Steam Deck 64GB $710, 256GB $910, 512GB $1,155, 1TB (Modded) $1,115 + Delivery @ Expansys

470

I've been watching StockX, Kogan, Dick Smith, Catch, etc. for the past few weeks and this seems to be the lowest anyone's currently offering and hovering around the lowest overall (so far).

Goods with a customs value of A$1,000 or less are subject to 10% GST at the point of sale. For goods with a value over A$1000, an Import Declaration will need to be filled out, and import duties, taxes and government charges will need to be paid at the border.

64GB - currently in stock
256GB - currently in stock
512GB - ordered on request
1TB (modded) - currently in stock

It's not clear which model is used as the base for the 1TB modded version, presumably the 64GB one. It's also not clear what SSD they use as a replacement, but they sell / advertise alongside the other Steam Deck units the WD SN740, and there's not many 2230 NVME SSDs in 1TB capacity, so a good guess that it's probably that. If you can source a 1TB 2230 NVME SSD from somewhere it's probably cheaper to buy the 64GB version and the SSD and replace it yourself, but if you're not confident to do that or lazy, buying the pre-modded version would be your option.

According to the listing, it may also come with a power adapter. "Please note that many of our devices are import versions and may not come with a local charger. In those cases, a plug adapter will be included in the box."

After reading a lot of so-so feedback on Expansys (particularly around customer service), I was questioning whether to pull the trigger on the 64GB over the weekend as the stock said "ordered on request". This changed to "10+ in stock" this morning, so I took a punt on it. I received the shipping tracking link this evening, and according to Toll tracking, it's already been handed over to Toll in Hong Kong and has been sorted to destination. Your mileage may vary (as may mine given I haven't received it yet).

Shipping was $22 for me, for a total of $732. At that price I figure, for the 64GB model, $399 USD + 10% GST = about $640, add Australia tax to round it to a more likely retail price of $699, and the difference is enough to pull the trigger on it rather than the faff of VPN, US prepaid credit card +fees, reshipper, etc etc etc. or waiting for it to launch locally (whenever that may be).

I never thought I would see the day where I would actually think ‘wow, I would rather deal with Kogan’

Can’t argue the price IS decently cheaper here though 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • +2

      Amen

    • +6

If you're concerned about dealing with this site, I can tell you re: Kogan:

      • Placed order last Friday.
      • Order prepared in the warehouse on Saturday.
      • Collected by AusPost on Sunday.
      • In transit on Monday.
      • Delivered on Tuesday and playing Aperture Desk Job by 3pm.
      • Installing mods and emulators on Wednesday.

Came with a Cygnett 45W charger (2 x USB-A, 2 x USB-C ports). I feel a little silly that I bought a couple of Cygnett chargers in December for some new smartphones and now I've got more chargers than I know what to do with, lol.

      • I also bought mine from kogan (the kogan one not the vchain one) and my orders still stuck at processing since Sunday- bloody aus post

      • kogan direct or Vchain?

        • +1

          Kogan direct.

      • +1

        Came with a Cygnett 45W charger (2 x USB-A, 2 x USB-C ports)

Wow, I feel ripped off now! I bought from one of the Kogan resellers (Tech Tack) and only got an adaptor (which I almost missed and threw away because it was wrapped into a small ball of bubble wrap).

        • How'd you go otherwise with Tech Tack? Nothing to report?
Placed my order a few days ago. Keen as.
Went with them for the ABN/states warranty.

  • +8

I think steam will start selling them here officially. I'd rather wait for that

    • +4

I'll always advocate for official > grey import, but this recent tweet from Steam itself doesn't inspire much confidence. Makes sense why OzBargainers are finally pulling the trigger on deals like this based on that information.

Hope you get yours soon, OP.

      • -3

Some replies to that tweet are pretty funny lol, people saying they have “no choice” but to buy through a reseller like they’re being forced to buy a Steam Deck lol.

        • It’s actually quite sad how warped people’s perspective of what is essential to them now.

Same morons who carry on like they “must” get their kid a PS5 for Christmas.

This year’s economy it’s going to be a reality check for some.

        • +5

whats wrong with wanting a thing and not wanting to wait for it to be sold here "officially" if options are available? I bought mine via stockx in November and have barely put it down in my free time, one of the best tech purchases I've ever made - we Australians don't have a choice if we want one as Valve doesn't like dealing with Australian Consumer Law which is a huge part of the reason why they don't sell it here officially. Its got nothing to do with being "forced to buy", people want it, simple.

