Pfff ,they need to lower the price a lot more for a refurb unit .

    • +16

      I don't think they do.

        You're right

          He's right

    • +1

There's the pro Max for only 7k… Maybe that's more of a bargain hehe

    • +1

I've been a sucker for Apple sales speak recently but they told me that refurb CAN include new units. It may be them trying to offload M1 stock.

  • How long warranty do they offer? (Free, not Apple care+)

Ok I just checked, 1 year? Is that even legal here?

    • +1

Yes, you are still covered by ACL.

For Australian consumers: The rights described in this warranty are in addition to the statutory rights to which you may be entitled under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and other applicable Australian consumer protection laws and regulations. Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law.

True but much more difficult to get support then.

        • much more difficult to get support

Can someone actually confirm that? Ie. has anyone experienced that?

I don't see it being refused help from a company like Apple if they clearly state they respect the law.

          • +1

@pizzaguy: In my experience, they do.

I bought a refurb MBP 16 worth 5.2k in 2020. About 2 months ago, one morning it wouldn’t turn on, completely dead. I took it to an Apple Authorised Repairer, then diagnosed it and the logic board had died, but replaced it under Consumer Law for free. That part alone is worth 4k it’s self. Have a fully working laptop again apart from loosing my data since the SSD is soldered to the logic board. So glad for that as I wasn’t keen on having a 5k paperweight because I was out of warranty and didn’t purchase AppleCare.

            • +2

@SShannonAU: From what you are saying, you had no issues with the warranty.

That's the opposite to the other person's claim from before.

            • +1

@SShannonAU: Exact same experience, logic board failure after 2 years! The service person told me that laptops are covered for 3 years from date of purchase for free repair.

            • @SShannonAU: And as Louis Rossman has said many, many times. chances are its just one pin thats overcooked itself and needs a little resolder (or at worst, replace the small chip) but you wont catch apple attempting that.

          • @pizzaguy: I had random crashes with a refurbished MacBook Pro and got it replaced with a newer version brand new.

            • @Machin: Wow!
How did you manage to convince Apple you have a random crash problem?

    • Apple computers have been unofficially 3 years warranty in Australia for years now.

Apple refurbs are pretty much as good as new. If it wasn't for the refurb specific packaging, you wouldn't really know.

Education Union store is usually just as good a deal on current models. You can't buy older refurb models through that though.

      • +5

That's just the normal warranty Apple gives on new items as well. Apple doesn't treat refurbs any differently.

"We back this quality commitment by including our standard one-year limited warranty with every Apple Certified Refurbished product. You also have the option of getting additional coverage by purchasing AppleCare products.
Our warranty and AppleCare products are in addition to rights provided by consumer law. Learn more about consumer law."

Their refurb warranties are no different from that for new products. You can even buy Apple Care (if you think it's worth it).

        • I have a 2 year on my airpods?

      • +1

Where are these "problems with warranty" coming from?

You're stating it as if you've experienced some Apple-ACCC struggles.

        • No I'm stating having to defer to acc is never as good as real warranty

          • @hamwhisperer: But it seems like a non-existing issue in the context of Apple.

Like, people are saying they get things fixed for free even after the statutory warranty. And that's been my experience with Apple computers too.

And yes, you have at least 2 years warranty on your airpods.

      • The warranty is exactly the same as new. There are no problems.

I’ve had apple replace a logic board on my MacBook after 4 years.

It was a bit of a battle and had to clearly state ACL laws for them to consider it. And it had to be pushed up the chain to be approved.
Originally denied but I pushed it again and they approved the repair but it was part only.

    • Which ACL laws say they need to repair it after 4 years?

      • +1

It's considered a gray area, no specific timeframes, but if it's a significant fault you can argue it.

        • Correct.
Only reason they did was becasue it was $4800 macbook pro, and i argued it should technically last longer than 4 years.
Base model can understand no warranty, but fully upgraded - Grey area.

          • @colt75: Even for the base model you'd still probably be able to argue it under the fact they provide software updates for X years so the device should be capable of lasting that long easily. 4 years isn't much for a Mac, they usually last 10+ easy

      • The bit where is says, 'a reasonable amount of time'…

        Reasonable

For the price point, I think 4 years is still reasonable, for it to be repaired for a major fault as said.

      • A consumer doing a corporations job for them! Oh the delights

  • I thought only iPhones/iPads get new a shell & battery as part of Apple's refurb program, not Macbooks?

    • +3

I’ve bought about 15+ refurb MacBook Pro/Air over the last few years. All literally 100% new in appearance. I actually like that they’ve been checked by a human rather than just rolling off the conveyer belt.

Additionally, and completely anecdotal of course, I’ve had a higher failure rate with the MacBooks I’ve purchased new.

Other manufacturers refurbs there’s a case to be cautious. Not so for Apple IMHO.

Personally I’m ecstatic about the above deal given how crazy their pricing has been the last few years.

      • What about battery?
Have you ever checked battery cycles of any of these 15+ Refurb MacBooks?

        • +1

Yes, checked many of them. Batteries are always 1-2 cycles, ie new.

  • +1

    Awesome deal.

I can't get over the fact that extra 512gb storage (and slightly faster silicon) is +$600… I guess a portable SSD makes more sense in this situation.

    • +1

Absolutely. Base model will better retain its value too

  • +1

Can you buy these products with apple gift cards.

    • I believe you can, I briefly saw something in the payments page. Could be wrong though….

  • +3

Thanks OP, after deliberating whether to go back to Windows machines thanks to the price increases, you've just saved me from going to the dark side.

First time buying refurbished Apple products but I've now pulled the trigger on a refurbished Macbook Pro 14 M1 16Gb RAM with 512Gb SSD base model for $2299.

  • I wonder how many of these are actually refurbs, given Apple pretty much had to have enough new stock to cover Xmas, and then needing to practically stop selling them immediately once 2013 came around.

  • -1

Ugh, I was waiting for upped cashreward following the new m2 release, but now that it’s been posted, I better buy now before they all get ozB’d 😩

  • Hmmm to buy a 21 MBP M1 14 with upgraded storage to 1TB for $2550 or to buy a 23 MBP M2 14 for $2900 education pricing. Decisions.

    • thats really close to m2 one; also the m2 one gets free airpods

  • +1

It is a killer deal at this price, I just placed an order for m1 pro 14 yesterday

    I considered these though
    - $2299 Macbook pro 14 M1 14: 8/14 cores, 16/512
    - $2469 (stu discount) Macbook Air M2 : M2 8/10 cores, 16/512, free airpods
    - $2959 (stu discount) Macbook pro 14 M2 14: 10/16 cores, 16/512, free airpods
    - $1849 (stu discount) Mac mini M2 pro 10/16 cores 16/512 + $250 for apple mouse/keyboard

    Refurb is incredible bang for buck all things considered and comes with one year warranty same as brand new;
In the end of the day, its electronics, may work for 15 years; or might just go wrong next day of warranty period even for a new one.
