This one or the black laser one?
    What’s the difference

    • +5

If you're referring to the Amazon Listing; the stainless is 'Hex' while the black-laser is 'Torx'.

If you're comparing Stainless vs Black-Laser (Black Oxide Coated):

      • Stainless is less prone to rust but a softer metal.
      • Black-laser is more prone to rust but a harder metal (good for high torque situation).
      • +1

Apparently, Wera uses a vacuum ice-hardening process on the stainless tools, but I can't find any hardness numbers.

You should ideally use stainless keys in stainless fasteners to prevent corrosion from cross-contamination of metals. Probably only an issue under extreme circumstances though.

  • What's the difference between this and a $29 set? https://www.amazon.com.au/18PCS-Allen-Wrench-Metric-Imperial…

    • quality of material and shape/ergonomics

if you don't use this tool often and/or in heavy duty applications then cheaper one is fine

Wera is the premium brand and that sets costs around 90 dollars in store in AU with rare discounts.
The difference is the precision of machining on the balls on the end. So you will be able to turn them while the tool is at more of an angle, making more screws accessible and less likely. The precision of the non ball end and the shape is also more precise and complex, but you are less likely to notice it.
The insulation vs plastc dip set is valuable in some electrical applications. But for me, I found the thick insulation on this wera set makes it impossible to reach in some holes. (Lots of screw holes are just wide enough for the screw)
I find these ones more versatile. https://www.amazon.com.au/Wera-Hex-Plus-Stainless-Ball-1-5-1…
      I have both.

Thanks OP, I borrowed a set of these from a family member and somehow managed to misplace them.

    • Thanks for the reminder, no excuse to not to buy me that replacement set.

I bought a set of these last year and I'm now buying another one so I can throw out anything non-Wera.

  • Is "color" variant (I assume plastic sleeves) better than raw stainless steel ones?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B000VCZQ74/

    • +1

For anybody that just wants colour to their tools (e.g. allen keys, spanners, or anything for that matter), I recommend just slapping on some paint with some acrylic paint pens.

    • I have this set and the stainless one linked below. And I find I often can't use the coloured one because the insulation is very thick and doesn't fit into a lot of holes. ALso when you are using them at awkard angles, the insulation gets damaged from grinding against other components. So your cool tools end up looking ratty pretty fast. https://www.amazon.com.au/Wera-Hex-Plus-Stainless-Ball-1-5-1…

  • Any thoughts on this vs Bondhus for $40? Painted vs plastic sleeve would mean a little more clearance but don't do enough mechanical work to know if that'll make any real world difference.

    Wera 950/9 Hex-Plus Multicolor HF 1 Hex-Plus HF Black Laser Metric 1 L-Key Set with Holding Function 9 Pieces, 9 Pieces, 4013288188403 https://amzn.asia/d/5lPWLzB

I purchased for the same price a few days back.

    • Black vs stainless and no ball bearing on the ones from this deal from what I can tell.

    • I bought the hf because of the detent. It's not bad, the detent hasn't been overly advantageous to have, but they sure do look real cool.

  • I noticed Amazon technical details says "1 Lithium Ion batteries required."
    Interesting.

Why no 7mm? Some Mazda brakes need a 7mm.