          • -8

            @KRiSX:

whats wrong with wanting a thing and not wanting to wait for it to be sold here "officially" if options are available?

The thing that is wrong with it is that Valve isn’t forcing anyone to not buy through a reseller. They are simply advising people to be careful in that tweet, yet people are acting like victims as if they “have no choice” but to buy through a reseller when they actually do have a choice.

we Australians don't have a choice if we want one

Uh, yes you do, it’s called “waiting”, but clearly some people have no patience anymore. “Gimme Steam Deck now! Gimme gimme gimme!”

        • +1

I think it's valid if people really want access to a product, which the company has released in most major markets, but Australia is an after-thought.

It was like trying to buy off Amazon before they opened the Australian store. It was reasonable to wish you had access to Amazon even if you could still "get by" having to purchase from Harvey Norman.

In my particular example my kids want to PC game in a hand-held format. We don't really want them trying to buy or lug around a gaming laptop, and I think the SD out-competes laptops in that price range anyway. My kids are used to playing Switches. So SD is a logical product to aim for and has been available in the US for 12 months now.

I think it's reasonable to be annoyed, same as folks in South America and parts of Asia

          • -4

@jirskyr: It’s might be somewhat reasonable to be annoyed, but it’s not reasonable to act like a victim as if you “have no choice” if you want a Steam Deck, you either buy it through unofficial means, or you wait. Valve’s tweet is simply telling to be careful, yet people are replying like spoilt brats to them.

The way people carry on I wouldn’t be surprised if people at Valve just eyeroll when they think about Australians.

            • +1

@Ghost47: Of course some folks always take it too far, same with anything.

    • They would probably sell them via EB potentially like they did the Steam Link, but then I don't recall Steam selling their controller through them.

        • +2

Even at $89rrp the steam controller was a bargain.

          • +3

@KernelPanic: Those trackpads were ahead of their time. That's why the Deck is the way to go over all other options - trackspads and a killer d-pad.

        • Damn wish I had seen them at $44. My mate got one from the US when they had just released and he was telling me it was his favourite controller because of the customization options.

    • Any information about stockx? They worth dealing with?

      • They're basically like ebay. Except they middleman/authenticate the products…(at least as far as I last knew)
I think with steamdecks you should be fine, but people have successfully sold fake gpus and clothes/sneakers through them. When part of their job is to authenticate stuff.

I doubt there's fake steamdecks out there that would be even slightly difficult to catch though.

        • No warranties right?

          • @DDman7: StockX don't provide warranty theirselves.

"Will an electronic item I buy on StockX be covered by its manufacturer's warranty?
            3/30/2022

Currently, StockX defers to the manufacturer with regard to whether they will consider an electronic purchased on StockX to be eligible for warranty. Please refer to the manufacturer directly regarding product functionality and other product-related questions. At this time, StockX cannot guarantee that a manufacturer's warranty will be honoured for products bought on the site."

      • +2

I would seriously not bother with StockX. Horrific customer support and I'd suggest you may be left without any help if your unit develops a fault. At least with Kogan some resellers have an ABN and a stated year long warranty.
Plus they leaked all my details a few years ago.
I used to be into shoes (their bread and butter) and they're not very customer focused lol.

      • I looked a lot online before pulling the trigger and couldnt find much negative things about them other than the high prices, I only paid like $1020 for the 512 model so even prices wasnt that bad for me.

If people got a faulty product somehow they take returns pretty easily from what I saw and honestly I rather trust this than Kogan, esp since they are asking for like $300 more for the same model.

That being said I receive my model today (ordered on the 9th, pretty good delivery timing) I'll update later

          • -2

@ihuntbargains: yes buying freaking shoes is the same thing, why would I care about non-steam deck shipments and sales?

            • +1

@Freestyle: Are you not aware of how stockx works???
Also I linked a video about someone who sold a "gpu" which was actually a HDD in a gpu box.

