  • Showing $59 for me, still good!

  • +1

A fantastic product for converting old, dumb TVs into smart ones.

Got one from a recent OzBargain deal and enjoying it immensely….

  • +3

Is it worth upgrading from a Chromecast to this?

    • +1

I want to know this too. Previous one working well for last 7-8 years.

      • +1

nice remote and will work with voice …i have the HD version and really like it as a package

        • +3

must faster to respond than the original Gen 1 chromecast - definitely worth the upgrade

    • +3

If you have a dumb tv and need a new or replacement set top box, these are great. Runs all the streaming apps.

If you already have a smart tv with google tv in it, then don’t get it.

If all you want is to chromecast (and not the apps) then don’t get it, your older one is sufficient.

Haha oh I dunno..I bought one of those sharp 70" TVs from a recent deal and the built in OS/android is so slow and unstable I bought a firestick anyway!

        • Yeah I meant if they have google tv already, like some recent Sony Bravia models. I don’t know about smart TVs. My dumb plasma is fine for now and I hope it lasts another ten years.

          • @soan papdi: Mine does have google tv and Chromecast. It's just rubbish so they can still suck :)

        • +3

Agreed. I have cheap chiq tv and the in built android tv was soooo slow.

I replaced it with a google tv 4k and it is way faster and feels snappy.

Previously I had to wait minutes for the Plex app to load. Now I only need to wait a few seconds.

The google tv remote being able to control tv power and sound is just the cherry on top, too!

smart TVs with android can quickly get out of the update cycle , these google TV and fire stick devices get regular updates as TV models update, unlike a phone , people don’t upgrade TVs every 2-3 years

@garage sale: Android TV software doesn't really get out of date. If you have at least Android 7, you're good to go. Besides, Sony TVs have received patches when 5 years old.

            • +1

@Techie4066: They won't be supported forever. Google will support this longer.

            • +1

@Techie4066: Otoh, my Sony TVs Android TV update broke its arc3 connection to my Sony Bluray system.

              • +1

@furyou: My 6 year old sony tv just got stuck in a bootloop out of nowhere.

    • +1

Yes. Quicker, better menu, has apps and remote is Useful

    • Yes, just the remote is worth the upgrade.

    • +2

      totally worth it
it's like a set top box and it works much faster than some recent "smart tv".

its remote turn on and off your tv too - so if you don't watch normal tv, you don't even need your big old remote.

  • Missed out. No longer available…..

  • +1

Too few stocks which it can not survive even 30 votes

    • It was up for a little while.

    • It wasn’t the issue with stock level as Amazon has reverted the price back to $79 and showing in stock

  • Have an LG C1 or C2 and find Chromecast has a lot better picture quality if you want to cast something to your TV. As I do it a lot a Chromecast is worth it.

  • Good

I have chromecast gen1, gen 3, this google tv (4k), and Amazon fire tv max.
Amongst them amazon one is my favourite. It has wifi6 and more storage.
Although to be fair, google's remote control is nicer in hand.
Edit: amazon fire tv does not have "chromecast built-in" (it has some sort of screen mirroring though), i.e. you cannot cast to fire tv and it automatically turns your tv on to show the video - but obviously chromecast does.

Been looking at ozbargain all day, have dinner and miss this :(

  • +1

damn missed it, bought one about 6 months ago on a deal and its fantastic for our needs. I my tvs software is no longer updated and this allows them to stream all our services and also connect to my NAS via KODI and play my local movies also. Tempted to by the regular HD, as the tv I want to put it on is only 1080P anyway

  • +1

Anyone know how long it takes google to ship the ethernet adapter? It's been 2 weeks and I don't even know if it's shipped.

  • +1

    missed again :(

  • +1

Kinda disappointed at how it couldn’t play Plex from the app without distorting colours.

    • Colours are showing up like purple or greenish? Could be the videos on your server are HDR.

  • My chrome cast is laggy at times especially with YouTube. E.g when scrolling through videos there would be a delay sometimes up to 10 seconds or it would skip a few videos. What could be the problem?

  • Can Chromecast be used without a phone?

    • +1

      Yes with the new update

      • Confirming this as I have cast things from my desktop's browser to this with no issues.

  • +1

For those who bought this, check the box when you receive it. I got the HD version rather than 4K. I went onto online chat, and they said it was a listing error, but will send the correct version out as a replacement (we will see…).

    • HA, they probably got confused because of the stupid name (I admit it's a great device though).

    • Same here, my replacement item was also HD, I requested a call and purchased 4k at full price and a refund of the difference $36.80 will return both HD tomorrow

  • Anyone used the Ethernet Adapter (or more importantly a non-google one)?

Would like to purchase one but ideally not full priced google one.
