In the pics I can’t see the hdmi output. Is it actually there?

    • +2

Descriptions must be wrong. There isn't a VGA on these either.

      • +1

Some models have an optional slot for a 3rd video output, typically DisplayPort or VGA.

      • +4

I've bought a bunch of stuff from those guys, and they are cheap, but always getting the descriptions wrong.
You need to double-check everything, and still might get the wrong item and need to send it back.
        No dishonesty, just laziness.

        • What item did they get wrong for you?

          • +1

@Homr: A laptop that was supposed to have touch-screen and other features. The one I got was good, but not what I needed. And not a case of sending the wrong item, but a slap-dash job on the listing, which they keep doing. And they did not even respond to my emails.

At the end of the day, its just an annoyance. I'm not using them for mission critical next-day orders :-)

    • It doesn't matter - you can already use an Active DisplayPort to HDMI cable from either of the two DisplayPort outputs.

    • +1

Mine came with a HDMI output for reference

  • wtf, I just put an order for this Dell one

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/754985

is this better?? 9600 vs 9500?

    • i5 9600 is better.

      • Should I cancel the dell and get this one?? Is it possible to cancel from ebay?

        • +6

It's not better enough to go through that, they are like 98% the same.

          • +1

@Jimbuscus: I already cancelled, now i want to order the dell again :(

I actually like dell more than HP

            • @Homr: Message the guy and say you cancelled by mistake

              • +1

@hoosier daddy: Thanks, I just messaged him saying to follow through the order and not cancel. Hope it works

I might need to stop browsing ozbargain to stop the angst

                • +3

@Homr: Look, if you do miss out, and he cancels it, and both the HP and Dell sell out before you can re-order, I am willing to bet that within 1 or 2 weeks this deal will just appear again. I bought the Dell 7060 deal last week, and today the deal is the 7070. Dont stress about it

      • Even 9th vs 8th gen is only marginally better. Not worth any hassle.

    • It will be marginally better and you probably won't notice it with normal use. The HP has wifi though

      • Dell has Wifi too doesn't it?

        • +2

Yes you are right. Ignore me. The HP is a tad better, but is ugly as fck compared to the Dell. I'd go Dell purely on the looks tbh

          • @hoosier daddy: I just cancelled my Dell Order but it says seller will contact me by 8th Feb

          • +1

@hoosier daddy: Glad I'm not the only one who rejects HP on the grounds of ugliness :-)

        • +2

I bought one of these a few months back from these guys (older processor, same G3 Micro case); wifi was listed in the title, description and the antenna visible in the photos but it didn’t have wifi installed when it arrived.
Messaged them thinking it must’ve been a mistake and received a pretty condescending reply stating it simply meant it was ‘wifi compatible’ and I needed to purchase a wifi adapter myself. Easy enough but fairly annoying.
Also, might be obvious to most, but for me this was the first computer I’ve ever owned to not have Bluetooth built in.

          • @georgecheung: Yup was some issues with missing specs in the last 8500t 7060 deal as well.

Might be best to message before purchase to confirm exactly what is supposed to be in these machines.

  • +10

It feels like Homr's profile picture is doing a good job conveying the angst he is experiencing comparing this HP vs the Dell he just purchased

  • +5

This is actually a pretty sweet time to be picking up an ex-lease desktop, as many will have sat largely unused for two years during WFH.

    • +2

This is fact. I bought one of the Optiplex 7060 from last weeks deal, did a scan of the ssd inside, it only shows 800 "power on hours", thats nothing!

  • Is this a 9600 or 9600T?

    • +1

      i5-9600T TDP is 35W while i5-9600 TDP is 65W, hence, i5-9600.

      • +2

is the listing in the ebay wrong?

most of these micro pc all have a T in the cpu model vs the SFF models

        • +1

          Thats why I'm asking.
Not that I'm heaps experienced with these or anything like that but I've never seen a micro that's not a laptop processor.

          • +1

@h0mbre: the ones I've seen when opened use laptop CPUs due to temperature and space for cooling and keeping noise down in the office….. we had heaps in the office where I worked before….. surprised this one claims 65w ????

            • @garage sale: So this will come with a 9600T?

            • +1

@garage sale: These most certainly come in a 65w variant. I've had one with an i7-7700 65w previously and it came with a 90w brick. Normal chips and T chips are both the same socket.

            • @garage sale: Also, 'T' chips are NOT laptop chips. Laptop chips are soldered. None of the Dell / HP / Lenovo desktops in this form factor use laptop chips.

  • Could you play any games on this?
    Like league?

  • +3

    I already have 3 micro pcs i can’t stop buying these 😂

    • +1

What do u use it for??

  • Are these vPro enabled?

