Change from FTTN or FTTC to FTTP by Upgrading to a Faster Speed Plan (Select Locations) @ nbn Co via Participating ISPs

809

Previous long running post from 2022

A million more households and businesses will get the opportunity to choose faster and more reliable broadband as the rollout of full fibre to the premises continues across the country.1,2

nbn and the Australian Government have released the latest suburbs and towns where additional premises will become eligible to get fibre connected to their house or business by ordering an eligible wholesale speed tier1 - with up to 58 per cent located in regional areas and the rest in metro areas.

These upgrades are part of the nbn fibre upgrade program - which was boosted by the Australian Government’s recent announcement of an additional $2.4 billion investment.

Full fibre connection to the nbn® network offers customers access to the higher speed tiers, which delivers a better, more reliable internet experience for homes and businesses.

The enhancements to the nbn network to deliver faster speeds and more data reflect and support business and societal changes over the last two years.

According to Venture research commissioned by nbn, online health consultations have increased by 147 per cent, online secondary educational engagement has grown by 114 per cent and a third of people who can work from home now expect to continue working from home at least one day a week.

The company is also supporting growing demands from Australian businesses for faster speeds and more data. Research indicates that 40 per cent of businesses are using video conferencing, cloud storage or cloud-based software.

Other benefits of higher speeds include:

Faster uploads and downloads for homes and businesses;
Faster game upgrades;
Faster streaming – making it easier to work from home, and a more enjoyable movie experience.
The benefits are even greater for larger households with many high bandwidth devices being used at the same time. More speed is better for when the whole family is streaming online at the same time – working from home, gaming, and watching movies.

nbn is on track to enable up to 10 million premises, or up to 90 per cent of homes and businesses across Australia to access nbn Home Ultrafast, offering wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps, by the end of 2025.

To trigger an upgrade, customers at eligible premises2 need to place an order with a retailer which is based on one of nbn’s three highest residential wholesale speed tiers.

To find out if you’re eligible for an upgrade register at nbn.com.au/FTTPupgrade.

Wonder if they'll ever get around to fixing Fixed Wireless? 🤡

    • +8

They are currently upgrading it. Should be complete by Dec 2024.
      https://www.nbnco.com.au/utility/nbn-fixed-wireless-and-sate…

      • +3

        Cant come fast enough!!

      • +4

"Fixed Wireless network improvements are expected to allow the network to achieve ‘typical wholesale busy period speeds’ of at least 50Mbps (download)."

        It's hardly inspiring…

        • Wouldn't Starlink be faster?

          • +1

@BanannaMan: sometimes, Starlink is pretty variable in my experience. 100% more practical than skymuster, but not as good a a decent FTTN and nowhere near a FTTP.

I haven't had any experience or whispers of people who have had experience with it. But if it's worse than skymuster it must be trash

    • +3

I feel your pain!!!! I think ADSL2 was faster and more reliable.

I usually have to drive to the nearest mobile base station which is less than 1km from home in order to upload large files for work.

Whats your average speed if you dont mind me asking? Mine is 30/1. $95 per month via Telstra.

    • -3

      It's called starlink

      • +3

I know Starlink is an option BUT, i am not prepared to pay almost $1k to get the equipment, and extra $300 odd to get the receiver installed on my roof then pay $139 per month.

Thanks all the same, I would rather drive 1km down the road and leach of a mobile base station.

        • +7

          Outdated information

Now Equipment cost is $450 and you get two months free

If I could afford the equipment cost I would rather sell my iPhone fund he cost of equipment rather than living with such terrible speeds

          • +1

            @utsc: $450 for now. Normal price $924.

Starlink won't be fast forever either if they keep discounting the hardware. In fact they're currently only guaranteeing speeds of at least 50mbps.

            • @tp0: My friend has starlink.. he cant play league of legends with us without dropping out at least once in the 30 minute game and experiancing lagg.. :) he calls it starturd. My $65 NBN is rock solid with pings around 8 to 15ms..

Ive placed my order to upgrade to Fibre to the home. Its a 4 to 6 week wait.

              • @vid_ghost: How far in the sticks does your friend live not to get FTTx/HFC?

        • +2

I'll say this much about Starlink: I've had it for almost a year now, and it's been a consistently good experience for me. Speeds are reliably above 100Mbps, very few outages that weren't caused by severe storms. I don't do a ton of online gaming, but what little I did I had no problems playing. I work remotely and have several video calls a day, all without issues. I just have to deal with the high cost, since I literally have no alternatives (no, Skymuster is not an alternative).

Still, if I ever get an even half-decent alternative, that dish is coming off the roof the next day.

    • +2

I've got Starlink but recently cancelled and switched back to shitty 50 Mbps FTTN NBN. Starlink speed is great but I need lower ping for gaming, and opened ports for servers. Starlink is also pretty expensive monthly.

  • +17

    Why is this a bargain?

    • +22

What about us HFC folks

      • You can already order faster speed plans.

