I am pretty sure you won't get Cashback from CR if you use that code as it doesn't appear on the CR website (standard T&C for CR & SB).

  • What passes did you get for your Japan trip?

    • I paid for my JR passes using this one, 5% now sure beats 3.5% maybe later.

      • I am glad I did not buy JR pass from them…..

JR pass is now available online direct from JR, which you can also book tickets in advance online. Agent sold JR pass you have to change when you arrive Japan, then book the tickets you want. Many trains are getting full in the bookable seats already due to the surge of tourist to Japan. Not using an online pass and you will likely have to fight for the unbookable seats or worse no seat at all.

        • Seems fair. We'll just have to wing it lol.

Not all JR passes are available directly from JR online.
For example the JR 7/14/21days national pass, one may only get it from an overseas retailer but not inside Japan.
An exchange certificate needed to be mailed to an overseas address, and you need to bring that to a JR ticket office inside Japan to exchange a Pass.

          • @TanedaR: Looks like the new JR Pass website does let you buy the 7/14/21 day national passes.

            • @kwchaz: True but price is around 10% more expensive.

              • @TanedaR: 10%… having certainty… eh… well, my travel partner says they wanna wing it, so guess we'll do that lol.

              • @TanedaR: Have you been to Japan and book shinkansen in peak season? Say shinkansen between Tokyo and Hokkaido, Tokyo to Kanazawa…. Good luck getting good seats for next two weeks. (I know cos my wife just booked). If you save that 10% and wait till you arrive then you likely not even getting bookable seats. You will then have to fight with the rest who want to save the 10% on the non-bookable seats.

                • @syswong: No, I don't travel for leisure at peak season.
It's just not the ozb way to pay for a premium price and get an unpleasant trip in return.

                  • @TanedaR: Well unless you can control when snow falls then you don't really have a choice do you?

And it's not just skiing, many Japan events are seasonal, Snow festival, cherryblossom, maple leaf falls and the two Takayama festival just to name a few. Also note local support for these even are really high. So if you don't book in advance then you don't go.

Many these events traveller has to start planning six months ago or pay extreme high price so it is important to have everything lock in when travelling in Japan. Just an example, it will not be a good Idea ro miss a $600 onsen stay package because saving money for not getting an online JR pass.

        • Has the JR pass changed? Previously you need to exchange at a JR pass station to get a physical card. I can’t see any digital JR passes on the official website

We were in Japan in early January, and we bought online direct from JR. My daughter was able to reserve/book all our shinkansen seats (esp the back row seat with dedicated space for your luggage). We could login anytime to change tickets, and then all we did was rock up to Tokyo station to get the Shinkansen reserved seat tickets issued.
It did cost a bit more, but was worth it for peace of mind.
I bought our metro passes, as well as day trips/excursions from Klook, as well as USJ tickets and got regular cashback on those.

        • Where do you buy it direct online?

          • +3

            @caustic birch: I bought from https://www.japanrailpass-reservation.net/
From my perspective, we bought over 30days in advance of the activation date and we could book our Shinkansen seats online as soon as payment was made.
Yes, it cost more, but we had an online account and I could change (cancel and rebook) seating on my phone which was great when you are changing plans late.

            • @Zippy7: Thank you mate - wouldn't mind having everything sorted before I leave.

        • This is a great point, I'll look into that, going in early July, they might have a discount code. But being able to prebook our seats for a family of four will set my mind at ease.

And the current exchange rate is very friendly.

The only thing is, klook always have a massive discount sale which stacks with CR or SB during May click frenzy… if 30% off, for a family of 4 that's a huge saving…

  • does it really stack with cashrewards?

    • Maybe, it tracks but could be declined as it's an unlisted code

Got a email about a klook japanese expo. It's not that, they got 2 stands in a corner. There's vaguely 10 different tour companies and 3 airlines and 3 prefectures at the expo. It took me 1 hr each way to get there since there was trackwork and I was again every single time disappointed by public transport. Nothing really interested me, I heard a message about a whisky tour but that was it. Most expos had vaguely or no marketing material. They make you do a survey for a chance to win but thats it. Klook biggest prize on their spin the wheel is $20 off disneyland if you were lucky enough to get it.

        • It was pretty tiny and underwhelming. Okay, some cute little performances and tea ceremonies happening but not even food or sake to try - better experience at the Japanese Cherry blossom festival in Auburn gardens where the same vendors would set up shop - at least there's the blossoms itself which is quite nice.

I learnt about this from a Klook FB ad and now I'm targeted.

        • I was hoping to get the $20 off Disney but got the $10 off Mario go-karting which I wasn’t really interested in. Think they had way too many people than they prepared for. A lot of the brochures, prizes etc were gone by midday on the first day.
