    $199 for a refurb?
    What a rip-off.

    • +3

Already bought this months ago @$99.
Not a refurb, but brand new in sealed box.
$199 is price JB was selling them for.

Seems "refurb" is to justify low price to clear old stock, compared to latest 4K version. Otherwise people wouldn't pay over $400 more for those!

      • -3

$199 is price JB was selling them for.

        JB sold refurbs?

  • How does this compare to an NVidia shield? Is there any ongoing fees and charges?

    • +19

The nVidia Shield and Fetch Mighty boxes serve different purposes.

There are limited apps on the Fetch box and they are controlled by Fetch. There is no app store. The nViidia shield wins in this department as there are thousands of apps available.

The Fetch Mighty is primarily a PVR, so it can record FTA TV as well as the streaming channels that come in the channel packs. It has a great EPG which provides remote record and series recording.

After activation ($1), there are no ongoing costs. There are channel packs ($6 each) where you can stream (and record) numerous channels (eg. Discovery Channel, BBC Earth, ESPN etc.) Details here: https://www.fetchtv.com.au/packages/premium-channels

You can also purchase/hire TV series and movies.

The Fetch Mighty has a decent media player and can play most media from USB or stream from a PC.

      • I have a fetch I have not used in years with the hard drive. Can It Still Be used for FTA as I no longer pay for the service via my ISP.

        • No, as it needs an active account to boot into the main screen that displays the FTA channels.

        • Same here. I wonder if there is a way to hack the devices to use them or repurpose them

    • +13

No ongoing fees if you don't add any channel packages. Great for recording FTA programs as it has a 1TB HDD.

      • +15

        Great for recording FTA programs

What on gods earth is worth watching on FTA these days ??? I'd cancel it if I could….

        • agree on the whole - but good for kids shows like Bluey, etc

        • @pharkurnell
          " I'd cancel it if I could…."
remove your aerial? then again you might miss out on the test cricket
          .

        • +1

Do you like watching ads? I dont watch much FTA but for things like the Aus Open its much better to record and FF the ads rather than stream and have to put up with commercials. There are a few shows on SBS that it makes more sense to record vs stream for the same reason.

        • There’s plenty worth watching, but I almost never watch anything live. I use Plex DVR to record and it automatically skips/removes ads.

      • The only things worth recording will be available on their 'on demand' services.

        • +11

Yes, but at a much lower resolution, and with ads you can't fast forward

          • @PhilToinby: Most of the ones I watch on iView don't seem to have any ads.

            • @jv: Not sure if serious but ABC is the only broadcaster that doesnt have ads. (yet)

          • @PhilToinby: Use the plugins on Kodi to not have ads.

Also, over the air TV is only 1080i for the HD channels and 576i for SD. Most of the IPTV streams I’ve seen are higher resolution than that. Assuming you don’t have shit internet.

  • +20

I have had one for years and got 2 from this deal. Absolute steal at $79.

    • Agreed

    • +2

You said it. I bought one at $199, and its got the problem where the picture doesn't return after coming back from sleep. I also dislike how much power it uses during standby (hdd always spins = lots of power and heat) and the fact you can't add certain apps or upgrade the hdd. But for luddites who refuse to move on from TV, it's been fantastic.

      Real bargain price here

      • dislike how much power it uses during standby (hdd always spins = lots of power and heat)

        A spinning 3.5" drive only uses about 10 Watts…

        • +1

          Only 10 watts…..
It would be nicer if it spun down & the unit "only" used 1watt in standby! Better than the ongoing 16+watts :-)

    • I have also had one for years and really liked it - but I watch so little FTA nowadays, and the apps interface for things like Prime and Netflix mean my Fire Stick is actually much easier to use so tends to be my default, not the Fetch box anymore.
Every so often I'll use it to watch some recorded FTA shows, but not much.

    • +1

It servers a purpose for boomers etc, earlier gens are using on demand across the board.

  • -2

sorry but this sort of thing died with TiviMate release 2 years ago on android tv, a reason why this is cheap as. $11 a year and never looking back

    • +1

Can you please elaborate? I don't understand what you are saying.

      • +4

I think they're saying they pay people who google free IPTV lists and put them into an app so people can enjoy upto 18 actual working streams in 360p quality

        • +1

What you taking about Willis, quality is far superior to using an antenna. You can have hundreds, but I use the 30 or so Sydney channels.

        • old person upvote….. Go…….

    • +1

Agree, TVMate is what I use to watch Australian FTA in high definition, could not possibly go back.
Premium was/is like $30 for a lifetime subscription.
Much better quality than using an antenna.

    • -1

Hi mortgagetightass, I only just downloaded TiviMate last night. Do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions about it via PM? Thanks

    • Yeah, TiviMate is so much better that you can just install it and watch TV with no setup or technical knowledge. Wait…

You can do that with Fetch though!

