PlayStation 3 40GB Preowned $128 @ EB Games + Delivery or Pickup Instore

650

EB Games have preowned Playstation 3 40GB of the older fatter model for $128.

Of course you can get new ones for around $250 now.

Not exactly sure on all the differences with the models, but the old model seemed to work the same as the newer 'slim' ones when I've compared consoles with mates.

As always, the 40GB drive can always be changed with another 2.5" drive, so perfect for all of you who have spare drives lying around after upgrading with an SSD!

Can be picked up from instore, or delivered for an additional $9.22 for metropolitan Sydney.

EDIT: After reading the Wii preowned offer, should only be 3 month warranty which isn't too good! :(

Sounds like a reasonable price to pay, considering that it is both a gaming console and a Blu-ray player.

  • EB can be touch and go with pre owned consoles, but thier customer service crew is really good, so I wouldnt worry too much, if its a dodgy console you will probably find out within 3 months

  • Does it play ps2 games? If so sounds like a pretty good deal (especially considering ps2s are still like $78 at my local EB…)

    • +1

I think only the 60GB that was first released does.

      • +1

        true fact

      • 60GB and the 20GB Japanese models.

      • And also the US 80gb MotorStorm PS3.

    • +1

No, but it's supposed to play most PS1 titles.

        • +6

Just because a game is slightly old, it doesn't mean it's not worth playing.

        • +1

there are plenty of ps1 and ps2 games worth playing, eg. Metal Gear solid (the first, not included in hd collection) the persona series, kingdom hearts etc.

        • Tekken 3, Final Fantasy 7.8, Chrono Cross, Tenchu: Stealth Assasin (one of my faves), Bushido Blade, Abes Oddysee, Tony Hawk, Cool Boarders.

          Yes. And Yes.

can you even the name of ps1 game? if so would you play it? or for that matter a ps3 game… ps4 >should be coming out in like 2 years it's been out for like 8 why on earth is there still ps2 >games on the market?

Because some old games are so much better than AAA titles in recent years.

        • +1

Final Fantasy 10, Project Zero Crimson Butterfly, Star Ocean Till The End of Time, Valkyrie Profile, Soul Calibur 2, Zone of the Enders the Second Runner :D

          and alot more :)

ANY PS3 can play PS1 discs.

        • +2

          What? Since when?

Edit: OMFG, considering I have so many PS1 games I can't believe I didn't know this.

Just tested with Breath of Fire III…fucking DERP

        • Since always.

        • ANY PS3 can play PS1 discs.

My point wasn't that ANY PS3 could play PS1 titles, it was that it could play MOST PS1 titles. There are problems with playing a few of them in backward compatibility mode. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_backward_…
Mainly bugs and graphic corruption, but some won't run, e.g. Rush Down

    • -1

Non-Australian users are free to jailbreak it to run PS2 games.

If you live in Australia, jailbreaking a PS3 is not legal.

  • $100 more for a new one

you get a 2nd hand controller too?

  • Aside from using more power than current models, the main shortcoming of the older models for me was the lack of control signals over HDMI. The newer ones will turn your TV on and off for example, whereas the older ones won't.

    • mine works fine

  • +3

The older phat models are more prone to the infamous yellow light of death. There was something cheap that sony used in the older models that caused the YLOD after years of use. YLOD will cost you more to fix than the value of the second hand machine. I can't remember the exact details, it been a while since my old phat ps3 died…

Not saying these ps3s will die, but just a warning to those interested

I'd just pay a little more for a slim model.

    • -1

If you keep it in a well ventilated and clean (dust free) area you'll be fine.

      • +3

WRONG! Its a design flaw. I had one die and im very careful with anything I own. Also my sister and brother in-law both got YLOD :(

        • +1

I've been using a fat 40GB model for over a year to run CFW off, I keep it in an open TV cabinet (no walls) and vacuum around it regularly - never had a problem.

