$250 cheaper than it was yesterday, so "only" 602 more than the M1 Pro version with 16 core GPU and 16GB RAM.

Cue comments about how $4k for a laptop is not a bargain ;)

        • Thanks, will keep that in mind for the future :)

        • Yeh AOC store as well, with Apple gift cards that were discounted and included a cash back deal at the time.

Have to go hunting but a good deal is always available.

Not sure what the issue is, my Dell laptop for work cost $3600. I have no doubt the Mac in the OP is better.

    • +4

The issue is people are used to cheap (price- and quality-wise) Windows laptops or game-oriented laptops at a similar price (but allowing them to do gaming) and with Apple they get none of these. Build quality is not a priority for them, limited configurations of MBPs seem scary to commit at this price, I guess. People who actually use them for work seem not to participate in these inflammatory discussions.

      • Fair enough. I guess some don't like that things can be expensive and a bargain.

        • +2

Yeah, it's a bit like ridiculing a tradie for getting a set of tools at 10x the price of what you can get from Supercheap Auto's lower shelf.

Yeah, you can get by with that cheaper set, but the chances are it's going to wear down sooner.

        • +2

Well, some people are just sheer dumb or frustrated and malicious, like this comment right below.

Looks like the deal's over folks. Marked as expired.

Bloody apple fanboys! Mmmmm apple tax

Dang, wonder how long it took you to compose that and how much money you could've make at the lemonade stand in front of your parents' house instead.

      • -2

Not long actually. And i'm an Aussie…. never seen a lemonade stand in this country. Have you? Lol. Seriously though…. this is a 2021 laptop charging premium price for pretty basic specs. I truly don't see the value in it. $4k for sub-par parts.

        • This should be easy then - find a comparable windows system with similar specs and build quality.

          • @ihfree:

            similar specs and build quality.

Just not possible - ive never had a power cable come perished "new" from the box until i bought an M1. That's unparalleled levels of quality, although my old $600 hp pavilion from 2011 came pretty close.

            • @ssfps: Always nice hearing from a bitter confused someone with buyer's remorse.

Every product has a failure rate. You could have very easily got the issue with the cable sorted. Also, being USB-C rather than a barrel connector as featured on many alternative models, there's a strong chance you would have had an alternative cable.

              • @ihfree: Of course I got it sorted, but it's still amusing watching fanboys fawn over something with the same failure rates as the rest of the industry.

                • @ssfps: Yeahhh… they're one of the more reliable brands.

still amusing watching fanboys fawn over something with the same failure rates

Yeah, your basically doing the same thing but having a whinge.

                  • @ihfree: did you even read your own link?

As for the brands, the study finally indicates that Asus computers are the most reliable on the market , with a breakdown rate of less than 10% in the first two years, and 15.6% after the third year . The figures are about the same for Toshiba models, second in the ranking. Apple (17.4%), Dell (18.3%), Lenovo (21.5%), Acer (23.3%) and Gateway (23 , 5%). Hewlett-Packard, the world's largest computer vendor, has a default rate of about 16% within two years and 25.6% within three years.

thanks for the reference showing my point that they're all about as reliable as each other. so apple computers on average failed within 3 years 17.4% of the time, what immense quality.

Toshiba make some cheap garbage tier laptops yet they were second in reliability, with apple fourth. Wow.

BTW, that page you linked is crap and doesn't even reference the study, which seems to be https://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_laptop_relia… . It's from 2009, so may not even be current.

Go on mate, you have got a captive market!

it's totally fine to not like apple. I think the company ethos is pretty average as well.

But to say a laptop with probably the best screen, battery, speakers, and extremely high cpu/gpu performance for a laptop is sub par is just being negative for the sake of it.

          • @gavincato: For $4k i'd want the lastest, fastest and largest drives. I realise a gaming laptop is different but you can have a look around and see better specs for the same price and it's not 2years old already. The specs simply don't add up to what you're paying for. It's apple tax. Buying a brand name….

            • @teddiebear: you aren't getting better specs overall.

The whole point is with the mac it's excellent in near every area. A gaming laptop, yeah it might have a faster gpu/cpu but very marginally so and it comes with weight/noise/battery life differences etc - I hope you get what I mean.

btw the mac ssd's are pretty damn fast, my mbp does near 7000mb/s and I seriously doubt you are getting faster in a 4k pc laptop.

              • @gavincato: I get what you're saying. Only thing imho that apple has over microsoft, apple does have a far superior software suite. All i'm saying is if you pulled the laptop apart and compared it to another laptop, the parts are very similar but different brand, or same brand in some cases yet totally different price tags.

      • We could probably have ChatGPT generate the same tired drivel… oh wait, we never asked for it anyway

    • That's a very emotional response what should suggest some sort of imbalance.

Do luxury cars also upset you?

      • Nah. People with money don't make me jealous as i'm not that way. They probably earned it and worked hard for it… good on them.

        • Why do you love hearing mac users cry? who hurt you?

Perfect for all the law students at my university!
