Shame you need a Ring subscription to get good value out of this. Else you simply get a notification but cannot see footage in the past

Thanks for the info, will definitely pass now lol

Yeah. I saw the offer in the inbox and am looking to install cameras/lighting so was tempted. Needed to read reviews to find about about this one feature that I consider mandatory - recording video without subscription.

Given this MASSIVE FLAW in the product, it is misleading to advertise it as a camera without also noting that you cannot record anything without a subscription. I might have got into the Ring system and eventually upgraded to a subscription. However, this borders on deception IMO and Ring are now off my list completely.

You think that's bad, i just had friends buy cameras for their house and they cost slightly more than this, then had to buy 4 SD cards, then 4 solar panels because battery life was trash which made them way dearer than this. And now they found out someone can just knock the camera off the wall and take the memory card.

lol no thanks, give me the Ring cloud subscription any day. I have about 8 cameras and the sub covers them all, with 6 months storage, discount on Ring purchases, lifetime warranty on all cameras. Just one camera failing pays for the sub.

It's not a "MASSIVE FLAW" in the product, and in fact i feel storing the footage on a card in the camera is a massive flaw.

        • For me it's a massive flaw, though you conveniently misrepresent the flaw I described. People ought to know that you are limited to subscription to record. I hope my all caps helps people who want to be informed

How can having the option to store on a card be a massive flaw, as you contend? Not that I had mentioned this, so the implied criticism is unwarranted. But that extra storage method must be a benefit, surely?! Other cameras have SD card, local network storage AND subscription options. I intend to try one of those options rather than being locked in.

Good for you that Ring suits you. Ring's cameras and business model don't suit me because of the information they failed to make clear. I can get cameras much cheaper, non-battery (or battery or solar) powered, with local storage (SD card or via wifi), and cheaper subscription option that will suit any number of cameras. The savings on subscriptions over Ring's service would also cover the cost of extra/replacement cameras every few months.

Dumbest thing i've read in a long time. Saving security footage to a secure offsite location, which you and your family can view from anywhere is a MASSIVE FLAW… Yet saving it to an unreliable SD card in the camera that anyone can knock off the wall and take is better? How about forking out $350 for a Eufy homebase after paying $369 for their comparable floodlight camera only to have someone break in and walk out with your homebase haha! $700 deep for one camera Oops.

Ring's cameras and business model don't suit me because of the information they failed to make clear.

You mean the information that's clearly explained on the Floodlight cams product page that you lack the mental facility to read? https://i.imgur.com/LQB4XJ7.png That's on you pal not Ring.

Good for you that Ring suits you.

Certainly does, for a whopping $2.80 a week i get unlimited storage for 8 cameras and never have to worry about storage limits on SD cards, cards failing or buying more hard drives for a home base with tiny storage. I get lifetime warranty on all cameras with upgrades to the latest model camera and tech if mine are EOL.

The cameras popup live thumbnails on all the TV's when motion is detected with the option to view it live fullscreen. I have Philips Hue bulbs in lamps around the house come on different colours depending on what camera detected motion (ie red light is front camera, orange side etc) for when phone is on silent. They integrate with Echo Show so i can call up a camera feed by voice from all the Shows scattered around the house.

And some of my cameras are going on 5yo in the western sun and never missed a beat. Terrible product huh!

Which brand do people recommend where we don't need to subscribe to their plans?

    • +2

It was eufy, until the recent controversy.

I don't think there's many options left that doesn't require a subscription, beside setting up your own home server with PoE HikVision/Dahua cameras

      • What recent controversy, will my eufy stop working without subscription? I've already been told that my Arlo cameras will soon no longer work without a subscription wtf.

    • I think I'll try Wyze. $60 per camera. Good reviews. SD card. Can connect to WiFi to record, I believe. Cheap subscription if you choose to. Can add a spotlight, or use your own motion sensor lights. Wyze has a similar 2 x floodlight 1 x camera plus alarm unit in the US. Maybe that will be offered here in the future…

      • security issues with wyze

        • Having looked a bit further, the V1 had a relatively minor privacy issue and Wyze stopped selling them. Even then, the issue was generally limited to users on your wifi network.

What are you referring to and is it in relation to the V2s or V3s that are the only ones available now? "Security issues" is a broad assertion.