The entire idea behind stockx is fees are paid because stockx "authenticates" the goods you're selling.
It could be shoes or a (profanity) rock for all I care, the process is still the same. Seller ships goods to stockx, stockx "authenticate" the goods and then send to buyer.
The fact that not only have fake sneakers managed to be "authenticated" but also a "GPU" that was a HDD in a gpu box shows that they don't(or didnt) even open boxes to authenticate boxes….the whole damn reason you pay the premium for.

              • -2

@ihuntbargains: yes but there is no way you can fake a steam deck, you cant make this shit everywhere and fake the console or hardware. I also received it and its fine, everything is working so far.

Plenty of people bought steam deck in Australia this way and imo this is far more reliable than Kogan, you cant claim Kogan is reliable

                • +4

                  @Freestyle: (profanity) you are dense.

YOU DONT HAVE TO FAKE THE DAMN STEAMDECK.
Did you not read (or watch the linked video) about the gpu example?
They didn't have to sell a "fake gpu", because they packaged a HDD that weighed similar to the GPU and shipped it off.
Stockx are then meant to authenticate it by opening the box and checking the goods are what was sold and are authentic, after that they put an authentication tag or sticker on it and ship it to the buyer.
They didn't even open the box to authenticate it, they just slapped the sticker on it claiming they had…. THATS the issue.

                  • -4

@ihuntbargains: and there hasnt been any reported for the steamdeck itself that I found you dumbass, maybe read instead of using random slur words just to look cool

are you stupid? how many people do you think have imported by this method by now?

And obviously we are doing it because we have disposable income and can afford it if something goes wrong, that will happen because these are UNOFFICIAL SOURCES

get that through your thick head

    • I bought mine from stockx, EU model (it really doesn't matter, power supply is universal 100-240v, just need a travel adapter) and it was an extremely smooth and quick experience

  • +2

The forum posts at the bottom of each listing say that no tracking is given and support don't help. Those don't really inspire much confidence in buying from there but I think that their support might be on holiday cause of CNY. Regardless, I think I'll wait for a official way to get it here in Aus or if I can't wait I'll get a Kogan stock with warranty.

    • Yeah same thoughts.
I've been too keen to wait for Valve's local launch, - the index was brought here over two years after launch.
Valve will supposedly help you with warranty even if you're Aussie but you have to cover shipping. That won't be cheaper then the $70 between this deal and a current Kogan seller with an ABN and printed 12 month warranty.
      I paid the extra.

    • +2

To be fair I think that op jumped the gun on that one - as looks like the link was just delayed

      • +1

Less about their experience and more about the linked feedback. Doesn't hurt to know what you're getting into..

For some reason a deal posted here implies the seller is reliable and some skip the basic research

        • True , takes 5 seconds to bash ‘expansys’ into ozbargain search and see overall bad reception on them. Like I said in the other thread the number of people who don’t do even basic research with an overseas seller is crazy

  • +1

Not desperate enough for something like this to pay 700 from a seller like that.

  • -5

$700 and no warranty no thnx
Awesome price though for those more foolish with their money

  • Geeze at $700 i'm willing to take a punt. Significantly cheaper than Kogan.

    • About $70 after shipping costs.

      • +1

        Just got my shipping notification

  • +2

Well wishe luck. Just bought the 64 GB model and a cheap 1tb m2230 sdd from AliExpress.

    • Do you have a link please? I don't have my Deck yet but looking at pulling the trigger in the next few months and want to have a drive and accessories ready.

        • amazing price but it's PCIE 3.), whereas the sabrent is PCIE 4.0.
I would love to know how your purchase works out. thanks for sharing!!

          • +1

@spinferno: I actually cancelled the Alibaba purchase and bought the sabrent 1tb after reading Loinbreads comment below. Cost 300 bucks but should be worth it. Was shipped after 2 hours.

The steam deck has also been shipped but took like 8 hrs? Tracking number doesn't work but in my experience with DHL, it can take a day for the tracking number to work.

            https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1742808-REG/sabrent_s…

          • +2

@spinferno: It's been bought and used by a lot of people, should work fine. Here's a full review on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wkmf5s/cheap_1tb…

            • +1

@nerdinary: Might go this route, thanks.

              • @Thiefsie: Price seems to be around $186 delivered? I’m wondering how long it’ll take to arrive? I purchased a WD SN520 512GB for $40 from eBay, plan on snapping the thing in half and plugging it into the deck

                • @ZeroX03: Yep thats what I paid. Your method might be a lot better bang for buck. Care to send a link of the item you bought on eBay? I can't see any less than $100. I might cancel (if I can) as I don't think I really need the extra 512GB, especially if I get a larger SD Card also.

