IMO this is a better board for $7-8 less.

    • Yes - your link is a far better board.

I do suggest people try to be more 2023 like and don't be so 2021 (which is the data ChatGPT was trained against).

B450's PCIe gen 3 x16 slot is essentially an AMD BIOS micro code blocked to prevent it to do PCIe gen 4. The chipset itself does PCIe gen 2. So other than the x16 slot, the rest are PCIe gen 2. If a board has 2 m.2 slots, then the one wired to CPU is PCIe gen 3 x4, the one wired to the chipset is PCIe gen 2 x4.

    I wouldn't call getting a $157.74 board a budget build.

    • Seems like you know your mobos, what would you suggest for I5 13600kf ?

    • Not really a bargain price but B450 still makes sense for someone looking to do a budget build using a Zen+ or Zen 2 which are not compatible with some later mobo chipsets

    • agree, msi mortar max sold around 70-90 aud, don't know how this mobo justifies the doubled price.

curious, do we have any "good" bios to unlock the b450 pci gen3-4 capability nowadays?

These max boards from MSI have no chance, not that MSI offered any to their B450 or X470 boards. From memory, Asus and Gigabyte did try to open up PCIe gen 4, but you need to find the very first BIOS that supports Zen 2 and you are limited to Zen 2 CPUs.

B450 doesn't have the ability to support PCIe gen 3 on the chipset itself, the PCIe gen 4 BIOS trick only does it for the PCIe x16 slot that's wired to the CPU and the m.2 slot that's wired to the CPU. Everything else remains PCIe gen 2 (even if you managed to find a BIOS and board that does PCIe gen 4). The BIOS penalty is that you will miss out on all the bug fixes in later AGESA versions (not worth it to be honest). Just get B550 or X570.

        • Tks for the detailed explanation, guess i will have to stick with gen2-3 for a while. Not urgent to get gen 4 but always nice to have

Pretty bad price tbh, it's what I paid for one 3.5 years ago.

  • Didn't know this was considered cheap seesh
