  • Remember to full unwind if you are using a big load. Don't wanna burn your house down.

    • Have any leads ignited because they were wound? I get the theory, but practice?

      • It takes time for heat to build up for it to actually catch on fire. But like people thinking well its never caught fire in the short amount of time i have had it plugged in. So it should be fine to leave it plugged in coiled up. Thats when it does catch on fire and burn the house down.

Take say a xmas tree plugged in via an uncoiled extension lead. Left on overnight.

You don't have to take my word for it. Just ask any fire fighter. They will tell its not a good idea.

        • Just buy some marshmallows too with this

        • Yes I get the theory but have there been any fire events in Australia in say the last 10 years where this has occurred? The point is, for heat to build up it needs to pull a lot of amps, possibly more than the cable is really rated for. I highly doubt xmas tree lights at 5w will do any damage.

          • @bargainshooter: Column heater then?

Just look at any appliance from something as small as a toaster oven to as big as an oil heater.

It always says uncoil wire before plugging in and using.

            Same goes for extension leads.

If there was no risk they wouldn't be putting it on there.

            • @xoom: Yeah it's called a disclaimer to avoid legal liability. There's risk everywhere but the reason this is printed is to protect the manufacturer, not the user. Anyway, yes a column heater drawing 2400w could be an issue and if run for hours at that wattage it could heat the cable enough to melt it. But my kettle has a coiled cable tidy under the base. It's been coiled twice around for about 5 years. Runs at 2400w. Multiple times per day.

@bargainshooter: Thats why extension lead maker put that warning on because you just never know.

Someone might just use it on a column heater and leave it on over night coiled up.

It could very well be to avoid legal liability. End of the day would you want to risk any of it either way?

I don't want a company liable over a faulty product get away with anything because i didn't follow their disclaimer.

    • Isn’t a big load is when had a curry last night and next morning you dump a big load and will certainly burn the house down