  • +3

Here is a USB ports comparision between EliteDesk 800 G5 DM and OpiPlex 7070 Micro

EliteDesk 800 G5 Desktop Mini (DM)

    Front:

    • 1x USB-C Gen 2 (10Gbps) port with fast charging
    • 1x USB-A Gen 2 (10Gbps) port
    • 1x USB-A Gen 1 (5Gbps) port with charging

    Rear:

    • 2x USB-A Gen 2 (10Gbps) ports
    • 2x USB-A Gen 1 (5Gbps) ports

    OptiPlex 7070 Micro

    Front:

    • 1x USB-C Gen 2 (10Gbps) port with fast charging
    • 1x USB-A Gen 1 (5Gbps) port with charging

    Rear:

    • 2x USB-A Gen 2 (10Gbps) ports
    • 1x USB-A Gen 1 (5Gbps) port with charging
    • 1x USB-A Gen 1 (5Gbps) port
    • so HP has more ports?

      • One more USB-A Gen 2 port on the front.

        • +2

and HP has 3.1 vs dell 3.0 GHZ cpu

so from value point of view (since both are same price)
          HP one is better.

that one extra USB in the front is more useful for daily usage than the slight increase in cpu speed (which is nice bonus but won't be too noticeable)

From the looks, Dell design looks nicer..

this is a tough dilemma decision.

  • This is my work pc (government). Runs well even with all the security bloatware running from the IT department. I haven't had any issues with it over the last 2 years with it

  • I want to have a micro PC to run PLEX is this remotely viable? As in energy rating and being able to run at least 2 1080p streams?

I know a NAS is infinitely better but it is double to triple this price.

    • +1

yes it can run plex, not sure if it can do 2 x 1080p stream
but it can do 4k transcoding.

    • +1

I run Plex on half the level CPU fine.

    • +1

If you have Plex Pass (i.e. to enable hardware transcoding) then the Intel QuickSync on basically any CPU from 7th Gen onwards will do several 1080p streams concurrently. It's software transcoding where this really becomes a bottleneck, and only really when you're transcoding the HEVC format.

      • Why do you even need to transcode at all ? Surely everything can just play the native streams today ?

    • What is PLEX?

    • I use a dell Optiplex 7060 with hw transcode offload enabled. I can do two 4K streams withiut the cpu being bothered.

  • Will this be powerful enough to transcode 4K for jellyfin?

    • Yes

    • Yes, but only if HW transcoding.

      • May you please explain? Noob here

        • +3

There are lots of variables when it comes to transcoding: the media format/codec, resolution, software/hardware, etc.

For this specific question, however, most 4K content that is self-hosted comes in a HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding) format, which is very highly compressed. Software transcoding means your CPU's cores will be doing all of the work… and for a CPU it's quite a lot of work. Hardware transcoding / hardware acceleration enables a key component of the CPU whose sole purpose is to process media like this - and will do it far more efficiently.

Sorry if I explained it poorly, but yeah it's basically utilising hardware that was designed to do that specific task and do it well.

          • @wellzi: Thank you for the detailed explanation! 🤙

    • Same question just above, but do you actually need to transcode ? Your playback devices can probably just play the 4K video with no issue unless they're very old.

  • +1

So can this support 3 displays? Ideally I'd like one that can do so

  • Anyone know what type of SSD is inside? Can it fit 2?

    • from previous dell post, it is M2 slot SSD (most likely sata M2), but no idea what could be inside until you open it.
also it is mention you can add a sata SSD as well.

      • But this is HP?

        • According to the specs I found, I think it has both NVME and SATA ports as well

    • This will have an NVMe and SATA, so yes you could have 2 x SSD in there.

These will normally come with an NVMe SSD from factory.

    • From their datasheet

      Expansion slots 1 M.2 2230; 2 M.2 2230/2280 (1 M.2 slot for WLAN and 2 M.2 2230/2280 slot for storage.)

      Drive Bays One 2.5" HDD

Hence, 2x M.2 slots for storage and 1x 2.5 SATA.

And, there is a note on their specifications

SATA 2.5” internal storage drive cannot be selected if 2nd M.2, discrete graphic card, or 95W processor is selected.

      Hence, you can either have (2x M.2 SSD) or (1x M.2 SSD + 1x 2.5" SSD).

  • what sort of games and resolution is playable on these type of machines?

    • I wouldn't be playing games on this thing. It's not what it was built for.

There's no dedicated GPU and the cooling solution is VERY limited.

      Best look for something else.

      • +1

        despite those points,

just curious what sort of games and resolution would be playable on this.

        • Older titles, and some Esports (Dota, CSGO, Fortnite) with a mixture of 720/1080p low settings depending on the game, though you will probably still experience some drops etc. Minecraft should run well enough

        • Yeah fair call, it's still a valid question you've asked.

