Down to $499 from Telstra. I'd buy local given the price difference.

    • Telstra gives you a $400 voucher if you get a contract with them too don't they? You could get this almost for free?

I'm looking to get back on optus but their deals don't seem as good

      • +4

why would you be looking to get back on Optus?

        • +2

Telstra reception is atrocious on my train line which is where I use my data the most. Optus was far superior.

Edit: in fact Telstra reception is kinda shit everywhere in Victoria imo. You can make calls and get 3g which is kinda useless these days. 4g, 4g+ and 5g seems way better on optus everywhere.

Before I went regional I was in the Melbourne CBD and I couldn't get data anywhere in flagstaff gardens (which is where i ran every day). Optus data coverage was better everywhere imo

          • +1

@gruffjaguar: Hmmm interesting, I've also done the regional move and have to say I'm so glad to be back on Telstra network. Been trialling between Optus and Telstra every 2nd year and I'm going to stick to Telstra going forward for as long as I am in regional Vic

Within Melbourne though I agree with what you've concluded, Optus coverage feels better when travelling within 60mins of the CBD, but the comple dropout areas I experience on my commute on Optus just makes it not viable for me

            • +2

@aaronsd: As someone who frequently travels to regional Vic, it's no competition. Optus is garbage outside of any township and often has black spots whereas Telstra seems to have far less gaps in coverage.

City coverage seems very suburb specific from my experience but I've had no issues with either on any Melbourne train line 🤷‍♂️

              • +1

@baz3189: I work for Vline and travel on 2-4 trains daily as part of the job. I couldn't disagree more. Telstra has better coverage if you want to make calls but optus data is way better.

                • +1

@gruffjaguar: Currently on a train headed to Albury and have had uninterrupted web browsing and music streaming the whole way. It's by no means perfect but my experience with Optus was how you described Telstra between Seymour and Albury. Constant drop outs, constant buffering and even the occasional spotify buffering which is impressive since it usually loads up multiple songs ahead of time.

I do wonder if the handset can play a significant role as both my tests were on my pixel 7 but my previous P30 Pro seemed a bit better on Optus on this line…

                  • @baz3189: Are you joking? I am on the exact same train. And my reception has been atrocious. Even posting to ozbargain has been a battle. I've got two phones tho. One Samsung work phone and one Xiaomi Personal phone and they are both terrible on Telstra.

Maybe your phone is buffering when we are going through towns. If you try to fire up kayo and watch something live out this way you will spend 90% of your time looking at a frozen screen in my experience.

Wild that our experiences can be so different on the same train.

                    • @gruffjaguar: Hahaha that's crazy!
I just streamed 5 mins of Kayo at full HD with no buffering. was only tennis on so I lost interest pretty fast. I'd expect buffering over longer period but my phone has had 4G connection for the whole trip so far from what I have observed.
Did the above test between Benalla and Wangaratta for reference. Fast.com indicates 14mbps which isn't anything special but adequate for the stream.

                      • @baz3189: That's wild to me. I don't even bother trying kayo out on this line when the footy is on because of the reception. Maybe the handset plays a larger role than I thought. Both of the phones im using are old. I always thought the handsets didn't play that much of a role in reception quality but maybe I'm way off.

Having said that, my colleagues and I discuss our reception woes occasionally and this train line in particular is common point of pain… Now I don't know what to think.

Maybe I should get a prepaid optus sim before I jump ship and do some experiments.

                    • @gruffjaguar: Seeing one of you has very good mobile internet why don't you hotspot each other?

                      • +1

@WesthamAreMassive: @gruffjaguar @baz3189 As someone that used to work in the planning team at one of the big telcos and managed the 'link budgets', handset makes a huge difference in radio performance (Iphones are notoriously deaf), but so many other factors come into play as well just in the environment. That's before you get into the nonsense the carriers will do regarding different tiers of users, suspected content type and other shenanigans.

Telstra and Optus both have large amounts of coverage, and its very much going to depend where you are.

                        • @Argenteus: Oh that's actually super useful information. Is there any software or websites your aware of that can be used to get a reliable estimate of network speed? I've noticed alot of maps that claim 4g coverage in areas I am in. However not all 4g is the same. 1 bar (or less) of 4g is nearly useless but on a coverage map areas like that still show as being covered. It would be great to get a map that displayed the average data rate instead of whether the area is "covered".

Also what handsets in your experience perform the best?

