    cannot recommend enough

Great device. Great value at this price.

  • can this cast 4k content from your computer?

    • No. Screencasting is limited to 720p, and is pretty shite quality most of the time unless you have pretty grunty hardware.

  • +2

Great deal. Very tempted. Might hold off and wait for an upgraded model which hopefully is released sometime this year.

    • +2

      Yeah, agree.

While this is a great price, I feel like the newer model will make me regret the purchase.

I already own a couple of them, so I know the upgrade I'm hoping for…

      • What r u waiting for?

        • +2

          More storage

          • +2

@Flyufools: Yeah, have this device and the storage is fked with not that many apps lol

            • +1

@Duplicity: Oh wow, didn't realise that was an issue!

What are you installing on it? Apps or movies lol

        • +1

As others have said, more space and probably at least 4gb ram.

It seems to struggle nowadays when I go to my library in PLEX. I'll scroll down and constantly hit the blank covers as the system is trying to catchup and populate them with the cover artwork. Happens on all units I own. My Sammy in the lounge room uses the built in PLEX app and I do not see blank covers in my library there.

I've also tried the Amazon Firestick 4K. It kept crashing the app I was using (Netflix, Utube, Amazon Prime, whatever) and would send me back to the homescreen. No explanation why it was dumping me to the start and it would just keep happening. Couldn't link volume to the remote either, where as CCWGTV did it fine. Ultimately got rid of it.

          • @Arcticfox: Oh man, I an now starting to realise I am not using this anywhere near its potential.

Any good youtube videos to check out?

            Cheers

            • +1

              @adb1984: Hey bud,

Setting up the remote to link to your TV volume is bulit into the unit instructions when you plug it into TV for initial setup. If you mean PLEX, that's a much bigger conversation!

              • @Arcticfox: Oh yeah, im good with the volume. Interested in looking into the Plex set up.

  • How's this with Plex? My Xbox One X has been stuttering like mad with high bitrate content and getting so sick of it.

Was thinking of a nvidia shield but this is far cheaper.

    • IMO worth stepping up to a shield pro for plex. Smooth as playback and handles most formats and quick to decode (if your transcoding hardwares up to it)

      • Do you think the Chromecast will improve from the One X anyway? Thinking of just pulling the pin on this since it's so cheap and upgrading to a Shield Pro later when it's on sale or something. I'm sure this'll come in handy regardless.

    • +2

Been using Plex with these for over a year now.No issues.

      • Excellent to hear! Do you run high bitrate content? That's mainly where my issue is lying with the Xbox

        • Not sure what the bitrate is but have been playing playing 10gb files without problem.

        • Handles 4K HDR HEVC files without any issues for me on WiFi 6. Ironically my older model Nvidia Shield ~2017 which is also 4K rated was struggling.

        • Can you share an example of your high bite rate content? I seem to be running them fine.
          4k 10bit

    • I got this for running plex over my local network and it has been perfect for 10GB/hour 4k content

      • What's your plex server specs? Seems like my i3 server with integrated graphics seems to struggle with 4k h265 content lately. Have 24gb ram and no issues with local network. Also have plex pass, but struggles with transcoding.

        • I'm running it from my gaming PC, so a Ryzen 5600 with 16GB ram (I'm not using hardware transcoding), and transmitting using maximum quality settings over WIFI to the network through a mid to high-end router.

At this price it's a insta buy!

  • +3

Good buy mate, at this price would take it over a fire stick max 4k

    • my old trusty chromecast shit itself yesterday so had to toss up between the fire stick and chromecast, ended up going with firestick for $59 - came in today and its pretty smooth!

      • +6

        Nice username brah

And yeah imo the amazon ui is a bit too busy for me other than that the experience is still very on par

  • Cheers OP great find! 🍻

  • +2

this is strupidy good value for kayo, main streaming services and most of all.. Plex..

it bloody plays everything for me without transcoding.

  • +1

    this or Amazon firestick 4K.
    which one is better guyz

    • -3

      4k stick

    • +6

      This quite comfortably.

    • +1

yes firestick faster but this is much much better experience for me.

    • -1

Got Firestick 4K on special at JB and gave to a mate - he only wants it for Kayo, which apparently he has to sideload and he's not technical. Very frustrating as to why Amazon would cripple the store like that. I just assumed they reskinned Android TV and it would be widely compatible. Think I paid less than $50 for Firestick, so when Google TV around $60, I'd go for Google to avoid any hassle.

  • +1

What's the UI like on this? Better than the fire stick?

  • Was contemplating today buying my lost GTV remote. Bought :)

  • Awesome, sold!
    Thanks!

  • Do you still need this if you already have smart TV?

    • +3

If the TV has all the apps you need and snappy and responsive interface, then you don't need it.

    • Yes. Stove away the TV remote - and enjoy the simplicity of the UI, remote and zippy performance.
If you have an AV, plug it into AV - which you cant do with Smart TV apps.

