Waiting for don't get UK based router comments…

Don’t get UK based routers. You’re welcome.

Uk based routers. You don't get. Welcome. You are.

        - network engineer yoda

      • Serious question. How come?

        • People think it negatively impacts their wifi experience.

          • +4

@scottb721: they dont think, its a fact, lower power output, lower signal , no brainer

            • +4

@botchie: There are also missing Wi-Fi channels and Asus AU don't cover the warranty so you have to ship it back to Amazon UK.

    • depends on use cases but with people asking about mesh some times and coverage , power and coverage seem important features compared to just configuration features ….loving my rtax56 from last deal more features than i need and the ones i do want aren’t on any other their other models anyway e.g something like pi hole or other add blocker.

If using asus-merlin it is possible to apply a blocklist directly against dnsmasq within your router. Eg oisd list with ~300k entries. Dnsmasq runs super fast and uses minimal memory also. I run an auto script to download the latest oisd each day

It's so often new ozbargainers posting UK Routers

    Don't get them.

  • Just curious Whts the advantage of using these expensive Routers over default routers provided by ISP. I don’t play games online.

    • +3

The expensive routers are often more reliable and you can control a host of things within your network.

      • +1

The one Optus supplied me didn't allow use of other than DNS ….

        • It's bs how they do that, lock down DNS provider to themselves.

    • +1

I had an ISP provided router for years and I had frequent drop outs which wasn’t much of an issue until I started to work from home. Every now and then when I was in conference calls someone would say that my audio/ video was cutting out. I had to restart my router every few days to not have such issues.

They I decided to invest in this expensive’ router and I have never had to restart my router in the last year as I don’t have the dropouts any more.

      • Thank you

    • I got the non pro version of this router for 360 ish via computer alliance ebay 3 years ago and legit has not skipped a beat once. I definitely do not use any of the advanced features though lol.

    • +2

Generally speaking, vastly improved coverage, reliability, newer features (e.g. wifi 6), better security.
      ASUS make great consumer routers!

These are also great for power users.
      E.g.
*You can run multiple VPNs on multiple specific devices (from the router itself, ASUS VPN fusion). E.g. put your TV only on a US VPN to watch US Netflix without any other device being stuck on that VPN.
*You can VPN into your router, so when you are out and about you can access your local home network. (ASUS instant guard).
      *Security features included.
      *Home network tools and diagnostics.
*You can flash merlin software onto most ASUS routers making it even more customisable with even more features, Although the stock software is way more customisable than all other big brand routers I've tried.

These are just some of the features I use ans value.

As a power user, I use too many of these features and benefits every day, i could never go back to an inferior ISP suplied router.

      • thank you for the information, I never knew it. I thought it’s used for online gaming only

    • +1

imo just buy an older model of an expensive router and it will be much better than ISP.
I have a ASUS DSL-AC68U which is like $100 gumtree.

      • I recently sold two TM-AC1900s (T-Mobile branded AC68U with a lower spec processor) for about $30 recently. They're worth watching out for if you're on a budget.

I had about 5 years of a rock-solid network with that router.

    • There are also some security implications using an ISP-Provided router as they often give the ISP access.

An ISP-provided router also isn't great if you move ISP. A TPG-provided router, for example, had a separate configuration page with no password provided for SIP settings.

  • if you really need to buy a cheap UK-version ASUS router, try to modify the CFE, you can get a router with max TX power.

    • do you have a guide for it?

      • yes, I do have, but it is very complicated and hard to guide via internet.

        • :-(

    • Can't do that now. CFE is encrypted.

      • Nah, just hacked my RT-AX89X and successfully changed it to the CN version yesterday. Now all settings are open for modification.

  • One of this or mesh router(orbi, google wifi, etc) ?

    • Asus mesh, but not UK one.

    • +1

Completely different use case. You either need mesh or you don't.

  • What's the difference between the ASUS RT-AX86U Pro and ASUS RT-AX86U?

  • +1

Can someone reiterate why UK routers are not recommended here on Ozbargain?

Are the available channels different or something else?

    • +1

Lower power due to their regulations seems to be the talk

    • +1

      Power, warranty, potentially less channels.

  • Déjà vu

  • +4

If you are truely a long term lurker and interested in a modem, you should have seen previous posts and comments about modems imported from the uk.

    Don’t buy it!

  • +2

Stop with the UK import router deals when we know they cause issues….

  • +2

To counter all the "don't buy it from UK", here's my experience:

I have two of the UK import modems, AX82 and TUF-AX5400, in an Asus mesh, ethernet backbone, working great, no issues at all.

Large house, 2 levels, many different laptops, desktops, NAS, TVs, XBOX, iPhones/iPads, other devices, etc, using it constantly, as working from home and no dramas.
Setup is dead simple and mesh works really well.

I bought them as they were literally half the price of the local (almost) exact the same products.

    • Exactly, the people who go with the "Missing Wifi channels" "Lower Power Output not as strong wifi" if you have a Mesh Network then it doesnt matter at all.

      • Any real-world impact for AiMesh if you're using wireless backhaul?

        • Yes, you can read about it online.
My experience is that wireless backhaul is not worth it.
Ie, my wifi transfer speeds go from 50-60MB/s on ethernet to 5-15MB/s (even less) when using wifi backhaul.

          • @ehsad: Specifically for the UK vs Australian models?

Ethernet backhaul is great but not always practical.

            • @ihfree: More general. Previously had ASUS AC68U (Aus stock) with similar experiences.
I would not do it without ethernet backhaul.

    • From my experience dwelling construction as a much greater influence on wifi performance. I've seen many 'aussie' routers struggle to get through even the one wall.

  • fyi - UK removes all the restrictions for their indoor wifi, so you shouldn't have any issues with the router from UK. For half the price, why not?!

    https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0036/198927/…

    • Simple fact is, Asus routers output at half the max tx power. I know because I've done recent testing on the latest firmwares. So even if restrictions have been lifted it will take a while to come into effect.