      • dust free areas don't really exist in homes. Dust is everywhere

most people will keep their PS3, XBox etc in an entertainment unit which attract heaps of dust, especially behind the unit

        • +1

I think you're taking "dust free" a bit too literally - all I'm saying is keep the area clean and vacuum around it regularly, and most importantly don't keep it on the floor.

        • +1

The issue I'm talking about isn't a dust issue. Its an excellerated wear and tear issue due to Sony trying to cut costs on the earlier models. Mine lasted a good 5+ years till I encountered the issue.

      • +1

Alas, I wish that were true. I did all the above, and my 60GB PS3 expired at the beginning of this year.

    • +1

To be honest, ive lost 2 slim ps3's to the ylod. Whilst a friend has had his since the release of the consle, only needing a replacement for is drive since he keeps the unit sideways.

    • I bought phat 40GB in 2008 (GT5 Prologue version). Still running strong until now. I also have replached the HDD to 500GB and so far so good.

    • yep my old fat one got ylod and it was a 40gb model, oh and the ventilation thing is also wrong I never had it in a cabinet it was always out on its own, so if you own a fat ps3 it will ylod. My brother has all the gaming systems and basically just used the ps3 for mostly exclusive games as he gets most games on pc and it took about 4 years for his to ylod, so I believe a use thing.

      • I can concur with this. I have the older phat first generation PS3 (backwards compatible one) and still running knocks on wood I didn't put it in a dust-free area, although I try to make sure the ventilation holes are clear and left it off when I'm not playing (not on standby—mainly because these phat models are electricity guzzlers). If I leave it off for long without playing I popped a home-made dust jacket over it (or a big tea towel) just to avoid the dust buildup. From various reviews, I thought YLOD issues has mostly been caused by the CPU overheating after overlong gameplay? Anyhow, I play seven hours a week max an hour or two a day, that's probably why it's still going.

  • Bought, thanks very much OP.

Use the code EDGE for free shipping…

    • They blocked that code

    • doesnt work mate.

    • The code "edge" for free shipping worked for me! I did process the sale via guest
129 is pretty good overall fingers crossed I get a good unit

  • +1

cheap! happy I sold mine for $200 a few months ago, preferred it to the slim models though.

  • +6

If they do only come with 3 months warranty, then don't go anywhere near these, trust me. It's not a matter of if it'll get the YLOD, it's when.

Spend an extra $100 and get a brand new slim.

    • Couldn't agree more!

    • Yep ticking time bomb. Most likely why they have been traded

  • +1

Still prefer the old 40gb phat instead of my current 120gb slim. was a lot quieter (and i prefer the touch sensitive buttons) i did have to change the laser once but after that kept going strong.

  • -1

Keep in mind the new Super Slim model is rumoured to be released soon… http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57472364-1/sony-readying…

    • -1

Yep and wait for the YLOD issues with the super slims overheating when they come out. NEVER buy the first model of any costly product, cars , electronics, partners…My advice is don't buy the first model second hand either.

      • 'costly' is very subjective in this case.

  • -5

    I dont recommend getting this.

    (anectodal evidence coming up…)

I had this model for almost 3 years, taking care of it. Making sure its cool, properly ventilated, etc. Before the 3 year mark it just died (blu-ray drive died and then YLOD), it was under extended warranty so I got a replacement (losing all my save data).

I got a replacement 2 weeks later and then it promptly died after 1 afternoon of 'test playthrough' (using MW2). I got another replacement 2 weeks later, and its been fine (but I only use it for light gaming. but with extended warranty over I know its just a matter of time.

Head over to neogaf and see 'My PS3 has died and I lived to tell about it', lots of posts there as well. That's enough for me to distance myself with anything Sony related. Inferior built, and not build to last. If you must get a PS3, get the latest model, and get an extended warranty.

    • +9

And for every person that has a story like yours, there is another who has had their original launch PS3 operating till now, with no issues. It's the same with every electronic device produced in the modern era because of the complexity of everything working together - sometimes you WILL get a dud.

      • -6

Awesome 'it just breaks' reasoning bro.

