Change from FTTN or FTTC to FTTP by Upgrading to a Faster Speed Plan (Select Locations) @ nbn Co via Participating ISPs

809

Previous long running post from 2022

A million more households and businesses will get the opportunity to choose faster and more reliable broadband as the rollout of full fibre to the premises continues across the country.1,2

nbn and the Australian Government have released the latest suburbs and towns where additional premises will become eligible to get fibre connected to their house or business by ordering an eligible wholesale speed tier1 - with up to 58 per cent located in regional areas and the rest in metro areas.

These upgrades are part of the nbn fibre upgrade program - which was boosted by the Australian Government’s recent announcement of an additional $2.4 billion investment.

Full fibre connection to the nbn® network offers customers access to the higher speed tiers, which delivers a better, more reliable internet experience for homes and businesses.

The enhancements to the nbn network to deliver faster speeds and more data reflect and support business and societal changes over the last two years.

According to Venture research commissioned by nbn, online health consultations have increased by 147 per cent, online secondary educational engagement has grown by 114 per cent and a third of people who can work from home now expect to continue working from home at least one day a week.

The company is also supporting growing demands from Australian businesses for faster speeds and more data. Research indicates that 40 per cent of businesses are using video conferencing, cloud storage or cloud-based software.

Other benefits of higher speeds include:

Faster uploads and downloads for homes and businesses;
Faster game upgrades;
Faster streaming – making it easier to work from home, and a more enjoyable movie experience.
The benefits are even greater for larger households with many high bandwidth devices being used at the same time. More speed is better for when the whole family is streaming online at the same time – working from home, gaming, and watching movies.

nbn is on track to enable up to 10 million premises, or up to 90 per cent of homes and businesses across Australia to access nbn Home Ultrafast, offering wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps, by the end of 2025.

To trigger an upgrade, customers at eligible premises2 need to place an order with a retailer which is based on one of nbn’s three highest residential wholesale speed tiers.

To find out if you’re eligible for an upgrade register at nbn.com.au/FTTPupgrade.

@markmono: The link to that document got taken down.

              • +3

@Twix: @markmono here's a link to the T&C on leaptel which highlights the key points in the original nbn one

      • Thats odd, I got both my home and my folks home upgraded to FTTP with Aussie broadband late last year and both times Aussie told me i cant change the speeds to 100Mbit or below or i have to pay fees.

        • +1

Yeah maybe the guy I got was clueless or just really nice, willing to waive the fees.
Idk, didn't sign up though. 100/40 is fine for me for now

        • +1

Aussie BB changed their policy. No fees now.

          • +1

            @Twix: Woo. Great news :)

    • No cost for me..all free. With Exetel. i only need to spend $10 more per month.. nothing about needing to pay anything extra for work done to get connected. My home is 8 meters from the curb.. no strange long driveway or issues like that. So i guess i'm either lucky or its the standard… also.. Laber was going to provide Fiber to the home for everyone for free at any speed level… Liberals are 100% to blame for all the NBN issues.

    • +1

NBN guys spent a whole day digging a small trench and laying cable from the pit to my house. No charge.
I did have to pay for a conduit inside though to get from the front of the house to my lounge room, which is in the middle. That was because they couldn't get the cable down the internal wall - if they could, this would have been free too.

  • -5

Sorry, I had to neg. I can't see the bargain here. You get access to faster speeds ( that's just info) but you have to pay for the upgrade. No deal here. This post should be moved to forum.

    • You can swap from FTTN or FTTC to FTTP by upgrading your plan for 1 month. The install is free.

      • So there isn't any additional cost of the speed upgrade, besides the 1 month upgrade charge? I am just trying to get my head around it.

        • +2

There is a $200 downgrade fee if you don't stay on the plan for at least 12 months. Not sure if it is enforced.

          • +3

@Carbon Door: Thanks for making clearer. I revoked my neg.

          • @Carbon Door: It is not! A friend of mine has upgraded for free, FTTC to FTTP. It required extensive work outside their home. They ported to another provider shortly after installation to a lower speed tier (250>100MBit). They were not charged the $200 fee.

