Might not sound like a great deal at first glance, until you re-read the offer and it's actually a bonus offer "on top" of the offer from the credit card you apply for.
Eg. amex velocity platinum would be 75,000 Velocity Points + you choice of extra
    30,000 velocity/250SC/$200 coles gift card.

    • +4

$375 fee for that card though.

      • +1

Plus return domestic flight (easily spend more than $375 return flight from Perth to about anywhere in Oz).
        and 2.25 points/$

Question: I used to have an Amex with Qantas flavour, less than 18 months ago, will I get the bonus with this card ?

  • +4

holy shit. If I knew this earlier I would have bought virgin australia flight during Double Status credit promo…………………….. Could have got Platinum easily

    Oh Noooooooooooooooooooooo

  • +6

Anyone got the ozbargain links to the eligible credit cards?

      • These are marked as expired. Any new deals people would recommend?

        • +1

virgin money still has the same offer in the website, even though the post is marker as expired

          • +1

@RGV: Not sure why they are marked expired, the offers are still the same and valid

            • +1

@Ehty: Deals without expiry automatically expire after 90 days. They have to be reported to be marked as long running deals if there is no specified expiry date

          • @RGV: Virgin money are horrendous, not worth it even for the bonus points. They're almost uncontactable if you have any kind of problem. Just lookup some reviews.

  • So you would have to complete the spend limit to get the bonus points for the card you apply for by 31st March? In order to get the additional 30K or SC's?

    • +6

You need to select your reward flavour and complete your card application by 31 March. Then once you've met the minimum criteria for the card you applied for your reward will be paid out within another 30 days.

It's physically not possible to complete a spend x every month for 4 months promo by the end of March as would be the case with the Virgin Money cards.

    • +3

It doesn't specify you have to meet spend requirements by 31 March.

Looks like you have to make your selections (out of the 3) and apply for a card before 31 March, the rest can happen after with no deadline specified - that's how I understand it..

      • Thanks. Sounds like a good promo

  • +6

Love the promo as a result of Virgin Australia is trying hard to build up their book for the ASX re-listing!

    • +2

I'll be aiming to spend my Velocity points within 2 years of listing: you can be aure the airline will be gutted, and back in financial trouble within a few years.

      • +5

Lol @ the downvoters. Anyone familiar with private equity knows the script.

      • +3

And all the suckers that put money in

  • +3

    Last deal discussion

  • +1

sounds useful but a very small subset of cards, amex, westpac and the high flyer one for non specialists.. the high flyer one is the one I would qualify for but it has such a high spend $1500 each month…

  • +1

I only signed up to the amex deal last week to get the points, and according to the t&cs I'll miss out on this bonus. What a shame, I didn't wait one week!

    • Me to but why not apply for the virgin money card 25,000
Points each month for the first 4 months = 100,000 points

I already have the virgin card apples like 20 days ago so will go with Amex

Also I might go for the $200 Coles digital gift card only because the Amex has a annual fee of $375 down to $175 but can I use it to by Uber eats gift cards

Even if I don’t get approved , waiting for Anz $50 cashback(got the points finally), and Westpac points should be late this month… can I choose the offer and next time I get the card I.e 6 or 12 months I will still get the bonus ?

    • May I know which Amex deal? Cheers

      • +1

It was just the amex platinum velocity. I needed the points for the rest of a business class flight I was chasing, so took what I could get.

My take for people who are looking to churn the card purely for a SC boost is that it's a toss up between the Westpac Platinum card and the VA Velocity Flyer Card depending on your personal preferences/current situation.

    • Westpac are offering 70 000 bonus points compared to VA Velocity Flyer who are offering 100 000 points.
    • Westpac min income is $30k vs VA asking for $35k
    • The fee for Westpac is higher at $149 ($99+$50 Velocity fee) vs $64 (first year reduced) for the VA Velocity.
Edit: If you're already a Westpac customer this drops to a $49 annual fee + $50 velocity fee which makes Westpac even cheaper and will factor into the calculation I've done below.

Westpac has the lower min spend at $4000 within max 90 days compared to the $6000 across exactly 4 months on VA Velocity.
The upside to Westpac here is that you can hit the min spend in the first month and hopefully get paid out sooner so it can be closed and you can move on to the next churn rather than holding the VA card for the full 4 months + additional processing time.

From a purely points and SC per dollar outlay perspective the Westpac card is 17.35 VFF points (17.57 if you get the $49+$50 existing Westpac customer annual fee) and 0.06 SC per dollar whereas the VA Flyer is 17.14 VFF points and 0.04 SC per dollar. Working for if you're my maths teacher

The additional benefits that come from 2x Econ X upgrades on Westpac vs a $129 Travel credit from VA Velocity I guess are going to come down to your personal preferences. If you're already Gold/Platinum and chasing the SCs for moving up to Plat/retaining Platinum the upgrades are probably not worth it since you can select X seats for free once Platinum. In that case the extra credit from the VA Velocity might be useful for a personal trip but being tied to the VA Flyer card for 4 months as a churn card could be an issue for you as well as finding an extra $2000 in min spend.