The Alibaba links were a bit weird with different speeds reported. The images on the listing show two speeds, and it appears the 512GB versions is faster than the 1TB…?

                  • @Thiefsie: It was a pre owned item and the seller only had one left, sorry!

  • I know they also trade overseas under the same name but this is the seller right?

    https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/expansys

  • +1

You might prefer to perform the 1TB mod yourself, not knowing what SSD is used in this. Some SSDs have higher power consumption and run much hotter than stock. The Sabrent Rocket is pretty well recommended and manufactured with the intention that people will use it in a Steam Deck, I think it consumes ~4W and has very similar thermals to the stock Deck SSDs.

  • +2

Just a note that the 1TB Sabrent Rocket is out of stock everywhere till Feb

  • +4

Hey everyone, my order is currently on its way to Australia via DHL, paid $747 AUD in total. I did indeed jump the gun in purchasing and probably should have researched more, but the massive amounts of forum posts that have gone unanswered (and deleted!) is what made me panic and contact PayPal immediately. Will let everyone know if what I receive tomorrow is the legit Steam Deck or not…lol

    • Thanks.
I also grabbed a 64GB one and the 1TB SSD as well, today. I chose DHL and PayPal.
      My order status is:

      Item Qty
      Ordered Qty Remaining Status
Steam Deck handheld gaming computer (16GB RAM / 64GB eMMc) 1 1 Ordered on request
      Western Digital PC SN740 NVMe SSD Gen 4 x 4 2230 (1TB , Suit for steam Deck , Bulk Pack) 1 1 Expected 3 Days

Note the “ordered on request” and “expected 3 days”even though the website said they have 4 in stock for both.

      • So… I sent them a grumpy email to ask why the items weren't in stock when the website said they were in stock, and 9 hours later got an email saying my order has shipped! Miraculous since there was a wait of 2 days remaining on the SSD..
Anyway DHL also sent a mail saying it's on the way. And it's been picked up. Delivery in <5 days.

    • Any update?

      • +2

Mine is currently ‘Processed at Melbourne’. Most likely it’ll be delivered tomorrow.

        • +1

Ok, if it comes and is legit I'm going to get one myself.

          • @Zidago: I also ordered from expansys without email replies. Had contributed to forum posts as tracking was not functioning.

Several angry emails and abrasive forum posts later, the posts are removed & tracking system fixed.

Fingers crossed the item shows up as it’s with toll & pending transfer from Sydney

  • +1

I ordered last night for $732 and it has been shipped today via Toll Global / GPEX. Tracking says it's been picked up in HK already.

Have also ordered a basic Jsaux dock (v1), some screen protectors and a 1TB 2230 NVME from Alibaba. It's likely they won't ship until after CNY, early Feb.

  • expansys or kogan?

expansys price is good but really hesitating reading about their reputation.

    • If you're asking me, Expansys.

      • +1

thanks but unfortunately 64gb stock out.

  • +3

Mine has made it from HK to Singapore, so that's progress. ETA <2.5 days now.

It does look like you have to poke Expansys to get them to ship on time/correct order status.

And a reminder that it's Lunar New Year now, so many places shut down for a week+ or become very slow.

    • Mine arrived from expansys today.

      I ordered on the 18th

  • +1

Mine arrived this morning from Expansys. Ordered 19th.
Delivered by DHL (They did not ask for signature!)
SSD had been slipped into the Steam Deck Box (naked, in bubblewrap).
    Steam Deck case itself unopened.
Standard US adapter supplied, with converter plug for AU.
(I Prefer the US plug as the UK one is really bulky, with an earth pole.)
They are heavy but balanced, and the finish is really good.
    It's charging and updating now.

  • +2

Steam Deck arrived by Toll delivery today. The box had been opened, and Expansys had added an Australian adaptor for the standard US power plug in the power plug box. That box had been re-sealed it with an Expansys label and the Steam Deck box well taped up along all sides. The Steam Deck itself did not appear to have been opened up and the case still had a Valve tamper-proof tie securing the zip.