        • +6

HFC supports the maximum 1gbps plan currently, but I think that's the limit, and because of this multi-mode rollout we have super-low upload speeds.

When the time comes for >1gbps plans, then what? Taxpayer's money to fund HFC > FTTP upgrades, again? NBN is a joke. <rant off>

          • +3

@diaz: HFC has an upgrade path at least, DOCSIS 4.0 allows 10Gbps downstream speeds and 6Gbps upstream speeds. It's just a question of upgrading the HFC cabinets and hardware to enable support for the new DOCSIS standards, much like the NBN is currently deploying new XGSPON in place of standard PON, which will allow 10Gbps symmetric speeds on fibre in the future. The twisted copper in the ground is already so far degraded, there is no upgrade path for it.

            • @joshau: Funny hfc 1gbps struggles to even meet that in my hood.

            • +2

@joshau: hfc in my area gets drop outs after rain ….cable pits flood and the cable is part of the early foxtel roll out ….luckily router has 4g backup ….

          • +6

@diaz: That's ok, next time libnats get in they'll flog the whole thing off to some multinational, no doubt a Chinese company, who they'll let asset strip then when everyone whinges they'll demonise.

          • +2

@diaz: Seriously? There's people on fttn on 10 mbps or possibly worse, and you're complaining about 1 gbps speeds?

          • @diaz: ABB has been bombarding me: Sign up to a working NBN: Pay $799.00 per month PLUS GST instead the current $79 inc GST.
Thanks for the offer but is there anything reasonable for me?

          • +5

@diaz: NBN under laber was "everyone gets fiber to the home. NBN under liberal is this mixed technology inequality dumpster fire. Anyone who voted for the Liberals deserves what they got!!!! And should put up with it because its their fault. No one else to blame but their vote for idiots who knew nothing about technology or future proofing the country

        • +3

In my experience of HFC you can ask to order high speed plans and then get told the line cannot handle it so here’s 100mbps download (but you won’t achieve it)

Screw the liberal party and Rupert Murdoch.

          • +6

@mooney: Meh I get 850Mbps all day every day on HFC. It's awesome. Well it can sometimes dip to 680Mbps during peak but still great.

          • -1

@mooney: Singtel pulled the best scam. Got paid $800m for their HFC, then discovered it was useless & decommissioned. That was Labor.

            • +7

@M00Cow: Labor paid 800m to decommission it as part of the full FTTP rollout. it was the coalition that then tried and failed to use it in the multi mode delivery. So not exactly true..

            • +1

@M00Cow: From the AFR, hardly an unbiased source, so even the LNP mouthpiece dissagrees with you "NBN – the company formerly known as NBN Co – originally got ACCC approval to pay Optus $800 million to shut down its cable network so it couldn't compete against the government-owned monopoly.

But Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull railed against the move in opposition and in February the deal was changed to one where NBN will buy, upgrade and use the network, which Optus has previously said passes by 2.4 million premises."

We're in this shitshow of a mess because the LNP wanted to keep paying their buddies.

          • @mooney: I am on 250/25 on HFC and it's been nothing but stable. When I applied for 1000/50 I was denied but that was because it was a trial, I believe it is supported now but it's not worth paying 60 dollars extra for that speed. 250 is good for me right now.

            • @akl977ad: Am jealous. I’d pay $60 more but for the extra upload speed. My wife makes YouTube content in 4K and our upload speed is absolutely pathetic.

    • +8

Some people can upgrade for free instead of paying for a fibre upgrade

      • -8

It's not free. You need to pay for access.

        • +11

          I love the bold text

        • +10

But you are already paying for the service.

          • -2

@Carbon Door: Have to pay more for the higher speed.

        • are only free things bargains?

          • -2

@[Deactivated]: Many free things are not bargains.

            eg. Syphilis

            • @jv: Ahh thanks for the laugh (and the STD). Much appreciated.

Piss poor form mate. 2 innocent cops and a neighbour got killed by a "dedicated" former school principal

      • +2

Anti vaxer loses his work and later on his life when he kills two cops first. One less waste of space on earth

        • -4

I agree, the world is overpopulated. We all need a Jacinta that puts a flyer in every new mothers hand: Free offer from the best country. You can now hug your new baby for 24h and then return it to heaven. All free paid by the state. Enjoy life, go dancing again, get free booze to get drunk and do it all over again. Germany has Frau Baerbock: She claims to be a super greenie, drives a 6 ton fortified Mercedes, and now she has single handed declared war on Russia in the name of her country. The weapon's lobby will eventually provide her a safe heaven.
          Interesting times ahead!

          • @payless69: Ok boomer. Now crawl back in your hole

            • @mandelbrot: Back to Gerry for a exclusive carrier deal that you know has money to pay for affiliates here.

FTTN 23Mbps/6.2 Mbps 1000M to node FMLLLLLLLLL

    • +4

Doubly insulting as they're increasing the prices of the lower speed tiers, and keeping the higher ones static.

    • -5

      Bro, buy a better house.