Overall, I'd lean to the Westpac card in the interests of time and overall outlay but if you really want the extra Velocity points and can handle being tied to the card for 4 months the VA Flyer seems a good option too.

    • Westpac says 100k points and fee waived fully for first year if your already a Westpac customer, where did 70k come from?

    • Any suggestions on Qantas status credits, or is that much harder?

      • +1

I can't think of anything in recent memory that has earned Qantas status credits without flying.
That said, I'm pretty much divested from Qantas at this point and almost exclusively travel on VA for work so I can't say I'm the authority on all things QF.

      • +1

        To get to Gold:

Virgin: 500 and 400 to retain
        Qantas: 700 and 600

So harder ? Yes. Much harder ? not sure, how often do you fly ?

        • +2

QF earns are lower though - A standard flight between the major capitals generally pays lower on Qantas vs Virgin and rarely is the QF flight cheaper than a comparable VA flight.

      • +3

Very hard to compare, depends on whether you are willing to do status run and whether you could travel during the double status credits promotion period.

One thing to keep in mind tho, one key benefit (among many) is the lounge access. Base on my recent experience, Qantas Club is going downhill and VA lounge is much better. Had travelled with my friend for weekend trips 4 times in the past 12 months, he went to QC, I went to VA lounge. He got no proper food to eat during lunch / dinner time while I had many options at VA lounge.

        • +1

Yeah the two tiered system at Qantas is really penalising Qantas Club members.

Came back from Sydney on the weekend, business and that product is superb, can't fault it.

I feel the VA product is straddling the line between Qantas Club and Qantas Business.

But yes, Qantas Club at the moment is very hit and miss.

          • @Drakesy: I totally agree Qantas Business Lounge and the Business class product are great! (way better than VA)
However I was very disappointed on the soft products aspect.

For priority boarding, VA did an amazing job to enforce the priority boarding (100% of the time I was able to board first), compare to QF, pretty much 80% of time not enforcing it.

For the disembark experience, VA will have a cabin crew stand between business class section and economy class section to ensure all business class passenger disembark first.

For priority baggage, as VA gold, my baggage always come out first (the first batch)

For business meal, you get a great tasty meal on board with VA, QF is a hit and miss even though you might be paying 30% more for it.

It is really the little things that VA did so well, make me stop flying QF all together. (they are also a lot more price competitive compare to QF)
I haven't flew QF for more than 12 months, so your experience might be different.

    • If you collect both QF and VFF, going for the VA leaves you the option to collect QFF on a Westpac card.

    • Is it worth register for a new account with Westpac just to save the extra 50$ annual fee on the card?

      • +1

yes its worth 50% of the annual fee

    • Mate, thank you very much for this summary. I opted for Velocity Flyer over Westpac for more points (100k vs 70k) without thinking too much, certainly didn't factor in the 4 month vs 1 month of churning.

      • +3

Also worth remembering the $129 flight credit, making the $64 fee a bargain.

    • As I said above, worth noting that virgin money have awful reviews. I was with them for a short time and found them to be completely uncontactable. Ignored chats and hours long wait times on the phone.

Won't matter unless you have a problem, though.

    • I applied with Virgin Money and was approved in 30 minutes. So easy and painless! ANZ should learn from this mob. :)

So in order to earn the bonus, do I need to earn the full 100K VFF on this card or will qualifying for one of the months be sufficient?

  • Anyone did not receive the confirmation email?

    • Not yet…

      • How long did it take for you?

        • A few hours

  • Last time there was a similar promo, I’d received bonus points for a new card a month or two before activating the offer and was still awarded the additional points. Might be the case for this one too

  • Anyone have any thoughts on the American Express ‘Escape’ (fee free) card?

Would be a secondary card to gain access to AMEX offers and this deal. Thx.

    • +2

The Escape card is ineligible for this promo so I wouldn't recommend it in that regard.

I have an Escape card and it's a run of the mill fee free card - Earns Velocity points and seems to be eligible for the same spread of AmEx offers that I see on my Discovery card but comes with up to 55 days interest free rather than 44 days on the QF Discovery. Thinking about cancelling the Discovery card to reduce the number of open accounts.

      • Appreciate the feedback. I’d actually read “Excluding Escape Card“ inversely. Still, suits my needs for the AMEX offers.

  • Is it worth the effort to set up a Westpac account for the reduction in fees? Anyone have any experience setting up an account with them?

  • +1

Anyone know if family pooling applies to these status credits? Looks like a great deal

    • +1

They will go to whoever signs up for the offer and then in turn the credit card. Once they scrape across to that person's account it will then family pool to the other account in a day or 2

      • +3

So then if a husband and wife both avail themselves of the offer, one can get instant gold (although they still need to complete minimum number of flights)

        • that's correct!
keep in mind, reward ticket/flight don't count toward the eligible sectors!
Which mean you need to pay for your flights to get 4 eligible sectors

        • yep spot on, just make sure you setup family pooling before you sign up to the cards. If you dont and for eg wife signs up to card and get the SC and then you setup family pooling you cant pool them across

  • Another question - I already have a Citibank credit card and a NAB Qantas credit card. Looking at the T&Cs, the Virgin Money cards are now issued by NAB (since acquiring Citi).