    • +4

Upgrade is free. I did it by choosing a faster plan and then downgraded to a slower plan post installation. I.e. got fttp for the cost of the faster plan for a month.

      • Please, which provider are you with?

        • +1

Superloop. They confirmed in writing that there is no downgrade fee. And I have not been charged one as yet. I suggest confirming on chat and saving the conversation. Aussie broadband said the same via chat.

          • +1

@bargain_knight: I have had the same experience + got my neighbour to upgrade as well. No fee with Suoerloop. And my FTTP ping went down so much that even on 50/20 it's feels faster than 100/40 on FTTN.

          • @bargain_knight: Wow that's great, thanks! I just got connected with Exetel today. Need to give them 30 days notice before leaving for Superloop though…

            • @lily99: Exetel can order you FTTP. Superloop acquired Exetel and kept the brand around.

              • @Twix: But Exetel told me they charge the downgrade fee of $200.

I know that's strange, but I got two different results so didn't risk it with extel.

                • @bargain_knight: Exetel rep on here said they don't and it's not in the T&C's. Welcome to the FTTP club.

                • @bargain_knight: They told me to stay on the upgrade for 12 months.

    • +3

Try paying for an upgrade to Fibre and seeing how much that costs….. It's also Fibre…. of course it's better, regardless of speed.

      • +1

stole the words right out of my mouth. word for word lol.

  • -1

Any link to a checking page to see if it will work at my address?

    • +1

      nbn.com.au/FTTPupgrade

But it seems some addresses arent working yet… they might need to update their database

  • For people who got the FTTC to FTTP upgrade do they need to dig up a trench and run the fibre cable underground through your front yard or is it overhead?

    • +1

Cable is buried. If they can make use of the existing conduits that your current copper runs through then probably not. But if they can't or if you want your box to be installed some place difficult on the building, then probably yes.

      • +1

What @kangny said. I had that done a couple months back when the offer first became available.

Took them two visits but all in all a quick and painless process. Would upgrade again.

      • +2

New conduit for me for FTTC to FTTP upgrade. No cost . And my driveway is at least 25 metres.

    • +3

Most are underground. Overhead can be done too.

    • Mine is overhead as the pit is on the other side of the road.

      • they dug under the road installing mine

    • They probably wouldn't do it if they need to dig a trench; would be too expensive.

      • dig a trench; would be too expensive.

Not as much as you think. At least some of the NBN trenches are "dug" using a high-pressure water jet to "cut" through the ground, and a vacuum-excavation truck sucks up the water+soil slurry.

The big advantage is that the water jet won't harm any existing buried infrastructure they find, so safer and less training required. And much faster than ordinary trenching methods.

After the fibre is laid in the trench, they just fill the trench with the mud that collected in the vacuum excavation truck.

      • You'd think so but there were three NBN guys outside my house digging a trench for 8 hours. No charge.

        • there were three NBN guys

I thought NBN used local contractors for all earthworks. Did they look like NBN employees, or like contractors doing a job for NBN?

  • +8

How does that even work? My suburb is listed but when I put my address it comes back with the message saying it's not available right now…

    NBN is such a joke…

    • Agreed

    • just give them a buzz, mention that your suburb is listed. They'll either have more elaborate reasoning on their end, or will send someone out to have a geeze.

we got ours done to the premises and actually needed a bit of work to get done (pipe had lovely roots growing in them) which they were happy to do.

    • It means they've been through your suburb and completed pit inspections and run rope through the conduit on the streets in preparation for the fiber install team a few months ago. Engineering has then recently completed the design and green-lit the area for the upgrade. This is when the suburb is listed. This is where you're at now.

From there it will be weeks to months for the crews to come out and actually install the fiber between all of the pits. Following that they need to complete testing. When this is completed your address will show as available.

When that occurs you can then contact your ISP to arrange the upgrade. The crews could take weeks to months to come out and do the install. If the install is complicated it make take a couple of visits. When the install into your house is complete you'll finally be able to access fiber.