I'll be pairing it with a Sandisk Extreme 1TB MicroSD that I'll be picking up from Officeworks today after successfully getting them to price guarantee it down to $165.20 over the phone by directing them to this Catch listing: https://www.catch.com.au/product/sandisk-extreme-micro-sd-1t…

    • +1

Can also confirm mine was opened to include an Australian adaptor with the Expansys label. Steam Deck itself was left untouched.

EDIT: There's also no need to get the Extreme model, as the Steam Deck can only read up to 100MB/s. Save some cash and get the Ultra.

  • For those who bought and got shipping info fairly quickly. Was it listed as in stock or ordered on request?

    • In stock, ordered mine last Tuesday (?), arrived Sunday. 64GB model.

  • I'm getting a little worried.

I ordered on the 18th shortly after this deal was posted and it was marked as sent on the same day via DPEX/Toll.

Initially tracking looked good for the first few days. However there has been no updates in the tracking information since the 21st when it was marked as 'overnight line haul' from HK.

I've contacted Toll and Expansys in the last 24 hours and waiting to hear a response.

    • Well since the 21st mine just says In Transit to Destination (HK).

I'm not concerned yet. It's CNY and cheap AF chinese shipping. Not going to be fast. Maybe it would have been wiser to pony up and go with DHL…

      • I ordered mine with DPEX / Toll shipping and received it yesterday. I was also getting a little worried before it came.

It was shipped on 17th January, with no real updates until the 20th of January - at which point I was able to track it on Toll's website.

        • Ah right - I hadn't tried the Toll website. Tracking there says it's in NSW so not far away now (Melb here).

          • @Thiefsie: I can see my tracking was updated shortly after I made the post. It's now showing it has been received in a depot in NSW.

I'm also in Melbourne - here's hoping we get them before the weekend but with Australia Day tomorrow I think it's more likely we will get them on Monday.

The $79 512GB Kioxia SSD I ordered however isn't going to be shipped until Feb 6 and it's coming from China so I'm not expecting it until late Feb / mid March. I'll have to do with a 256gb sd card until then. I went with this SSD.

            • @studentl0an: Yeh fingers crossed for Friday but I doubt it.

I ordered a 1tb SSD from Alibaba so no idea when that might arrive. I will suffice with MicroSD in the meantime also. I'll likely dual boot Windows when the SSD arrives so have to start from scratch again.

            • +1

@studentl0an: Mine is out for delivery today so looks like I'll get it for the weekend which is handy.

              • @Thiefsie: Nice, have you got yours yet? I just picked my one up! There's major construction work on the road I live on so it wasn't able to be delivered. I was on phone with Toll support and was pretty bummed when told I would need to pickup from the Tullamarine depot on Monday. However during the call I got an SMS that it was sent to a much more local pick up point and went there straight away. Very happy about that.

It all looks to be in good order but I won't be able to turn it on until later tonight or better tomorrow afternoon.

                • @studentl0an: Yes just got mine - Expansys have opened it to put a cheap (but perfectly fine) AC converter plug in the box. Valve seal in-tact. So all good. Shall be fun to muck around with this weekend.

  • Mine arrived and works well. I'm putting in a 1TB SSD now.
No issues with Expansys from my end. Fast shipping and they included an adaptor for the charger. I'm extremely happy.

    • My 64 gig deck and 1 tb sabrent ssd both arrived on the 27th. Not bad at all.

  • Anyone order with "Ordered on request" and have an ETA?

    • +2

Ordered 27th, no ETA as of yet.

      • Yeah I emailed them to say not happy and in 4 hours it said it was ready to ship. See my comments further up.

        • Shot them an email last night for an ETA. Was yours Awaiting Stock/Order On Request at the time you ordered, and did you actually get a response from them, or did they just update the status?

  • So my steam deck arrived the other day but ive just found out that it's been tampered with. I could tell that the bottom two screws on the back had been stripped.

I'm guessing that they were going to mod it but someone accidentally stripped the screws.

Anyways I've requested a refund. Anyone else find that their deck has been tampered with?

    • Was the tamper seal intact?

      • Seal was intact was but refer to reddit post below. I've ordered the 64 gig version from Kogan. I hope to get a refund from expansys within the next 30 days.

I've opened a case with paypal just in case.

Also, I just tried to unscrew the screws and all of them were easily removed except for the bottom two. Don't want to risk stripping them even more than what they already are lol.
