or any) router. A cheap modem-router (such as one from your ISP) will also do the trick so long as it can be set to bridge mode.

  • +2

    I think it's back at $229

    • +1

Bugger, was about to pull the trigger. Ah well, next time!

  • +1

Ignore expired. Price back down again

    • Yep, I see $139. I put in an order as I want to replace my Netcomm NF18ACV which still works but it's I know it's days are numbered.

I will miss all the purdy lights.

      • I'm on the same router. Not sure this'll be that much of an upgrade.

        • I have no idea if the ASUS is better. It's not hella old and dying so it's good enough for me :)

  • If you bought two of these to mesh, if you put the second one at the edge of the range of the first, will it increase the speed? or just pass through the low speed? Hope that makes sense.

  • +1

It is still $139, just checked.

  • Price still at $139, would this be much of an upgrade for someone on FTTC 50/20Mbps in a small apartment. Find the wifi seems to slow in the bedrooms at times, currently using the vodafone wifi hub 1

  • This one ax56u or Google Nest as Mesh? Google Nest is expensive $345 for 2 and this will be $278 for two ax56u.

    • Neither is tri band so unlikely to make any different. Run ethernet backhaul if you can for optimal performance.

      • I would have ethernet all over the house. AX56U or Google Nest as Mesh will still plug into ethernet. This is just to improve wifi.
Is there a better solution? I have already purchased AX56U as main router.

        • +1

If you can get an AX53U cheaper as a mesh node then get one of those. Backhaul to the AX56U via ethernet.

  • I just got the TP-Link AX50 for $135. Is it comparable to this model and is Asus really that much of a better brand for routers?

  • Back to $229 for me

  • The price is showing as $229 when I click the link to the deal, how do I get the $139 price ?

    • +4

Create a time machine and go back at least 3 hours but not more than 12 since we don't know exactly what time the deal started and we don't want you waiting around too long

  • Question to the community. I have a RT-AC5300, and was planning to use this (RT-AX56u). Confirming this is the best configuration and not the AX56u as the router?

    • +2
      • +1

        Thanks for that!
Does the don’t mix AC and AX technology statement still hold true if I’d like to use Ethernet backhaul? Thank you!

        • I'm not a specialist but would assume not

  • +7

I know the deal has expired but for anyone interested. Mine arrived tonight, quick setup as usual for Asus products.

Setup via a 250/20 connection. Maxes that out as expected. For those who queried the range (including me), I ended up only getting this device for the centre of the home. Consists of 4 bed, 2 living and single storey. Covered the whole house, through walls etc, with ease.

Full speed around the entire house so glad I didn’t get one for meshing as it’s not required, for my home at least anyway.

    • +1

Thanks for the quick update, I was worried about range as well.

    • So if I have Ethernet at the centre of the house, better not to connect ax56u in garage next to nbn but in the centre of the house on Ethernet and that will mean no need for mesh? FTTP NTD can plug into carrier modem and then into Ethernet patch panel in garage. Am I getting it right?

      • +2

I believe so mate. I have the exact setup (Except mine is Opticomm FTTP). The modem is situated in the garage. Ethernet to patch in Garage and then I have an ethernet wall port in the centre lounge room which plugs straight into the AX56U.

I've tested from every room in the house on the 5G band and got 277/22 on my 250/20 plan.

If you have any dramas or anything flick me a message. I'm not a guru at all but happy to help out.

        • Thanks mate. Will get back to you if any issues.

    • Mine arrived this morning and I'm not getting wifi6. My MacBook M1 showing 802.11ac / HP ZBook showing protocol as Wi-Fi 5.
I've imported settings from my AC68U. 802.11ax mode is enabled under wireless settings. Any tips?

      • +3

Probably best not to import backup from an old router, I'd say that's screwed something up. Start fresh.

        • Yeh. That's what it was..
Didn't want to assign all the manual IPs. Oh well
          Thanks mate!

    • +2

Got mine today, able to get full speed from my third bedroom which is farthest from the living room. Thanks to OP, ended up not buying a mesh system.

      • Is that a single or double storey building?

        • +1

Single storey. For context i had google nest router, and i was not getting any network from my living room to my bedroom.

  • Can i use this with Belong NBN Modem/Router / What's the advantage ?

    • -2

If you don't know its probably not for you.

    • The purpose is to improve the wifi network, speed and bandwidth. It really depends on your existing set up and size of your place to see benefits. It also enables to create a mesh to provide more coverage if you add more router in your network.

You can use it, but YMMV

  • I'm on TPG FTTB and just can't get the router to talk to the ISP and get access to internet.
I can just plug an GL.inet mango or an apple airport to the TPG modem and it works straight, I get internet through my secondary wifi. this thing just refuses to connect to it.

Anyone with the same setup managed to get it working?

    • +2

FTTB is vdsl right? You need to run your modem in bridge mode to use this router.

      • Cheers, bridge means the router handle the authentication, not the modem? WFH tmr, don't want to mess up the modem config. Was hoping to update the firmware online but will probably have to do it offline - didn't intend to use the router with FTTB

        • +1

Correct, otherwise you'd have to set the router up as just an access point which is kind of a waste.

          • @vodamerc: I'm so confused right now
I gave up last night but today thought I'd switch to AP Mode to at least access internet and update firmware online.

            • I switched to AP
            • Was prompted to update the firmware (internet!!! Yay)
            • Got disconnected while restarting.
            • Connect back to wifi on the laptop - ok but no internet access
            • Try to connect to wifi from phone - nope, can't even connect to wifi

Thought I'd just revert back to default mode, since I lost internet anyway

            • Restarting, connect back on wifi
            • And surprise, I've got access to internet through ISP without changing the modem to bridge mode.
  • +1

Thanks OP! Finally setup this router and it's running a treat. Specifically, the latency on general web browsing is a great improvement from my old router.

    • +1

I've noticed that too. There is no longer a few seconds of lag when going to some pages.