  • +1

TPG won't progress the change, even if you have had the email for the upgrade from NBN last year.
You just "sign up"and never hear back.
Sigh. I have changed from yes to maybe on the NBN checking site.

  • -4

It’s not really free when they are charging me any extra $15 a month but moved to 100/40 when there is nothing wrong with my 50/25

  • +2

My town was one of the ones listed to receive the NBN FTTP 13 years ago but sadly labor lost the election and the NBN was canceled for my town and it still isn't one of the locations listed for upgrade today :(

    • +8

well labor are in now. Call them up and complain.

      • +2

        we're in labor now?

        • feels like it

      • +1

        Better to complain via email.

      • +2

Too much damage done and money wasted with 6 years of Liberals in power controlling the NBN

  • +2

Well, after limping on ~7mbps 4G for the last 5 years, it's is lifechanging to now be on 1gbps ultrafast HFC; just saying.

    • But you don’t need more than 25Mbps! Tony said so! /s

      • I want every single one of those 775mbps on 5G WiFi , and 966mpbs on LAN…

  • +2

Depending on your circumstances, there may be significant hidden time and financial costs associated with this upgrade.
    My experience included:
    - about 2 months without internet
    - 3 different contractors attend for different tasks over about a month (inspecting, fibre installation, modem installation)
    - scheduling difficulties and no human to discuss it with
    - an end result of a modem installed in a basement and having to pay the cost of rewiring to bring the internet into the home.
    - erroneous disconnection of neighbours internet

    • Fttn or fttc?

      • FTTP 250/25

    • +2

      subcontracting keeps the cost low!
how else do the NBN corporate employees get paid so much bonuses

      I am super cynical.

my personal experience with FTTP upgrade went a lot smoother than yours. But the fact remains the installers was trying to minimize the work they have to do as much as possible and really lean towards pushing the homeowner to pay for all the internal wiring. understandably this is the behaviour that is incentivised by the fixed-price per visit pay structure from NBN so I don't blame them. anecdotally there are some rare contractors that are willing to do the the job right but don't count your luck on it.

the process is set up to give them all the power to minimize cost and they definitely don't want to let home owner have any say in this.

  • so does NBN offer that FTTP connection I currently have on opticomm infructure? with 250mbps downloads and 100mbps uploads? be interesting to see, he they actually offer anything above 100mbps lol.

    • You are stuck on OptiComm FTTP.

    • noob question, what's the difference between FTTP and Opticomm? I understand both are fibre and so shouldn't they be able to provide more than enough speed for most people?

      • opticomm isn't NBN, its privately own fiber to the home (FTTP) so it is not managed by NBN co its a different company altogether.

All of Opticomm though is all FTTP, there is nothing less like NBN has so you can actually get up to 1gb internet.

  • +1

My suburb is not listed but it already upgraded from fttn to fttp

  • +3

I wouldn't hold your in breath. My suburb was on the first announced list in May 2021.
Haven't heard a thing and no work started from what I've seen.

    • Which suburb

      • +1

        Cooee Tas

        • +1

          ..Cooee Tas

    • amazing paper launches

  • I got snail mail from NBN about this offer, I am on FTTC and the DPU is on the footpath at the front of my house. I am with TPG 100mbit plan and get virtually full speed. It is tempting to migrate to FTTP, but I don't need the 1000 speed and I'm not sure its worth the hassle of switching ISPs and migrating my home phone number than elderly overseas relatives still call.

  • +8

Should have been done in the first place 10 years ago

    • +1

Yep, the arguments over the original nbn plan were ridiculous.

  • My address is definitely able to upgrade to FTTP from FTTC, however, what is odd is that The big telcos such as Optus (Who I am with) cannot do the upgrade & yet companies like Aussie Broadband have stated they can. Its been months and Optus is still saying the same thing. I have a preference to stick with Optus as I have been able to negotiate a pretty good rate for 100/40mb plan which I've been on for 2 years approximately. its likely I can negotiate a good rate if I am able to upgrade to a better plan with Optus. Hopefully it will be available soon.

    • Optus can do the FTTP order. Call up again. How much for 100/40?

