I received a promotional email from Tick Travel Insurance today. It says that they "want to share this excitement with you with a 15% off on your next Travel Insurance policy".

Promocode: Travel15
Expire Date: 28/02/2023

I don't work for them, nor do I work in the insurance industry. The promotional email was sent to me because I previously purchased an insurance cover from them. Although the deal was in a promotional email instead of on their website, I don't think it's a targeted offer, because the promocode can be used by anyone.

Edit: just did some research and found out that Tick Travel Insurance and InsureandGo are both wholly owned subsidiary of Europ Assistance.

I'm in the market for travel insurance atm, but the reviews for Tick aren't that great for ppl that have made claims. Anybody recommend another?

    • I'm not sure. I bought their policy last week because they were the cheapest option at that time to cover my overseas trip. I haven't made any claim yet, but hopefully I won't get any trouble.

    • I wasn't sure about them either but can say they were quite helpful with processing a claim related to travel delays from bad weather in Nov 22.

Ended up getting a good $800 back from them for a 2 day delay about a month after submitting the claim - less time and more $ than I was expecting.

    • Their PDS is pretty restrictive - for instance, no medical expenses will be paid if you've had alcohol. I haven't seen that restriction with any other insurer.

      • I had a look at their PDS as well, and it's so complex. I don't know what evidence I need to keep for claims. For example, how am I going to prove that I didn't have alcohol? I have only claimed once on my house insurance and a couple of times on my private health insurance extras, like dental checkup and clean.

    • I've used them for a while and had to make my first claim back in July last year due to getting covid the day before my trip. Fortunately, I was able to reschedule and get a refund for most of my expenses (flights, tours etc.) directly through who I booked.
However, for the things I couldn't get a direct refund, Tick were extremely helpful and the process was quick and in a month or so, I had the refund back minus any excess.

    • Can confirm. Lodged a basic travel delay claim 4 weeks ago and still waiting for my payout.

      • I just did some research and found out that Tick Travel Insurance and InsureandGo are both wholly owned subsidiary of Europ Assistance. Did they reject your claim or just put it on hold? Please let me know the result while I'm still in my cooling off period. Any other suggestions?

        • On hold but I've basically had to now escalate my claim to AFCA, which I know will now speed up the process. However, no one should have to escalate their claim to AFCA to get the right outcome. They should just be paying a claim within 2 weeks, considering mine is a basic travel claim plus I've submitted 5 files as supporting documents.

          • @hash88: Did they have some sort of SLA? What is the normal time frame for travel insurance companies to process claims? Another person mentioned that the claim with World2Cover was almost 2 months long in another thread https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/725506

            • @We: SLA is 10 business days. Even worse, after submitting documents, they then respond asking me to submit documents that were already submitted.

i know that not everyone has credit cards and not all credit cards provide travel insurance, but if you have those credit cards which provide free travel insurance if the return ticket paid by those CCs, what's the benefit of taking out a separate insurance like this? Seems more expensive

    • I only use the free rental car excess insurance from my credit card. I'm just not confident enough to use the free insurance. Does anyone have any experience with claiming on credit card travel insurance?

CC travel insurance don't give you any option but to always pay an excess per claim category. e.g. flight cancelled, luggage was damaged, and phone was damaged, you'd need to pay the excess for each one (3 times).

Travel insurance like Tick, Covermore, etc give you the option to select plans without an excess required.

      • I've selected the default excess ($200 ?) because it was much cheaper than the lower or no excess options. Is it better to choose the no excess option if provided?

Really up to you but it all depends whether you experience issues on your trip or not.

I experienced bad luck in my last trip last year and needed to claim luggage, cancelled train tickets, lost sunglasses, and lost scarf. If I were to claim that using your travel insurance, I'd most likely have to pay an excess of $600 (3 x $200) because of the 3 different categories (luggage, transport, and personal items). If I'm on a plan that doesn't have excess, albeit slightly more expensive, I'd have to pay no excess on any of those claims.

You have to do the maths but in my opinion unless you are doing something with high risk, no excess is a waste of money as you pay a huge premium for it.

Most people will go 10-15 times overseas before they encounter something they can claim.

You can't beat the insurance company at their own game.

  • I used to use Tick when they were cheaper but this time i have used InsureandGo; similar cost $100 excess which makes a big difference if you need to claim. How many items are you likely to claim on that are worth well over $200 second hand? Excess applies to each and every item. I travel light, don't take valuables, take care not to miss flights etc, imo insurance is for medical.

I just had a look on InsureandGo website, and the quote process is so similar to Tick's. InsureandGo has $100 excess option which is good, but both Tick and InsureandGo have $0 excess and $200 excess options. My upcoming trip is a 24 days European trip, and both of them offer a policy called "Worldwide exc USA" to cover my trip. I just did a comparison based on 2 persons (couple), 24 days, "Worldwide exc USA", One-Trip Silver (InsureandGo) / Standard (Tick) cover.
      ——————— $0 excess — $100 excess — $200 excess
      Insureand Go — $517.75 —— $414.20 ——— $372.78
      Tick ————— $324.44 —— N/A ————— $238.40
In this case I think Tick's is cheaper. My only concern is about the claim process, because they are a small insurance company, I think.

      • Claimed with Tick with no issues a few years ago when my holiday got cancelled at the start of Covid but this time have decided to go with InsureandGo with the 20% off code due to the excess options and the good Covid cover on the top tier.

  • I also went with Insureandgo over tick even though it was a bit more expensive. Reason is the low Covid19 cancellation cover. $2500 covid cancellation wasnt enough to cover our costs if we were to catch covid before travelling.

It pays to play around with dates too, for me it ended up being $25 cheaper to change the cover date to extra 4 days after our return to Australia.

    • Did you mean that it can be cheaper if I extend my travel days on the insurance, say 4 days longer than I need? I thought that the premium calculation would be simply "base fee + daily premium * number of days", which means shorter is always cheaper. I will have a try at changing the travel days. Thanks!

      • I found that it seems the premium increases for every 4 days. I tried this on Tick's website:
Standard cover for 2 persons (couple) default ($200) excess for 23 days is $227.05, 24 to 27 days is $238.40, and 28 to 31 days is $282.09.
My trip is for 24 days, and I can indeed save a little by reducing it by 1 day, which I don't want to, but I can't save anything by extending it.

      • Yep in my case it for some reason ended up being cheaper to have my insurance end on the 26th instead of the 22nd which is my return date. ymmv

LPT: start the policy before you start your holiday

  • I notice they have increased their premium, increased by ~$10 for the top cover.

  • So this code worked for Covermore insurance (with promo in all caps), thanks!