Does this preclude me from the bonus points offers? Or is NAB simply providing the credit card service whilst Virgin Money is the actual card provider? The T&Cs seem to be silent on this point.

    • you can still get it , I have NAB and recently got 2 Citi cards

  • Wonder how long the email takes to come thru…..

  • My VA gold is expiring on 28th Feb and 215 credits short. Would the timing work out if I apply for a credit card now?

    • Unlikely you’ll get credited quickly enough by the time the card it arrives and you make the minimum spend

  • +1

I used it about this time last year with Velocity Platinum, got 120k plus the bonus 30k. I’m actually keeping the card through a year I get my moneys worth from
The annual fee, the earn rate is glorious month to month, and the cost of my Friday - Sunday return flights to Melb I booked for later in the year were the same price as the annual fee if I paid cash .

  • If I want to get a Westpac Altitude Black or Platinum for Velocity points, will I still be eligible if I had a Westpac Altitude Rewards Platinum card within the past 12 months?
    Thanks in advance.

    • I am in the same situation.
You should still be eligible for this promo but you won't be eligible to the sign up bonus point that the Westpac Altitude card offer.

      • thanks.. then i might need to sign up for the Velocity Flyer card although the 4 months, $1500 spend each month is quite annoying..

  • What happens once I accumulated enough SCs for Gold but have no eligible flights yet? Do I have a 12 months to make 4 flights and get Gold for 1 year?

    • +1

You have 12 months from whenever you accumulate the first of the 500 status credits to get the 4 VA flights, booking them doesn’t count you have to fly them , otherwise the SCs are worthless . Virgin count on a 12 month rolling period so the SCs will drop off as they reach a year old

      • Thanks. Does this apply to all SC or only to the newly acquired SC? I have about 80 SC now accumulated from different sources over some time, would those SCs expire before the new 250 SC or all the 330 SCs will have 12 months since I have enough for silver (Gold will come from my wife).

        • Yeah each individual SC earn rolls off after 12 months, it’s not like qantas where they wipe them all on the same date every year . So with Virgin you only have to accumulate the SCs in any 12 month period at any time to qualify , as long as you have the 4 flights as well.

  • Is the month assessed as a calendar month or does the month start when I'm first approved for the card? If I apply now, hitting $1500 could be pretty challenging if I need to do so by the end of February.

    • Did you ever find an answer to this?

    • It is the Silver Virgin card, right?
I also want to know how do they count the 4 months x $1500 spend.

      • It's statement month, so starts once you are approved

  • oof - I signed up for and was approved on Westpac Altitude Rewards (not Velocity) yesterday. I could ask them to switch it in customer support, but I have to activate this offer first then apply right, so will it still work or is that too risky? (It's the 250 status credits I want - without that I don't particularly care about the velocity points)

  • +2

Does anyone know what the definition of 'new customer' for the Virgin Flyer Card is (for picking up the 100000 Velocity Points)? I had one last year and got rid of it in September.

    • +1

I have the same question. It used to have a 12 month exclusion but the new ts & cs are very vague, saying not allowed for existing customers. What is the definition of existing customer? I closed mine in March 2022.

    • Same question here, I cancelled the card back in June

  • I assume the $200 coles voucher is worth more than the 30k points if SC is not needed?

    • +1

Depends if you intend on using it for flights/ how much you value the points - the general rule of thumb I use is 1c/ point (& some would say it's worth a lot more for business class redemption).

Recently redeemed CNS-SYD OW in economy for 17,800 points + approx $42 tax when the cash price for the same flight was $300+ (from memory) at the time of booking.

    • +4

30k points much more valuable if you have any intention of booking flights.

  • Folks how easy is it to cancel Virgin card and how long it takes to get the bonus points after meeting the criteria

    • You get the points each month the day after your statement is issued. You'd have to wait after the 4 months until you get the additional 30k velocity points, and then should be able to cancel.

  • Applied virgin card yesterday and there was a link at the last to upload the documents. While I gathered docos to uplaod the link expired but I got an application number 1 hr later. When I check the status of the application using the ref nbr I dont find any link to upload the docs and it says "Hold tight - we're reviewing your application
You're nearly there! We're now assessing your application for the Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card with Bonus Velocity Points, and will let you know if you've been approved"

Hope I dont get any rejection. Has anyone faced the same situation and suggest what shoud I do ?

    • I came across the same problem. I then called and went through about 5 different people (repeat verification for every single one of them) and they gave me an email to send the docos through. By that stage I had jack of it and told them to cancel my application and went with the Westpac one instead. Was approved same day. Hope this helps!

    • Go here

      Find question:
      Q. Can I check my applications progress?

There's a link on the answer. Use it to upload your documents.
Note: using your 17 digit reference number.

      • +1

Finally managed to get through. Got this no to call 1300335213 and they advised to send receent payslips [email protected] email to .
Sent the docs while speaking with them and got acknowledgement of receipt .
Card apporved within an hour of email yesterday afternoon

        • thank you for this, have emailed them on this email address with my docs, as haven't received the confirmation email with my application number.