I would also look up gaming performance based on the processor only, as that is what will be doing all the processing (given a lack of a dedicated GPU). To Callum's point, it would be older title things like CSS/CSGO, DOTA, League of Legends, Fortnite (maybe). Will definitely experience frame drops and performance bottlenecks as the CPU throttles itself to handle the thermal load.

Of course, if you want to go way back when it'll handle everything. Everyone loves a bit of DOOM, PRINCE OF PERSIA and DUKE NUKEM!

  • What would these be like compared to A Ryzen 3 3100 as a Plex server? just considering if these would be an upgrade?

    • +1

If you want access to hardware transcoding, an Intel CPU from 7th-gen onwards will walk all over a Ryzen 3 3100 which has no such capability to speak of, and therefore accessing it requires adding a dedicated GPU with a strong enough encoder (which then adds to power use). Note that hardware transcoding with Plex requires a Plex Pass.

Hardware transcoding can be useful if you're storing 4K Bluray remuxes and transcoding them in real time rather than transcoding them ahead of time and serving up the smaller files, or for tonemapping HDR content to an SDR client. If you don't know what those things mean, you probably don't need hardware transcoding.

Otherwise, IMO, it's probably much of a muchness, especially for $350-odd if you've already got a server running.

      • Thanks very much for that. My server does downmix 4K to 1080p for remote plex streams for family. Maybe this would be better then the Ryzen in this case.

        • +1

QuickSync is great for that purpose then. Offloading transcoding to the media encoders on the iGPU will save a lot of CPU resources and a bit of power as well - but again, it requires a Plex Pass.

I nabbed a Lenovo M720q to replace my existing server a while ago, it came with an i3-9100T and was replacing an i7-5775C + GTX 1060 combo I was using prior. I then scored a fairly cheap i7-8700T to upgrade it with. I didn't need the extra performance, even an i3-9100T was going to be good enough for serving up hardware transcoded media and some HDR tonemapping on the side, but the i7 gives me a chunk more CPU resources to throw at other VMs.

I will note that if your Plex server is headless, you might need a dummy display plug/dongle to trick the iGPU into thinking a monitor is connected for QuickSync to work. You can grab one off Amazon for like 20 bucks from memory.

  • @O O can you pls confirm if this has HDMI out as the pictures on eBay don’t show HDMI.

    • FYI, the EliteDesk 800 G5 DM has two DisplayPort, and one optional port. The optional port can have many options as shown in the description, or maybe unpopulated.

I'm not a store rep, so I don't know. You can send a message to the store rep, Calmago, or left a message on their eBay listing for confirmation.

    • You can just get a displayport to hdmi adapter if you really need hdmi.

      • main issue is more cost and inconvenience of needing order one

most people got lots HDMI cables
would be good if these newer micro pc included at least one HDMI port..

        • They cost $15 with literally one click to order from https://www.amazon.com.au/Wavlink-Display-Adapter-MacOS-Wind… for the extra lazy.

          • @Nom: is the adapter better than a single cable DP to HDMI?
also do you know what is thing about two or one way cable etc?

yeah I know you can just buy it with one click,
even can get it one ebay or where ever

the point is you need to buy one, when most people got heaps of hdmi cables already so don't need to.

            • @pinkybrain:

is the adapter better than a single cable DP to HDMI?

No, they're both the same. Neither is better.
I choose that one specifically because it's Active and capable of 4K60.

also do you know what is thing about two or one way cable etc?

Assume all video adaptors are one way.
You need Display Port to HDMI, because you want to connect the computer's Display Port to the display's HDMI.

  • Sorry trying to find this info and am unable to. Does this or the other Dell deal do USB-C video out? Thanks to anyone who can advise.

    • +1

Here are the specs of the 800 G5

      https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06403210

It seems to suggest it might

"NOTE: Choice of DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 2.0a, VGA, or USB Type-C with alt mode display port and power delivery."

      • +1

        Thank you :)

      • +2

I think that's for the optional port at the back - it may be a DP, HDMI, VGA or USB-C with video out. But the front one does not support video out.

        • Thanks. Bugger, I've ordered but not sure what to do now.

          • @ritzaus: Maybe you are lucky and will get a version with the optional USB-C.

          • -1

@ritzaus: DisplayPort to USB C cables do exist, so you can connect the DisplayPort on the machine to your USB C monitor 👍
Make sure you get this and not USB C to DisplayPort which is much more common !

  • Is this dual channel (2*8G) or one slot of 16G ram?

    • Mine is one slot of 16gb

  • I've a very silly question (already post it on another similar desktop): I'm planning to build a home-server that will run an MVP web app that I'm currently working on. Any idea is this can do the job? Or any other recommendations? Thanks.

    • Minimum Viable Product?

      • Yes sir

        • +1

Local host your MVP. When you’re ready move it to shared hosting/dedicated server. Don’t waste money on a home server

      • Minimum viable PC
