phew, now I can refund that oceanic engineer from the oil rig who paid $1000 too much for the computer I sold through ebay without paying those WU fees.

Awesome! Now I can maximise my inheritance from my Nigerian Prince charming, without paying those pesky WU fees.

You'd be surprised. Generally the people who use these services in Australia are South-East Asian (Indian, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc) then some African and Europeans if I recall correctly. Sending money back home to families of course. I'm sure there are probably better ways to do it, but yeah, a lot of people do use these products.

      • and a ton of arab countries as well… lol
        "UAE exchange" does a better job IMHO…. I don't like WU !

      • +1

to correct you South East Asian is not Indian and Chinese. South East Asian is country consists of ASEAN country such as Indonesia, Malaysia, SIngapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Philiphines and East Timor.

        • Thanks, I thought I might of got that wrong.

Do you know of a cheaper fee than $9.95 to send funds to China by W.U., because I don't.
And I would really like to hear from anyone who does.
Some have a better exchange rate, but a much higher fee - typically $25.

    • From your previous question I believe you are asking who in Australia uses WU to transfer money domestically… Hmmm let me think…

    • +2

      I use Western Union.
Although people associate western union with nigerian scams, it is actually a legitimate and cost effective way of transferring funds overseas.
I transfer money with Western Union to my supplier in China many times. The usual fee is $18 which is cheaper compared to ANZ bank TT transfer which is $32.

seriously guys. DO NOT use western union. I had my $137 stolen by WU two years ago.
I transferred the money to a friend overseas, two days later WU told me the money didn't get through and promised to refund to the bank account I used for the transaction. Two weeks on, i had not received the money, so i phoned WU, one of the rep picked up crossed check my bank details and told the money had been refunded already. I asked them to prove it but they said due to privacy protection they could not provide any paper/letter. I waited another week, the money still wasn't in. So I went to see my bank (westpac), westpac said they were unable to track the money, if the money had been refunded, it'd show up in my statement.

Just one story i'd like to share with you guys.

    • I've sent dozens of WU transfers to some of the doggiest(spell?) places on Earth for a charity and have never had an issue (eg. Guinea (West Africa), Liberia (West Africa), Cambodia, Philippines, Laos, Vietnam, etc).

They are completely reliable and dependable and in fact I've had less trouble with them compared with my banks over the years. For smaller amounts they are also often cheaper than the banks depending on the destination and also less hassle and quicker than TT's.

I have used NAB and ANZ to transfer money and they have no fees.

This isn't a bargain, its normal for banks not to charge fees for transfers.

    • this is not a bank, its a money exchange agency, HUGE difference…LOL

    • It is actually NORMAL for banks to charge fees for international mponey transfer which is what Western Union is designed for.
Can you please tell me how I can use my ANZ bank account to do an internation TT transfer for free? because every time I've done it it costs $32.

    • Anz charge about $25 per transfer and the currency exchange rate also fills their pocket with a lot more of your money

I just come in to read some Nigeria news.

  • Isn't the Nigerian price wealthy enough already?

  • I prefer to use MoneyGram, transfer fee is cheaper and it is available everywhere

People who are negging and posting irrelevant posts about Nigerian scams are missing the point.

Western Union is a legitimate service used by many people to transfer money overseas and it more convenient than most other money transfer alternatives.

  • You have got to luv those Nigerian scam jokes but you'd be surprised how many people still fall for them. anyway ref "Pay with your with your Visa® or MasterCard® (Australia bank-issued cards only) and the money can be deposited into your receiver’s bank account in maximum 3 bank business days." Has anyone tried this and has it been treated as a cash advance from their credit card issuer or as a purchase? if they offer a good exchange rate it might be a good way to earn reward points on the cc if you send the money to your own bank account overseas. Its not very clear i was under the impression that this fee free offer was for domestic transfers but that wouldn't make much sense right? anyway you would be surprised by how many non tech savvy people use Western union. just go to any Aust post office on a payday i.e late Friday arvo and see. id personally shop around for the best rate taking into account transfer fees. note amex only charge $10 i think or its free if you have a platinum charge card and you earn MR points too. Also Citibank send to about 25 countries free online but thier xrate is on the lower end. Or get yourself and or a relative overseas either a citibank visa debit card or a 28 degrees card and avoid the fees for life. Top up the account here and they or you withdraw funds overseas. Just open a joint account and get two cards to withdraw from any ATM then post one but only activate it once they receive it in the mail.

    • Has anyone tried this and has it been treated as a cash advance from their credit card issuer or as a purchase?

WU transfers are classed as cash advances (not purchases) so make sure you use your Debit Card or have credit balance on your credit card.

anyway you would be surprised by how many non tech savvy people use Western union

Nothing to do with being tech savvy or not. Many people find WU cheaper, quicker and less hassle, and it's VERY RELIABLE for sending cash to many destinations worldwide and has far more cash pick up points than any other service out there.

  • Good Question Camelgrass "Has anyone tried this and has it been treated as a cash advance from their credit card issuer or as a purchase"
I send last month $350 + $15 as service charge from my master card and bank only charged my $365 in my statement ..no any cash advance ..usually i go to post and send by cash or debit card but first time i send online with mastercard..i was also worried about cash advance charged.

edit** may be i got no charged bcz i have mastercard platinum but not sure how they charge for western union tranjection via normal credit card.

    • Thanks ketanchoksi for answering my question about the cash advance fee. Do you mind telling me who is the mastercard platinum issuer?

    • no any cash advance.

Maybe no cash advance fee because of platinum card but what about the interest that may be charged as occurs on normal cash advance transactions?

When you say "statement" is that your usual monthly statement issued by your card issuer or just a transaction record? If it's only a transaction record then the interest normally charged for cash advances on credit cards (in this case WU) may not have appeared on your records yet.

I have used 28 Degrees Card for a WU transaction and was charged interest from day one like what happens with normal cash advances. I even called them and they confirmed a WU transaction is treated the same as a cash advance.

I find it odd that different card issuers would class WU transactions in different ways. Maybe the difference here is whether your WU transaction is meant for cash pickup at the other end or sent to a bank account.

    • $15 as service charge

I believe that is your banks'/credit card issuer's name for cash advance fee. Otherwise, why would they charge it? Do you get charged $15 everytime you use your credit card?

    Interesting insight into "Nigerian scams":
    http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/428151/why_nigerian_…

  • Hi,
I have Commanwealth platinum master card and $15 was money transfer fees from Westernunion always when you send money online or from post via cash/debit card . No extra charge from bank.

    Ketan
edit…i checked monthly statement again and there is no intrest as cash advance ….there is no any cash advance entry or interest. statement looks like this..

trajection ——-Jul Westernunion Sydney NSW 365.00

    End of statement
Interest charged on purchases Purchase Rate 20.490% Daily Rate 0.05614% 0.00
Interest charged on cash advances Cash Advance Rate 21.490% Daily Rate 0.05888% 0.00

So charge is 0.0. from comm bank.

It was cash pickup at other end and got money in local currency in about 10 mins.