  • +2

mine is collecting dust but you do you

    • +24

It took Balls to say that.

  • so get this, power on, connect to home wifi/network - get free to air tv for a low price of $79?

    • +7

No. You still need an aerial connection for FTA

      • +17

        Don't confuse the younger generations.

    • +2

You need to connect your Fetch Mighty box to an aerial to get OTA FTA TV. There are FTA catch-up TV apps that allow you to stream some of the FTA channels.

    • ahhhh thanks .

My aerial connection is pretty shite - so i rely on IPTV setup for FTA.

      • As does anyone else not living in the 90s.

      • what do you use for your IPTV?

          • @PainToad: yep - that's what I use too.

          • +2

@PainToad: Wow, this is an amazing resource, had no concept this sort of thing excited. Thanks so much for sharing.

Just plugged the URL into an app on my Apple TV and suddenly have every FTA single channel with an EPG!

          • @PainToad: I have a major TV reception problem and Channel Seven is constantly pixelating.
I do get all the other stations,Nine,Ten and ABC without an issue.
It's my antennae that is the problem and due to high winds and rain over the last few months something has knocked it out of kilter ???!
Can you help me or suggest something rather than getting a Antennae technician to come around…?
How do I connect with a IPTV and what is it ?
            THANK-YOU VERY MUCH.

            • +1

@robjan02: You did retune Ch 7 on 30 Nov as they said to??

Was having terrible FTA reception in Brisbane only on 7. Blamed the battered old antenna, but better antenna didn't improve.
Often unwatchable. Fetch failed to record any of 7 network.

              Now resolved after simple retune!

              • @INFIDEL: YES …Thanks Rather be Travelling.
I'm in Brisbane and same thing…!
I did re-tune my Fetch and 7 (specifically from 6.00pm) is terrible !
I'll try and re-tune it again after reading your comment.
                Thanks again ..:)

                • @robjan02: Am behind a mountain, so always had poor reception. So didn't watch 7.

With 6 tuners, started watching some 7flix for Family Guy, but it rarely recorded on Fetch. Especially in the rain. Checked - was also pixelated on TV which is fed from different antenna.

Retuning worked for me, all eps now record👍
                  Good luck 🍀

          • @PainToad: Yep been using that for years, it’s great.
            Works well with Jellyfin

          • @PainToad: @SpamMeNotInOz @PainToad - Yes but what do you use for the 'good' stuff? ;)
I've been trying to find a decent IPTV host for ages. Happy to pay but none seem to be stable and/or have quality/non-buffering feeds.

PM me if you know of one.

      • +1

        @spikiii
"My aerial connection is pretty shite - "
opposite here, 'good' aerial, crap internet (1+km of copper FTTN)
        .

  • Are these the latest ones with 4k?

    • -1

No. That's why these are being cleared out cheap.

    • +5

This box does support 4K, but it's not the latest edition.

  • +2

Has anyone upgraded the HDD to a bigger size? Is that possible?

    • +1

Nope, while the drive can be replaced unfortunately the firmware is picky and it won’t boot unless it’s a 1TB HDD. Still, 1TB is a lot of TV and the recording management features work well.

  • -1

Have not watched FTA TV for a few years now

  • $79 for 1TB FTA recorder is how I would view this device.
The extra pay-TV channels and Optus Sport are well integrated.
The streaming apps are horrednoius, so steer clear if that's what you're looking for.

    • +1

Its the ability to pause and rewind tv for me. Not a huge price for that alone if you watch FTA at all.

    • Personally I find the apps Netflix and Prime work ok (that's all I use), saves swapping remotes. Annoying that Binge isn't there.

  • -1

I'm with iinet can I use this through them? Or do I just need to go through fetch to subscribe? And is this the 4k?

    • +1

A retail Fetch box works with all internet providers. All you need to do is create an account directly with Fetch. You will receive an activation code which you enter into the box when setting it up.

The box being sold in this deal is a 4K Fetch Mighty box, however it is not the new recently released model.

      • Is there any negatives to getting this older version? Seems like a steal for $79

        • +11

Not really. Difference between this model and the newer model are explained here:

At first glance, you wouldn’t pick the difference between the new Fetch TV Mighty (Gen 4) M681T model and the (Gen 3) M616T it replaces. Realistically, Fetch TV isn’t really expecting people to go out and replace their existing Mighty, instead this is a hardware refresh going forward to make the most of today’s technology as well as what’s on the roadmap.

Most of the improvements are under the bonnet, designed to bring the Fetch TV Mighty (Gen 4) into line with the Fetch TV Mini 4K released last year. It’s a major hardware refresh which impacts almost every aspect of the box.