  • My parents in law live at Sussex Inlet. Not exactly the demographic chomping for super fast internet. How do they pick the suburbs?

  • -2

As many others mentioned, this is neither a bargain nor a deal. Just another catching up plan, sponsored by our incompetent politicians and administration. /sad

  • No dice. Neighbouring suburb listed so…… waiting, waiting
    .

    • Hey, my neighbouring suburb was also listed but I went ahead and checked eligibility just in case. I was told that my address is eligible, so I am talking to launtel right now as I type. I suggest you check your address and don't rely on the suburbs listed above.

  • +2

NBN is the most piece of sh@t company in Aus!

They refuse my upgrade simply because my block has the word “unit” in it, even though it has the exact setup as a normal house!

    • You would have thought they would be happy to do units as they can do a bunch of households at the same time…

  • My address has just become eligible by the end of Jan. Now I am contacting my ISP for the upgrade. Hooray!

  • -1

This is neat and all, but not a bargain.

  • People who have infact upgraded FTTC->FTTP
if i'm already on 100/40 plan, and getting close to full speed i.e. 105/36 on aussie broadband
besides being able to go higher in speed, will i notice any performance increase? or other benefits?

will they install a "battery" backup as default in case of power failure? or if not, can i just install a battery in to it

    • Lower ping and a more stable connection. Purchase your own UPS for battery backup.

  • For anyone wondering, if your address has the word “unit” in it then the f@ckers at NBN will leave you out of any upgrades!

  • -1

    No bargain here

  • +2

My suburb has been listed for this upgrade for 14 months or so. No NBN worker to be found anywhere here. I think they just throw together a big random list of suburb names without any real action plan.

    • Maybe they’re just pocketing the money to pay off debt. Wouldn’t put it pass the nbn board.

  • What about FTTB?

    • nbn FTTB is stuck on 100/40.

      • forever? I got stitched up my building was built 2013 but didn't go greenfields cause the developer didn't do the paperwork correctly. Any idea who from NBN was supposed to make sure new builds had fibre?

        • Nothing has been announced. It would be 2026 at the earliest.

        • My investment property is a new build completed last year built on a subdivision bought from the government. I had to pay a developer fee to get NBN to connect!

          • @Bdawg: What was the fee? Becuase i wasnt greenfields i had to pay like a $300 adsl2+ connection fee after using just my phone internet for about a year. Took about 3-4 years before i got FTTB which is still second-rate. Really annoyed about it

            • @Budju: I think it was $200. Government also shafted me by not supplying power to my residential block - power company wanted $11,000, so I wrote to the Director of Housing who sold me the block and they must have had a word because they did it for $5,500 (bargain!).

              • @Bdawg: hmm well that sounds like a stitch up. no power lol. The $200 bit was cheap though

  • If you're get your service through one of the participating isp's, hit them up about the offer. Don't worry about the eligibility checker.

  • I signed up for this.

I was on 50/25 ADSL plans, so ofcourse I wanted to jump up on the NBN highway.

Process was relatively simple, I signed up with AGL and waited for the tech to come and do the wiring.
The technician I got, was an experienced contractor who was very accommodating. It was from him, that I found out you could get the NBN box installed to ANY location within the house. Near the kitchen, near the hallway, near garage, all up to you. The more complex the location, the more work for them. All paid by NBN co.

The tech who came to my mother's house to install the NBN box, didn't give her that option. Plus, we didn't know to ask. They simply said they need to instal the NBN box as close to the meter box as they could ( which was to minimise their work load). This ended up being in some far corner of the front living room, instead of the old location, which was in the middle of the house in the hallway. This became a problem because the modem was then in one end of the house, and internet wifi was poor to the other end. Solved it using Wifi Mesh, but it would have been nice to keep the modem, telephone in the middle of the house.

    • yup, I had issues like that too and had to complain and fight. Both houses (mine and my folks) the techs were lazy and just wanted to install it in the Garage (closest room to the road ). Ridiculous, especially the garage at my folks place which leaks, has 1 power point far far away, and is so far away from most of the main areas of the house.