        • +2

It's funny how almost no one admits to being negligent about the care of their gaming systems

      • +1

Just for statistics, I have had 3 Phats, all three YLOD due to CPU/GPU Solder defects.

    • -2

Sony are not as good as they used to be…that's 197x~199x!

  • I have both the fat and the slim. I didn't buy them (Sony TV redemption offers). I've only used the fat one (over 3 years) and have never had a problem with it.

Everyone has a different story. :)

  • +2

I think it's a great deal. I own 2 ps3's, a 40gb fat one that I've had for around 3-4 years (with 0 problems) and a slim with a 500gb hard drive in it. For anyone looking for a streaming device or a blu ray player I would personally get this deal. $130 for a blu ray player, streaming device, tv recorder, music video player, a heap of tv vod apps and hundreds of ps games. What other device can do that for the price? Comes with 3 months warranty, hopefully any problems will occur in that time if they do happen.

  • +2

I've owned a launch 60GB PS3 and have never encountered any problems. Everyones experience with PS3's will be different, but the % that do YLOD are very low.

  • +1

original ps3 still looks the best

  • what's system version? any chance 3.55?

    • I reckon you'd have to go to individual stores and ask them - you never know, might get lucky and find one ;)

    • could just downgrade them to be sure.

  • online orders taken off….have to go in-store to get 1 now. bummer.

on another note, if EB states warranty is 3 months….won't we have Statutory warranty available as a recourse after the 3 month period?

    • Not sure considering it's a relatively old 'preowned product'. I think it only applies to new purchases.

    • No, not on 2nd hand goods.

  • Note that the old models use about 50% more power than the newer Slim unit:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3_Hardware#Form_and_power_con…

Also keep in mind PS3 cannot play .mkv files from USB.

    • mkv2vob free program just for ps3 mkv conversion, 1 click process.

    Re: YLOD,
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Reliability

To quote wikipedia, "According to Ars Technica, the number of PlayStation 3 consoles that have experienced failure is well within the normal failure rates in the consumer electronics industry" … note: the figure is about 10%

I think the price is good, but i'd prefer to pay $250 for a new one than $128 for a smaller capacity, second hand one. I won't mark this as a no deal, but I won't mark it as a deal either.

    • +2

I agree that the YLOD will not likely appear within the warranty period, or even within a couple years of purchase…but these are much older, so I think my warning is valid.

Plus that same Ars Techinca says the xbox 360 RROD failure rate was only 1% higher than the normal industry failure average, and we all know how bad that was…

My NES and SNES still works a treat…maybe we expect more from consoles…maybe i'm arguing for arguing sake…maybe i'm bored lol

  • are these older versions more likely to scratch your games? i played once on my friends PS3 and it made a circular scratches on my disc…

  • We secure ours for my father-in-law, had to order from the warehouse but who cares. I actually have this model, no it doesn't scratch discs, no it hasn't had the YLOD and I've had it since it was new.

This is a good buy, if you look around you could easily get a 250gb hdd and keep the cost under a new one. We picked up GT5 for $23 to boot very happy

  • +3

Sweet as! Picked this up today and it came with a 160gb drive already installed by the previous owner. Loving it.

  • Can I install a 750Gb HDD into this?

    • +1

It will take most 5400rpm 2.5" drives, so yes. People have had most success with Seagate and Hitachi drives.

  • use "edge" as coupon code for free shipping working 4.09pm 23/07

  • Went to Castle Towers today. They said they were all out.

  • +1

    Miranda has 1 80gb left…. $148. … I bought one…. make sure ask to a genuine controller…

    • What about other stores in nsw? Im going to grab 1 tomorrow

      • +1

mine keeps turning off by itself every 30 mins or so…. not good

        • I had a similar problem on a newish 120GB slim. I googled for a solution and found that it was a current limit problem on the power supply. There is a little potentiometer on the power supply (need to dismantle)that needed a little tweak and been fine for 6 months now. Common problem apparently. If you only just bought it I would return it but otherwise this might worth trying.