                          • +1

@gruffjaguar: The ACCC is trying/considering mandating standardisation of the coverage maps. Right now the carriers have to buy their own geodata (Terrain, clutter, buildings) and some of them purposely use very bad terrain data (100 m resolution. For reference, 30 m is free nationally) because it makes the coverage look better.

I'm yet to find a good source for the RF performance of a device - One of the fundamental things about buying a phone. Telstra does have their own requirements for granting their 'blue tick', which at least means it passed some performance metric - as much as you can trust that.

No current association with any of the carriers.

            • @aaronsd: Oh interesting. What area are you in? Do you use the trains?

In me experience the Bendigo and Geelong lines are ok on Telstra. But Traralgon, Seymour, Albury, and Ballarat are horrid. Seymour/Albury are particularly bad. There is a black spot that persists from Wallan to about Essendon. And from Seymour to Albury Telstra barely functions at all.

I switched from optus to Telstra for the first time in about a decade in 2022 and I was honestly surprised by the poor performance. The way people talk about their network I was really expecting a step up but I've had the opposite experience.

        • They hate reception?

      • +3

But the monthly plans are so high it's hardly free (e.g check buying plus 12mths boost vs Tesltra for 12mths)

    • Are the Telstra ones on stupid Telstra-specific firmware that delays updates?

    • Tried for 20 minutes after several browsers and devices all required verification multiple times of email, address and phone number, then asked for license and passport details, WTF telstra. nah mate.

Amazon, 20 seconds, bought, no hassle. And $15 cheaper is just a small bonus. Delivery time, meh, not too fussed. Don't need license number and passport details being leaked with Telstras next hack of personal info.

  • Will pull the trigger when price drops below 400

    • Could be waiting a year

    Buy from Telstra

    • How to buy if you do not have a telstra ID?

  • +5

If you want to brace the cold of marketplace you can get a brand new one for $300. Most people get these free with a pixel 7.

    • What>? Buy a piel 7 and get a free 6a?

    • No warranty though?
I missed the Telstra deal, and even the $400 price I’m seeing on marketplace is very tempting

      • As long as you get proof of purchase off the seller, you'll get full warranty. Haven't purchased an electronics device "new" from a store in years.

  • +3

FWIW, last time this deal popped up JB wouldn't price match it for me (in store or live chat) because it was Amazon UK. Officeworks however matched it over the phone + beat it by 5%, and the delivery was free.

  • +3

Worth to pay more to get Pixel 7 instead of Pixel 6a?

    • Depends on what you value in a phone, the pixel has a few features that might be nicer to you; ie photo deblur, or 90hz screen as a couple, but at the 50% extra cost, is that worth it to you?

Over all, yeah it's a better phone.

  • +1

With buds option is a buck or so more. Are these the Pixel Buds, or the cheap quasi-disposable corded earphones?

    • Where is that?

      • Under the main listing photo, there is a section for colour - charcoal or chalk.

Under that, there is a style section - 'phone only', or 'with buds'. With buds is now $5 cheaper in fact.

    • Bound to be a listing error, but good luck trying to get them when just the phone arrives :)

  • +1

Ordered from Amazon previously for the 6a, don't do it, took almost 6 weeks to arrive.

  • +2
    • Awesome, thanks.

    • Unfortunately they wouldn't match for me, oh well.

Buying through Telstra is a pita too tbh.

    • Thanks just did the same and bought 2

  • +6

Been waiting on my order for this phone since the start of January, so be prepared to wait. Support has been useless, blaming the manufacturer for there being no stock despite the page listing it as in stock.

    • +3

Yeah, plenty of similar experiences in the comments of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/748729. I'd recommend buying from somewhere else.

    • "Priority International Shipping" Currently Showing: "delivery February 25 - March 30"
      Shocked Face

      Normal free: 7-10 business days.

      • When did you order? My first order didn't end up getting sent after what, 6 weeks? I reordered since people were reporting some success with that but a week later, not so much as an estimate.

  • +2

I got officeworks to price match this with amazon in store for $460.47 with a pricematch of the charcoal one

    • no luck here unfortunately! tried two different stores (Castle Hill & Blacktown) and both stated it's not Amazon AU hence no price match

  • +1

Not Amazon UK again! I waited more about 2 months and then after calling their useless support multiple times, just cancelled my order.

    • +2

Yep, if not for the fact I paid with discounted Amazon credit I would cancel my order from a month ago.

  • +1

I bought 2, on Jan 3rd. Got one last week. Still waiting on the other (was one in each colour for the parents).

  • +3