      • +4

If you own your home, it is almost certainly cheaper to pay for technology change than pay stamp duty on moving house.

        • -4

Mate, we all under 30 professionals earning $250k+ a year. Cheaper to buy another rental as investment property. Get on board, bro.

        • +1

yep, nbn still says $12,000 to uplift from hfc to fibre in my house ….

          • @garage sale: I had a 14k quote prior to the free upgrade "announcement". The fibre runs on the opposite side of my street :( so close yet so far.

    • I'm 1500m from the node.. MAX limit for fiber to the node.. i get 36/6 in 4 to 6 weeks my fiber to the home upgrade will be complete. My area has newish copper.. only 35 years old

paper launch with added paper since https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/690035 ?

        • Yup paper launch.

My suburb is listed but my address doesn't work. I called up NBNco just to confirm if the checker just hasn't been updated and they just said it isn't ready there yet. So why list the suburb!

The person from NBNco said to register to get updates, and that when you are ready for the upgrade they should put something in your letter box.

    • Same here

    • I'm in the same houseboat. Typical NBN, they are so incompetent it hurts.

  • +7

my suburb is finally listed, although my address doesnt show as eligable in the checker. anyone know what kind of timing we are dealing with here?

    • -2

      my suburb is finally listed

Mine wasn't listed, but I still got it for free late last year.

      • -1

Likewise, my suburb was never listed, I saw them roping over a year ago, have had Fibre for a good 6 months or so.

    • +2

you get sent a letter from your provider about it, or from competitors after a period when you havent upgraded.

  • +2

Nbn is a disaster i got fttp 100 mbps finally after having 25 mbps but thats the max they can give on the goldcoast metro area most countries 10 times our speeds min its the joke of the world.

    • +3

You sure it's not the provider at fault?

Never heard of a FTTP address being limited to 100 only across the board.

    • +7

Every nbn FTTP connection is capable of 1000/400 and there is room to go faster in the future. Either your ISP only offers 100Mbps or you need a new router and ethernet cabling.

    • +4

I got on this last year as soon as it hit my area. I am consistently getting 1Gbps.

Prior to this, I consistently got 100 Mbps. However, to get that, I needed to spend 250 of my own money for a guy to come out and identify that some of the connections in the pits needed to be replaced and I needed a more direct connection within my house instead of the nest of cables from 40 years of extra connections. Before that I was getting around 35 Mbps and it dropped out when it rained. The pit connections got it to 73 and then the full 100 with a new run inside the house.

NBN is going well for me now.

    • I can get 500mbps in Campbelltown NSW
      But happy with 100

  • +1

Upgrading to FTTP faster speed plan + more cost ? 🤔

    • +5

      + more cost

If you are eligible for More Telecom, you can get 30% off for 12 months, which might make the faster speed cheaper than people's current plans.

      • +4

        FTTP is more stable.

My suburb got "announced" in May 2021 but has disappeared from this updated list. Annoying

    • +3

My suburb is on the updated list but when I put in my address it's not available for upgrade. I also put in the main rd of the town that runs next to the exchange and that says unavailable. Guess it's not an accurate list by any means.

    :sad HFC noises:

    Thanks LNP!

Yep my suburb is listed but my address showing as ineligible. Hopefully just the system yet to be updated.

Is there any intention to offer FTTP for HFC customers?

    • +2

Not for free. If you want to pay for HFC to FTTP nbn will take your hard earned cash.

Just enquired, Brisbane South near Westfield Garden City next to M3, HFC, townhouse complex, 18K, thanks NBN!

I enquired. They’re happy to help for the low low price of $16k

      • Ouch

      • $12k for me to uplift from flakey hfc ….

      • I just checked. Same for me. Ridiculous cost.

      • Post an ozbargain thread, that's a winner baby!

Im currently going through this process and just to clarify, it is only "free" assuming no additional works (like trenching or installing new conduits) are required to connect your home to the nearest curb or node.

You will need to sign up to one of their higher tier plans for min. 12 months. If you're fttn -> fttp, you'll need to join at least a 100 down plan and if you're fttc -> fttp then you'll need to join at least 250 down. Depending on which provider you go with, you may have to place a $200 "fee", which you get back at the end of 12 months assuming you don't downgrade (from memory I think most providers do this except Aussie BB, who absorb the cost?) Happy to be corrected if I've missed or forgotten anything

apparently aussie broadband doesn't require you to sign up for 12 months.
I enquired about this late last year and the support person said there is no contract minimum.

      • +3

If you lower speed back down below 100mbit before 12 months, NBN Co will charge you $400 fee

        • +6

It's not $400. There is a $200 nbn downgrade fee if you change to a slower speed plan before 12 months ends. It is up to the ISP if they pass the $200 nbn downgrade fee onto you or not. If you change to a slower speed after 12 months there are no nbn downgrade fees.

          • @Twix: You may be correct, I can't seem to find the same document again to confirm this price since it's not easily found on the nbnco website.