For starters, the Fetch TV Mighty (Gen 4) gets a major performance upgrade. It doubles the performance of the processor, bumps up the RAM from 3 to 4 GB and doubles the flash storage to 8 GB. There’s still a 1 TB hard drive for storing recordings.

The four built-in TV tuners support the new DVB-T2 standard, while there’s also support for the new AV1 codec favoured by many streaming services. In terms of connectivity, the box steps up to Bluetooth 5.0, HDMI V2.1 with HDCP 2.3, and Wi-Fi 6.

In the short term, perhaps the most significant upgrade is that, like the Mini 4K, the Fetch TV Mighty (Gen 4) now supports Dolby Vision – which looks better than standard HDR10. The Gen 3’s lack of Dolby Vision meant that, when watching services like Netflix, I’d typically favour the streaming app but into my Dolby Vision-capable LG OLED. The Gen 4 now closes that gap.

The only drawback in the upgrade is that the new box loses a USB port, going from 2 x USB3.0 to only 1 x USB2.0. Realistically, that’s unlikely to bother many people. If you want to tap into your own media library, apart from playing content via USB the box supports DLNA streaming and features the Plex app.

  • -1

Does anyone know if Optus provided fetch box will work for free to air channels and recordings without any subscription?

    • +2

Optus boxes only work for the person who subscribed to it on their Optus account. In that instance, yes works fine for Free to Air and everything else.
On the other hand, one cannot activate a second hand box either directly at FetchTV or even if you have an Option account. They are paperweights.

      • Thanks Borg. That's what I wanted to know.
I will be relocating and I don't think Optus is selling Fetch service anymore and hence was wondering what can I do with fetch box.

        • +1

Send it back to them, they send you a print at home postage label.

When I signed up for NBN they just sent me a Fetch box which I sent back to them still unopened.

  • +1

I have bought 2 of these to add to holiday homes for the family and they were both the M616T versions. So even though it doesn't state it, it will most likely be the older M616T version with lower specs.

    https://www.fetchtv.com.au/specs

Plus, the Plex app is not a version made for the fetch itself. So you get limitations like not being able to correctly direct stream or direct play resulting in transcoding even though the hardware is amazing

    https://support.plex.tv/articles/204080173-which-smart-tv-mo…

Scroll down to "Devices with Limited Playback Capabilities"

Other than that, the fact you can record FTA and stream practically everything for $79 it's great value either way.

  • +2

Great price for the mighty. If you have someone in the family that still records a lot of FTA TV, this is perfect for it.

  • Can you record SBS on demand and fast foward the adds ?

    • +1

It is not possible to record from the catch-up services. You can record programmes from the regular SBS channels (in fact all FTA channels) and then when playing them back you can fast forward (or skip in 5 minute increments) the ads.

When watching shows 'on demand' through the related catch-up TV app, then you will get ads (if they are shown). You can't fast forward or skip them.

    • You can record SBS FTA (not on-demand) and fast forward the ads.

    • Nah, you'd need to record the show when it's broadcast on FTA to play it back later and skip ads.

  • Thanks, was looking for a second box for another room.
The mighty at least is not painfully slow to navigate like the mini

  • +2

Bought @$99 - very happy with it.
Stated as recond, but was new in sealed box.
Includes 1 free movie & free 30d subscription package after $1 setup payment
    Great value Deal

  • Perfect, I always want to watch the FTA news and miss it, solved an issue for $79. Thank you!

  • -2

Does anyone still record FTA TV ?? Can this skip the ads while recording?

1TB to record up to 585 hours

that's like what 200h of actual content and 385h of ads?

    • +4

I recorded the entire FIFA World Cup on my Fetch Mighty. I can stream the recordings to my iPad, phone or PC on my local network.

The Mighty does do chase play, so consider this situation.

AFL match starts at 1pm. Fetch Mighty starts recording.
You arrive late and start watching the match at 2:30pm, but you start the recording from the beginning. When a goal is scored and an ad is played, you can fast forward the recording. At quarter time or half time you can skip the ads as well.

      • how do you stream from the mighty?

        • I use VLC on my PC. It then finds the Fetch box on the same LAN network and then I can see all my FTA recordings. Clicking on the name starts the stream.

  • Do you actually have to ever connect to the internet or can it simply be used as a PVR?

    • Program guide is updated from internet. So necessary to set up recordings.

      • I have a old topwiz and you don't need internet connection at all for the program guide

        • Most PVR take their EPG from TV signal.

Unplugged the PVR after buying Fetch @$99 months ago - very happy.with it.

Fetch provide their own program guide via internet with some added features like image of program or movie.

    • Internet is required even if you only use it for FTA. There have been reports that if the internet drops out the box becomes unresponsive after a certain amount of time.
