Catch is it takes 6x AA batteries.
You might be able to modify it for 18650, but not worth it for such a low-quality torch.

    • +5

I rate all the energizer torches and headlamps I have. Wouldn't describe them as low quality. For the price much better than the chinese comparisons.

      • Sorry, poor choice of words, I don't mean it is junk, just on the cheap end. A consumer occasional-use item.

      • +2

Have you actually used the Chinese made ones? I've got 5 or 6 of these no brand cree torches bought from Aliexpress, some from 6-7 years ago when they were starting to get popular. EVERY single one of them are still going, not one of them has an issue.

Don't make assumptions just because of a brand as it's stupid.

        • Yeah plenty of them. Heaps of super high power ones too. 75% failure rate.

          • -2

@frondono: I'd probably only buy BLF I was looking at any.

            • +1

@frondono: I don't know if it's your luck or you're going for those advertising rubbish lumens claims ones, but I have not had a single failure, all from no brand faceless cree torches. Your experience is quite the opposite of mine, so I wouldn't necessarily use that as a basis to judge as the sample size is too small.

              • +4

@clubhonda: Mine have almost all failed. That's to say, the LED part still works, but not consistently. The connection to the battery corrodes or something. An easy fix, but when you only payed $3 for it in the first place you don't want to spend much time on them.

        • Yep, i have probably a dozen cheap Chinese cree torches and all are still working perfectly. Half of them from 6-7 years ago too.

If you're on a budget buy aliexpress Chinese cree they're fine.

I've moved on to Sofirn torches now so I'll give away my old collection to a family member with new batteries. I know a guy who services defibrillators in hospitals so I get 18650 batteries from them.

      • OK, you persuaded me. I got one for water use, e.g. snorkelling.
And they do look better than other Energizer torches I've had. I think original price was a lot more than the $25 headline.

Very heavy and bulky - 340g plus cells. HUGE! Reminds me of the olde days when Maglites doubled as weapons.
GOOD: more chance of getting them back when loaned to kids/friends on camp :-)
BAD: you do not want this in your pocket.

3s2p, so 4.5V, works well with just 3 fresh Eneloop cells installed.

    Takes 6x AA batteries!
I wonder whether it can optionally take e.g. 22650
After all, if it takes 6x AA it presumable needs an insert.

    E:F,B

    • +1

I tried. Insert does not want to come out, and head seems to be glued on for waterproofing.

      • Too bad, thanks.

  • +6

After using rechargeable 18650 torches, I would never go back to AA again.

    • Second that!

    • +1

      Or perhaps a 21700.

I'm heading that way today so I might check it out

While most of my torches these days are li-ion powered, AA lights have their place.

They're a light you can give to someone who doesn't know anything about potentially dangerous rechargeable batteries and not worry about it. And they're usually… quite often smaller than an 18650 light, which might be handy. Although yes, with that you could just say use another li-ion battery size.

    • I have a few great 18650 torches, but the Sofirn S10 pro is a fantastic EDC. It can run Anduril on a single AA and eneloops are always on hand.

However, I value Anduril over battery type and I probably won't buy another torch without it.

    durable aircraft grade aluminium

How many of these would I need to build an F-22? I need to build it in time for Macy's parade. Asking for a friend in China.

  • Will it run on rechargeable AAs? Just the thing to use all your eneloops then.

  • everyone knows that when you're seal team six about to raid a compound in abbottabad the place you go to kit up is…. bunnings

    • Haha!

I always find this labelling of stuff as 'tactical' a bit of a joke though. What's it supposed to imply? That you are a Seal Team 6 member, as opposed to average Joe in Aus, only using it for when the house Lecky supply craps out.

Have a look at the loonies on the Reddit r/tactical gear where all the US nutjobs hang out, showing off their would be Rambo fantasy stuff. Would be funny if they weren't so potentially dangerous. Still, we all know it only needs a good guy with (lots of) guns, and his tactical torch, to keep the bad guys in their place.

      • Makes more sense when you realise it’s a styling descriptor that means “mostly black”. Like, you could get a My Little Pony one, a Minions one, or a Tactical one

        • Thanks. You have 'enlightened' me. I'm none the wiser, but I am at least now better informed.

    How is this one?
    Same spec but rechargable.
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/energizer-1000-lumen-rechargeabl…

    • Nice! But that one lacks IPX7 waterproofing.

Was $39 in deal a few months back: (RRP $90)

They are old models being cleared.

      • this torch shows $15 for me, with one store near me having stock.

        • reporting stock. Most likely missing.

        • I ordered one from Clyde North, only store in SE Melbourne with supposed stock.

They messaged and cancelled within 15 minutes saying no stock.. :(

          • @WasBargain: Reordered for delivery and it arrived at 7:01am this morning..

    • Doesn't have the magical 'T' word!

    • Picked up one for $15, much better spec with rechargeable battery IMO, at the time still plenty of stock left (at least 8) at the local store

    "Tactical"
    "1000 lumen of white light"

    Those things don't go together.

    • I think they could. Maybe "covert" less so?

      • Tactical literally means minimal sound or light, aiming to be concealed or escape detection.

  • Get Energizer OI!

  • "tactical" is too much of a buzzword these days, but with torches, it would normally refer to the crenulated bezel, strobe mode and instant-on switch with the absolute bare minimum of modes. and is black or some camo pattern.

  • fyi saw two of these at the oxenford store last night.. $8.
located on the left as you enter the dunnies
    battery version.

i'm a fanboi convoy torch store on aliexpress/18650 batteries.. so passed on this one.. but each to their own eh

  • Still some at North Launceston hanging in the lighting section
