  • I was literally in the door at Aldi at 0830 - most of the bunches were pretty manky, but I managed to find the only decent one.

Went to Aldi today saw the flowers yes they are 1 dozen roses but they are small and don't look so fresh

    Roses are red,
    Violets are blue,
I saved $25 by being single,
    And so can you.

    Love you Ozbargain! 😘

    • You can also save $25 by being stingy mate πŸ˜‚

    These are shipped from Africa

    I trolled a local nursery once by mentioning. Her response;
    Think of the carbon footprint!

Still doesn't detract from the obvious bargain in my book.

    • Where do you think most of the other roses come from?

      • Given they are a highly perishable product I wouldn't say 'most' come from Overseas.

        • +1

Oh but i would beg to differ since theres nothing more perishable than seafood and we export that.

So theres no reason we cant or dont import lots of plant material like roses since we dont exactly have a big enough commercial source of it here.

          • @xoom: You are very likely correct, I have no idea about the industry. However I don't neg people for posting a quip like the above User.

            • @LurkMoar: If you are referring to me, I can assure you I have not negged your comment

            • @LurkMoar: Well i didn't neg you you if it means anything. I prefer to have a lively discussion.

            • @LurkMoar: Wasn't me who neg you

        • A not-so-recent article but it gives you some info
          https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-09/imported-flowers-fuel…

I know that some flower growers didn't grow in greenhouses the last couple of years because of higher energy costs; that gap would have been filled by imports.

    • No wonder they look knackered

The roses were $19.99 in 2020

Aldi said: 'We select the best value roses meeting strict quality standards and for our amazing value 12 stem bunch this year we have used top grade roses from growers in Kenya.'

      • Apparently Kenya, Colombia and Ecuador supply the majority of the world's roses. The number of roses sold in Australia from those three countries may be as high as 90 per cent.

I've never understood the whole concept of getting flowers, its such a waste of money. I would be pretty pissed off if my husband spent money on flowers, rather spend the money on stuff we actually need. I would be happier with a box of KFC wicked wings or if he just did the washing up for the day lol

    • Or maintenance free artificial flowers

    • +1

We get you. Unfortunately theres many wives and or girlfriends out there that don't agree with you.

And the worst part is they will say. Oh you don't need to get me flowers. And when you don't they get mad.

    • +2

Because "we actually need" a box of KFC wicked wings… High in saturated fat, sodium and preservatives.

Remember a gift is to make someone we love feel special and important. Of course you can show it in different ways, but it's the thought that matters. Buying flowers regardless of how unromantic a guy is, will always show thought by a small but level of effort you have shown to your loved one. It's why we send/bring flowers to someone sick in hospital.
In my opinion it's a pretty universal and easy way to do it. You don't have to research or try and find different things, it's a simple flowers and your thought is there. That's why it's so popular, makes the job easy for men. Washing up is an everyday thing, flowers aren't.

Because "we actually need" a box of KFC

Yes we do. We just do.

    • You're the minority

  • You can also get 10 roses for $14.95 (even better baragain!) @ ALDI in the standard flowers section, generally right at the entrance for most stores.

Bought a dozen of these for my wife and they look surprisingly good and filled out a Roses Only vase nicely. The bunch I bought in Geelong look good enough to be from a florist. You can remove half the tag too, which has Aldi on it. Also grabbed a 6 pack of Daniels Donuts. Am out of pocket $46 and wife is over the moon. Bonus, we all share the donuts after dinner. That's how you do business folks!

PS: It's a pass if you're long term married, but for a girlfriend it would be a fail. I know this, cause I asked my girlfriend. :p

  • got a dozen for my neighbor - roses look average - but amazing for $25

    • You are a nice neighbour

    • Not worth $25 imo

      • Depends if he gets any or not!

ALDI store on Magill Rd in Norwood, SA had 9 left an hour ago.

  • When I went in around 10am yesterday on Valentines Day, my local ALDI only had one bouquet left and it was already half dead/damaged (maybe that's why it was left). There were about a dozen or so single stemmed roses left which looked alright, but then I saw a lady in front of me buy 5 or 6 of them. There was also two pot plants left (I bought one of these and it bloomed today).

I'm not expecting many to be available for cheap given it looks like they wouldn't have surplus but YMMV.

    • all of the roses looked dead/damaged

  • These roses lasted only about a day before they died off