      • If you have an AV, plug it into AV - which you cant do with Smart TV apps.

What does that whole line mean? Can't plug Smart TV apps? To an AV port? The one with yellow, white and black plugs? Plug apps?

        • Basically, you can put AV Receiver between Google TV puck and TV in one of AV receiver's HDMI input.

          GTV <==hdmi in====> AVR <==tv out hdmi====> TV

Whilst using Smart TV apps on TV - you are required to do ARC/eARC to AV receiver.

Smart TV (With Apps) <==== eARC / tv out hdmi ====> AVR

Option 1 is the simplest integration with AV if you have multiple sources to switch (XBox / PS5 etc) (Switch sources in AVR)
Option 2 works but with multiple sources to switch becomes little inconvenient. (Switch sources in AVR & TV)

          I hope I makes sense.

          • @r0nmac: It does, I wouldn't think of a receiver being called an AV. Ta

    • +1

we use it as we have a couple of basic smart 4k tvs. One LG and the other samsung its given these tvs a second life as the apps and menus were painfully slow but the screen was still pretty good. If you have a tv bought in the last 2-3 years or one that has a google play store on it then the benefit will be minimal anything older than that will be a big upgrade

      • yes very true. I have a 2020 Sony tv and the smart interface is easy to navigate and more than quick enough. I dont foresee needing this until perhaps 5 years later.

    • Yes I am using one with my new LG C2 because I hate WebOS

  • Thanks, been waiting for this. GoogleTV built in to our TV is sooooo slow.

  • Hmm… why did I just buy this, I have an Apple TV 4K.

  • +2

Devastated. Just bought one a week ago at full price because I'd already waited over a month and it hadn't gone down in price in that time.

    • +2

If you still have the receipt and can return it, buy this and use it for the return :)

  • Thanks bought

  • Great find OP, bought one thanks

  • Ah you legend! My $4000 stupid smart tv is getting slow and I've been wanting one of these to replace its "brain" for a while but 1080p just wasn't going to cut it.

  • That was a snappy special!

  • Missed out by the looks, fails to add to cart.

  • Missed it!

  • +1

Any recommendations for a cheap hub to connect to USB-A flash drives?

    • I use a generic 5 in 1 type with USB C power passthrough without problems. Works with USB storage. OzB won't let me post a link.

  • That was quick. Missed out.

  • Boy it sold out quick.

  • +1

Have been using it since it was first released for $90 ish or something like that. Its very good.

  • Missed it

  • darn that was a good price. we got the HD one for about the same.

  • In stock but it is $79 now

  • +1

Over 100 upvotes, should be an automatic purchase, even if means taking out a loan.

  • +3

Was this a price match or Amazon AU selling it cheap? Unfortunately I missed out, but if anyone can find it at the same price, please let us all know ASAP. TIA

  • -5

What a deal! Grabbed 5. One for me and a couple for cheap presents for family friends. Thanks OP!

    • Salty boys….. don’t be salty. Again…

  • Other than the 4k is the HD version the same?

  • Dammit i missed it x(

  • Damn I just bought one for 79 this morning from amazon!

    • You could have chatted with the CS while the deal was active to get a refund or credit. Or just buy this and return the $79 one.

  • I got JB Hifi to price match it, and used my Birthday $10 Coupon, $44.98 and click and collected tonight.

  • -5

Ok device, nothing to write home about.
Remote control is garbage at best.
I also dislike the device hanging off your TV.
Would rather get the Fire TV Stick 4K Max for $59.

    • I wrote a comment above about needing to sideload Kayo. Any idea why Firestick 4K doesn't support this app, and possibly others? Might not be difficult to just use DOwnloader, but for non-techies, its a nuisance factor.

  • Can you use these things with stored media…like on a usb hdd? Ive already got one in one of the kids bedrooms and everything played is wireless but never thought about playing from a plugged in external disk for those once in a blue moon pesky files that refuse to play correctly via wifi.

    • +2

Yep, USB-C Hub with Power Delivery.
Eg. This. Apparently works with GTV according to one of the reviews.

      • +2

Oh no way! I have a cheap unbranded version one of these. Will test it later!

Edit: I've tested and can comfirm it works. I had to use my samsung usbc phone charger though as the factory google chromecast said there wasn't enough power.

        • I'm so confused. Obviously the Chromecast pugs in to the HDMI port and the external HD plugs in to the USB A port. The USB C inp[ut is the power… where does the USB C go to? In terms of connecting to a TV?

          • +2

@Fatboy74: Usb charger > Amazon Adaptor (usbc female) > Amazon usbc male > chromecast usbc female > chromecast HDMI into TV

            • @cheapass88: Thank you. I should have Googled first. I appreciate the simple explaination.

  • Right my new sharp tv from the other deal recently has the worst OS/wifi/processor ever seen and I need another deal on one of these bad boys :(

  • Is this better than the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick 4K?
